Mom's house was becoming a challenge for her to keep up. When concerns about her safety and social well-being were observed, we began looking at senior living communities in San Jose. We visited several places, however Marbella ISL stood out above the others. The sales associates welcomed our multiple visits and answered our questions. We noticed a welcoming atmosphere with each visit. Marbella was the only senior community where we observed staff members engaging residents in a cheerful, respectful and caring manner; staff spoke of residents as "family". Mom is delighted with her decision to move into an Independent Living apartment at Marbella. As a family, we are delighted that she can "age in place" at Marbella, who also offer Assisted Living and Memory Care services. Mom has made many new friends and enjoys her conversations with them in the dining room (She enjoys the appetizing dishes to select from). Mom participates in a wide variety of daily activities offered at Marbella. We are pleased to see her actively investing in her health and regularly attending fitness classes led by instructor Cyrus T., who motivates residents through his encouragement and humor! Our family frequently visits Mom at Marbella and staff members always welcome us to participate in activities and events with her. Mom feels at home! read more

I visited my friends father here with my friend! My father in law stays at a converted hotel off blossom hill and I was shocked just how much nicer, cozier, bigger and quieter Brookdale is! Wow! Now I'm sure it cost more but not surprising that in every way it's so much nicer given the location! Heck if I lived here I would go 60 feet away to uncle John's breakfast place I think it's called and just relax there. The front of this place reminds me of the show " Dallas"....Big rooms real carpet it's like a 5 star hotel inside! read more

We placed my mother in memory care at Brookdale San Jose a few months ago and couldn't be happier! The care she has received has been attentive, compassionate and loving. She is able to have some independence and at the same time staff to help her navigate through her day. That included helping her bath, select clothes and making sure she is ready to start the day( even taking the time to braid her hair!) There are activities planned throughout the day and residents are encouraged to join in. We have always felt welcome and even encourage us to stay for activities or a meal. Placing a loved one into memory care is never easy but everyone at Brookdale has helped us and smoothed the way and eased our anxiety ! read more

I just spent a month at Brookdale San Jose while my house was being worked on. Warning to anyone considering this place: if you have a service dog, don't apply to live there. Two residents made life miserable for me and my dog, and the Director hassled me and didn't even talk to those residents, although I adhered to all responsibilities and rules and they repeatedly broke two major ones listed in the handbook everyone receives. Although the rest of the staff and residents were comforting and supportive, I couldn't tolerate living there any longer and instead came home to a house still being worked on. read more

I moved into this place & it was the worst 3 months ever. Along with being the only black resident, I had to endure a lot of racial comments from some staff " Ryan & Devon main ones," & many residents." Gordon J & Keneth K" Growing up in the time that I did I developed tough skin so I would let comments roll off my back. But the way I was pushed out of the community was what got me. Like many seniors, I am on a fixed income. My church helped me with payments. At this time my church was running a little behind on assisting me. Ryan the Executive Director barged into my room while I was sleeping & woke me up. He came in with boxes and said pack your things I'm dropping you off at your kid's house!! He packed all my belongings wasn't much but clothes, food, medication & reading books. He did exactly that drove me 2hrs to my son's house unloaded my things on the curb let me out and drove off. I had to walk up the walkway and knock to see if my son was home. No notice was given to me no court date no 3 days notice no proper eviction!!! Stay far away!!!!! read more

Other than some communications issues with a Former management person, our family's experience with Brookdale Senior Living in San Jose has been excellent. Care staff here are well-trained, compassionate and professional, attentive. My father lived in the San Jose assisted living apartments for 2 years, and had only good things to say about his apartment, staff and services. He required a high level of care in the year prior to his passing and as he declined, the level of care was increased as he needed more help with day-to-day living. His last few weeks were spent in the ClareBridge Memory Care Unit, in Hospice care, provided by Brookdale Hospice. They kept him comfortable and in good spirits until his time came. We would not hesitate to recommend Brookdale San Jose to anyone that wants their elderly relative to live in a clean, safe and caring environment. read more

Mixed experience. Independant living was pretty good. When his health turned Brookdale went downhill. Hard to get someone involved to help, poor communication, conflicting information. We spent days caring for him with no help. Once we navigated the system we had to move to assisted living where it got worse. Hospice care was not provided as promised, we had to stay there to insure he was cared for. Response was poor until we complained. Just seemed like most employees didnt care. That said there were some great employees that were compassionate and helpful. Front desk staff were a big help. I know leadership has changrd there. I hope they are not only going to focus of making it look prettier and address some of the real problems. Quite a disappointment overall. read more

