Toured Atria Willow Glen as a potential independent living community for my mother. They also have assisted living and memory care, should she need it. Atria is a gorgeous place with huge trees, gardens, koi pond, and creek. The person who gave us the tour was the memory care director. She was very warm and knowledgeable and genuinely interested in getting to know my mom and her current living/health situation. The dining room is clean and spacious and there was a friendly warmth from the staff and residents. I was pleased to find out in addition to three meals a day, they serve coffee and breakfast all day until 5pm. When a resident is sick or just doesn't feel like going to the dining room, they can have food delivered to their apartment. There is also the option of cooking in the small kitchen in their apartment. Atria has lots of activities and events for residents. They go to interesting places like San Francisco, Monterey, etc. There are groups to join, too, like a knitting or writing group. Garden plots are available in the community garden and there is a heated outdoor swimming pool. My mom loved the apartment she was shown. Since this was the first community she looked at, we are going to tour a few more before making a decision. It's hard to imagine a nicer place. read more

Just a concerned citizen - I love that the seniors get outings to shop and experience some independence. However, I find it very unsafe to not have personnel on site monitoring their movements in the shopping plaza. I just encountered a resident who forgot where she needed to meet for pickup. I give credit to how quickly they arrived, but even the man who answered the phone seemed rude and lacked compassion. I worry because the Almaden plaza usually draws homeless as well as thieves. God forbid they lose their memory at the wrong time. I hope this is an issue with rapid resolve for the sake of others' elderly loved ones. read more

I just want to thank Felicia for helping me with my Mom. It's very hard to place a loved one after they have dementia. Atria has a very caring staff and the outside surroundings make you feel at peace. Its a beautiful area with lots of trees like camping, only in San Jose. Unfortunately, my mom's dementia is severe and she will need a higher level of care but Felicia was very nice and offered any kind of help she could give me. This Bldg is about 6O yrs old - air conditioners hanging out windows, floors are carpeted - 1 washer 1 dryer for ea 21 Apts. No Central Air in Main Bldg. Or elsewhere. My mom has resided at the Atria Willow Glen Memory Care unit for 2 years now. I can't say enough good things about this place. My mom was a very difficult case 2 years ago when she first moved here. They were able to get my mom integrated after about 6 months and eventually learned how to interact with her. Once they did, things really improved for my mom to the point where I would say her mental condition has actually improved to some extent due to the constant interaction and activities that they provide for her. To some extent I think COVID has actually benefited the residents in this place as well because there is more personalized attention due to the fact that family members can't visit as much. I have to say that the people at this place truly go above and beyond what one might ordinarily expect. For example the director Richard spends time trying to help my mom feel at ease, he finds and plays music for her and even got an AI cat for the residents to play with. My mom also likes to dress up, Sheryl and Maribel who are caretakers will actually help my mom dress up and do different hairstyles. Saada gives her a manicure every week. My mom loves the extra attention!! Also a special shout out to 2 other caretakers, Lilibeth and Catherine for helping arrange video calls with my mom during COVID while still having to take care of the other residents. This place is amazing, if you have a loved one who needs memory care in the San Jose area you'll be hard pressed to find a better place. read more

It is more important that we warn anyone considering Atria of your predatory practices. I see there is no defense of the structure of your "facility fee" which is understandable seeing how it is unreasonable. If Atria is really concerned about your "commitment to being a great place to live" as a company you would make it clear to those signing contracts with you what they are signing. Atria would not just give a big legal middle finger when questions are brought after you had already pulled the wool over residents' eyes. OR BETTER YET, you would fix your "facility fee" system to be fair. I work with elderly clients specializing in Alzheimers. The thing I loved about Atria is their willingness to help provide my client with the most independent life they were capable of living. As my client's illness progressed and was moved into memory care, I've been even more impressed. The staff is caring, the activities engaging and the residents are always engaged to their capacity. We moved my mother from another memory care facility in 10/2021. The cost for a private unit at Atria was also one of the more reasonable considering how well-maintained the facilities and property are. I met directly with the Memory Care Director, Richard Olson, who addressed my concerns due to the issues that I had with the previous facility. Atria appears to be a smaller, more personal, memory care organization where there is more of a chance that the quality of care could be maintained at a high level and they have a good staff/resident ratio. Mom is involved in most activities, seems more interactive, and is much happier, and they have prompted Mom to walk again, without using her wheelchair. Worst customer service. I'm a home health nurse and I've been to many places but this place is ridiculous. And for me to have to write this review could only mean that it didn't have once or twice...but many times. 1)I'm waiting at the reception area for assistance and I stand there looking stupid because the staff LOOKS as if they Are busy. I asked some questions and they give me a side way look as if why it would be at the front desk instead of the resident's building. Totally useless and disappointing. 2)Then I go to the resident's building, one of the regular staff greets me with an attitude like I'm interrupting something. 3) my second visit to this place, the staff in the same building doesn't even know their own residents and insisted that the resident was in this area, which the resident was not. Very frustrating and UNPROFESSIONAL. The only upside is the building director guy, very friendly and welcoming. read more

