In my line of business, I visit senior living communities all across the valley. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to visit Brookdale Baywood for the first time, and meet Ellie their head of sales. She was very friendly and we had a group meeting or she shared some of the community food which was delicious. There were several residents in around the community when I was there, and they all seemed to be happy and well cared for. I absolutely love Brookdale! My dad is on state assistance and it is beautiful compared to other options that he had! (I was horrified with other places when I was touring assisted living facilities). The staff is wonderful. If there is ever a concern or need Lori or Mike address it immediately. I also switched my dad to the in house doctor for Brookdale and she is wonderful and nice! It makes my life so much easier to have the doctor and cardiologist come to my dad's room instead of me having to drive him around, get his wheelchair in and out of my car, lift him in and out of my car which hurts my back, etc. It is also super convenient to use their pharmacy which saves me time. The caregivers are nice and Brookdale calls me immediately if there is a concern about my dad. The food is good and the head chef is amazing! He is super friendly and caring. I visit my dad about 3-5 days a week so I have a good idea of what Brookdale is like. I also lhow my dad's room is close to the laundry room. If I need to throw in a load of laundry it super convenient. Overall, I am pleased with Brookdale! read more

Yesterday was a long day, our mother passed away in the morning. She thoroughly enjoyed her home away from home. She made some great friends who were more like family. She enjoyed talking to everyone and was truly concerned with everyone's well being. She went to all the opportunities Baywood offered for entertainment. Bingo! Horse Racing! live music! Exercise class! She lived at Brookdale Baywood for 3 years and didn't want to live anywhere else! She was happy. Amy is the new big boss and has been a wonderful new addition to lead the community! The residents all feel she has their best interest and feel at ease talking to her about their concerns. THAT is a HUGE plus! She has shown us a great commitment to our loved ones and has ALWAYS been upfront and honest. Every department at Baywood showed our mom respect, love and friendship! I could go on and on.... We put our mom into the facility after we had a good tour. Thins started to go wrong pretty quickly, Things of hers started to go missing. When we brought it up, we were told that they would look into it. Sorry we are short staffed. She has been there a few months, and the communication between staff is really bad. Last week another resident walked in and assaulted my mom. We were contacted by the night nurse that night. We did not get message until next morning at 6am. When we called the night nurse was still there and told us what happened. we got there by 10:00 am and asked the day shift if we could have an update? They had no idea what we were talking about, asked to talk to the Director, and got another employee that I was not familiar with who apologized but still didn't really know what happened, she said they were short staffed and she was just brought over from another are, we will investigate and hold people accountable. We have asked many times to have the Director to call. Have never gotten a response. The woman that assaulted my Mom walked into her room twice today. We were told that this woman would be moved to another facility. We are removing her from this facility. Think twice before placing a loved one here, They have a lot of smoke and mirrors and no follow through or communication. read more

It's been 2 years since my father was in Brookdale in their Memory Care unit. He was there 6 nights and only the first 3 nights was he given his "as needed" medication (and that is documented in his medication logs we were given. When his behavior declined, they dumped in the ER saying he needed an inpatient psych evaluation. The doctor and social worker at the hospital said that was nonsense and after conversing with the director, suggested my father would be better off in a different facility. We moved him but he died 3 days later. My BIGGEST REGRET is that we ever trusted Brookdale Baywood and their staff. They made my father's last days hell. read more

I trusted they would care for the woman that raised a family of 5 kids...but to our utter disappointment, they treated her like she wasn't even a human being! My mom was a resident at Brookdale Baywood from 2015-2018, and I'm posting this review with her encouragement. I would have done it sooner, but feared retaliation from staff. My mom is physically disabled and needs help with everything from bathing to dressing, as well as transferring, and uses a motorized wheelchair. Throughout all this, I was in constant contact with Brookdale- either their corporate office or the heads of this specific location. I'd speak with someone and they'd make changes, but the changes never stuck. They changed out directors and staff repeatedly, which always gave me hope, but each change brought more of the same, meaning this is a Brookdale corporate problem, not just an issue with this location. Due to length limitations, I'm going to briefly touch on each area. Verbal Abuse: My mom was called "fat" and other derogatory terms by the staff. The staff wasn't fired, but was moved to a different area. Lack of Showers: Policy dictates my mom should have gotten a shower twice per week. There were times she went more than a month. Staff initially blamed my mom saying she refused (she did sometimes when they'd show up unannounced at the end of the day and she was too tired), then said they didn't have time, then they'd lie and say they went to do it and that she had refused, when they'd never gone in at all. Intimidation: When my mom complained about the lack of showers, they pulled her and a caregiver aside, then the director told my mom that if she liked the caregiver, she shouldn't cause a stir and make things hard for her because it would upset the caregiver, which could have consequences. It was worded prettier, but it was a threat. Infestations: Roaches and bedbugs were an ongoing problem. Waits: Pushing the pendant meant nothing. It could be 1-2 hours before someone came. They said it wasn't so and that they tracked it, but I personally witnessed it repeatedly and the staff admitted it was true. Initially, my mom would get frustrated and try to transfer herself so she could get to the bathroom in time, resulting in falls. She ultimately gave up hope of being taken to the bathroom at all, meaning she became reliant on her briefs. There were times she fell and remained on the floor without contact for more than an hour. She'd call us and either we'd come out or we'd call the front desk and then they'd go in. There were also times she waited hours for a necessary change. Failure to Manage Meds: Medication management is a paid service. They have a pharmacy they work with and they're responsible for making sure the meds are always there and are given according to the prescription. My mother went without specific meds repeatedly. The worst was when she came back from oral surgery. Despite having days to fill it, they didn't. The morning after the surgery, she was in tears and still didn't have the meds and they weren't even checking on her. Even when I called, they did nothing. I literally drove down there, spoke with them, and went to go fill them on my own before they finally gave them to her. This was neglectful and inhumane treatment. How they could know a resident was suffering, in tears, and not only not take action, but not even go check on her is beyond belief. (This was the last straw, BTW. We moved her a soon as we could get her in somewhere else.) Staffing: They're always understaffed. There would regularly be one caregiver per floor working a 12-hour shift. If the caregiver went on break, nobody covered the floor in their absence. I spoke with several staff members about this- this was their explanation for long waits and no showers. Meals: My mom said the food was bad. There were also a few times, like post-surgery, when they refused to bring meals to her room as well. Meaning, she went without unless I brought her food. Neglect: In addition to the long waits, my mom was actually told once around 2-3pm that they wouldn't help her transfer again until morning because they were short-staffed, leaving it up to her to decide if she wanted to be in her recliner or wheelchair throughout the rest of the day and night. She opted for her recliner because she couldn't sleep in her wheelchair, meaning she was in it from 3pm until the next morning- no changes and no dinner. Theft: My mom got a shipment of briefs sent to her each month with her name clearly on the invoice. The staff would keep it, then claim she didn't get them. Again, the reason why we stayed with it so long was because it looked like they were trying to fix things, and things would get better for a little while after we complained. They'd treat the bedbugs. They'd replace staff. An employee would take ownership for a problem. But, the good staff members never stayed long, and care would eventually slide back to where it was. I have reported this location to every agency that will listen, from the state through the insurance company. I can only hope it gets shut down to save others this heartache. read more