This place, when it was the Atrium years back, was amazing. We placed my grandmother here and with the location and amenities, it was fantastic. Under Brookdale, however, this place has taken a nose dive of epic proportions. Increased costs with less service is only the tip of the iceberg. From billing to food services to facilities maintenance...all below average. The clientele that live here are still as friendly as ever, but I doubt they realize the lack of quality and the abundance of decline that's permeating this facility. My mother has been at brookdale for about 6 months. Worst experience I have ever seen at a care facility. All the concerns I've had for the past 6 months have never been addressed. Myself and other family members would call and leave messages about our concerns and would never get a call back. My mother fell down in her appartment on nov. 5th 2019 some time in the evening and pushed her emergency button that was around her neck and never got a response. A family member went to pick her up the next morning and found her lying on the floor. He asked her how long have you been lying there and she said all night long. Then he asked did you push the call button, she said yes, then he tried to push it to see if it worked and it still didnt work and nobody called or came to assist. We then contacted the front desk and they said we will follow up on this and have someone contact you as soon as possable. Nobody called. We tried calling for several days and leaving messages and still no response. My mother has been in rehab and still in rehab sense this accured. I believe shes hurt her self more by trying to get to a phone to call someone but never mad it to the phone. Family members and my self call the facility many time to discuss this matter and nobody calls. I called kim that works for the facility today acting like I'm a potential client to see if she would call me. I left a message and sure enough, she returned my call within 10 minutes. We tried call kim many times and dont get a return call until today because she thought I was a potential client. This should never happen when elderly people rely on care. I will be consulting legal action soon. Kim the director met with me and family members on the first day when we were looking for a care facility for a mother, and we asked if they can build a fence around her porch and she said in front of 3 of us that we can have one built and when my mom is no longer there they will reimbursed us for the fence. Now that we no longer want her in the facilty because of lack of care, kim told me she never said that to us. She said it's not in the contract so we will not be reimbursing you for the fence. She flat out lied to all of us and said she never said that. Very disappointed in the whole ordeal. My wife will be quitting her job to care for my mother. Stay away from this facility and do your research before picking a care place for your loved ones. read more

The staff at Brookdale have been excellent in helping coordinate and provide services for my mother. From basic wellness needs to offering various activities to keep mom active this team (Dina Duckworth and Paula Pine) have made it seem like mom is at home away from home. The dining room has good quality options and a pleasant environment to share a meal together. read more

DO NOT PLACE YOUR LOVED ONE AT THIS FACILITY! This is an updated review. I posted my first one star review in January 2017 and hoped that my father's care at Brookdale Memory Care, which is named Clare Bridge, would improve. It didn't. I placed my dad under Brookdale's care in part because the marketing woman told me that the Clare Bridge staff were highly trained; she gave me a fancy binder filled with information, but she couldn't tell me what Clare Bridge meant. I should have taken that as a sign of the incompentence of the staff at Brookdale. The first week I got calls everyday with questions about my dad's medications and behaviour issues. Prior to dad moving into Brookdale, I filled out a detailed history of my dad, per Brookdale's request, which described his common dementia behaviour issues and medications but was told by the Medical Technicians, who over saw the caregivers, that no one in Clare Bridge had read this history. When I called the Clare Bridge Director's number, listed in the binder, I only got ringing, no answer. Afer a few weeks, and many more calls from the staff, I was told that the director had moved to another position. This was another warning sign. My father lived at Brookdale Memory Care from December 2016 until August 2, 2017, when he died. During those seven months, Brookdale had a revolving door of management; a new Assisted Living Director was hired in January 2017; she left in the spring, along with the head of the Medical Technicians. Brookdale did hire a competent woman from another Brookdale Calre Bridge in January 2017, but she wasn't named Director of Memory Care until July 2017. But, the woman did bring needed activites and professionalism to the staff, so we decided to keep dad where he was. Dad was growing frailer, wheel chair bound after fracturing his hip prior to moving to Brookdale, and he seemed content, until a very disruptive room mate moved in (dad had one of the few shared rooms, which fit his budget). The room mate a very active man, kept entering dad's room at night, urinated on my dad's floor and climbed into bed with him. The man was moved to a private room but still wandered into other rooms, defecated and urinated on floors and furniture. This was a last straw. I was in the process of looking into other facilities, but my dad became very ill, was hospitalized and needed to be admitted into hospice. I was reluctant to send dad back to Brookdale, was comtemplating him going to Lady Fatima Villa, an extremely competent and caring skilled nursing facility where dad recooperated from hip surgery, but Brookdale assured me that they could handle hospice care. They lied. Dad's care the last week of his life was a disaster. The caregivers, a revolving door of faces, were unsure how to position dad, which left him gasping for air and crying out for help. The medical techinicians didn't administer the hospice medications correctly. After four frustrating days, we had a care conference with Brookdale management, minus a new Assited LIving Director who was on leave, and Seasons Hospice, an excellent company. The Season's nurse told Brookdale that what we were expecting from the staff was CAREGIVER 101! I complained that the staff seemed so uncomfortable caring for dad, and that I didn't recognize most the caregivers. That's when I was told that Brookdale was hiring temps! Seasons put together a list of requirements and expectations for my dad's care. I requested that only caregivers who knew my dad could attend to him. Finally, given proper medication, my dad died peacefully that afternoon, but he should have never suffered the previous days. There are much better Assisted Living/Memory Care options in the Bay Area, like Carlton Plaza, where my parents lived for three years, my mom in very well-run memory care, my dad in assisted living. Unfortunately, my parents had to move when my dad's care costs increased. They moved to residential care, which was good until the owner decided to sell the business. It's challenging to find good care, but Brookdale Clare Bridge (whatever that means) certainly isn't the place to entrust your loved one's care. read more