My parents moved to Atria over a year ago. They found the perfect place right on the beautiful dog park that is on the grounds. (the park has trees and benches in it, so residents can bring their dogs to play, and relax in a peaceful setting). I've been impressed by so many aspects of this senior living environment. Initially, my mom was completely resistant to moving from her two-story house, and after touring five different senior living places around the Bay Area, this was the last place we looked. Immediately, Dad loved the idea of having a place that he could let his beloved dog, Buddy, right out the back gate of the available unit to exercise. Curt, the director, even agreed to enlarge their patio, so they could comfortably fit their patio furniture, lots of plants, and have an open area to themselves. My mom loved swimming in the pool, they both go to lectures, participate in the cocktail hours, the birthday activities honoring residents every month, and the many other activities provided for residents. Through COVID, it has been challenging, with the curtailing of most of the social activities, but the management is slowly getting residents together again for small group activities, and they have opened the dining room to limited groups of residents. During COVID, the staff also has been diligent about taking the residents' temperatures twice a day and wearing masks. The grounds are beautiful, with the koi ponds, the large trees, the wide walkways, and the library is stocked with books. The living room area in the main building is where residents can gather for the Super Bowl, and other activities, there is a puzzle table, a Bistro constantly stocked with snacks, ice cream, coffee, and other beverages and open all day, and an exercise room is also located there. I especially loved that a caring exercise instructor personally came to my parents' place once a week to do exercises with them for an hour. Plus my dad enjoys walking Buddy around the grounds, and I have walked with him down Gaton, and through the pristine and green neighborhoods surrounding Atria. Yesterday, we visited my parents' home, which is being rented by family members. My mom exclaimed, as she struggled to negotiate all of the stairs, "Oh my! We could never live here at our age!" haha I am so appreciative that Atria provides a safe, healthy environment for my 89-year-old parents to live and thrive in their older years. read more

My parents have lived at Atria Willow Glen for 3 years. They both have Alzheimer's and live in the Madrone Memory Care community in a one-bedroom apartment within the locked facility. They have a balcony with a view of trees and creek. The staff are incredible, starting with the Memory Care Director, Richard Olson, who is professional, knowledgeable and kind. The staff are respectful and caring and keep me informed of issues. Madrone has a spacious yard area where residents enjoy sunshine, outdoor meals and activities. My mother lived in Atria Willow Glen for well over two years and I'm sad to have to move her out since she's been so happy there. We're only moving because I had a career change that took me to another state. The outside grounds at this Atria are beautiful, the staff kind, the activities fun (from weekly trips to the library, to local plays and shopping excursions) -- overall a positive and healthy living environment. She was living in Independent Living so I can't speak to the Assisted Living or Memory Care, however if I was to do it again I wouldn't hesitate to move a loved-one into this community. It's nothing like the convalescent homes that my grandmother stayed in decades ago -- this is a lovely place. read more

