I've generally had good experiences with this veterinary office, and the staff has always taken…read moregreat care of my dog. However, a recent experience left me frustrated and is the reason for my 2 star review. The office recently implemented a policy requiring deposits for appointments, which is perfectly understandable. My issue isn't with the policy itself, but it's with how this situation was handled. At a recent vaccine appointment, my dog needed a required follow-up visit for a booster to his vaccine. That appointment was scheduled before I left the office, but no one mentioned that a deposit was needed or asked me to pay one at that time. A few days later, I received a voicemail from Carolina saying my appointment would be canceled if I didn't pay the deposit. It felt like I was being threatened with cancellation over something that was ultimately the office's oversight. A simple "We forgot to collect your deposit when you were here" or even an apology would have gone a long way. To make matters more frustrating, it's nearly impossible to reach anyone by phone. Calls always go to voicemail, and you have to wait for a callback. Unfortunately, our schedules never seemed to line up, so we ended up playing phone tag. In the end, I had to drive to the office just to pay a $20 deposit for an appointment that they scheduled while I was already there...(DUH!) If deposits are going to be a requirement, there should be easier ways to collect them. Sending an invoice by email or allowing online payment would save everyone time and frustration. I still think this is a good veterinary practice and will likely continue bringing my dog here because I've been happy with the care he receives. However, the communication surrounding this new policy needs improvement. This situation could have been handled much more professionally, and staff could be a lot friendlier. I'd like to add that when I came in to pay my deposit, whoever was at the front desk was very curt (didn't catch her name unfortunately).

Recently we found a tiny kitten and again, Lucks Lane Vet Clinic had availability when our clinic did not. Dr. de Wet was very thorough and genuinely kind-hearted and caring. I was a client of this practice for over five years and had previously left a positive review…read morebecause I was happy with the care my cat received. Unfortunately, my recent experience changed my confidence in the practice. My cat is FIV-positive and has recurrent upper respiratory infections. After completing the prescribed treatment without improvement, I called because he was still congested. I was told he needed another appointment, which I scheduled. On the morning of that appointment, I was notified it was canceled because the veterinarian became ill. I completely understand that illnesses happen. What disappointed me was what happened afterward. I asked whether another veterinarian could see him that day or review his recent exam and treatment history since he had just been seen and had not improved. I was repeatedly told my options were an appointment the following week or an emergency hospital, despite explaining that an emergency visit was not financially feasible. I left feeling that there was no continuity of care for an established patient with a chronic condition. This wasn't a canceled "well visit" it was a sick visit that the clinic canceled without any resolution - such as have another Vet see my cat or at least review his chart and possibly speak with me. I transferred my cat's care to another Veterinary practice, where the veterinarian took the time to evaluate him, perform diagnostics, explain her reasoning, and develop a treatment plan. In the past week, the new Vet's office has seen him twice, has called me twice with updates on his labwork, and is checking in with me tomorrow - before the weekend. Before posting this review, I emailed the owner directly. She responded promptly, apologized, and told me she would investigate because my experience sounded unusual. I appreciated that response. However, despite waiting ONE week, I never received the follow-up I was told to expect. I hope this feedback encourages the practice to improve communication and continuity of care for long-term clients whose pets have chronic or recurring medical conditions. **Original review 2021: The staff and doctors are very friendly and caring. I never wait long for my cat to be seen. The doctors take plenty of time with me to listen to my concerns and give me guidance. This a wonderful office with animal lovers working there!!

I can't speak highly enough about Helping Hands Veterinary. After taking my senior cat to our…read moreregular vet, I was told he would need extensive dental extractions that could cost anywhere from $3,000-$4,000. While researching options, I somehow found myself on Helping Hands' website, and I'm so glad I did. Their pricing was straightforward and transparent, with the flat fee including blood work and everything else needed for the procedure. When I arrived, the intake process took about 30 minutes, and the staff carefully walked me through exactly what they were going to do. They told me I could pick my cat up around 5 PM, which gave me the rest of the day to explore Richmond. While waiting, I grabbed breakfast at The Fancy Biscuit, walked around Virginia Commonwealth University, did the canal walk, learned about the history of the bridge the Confederates destroyed while retreating from Union forces, and even stopped by a brewery with an amazing outdoor area. Richmond ended up being a really great day trip. When I picked my cat up, they told me he did great. He did end up needing many teeth removed, but I could immediately tell he had been well cared for. We're now two days post-op and he's already eating again. They also sent us home with all the medication he needed. This place is absolutely amazing. Affordable, compassionate, organized, and clearly staffed by people who genuinely care about animals.

This place has become incredibly disappointing. I originally found them because they were…read morerecommended as an affordable option. At one point, the basic dental service was around $260. When I called about a month ago, the price had already increased, and now it's over $500 just for the basics. While reading recent reviews, I noticed another customer shared that their dog still had rotten teeth after receiving treatment here and ended up having to go to a different veterinarian for another dental procedure, spending over $2,000 total. That's extremely concerning, especially for those of us with senior dogs. The last thing I want is to put my dogs under anesthesia more than once because a procedure wasn't done properly the first time. My experience with the front desk staff was also frustrating. I simply asked what records and requirements they needed from my veterinarian, such as wellness exams, bloodwork, or other testing. Instead of clearly answering my questions, I felt dismissed and spoken to rudely. The conversation quickly turned into being told that if I used another veterinarian, they would need to perform their own exam anyway. It felt more like they were pushing me toward either their $500 package or their $1,700 package with X-rays rather than helping me understand the requirements. I spent a long time saving up to get dental work done for my two senior dogs, and this experience has made the process much more complicated than it needed to be. At this point, I'm considering staying in New York and finding a local veterinarian instead. It's unfortunate to see a business build its reputation on being affordable and accessible, only to move away from the very reasons so many people chose them in the first place. Even more concerning are reports suggesting that some pets may require additional procedures elsewhere, forcing owners to spend more money and put their beloved pets through anesthesia again. That's something no pet owner wants to experience.

They did not, and I called and left several voicemails but the office was closed. I had to take my dog to the emergency vet on Sunday and have all the tests redone (at the higher, emergency cost) and was told my dog needed to be hospitalized immediately. I received a call back from the doctor on Monday morning and let her know I no longer needed to test results and would like a refund since my dog's life was jeopardized as a result of the delay. She referred me to April, the practice manager who informed me I was overreacting and they would not eat the costs.