My parent has been in the memory care unit at Brookdale San Jose for a while now and the service we have received has been disappointing at every turn. The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. They say they will comply with a request and then almost never follow through. This care facility was over sold and under delivers. I know the task they take on is monumental, and the individual caregivers are all very nice, but I must say the organization simply cannot deliver. I don't see an option below one star, so I will choose one star. read more

If I could give this place a negative review, I would, but that's not an option. From my personal experience, memory care residents are neglected. Their sheets are soiled, and they do not always care to change them. Assisted living residents have many valid complaints, and nothing is ever done to correct their issues. Employees are treated like garbage, and are under appreciated. It's a sad place to be all around!!! Please take my advice, do not work there, and if you love your family, please find somewhere else. Many residents I still communicate with there, are still telling me about the terrible things there at Brookdale. read more

How long is The Atrium going to keep stringing everyone along and taking deposits on the new Assisted Living addition to the facility? They have completed the work and remodeling and say that the only reason that the tenants have not been able to move in is because The State of California has not finished with the approval process for opening up a new Assisted Living Facility. Fine. So the State has not finished their job. WHY DOESNT THE ATRIUM COMMUNICATE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE PLACED DEPOSITS TO HOLD THE APARTMENTS AND TELL THEM THE PROGRESS OF THE PROJECT? The new facility sounds fantastic. It even LOOKS fantastic. How can we get the State to come in and finish the approval process? Why doesn't The Atrium staff keep in contact with its customers? A follow up to Glynis' message below. Nothing is different when dealing with the managers and director for house cleaning. Relatively lives on 3rd floor, house keeping leaves the patio door open and screen door unlocked. This is a hazard for any tenant. Complained to house keeping director 2x and director -- no response and no acknowledgment of my messages, and finally the house cleaing still sos. DON'T - If you're thinking about putting your loved one in Claire Bridge Memory Care Center at Brookdale - DON'T While my mom was a resident of Claire Bridge Memory Care at Brookdale on Blossom River Way in San Jose we had constant issues with housekeeping. Her room was to be cleaned once a week, which would include her bed being striped and remade with clean sheets and her laundry done. From the month we moved mom in we were constantly emailing the director and housekeeping manager to inform them that her room was not being cleaned and her bed not being stripped. This was a huge issue because my mom stayed in bed 24/7 other than to go down to the dining room for her meals. My mom has 3 sets of different colored sheets so we would know from one week to the next if her sheets were being changed. In total frustration I would bring a dust mop and dust her floors and furniture and change her sheets. Some days I would visit and her laundry basket was overflowing with unwashed clothes. We would complain at the family meetings and they'd say they're "working on the problem". Things actually got better for about 3 months and then everything went back to the way it had been. We started looking for different homes that we could transfer mom to because it just was totally unacceptable. We were very concerned that the move might be too much for mom but we were desperate. Mom was a high functioning dementia patient and somewhat of an introvert. We feel that she was "forgotten" quite a bit of the time because she kept to herself in her room. There is not enough staff to handle all the residents. There is a huge turnaround of staff, which makes me wonder "why". We now have mom in a very nice board and care home. She is getting excellent care there. There are 5 patients there and the ratio of staff to patient is much much better. They seem to really care about the patients. The home is immaculate. I wish we'd transferred mom to this home 1- 1/2 years ago when we first realized that the services at Claire Bridge fell way short of what we were told and expected. And the cost is $2500 less than what mom was paying at Brookdale. Hindsight is 20/20. When we cleaned out mom's room at Claire Bridge we saw terrible amount of dust and clutter on the floor and when moving a hutch in her bathroom we found a cockroach! Claire Bridge Memory Center cannot seem to get their act together even though there is a very vocal group of family members at the Family Support Meetings. Find a really nice Board and Care Home instead; they will give much better care than at Claire Bridge Memory Care. read more