My experience with Atria was very positive. My Mom lived at Atria for 5 years and enjoyed the residents, staff and all the activities. She was especially fond of the writing class. The class had two books published and a third one is due out in November. The meals are creative and delicious. The dining room servers are polite and always accommodating. As guests, our family was always welcomed by everyone and treated very well. The entire dining room staff is amazing and efficient. Tony was especially kind to my Mom and our family. We will always be grateful for Tony's kindness and for the kindness of the entire dining staff. We enjoyed many meals with my Mom. Monthly birthday celebrations were amazingly special with filet mignon, lamb, and many other birthday specialties featured each month. On Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, there were elaborate barbecues, complete with live entertainment. Families are always welcome to join in the festivities at Atria. All things considered , I think Atria is reasonably priced. Not only are meals included, but weekly laundry, weekly housekeeping, shopping trips, outings to museums, sight-seeing trips, grocery and pharmacy trips, along with a myriad of daily activities that includes bingo, various games, current events, crafts, and exercise classes, are all included with the monthly rent. Residents are encouraged to participate in the Ambassador program and to be an active part of the Atria community. My Mom made a lot of friends at Atria and it was always a joy visiting with the residents and the Atria staff. I am especially grateful to Anjelica, Felicia, and Kurt for helping our family during a very difficult time when our Mom needed more care. The Atria staff was instrumental in helping find the right place when my family and I were in desperate need of help. Everyone on staff at Atria was wonderful during a difficult time. Victoria, Alex, and Julia were especially kind and receptionists, Sierra, Genevieve, and everyone on the front desk were always willing to help and very friendly. During the past 5 years, the housekeeping department, Ilda and Maria were always there to help when needed. The maintenance crew hung pictures and helped when things broke and needed repair or replaced. The kitchen staff and wait people - all respectful to my Mom and to me! This is my third review in my four-year residency at Atria Willow Glen, and I am writing this to counter my revious unflattering review. After discussing my issues with care and meals with Kurt Grsu, the director, I now realize that my expectations were unrealistic in such a large community. I may want my life in assisted living to be the same as it was when I lived independently; however, I'mjust fooling myself, as With 300 residents management must consider the desires of the majority of the residents, not those of one individual resident. My Mom has spent the past 6 years in different Assisted Living communities, one in Nashville, another north of Detroit. Her experiences at both of these two locations were very inconsistent and at times, downright chaotic. We moved her from Michigan to California and into Atria Willow Glen two weeks ago and are impressed with the overall quality of experience. Mom was assessed for the need for Memory Care, so we expected some difficult adjustments. The speed with which she has engaged with her community is amazing. It is all due to the caring, professionalism, training, and pride-of-experience that are so apparent at Atria. Every staff member's name and years of service are worn as a badge of pride. We are still learning the members. Every staff person seems like a 'star' to my Mom and to us. We also want to mention that the front office staff, especially Felicia Horkins, was most helpful in educating us on Atria and securing our trust. She consistently came through on her commitments. Atria brings a level of calm competence and happiness. We are hoping this will continue for years for my Mom and us. read more

Attria Willow Glenn has a section for dementia patients that is well run and caring. Our dad, after having been abused at "The Mansion" in Santa Cruise, found a good home here where the people are caring and often went out of their way to make him comfortable. We look around for a long time to find such a facility. Avoid the Mansion at all costs. read more

This is by the far the best memory care in the area, all do to the wonderful director Richard Olson. He is very passionate and committed to his residents and their families. He is also very knowledgeable with the Alzheimer-dementia disease and makes sure the needs of all his residents are being met. My mother and my mother in law lived in Memory Care at the Atria. My mother in law had a brief stay in Assisted Living. We had to move from Memory Care as she needed more care. Our experience with Assisted Living and the director was not a good one, but Memory Care was very good. The caregivers are patient and caring and Maricella, the activities director, is wonderful. The entire staff from housekeepers to the director, Richard Olson was so helpful, caring, hard working, friendly,and supportive. Support is crucial for a family with loved ones with dementia. Richard was a wealth of information and always responded to any questions and concerns. It is a great place for people that prefer private rooms too. My one big complaint is the Atria's policy for not giving "as needed" medications for diarrhea etc. It is not good for the residents and causes unnecessary delays and suffering waiting for doctor approvals for any over the counter med and often requires family to leave work to provide the meds. I also would have preferred that there was more support for aging in place for people that end up in wheelchairs and then having to move out. I think the grounds are nice and again, I can't say enough about the people in Memory Care. read more

My mother changed her residence here about 6 months ago. We have had several interactions with the staff and front desk. On the night before her death, she asked for some ice cream from the cafeteria, who were still serving the residents. They refused. This is a classic example of why I will never recommend this facility to any elderly person. They are, as a whole, uninterested, not empathic, and very indifferent to the care and needs of their residents, especially those who require more TLC. They didn't blink an eye when we informed them our mother had died, just asking us when we could expect to get her things out of her unit. Wow. Please look elsewhere if you are seeking a caring, responsive facility for your parent. read more