I'm sending this to let people know what I think of Brookdale-Baywood. I'm a Widow and the expense of my home and it's upkeep was too much for me. I searched and checked out many places over the last 3 years. I came to Brookdale in Sept. 2018 and found my NEW home. I was totally impressed by how everything was kept up. I was very surprised to find out whatever I needed was included. That included laundry, housekeeping, and 3 delicious hot meals. There also a bus that will take you to appointments twice a week. I'm VERY happy to state that I not only found my NEW home but more importantly I now have found my NEW FAMILY! read more

Not a good place to be. My aunt lives here and her options are limited because she's on state care. The staff is rude. I have been scolded by desk people because I didn't sign in, as if I'm a child. I have gone off to find help before for my aunt and haven't been able to find a single employee at the desk or anywhere. Sometimes she pushes her call button and it takes 40 minutes or more before someone comes to help. A few weeks ago she missed an appointment because nobody came to help her get ready for almost an hour. One night I spent 45 minutes looking for someone, literally walking floor to floor, and I think there were only two people on duty. There are more than 100 residents and 3-4 floors. What if there is a fire or emergency? I think this place is dangerous, and my aunt is moving as soon as she gets in someplace better. I really hate having her stuck here. read more

My name is Ben and my grandma is staying at Brookdale Baywood at this time. I wouldn't say that it's not a good place to be because all the staff are very professional and compassionate. My grandma always tells me that she is getting all the care that she needs as far as bathing, dressing, and medication management. She also complimented on how good the food is and how someone would always push her wheelchair back to her room after meals. Sometimes, demanding people wants everything done as soon as possible that's why they complain all the time. Visit Brookdale and you'll see what I am talking about. I use to work for Brookdale Baywood Senior Living and didn't hesitate to walk out of that building and quit my job. After 4 months of employment with Brookdale Baywood, I witnessed a lot of bad things like moving residents from one room to another because of bed bugs and roaches. Residents would come up to me to complain about bed bugs and roaches crawling all over their beds and when I told my boss about it, she totally ignored me and told me that the problem is not for us to solve. She said that our job is to book prospective residents to move in and not to take care of roaches and bed bugs. I also witnessed my boss lying to prospective residents and making false promises. This is what I see everyday... Residents would sit on their wheelchair for at least over an hour waiting for caregivers to help them go to their rooms after meals in the dining room. Residents also complained of not taking showers for weeks. Giving them medications always not on time. I would wheel residents to their rooms to help them out while my boss is just sitting in her office munching on snacks and having coffee. She sees me wheeling residents up and down the building and didn't even offer to help me knowing that she doesn't have anything else to do. I also witness the front desk clerk yelling at one of the resident because she didn't want her talking to me in the lobby. She even told the resident to just sit down and be quiet or go to her room and take a nap. Brookdale Baywood is not a good place to be because there's bed bugs and roaches everywhere and they will not do anything to fix the problem. They will do anything and everything to lie to prospective residents so they can just have good ratings. Don't be fooled by what they tell you in marketing because I've been there and witnessed all the lies that marketing say to people. As a son who's mother was a resident for 4 years, I would say that the care, she received, at the facility was excellent. A major reason was due to the fact that my wife and I were there numerous times each week to address any issues that she couldn't resolve herself. We got to know the staff and many of the residents which was a big plus. She was a leader among the residents and one who got respect from all the staff. Let me say that it is very important to visit any facility before picking one out. Although there is a very high turn-over of personnel at this facility, they are typically no different than others it's size. It is extremely important for family member to be as involved as they can be in the care of the resident. Voice your concerns and attend as many functions they offer as possible. My suggestion for potential new resident is to have their family do the following: Check out the grounds, Schmooze with the residents, Talk with family members, Ask tough and important questions, Check the turnover of personnel, Have a meal, Give a smell and sound test, Make a safety check of the resident's room, halls and common areas and Visit during off hours as well as Saturdays and Sunday.