This is a new review after posting about problems earlier this year that were never rectified. We have been trying to get a refund of nearly $7k because Mom has moved to a new place. First staff said it would take 14 days, then a month and now up to two month because it comes from "Corporate" in Wisconsin. Although we were looking for a new place to move mom anyways, we were forced to make a move in days after Brookdale suddenly stated they would not accept her back in the unit. You see, Brookdale staff sent mom to the hospital for the third time. When asked who determinedly she needed to be sent to the hospital, nobody could or would fess up nor could they say exactly why she was being sent. This is the service and type of problems typical of Brookdale even though you'd expect better from a "Memory Care" facility's. But every hospital trip comes with an ambulance bill and an opportunity for Brookdale to ask you to leave. Brookdale misrepresented the services they could supply. They are understaffed with people who get a minimal amount of training. If you are considering Brookdale, keep in mind that they have a great LOOKING facility that is great at draining your wallet but you'll only be happy if your loved one is totally independent looking for an expensive apartment. Otherwise, you'd be best to avoid this place at all costs. read more

I am the caregiver of an elderly neighbor who is in the process of moving in. Together, we visited many independent living facilities throughout San Jose and our favorite was Brookdale. The staff and residents have all been warm, friendly and helpful. There are many activities available. The facilities are clean. The food in the dining room is varied and tasty, and they were able to accommodate my vegan diet with a veggie burger and delicious salad bar. read more

This is only about the Memory Care section (Clare Bridge). The care is OK but beware. The "Fees and Personal Service Plan" says the fees are "inclusive...adding peace of mind as resident needs may increase." My MIL was 99 with dementia and poor hearing and vision; she was there 6 months. The first 4 months were fine and she got good care. Then she had some behavior issues (more confusion and agitation) so her meds were changed. Since the new meds might make her dizzy, we were told we had to add (at our expense) 1-on-1 "companion" care all night for two weeks while she adjusted, in case she got up at night and fell. But when the two weeks were up, they told us we had to continue the 1-on-1 at night "for her safety", because she woke up early and didn't want to go back to bed and the aides were too busy and too few to stay with her. Then two weeks later they told us we had to pay for 1-on-1 care for her 18 hours a day (!!!) because she had had a melt-down in the afternoon and was yelling and it took them an hour to calm her down. Around that same time I noticed that they often didn't have full staffing for the day shifts, their regular care aides were working double shifts, they were using temporary staff who weren't trained for dementia residents, and other residents had added 1-on-1 care. We moved her out because she couldn't afford to pay $13,500/month for 18 hours of 1-on-1 care in addition to the $7,995 being paid to Brookdale for her "all inclusive" care. (BTW, we moved her to a "board and care home" that cost less than Brookdale even without the 1-on-1 cost and gave her better care. I'd always been afraid of those places but there were 2 very dedicated and caring aides for 6 residents and they took great care of her until she passed away.) read more

My option on Care... While on the surface it a nice environment and of course it is expensive. you better check your parent often.! My Mom was in "independent living" and was left in a poor state of health. She unable to get out of her chair for an extended time. I was able to get her to the ER. After treatment she she reported Doctor told her she was two steps from death . I went to clean up her unit and was denied access due to family matter. . I reported the unit was left unlocked from the out side. The Senior Director Michelle Merrit stated that is not possible 3x. then found it to be a fact.. and they had four people watching me very closely . So be for warned ! My impression is all about the money read more

I would not recommend this retirement home to anyone other than for a family member that would like to live in an institution. The ED is dishonest in her communications, and is VERY controlling. The residents are bored and many rules are made up in order to control and over bill the residents. I would be happy to give details for anyone thinking of moving their loved one into Brookdale, San Jose. read more

This review is more about the Corporate HR department but I could not find an appropriate place to write this review and because the job was in San Jose, I will place it here. A few months ago, I applied for a Director of Nursing position; went through several interviews, filled out many pages of documentation online, background check and everything else. I was formally offered the position, received, signed and returned the offer letter. I waited a couple days for an email or phone call notifying me about orientation. After not hearing from HR, I sent an email asking for details regarding my orientation.....days went by. no response. Then I called and left a voice message.........days went by, no return call. I sent an email to the original recruiting HR member apologizing for whatever it is that I may have, even though I did nothing to be treated like this, asking for an explanation and even wishing them good luck in their company expansion. Now, months later, still no response or even an acknowledgement of the the receipt of my emails and calls. read more