My 91-yr old Mom was in an independent living apartment for several years until this month when her health declined and she had to move elsewhere to receive the level of care she needs. Here are my observations: 1. Mom was able to stay independent for as long as she did entirely due to a caring staff that went beyond the call of duty to help her out, even when she didn't ask for help. 2. The public areas were always clean, warm and inviting. The landscaping between the garden-apartment buildings was always immaculate. Love the koi pond, the swimming pool, the fruit and flowering trees. 3. There were at least 8 activities to choose from each day. There were many musical activities, which Mom loved. But there were also weekly sightseeing trips, shopping trips, group walks, current events, exercising, and so forth. 4. There was a large number of very friendly residents. Mom found some favorites and it always brightened her day to sit with them at lunch or dinner. 5. When Mom wasn't quite herself, the Atria staff took it upon themselves to call us and let us know. Good thing. Mom had undiagnosed pneumonia which greatly weakened her. Their proactive action allowed Mom to get the treatment she needed. 6. We often joined Mom for holiday meals. I can honestly say they were excellent and there was a good variety. Even if you don't like the daily specials, there's a good sized list of items that are available every day. And the wait staff came to know her preferences, how she liked her meals cooked, and they took pains to please her. 7. When we were moving Mom's furnishings out, we stopped in to talk with Kurt Gursu, the Executive Director. Here's a guy who used to seek my mother out, ask her how things were. When she complained about this minor thing or that, he actually looked into the matter and got back to her, occasionally making changes for the betterment of the community. On occasion, Kurt sat down to lunch with Mom. He made her feel very special. He generously gave us recommendations for care providers even after Mom was no longer a resident. He didn't have to do it. He willingly offered the information. 8. I spoke with Angelica today, the smiling person at the front desk. She asked with sincerity how Mom was feeling and told me how she missed Mom. This is no act. She intends to visit Mom on her own day off. Who does that? 9. This is a caring, devoted staff. That is what matters the most at a community like Atria. Atria staff, we are grateful for all you have done for Mom. You made life enjoyable for her and showed her kindness. Thanks to all! read more

I'm familiar with the independent living side of the Atria as I had a relative living here for several years (and who would have considered moving into the assisted living side when it recently became necessary had there not been a several months waiting period as our family has been pleased with the responsiveness of the Atria management). Unlike some of the other reviewers, our family's experience has been that the staff have been professional, courteous, and caring. When I would visit my aunt, at least once or twice a month, the front desk staff checked in on who I was (to ensure the safety of the residents and that I legitimately should be on-site), the wait-staff in the dining hall conversed pleasantly with the residents and guests and the activities director took the time to have a conversation with me and show me around the building even though my aunt didn't usually participate in the many and diverse activities that are planned and offered for residents since she preferred informal chats with her neighbors over meals, reading by the ponds and pool and relaxing in her own apartment. Even after a small fire in the main building last year, the staff took extra effort to communicate with the residents, ensure everyone's safety and make arrangements for care and continuity in the short period while they restored things. I also saw staff responsive to my aunt when she needed assistance getting up after a fall and calling to check in on her when she'd forgotten to let staff know she'd not be attending a meal as she was at a family gathering off-site. Truthfully, as someone who lives in the bay area and is aware of the high cost of "regular" apartments without any food and activities much less weekly housekeeping and sheet cleaning plus free access to laundry for your clothes, the spacious studio apartment with kitchenette and bathroom and patio were spacious and a bargain. Without three meals a day and a van and driver to go to the store and on outings, I'm paying almost as much for a one bedroom in the same city without the services. Any individual staff member anywhere might not be responsive on a given day or instance, but as for me and my experience of the Atria over the past several years, I've felt that it was well maintained and a place I'd feel comfortable encouraging others to check out. read more

My mother's been at Atria since July and LOVES it....she swims an hour every day in the heated pool, enjoys the koi pond, and she loves the open menu dining from 7AM to 7PM every day. She orders a steak every week and they will even make her a milkshake! Atria WG published a book of residents' short stories and a book of residents' artwork. Everyone I've met is happy with the facilities and activities. No one here is bored or "warehoused" It is a real community. read more

We had to move my Dad into the Memory unit at Atria in Willow Glen last year. Though it was a challenging situation with his dementia progressing rapidly, Richard (the memory unit Director) was great in helping us make it a successful move. The staff were all so kind and caring, were understanding with my Dad as his condition deteriorated through the year, took great care of him and were supportive with My Mom and the rest of our family. They worked with the Hospice company we selected as that became necessary, and were truly caring as my Dad recently passed away. I have nothing but thanks and kind words for the staff , and am so appreciative of their hard work, sense of humor, and kindness through this very difficult time for my Dad and our whole family. We are so grateful at the care our Mom received at Atria Willow Glen in their Memory Care unit. They have a lovely shaded backyard area where they do a lot of the activities, and they play musicals every night for the residents. The staff is wonderful -- from the care attendants to the people who work in the office who help you get signed up and help you with the financial arrangements. Richard Olson, who is the director for the Memory Care unit in the Madrone Bldg, was so helpful to us when our Mom's condition worsened. He helped us get a hospice assessment, which was such a relief to our whole family. We wish we had started her care at Atria in the first place, but we're glad she was able to spend some time there. We highly recommend Atria Willow Glen for those looking for a nice environment and staff for their loved one. read more

Atria Willow Glen served as my parents home for about 3 years before my dad's recent passing. Their staff is courteous and friendly and seem to find a way to accommodate their residents' needs. The facility offers a wide variety of activities and hosts a heated swimming pool, pool table, ping pong and even a putting green for those with interest. Convenient shuttle service allows for weekly shopping or doctor outings and seasonal special events keep the environment from getting stale. My parents moved to Atria in the Independent Living unit about four years ago, my dad passing away two years ago and my mom remaining there until recently. I am writing this letter first to thank the staff at Atria for their caring and kind attention paid to my parents over the last four years. They helped to make the place a true community for them. The cafeteria was well-run and the food was generally quite good. (The cafeteria has some tables that look out onto the koi pond/Japanese garden - an attractive choice.) The waiters were always friendly. In the early years my parents enjoyed many of the outings provided. Later, after my dad passed away, my mother still enjoyed some of the drives. Her favorite activities involved music, and there was a lot of that. The music appreciation sessions on Sunday evenings were especially nice: I attended a couple of them myself. Maintenance was usually pretty good. If you are thinking of moving to Atria yourself or moving your loved one there it has one great plus over every (I mean it!) other facility I have seen: the grounds. These are lovely, expansive, and well-maintained. My mother, who, even now, loves to walk, was able to walk back and forth through these garden-like grounds three times a day for her meals. The koi pond mentioned above is very pretty and well-maintained. It is also nice that they have a pool, an unusual feature for a senior living center. The beauty of the grounds also meant that my mom always had a pleasant view from the small balcony of her second-floor apartment. In the summer she was able to sit out on the balcony and enjoy the breeze and watch the trees. Many of the more urban senior places lack this amenity. Another plus is that parking was never a problem for visitors. There is substantial parking on the street. I have only one complaint: we decided to use an outside care provider company to help my mom as she increasingly was unable to take care of herself. Many of the Independent living residents there do something similar. However, recently, Atria management has made this arrangement more difficult, banishing the outside care providers from public areas. On a couple occasions I was called by Atria because my mom was alone waiting to be taken back to her apartment, but part of the reason for this was that the care-taker was discouraged from looking in on her. Please, Atria, do a better job coordinating with outside company caretakers. However, this is a minor complaint, and we will always remember Atria Willow Glen with fondness. read more

I toured Atria and decided to apply my mother in their memory care section. I was told that their assessor would see my mother at our home to decide if she would be suitable for their facility. Antoine met with my mom at our home and reported to me and my father that she would be accepted. He said that, because of her depression and hostility towards my dad, he gave her a "50-50" of acclimating to Atria successfully. I then asked again if she was officially accepted. He looked me in the eye and said 'yes'. Three days later, we were told she would not be accepted and was not suitable. I spoke with Antoine and asked about his saying she was accepted and the 50-50 remark. He changed the story to the main directors a 50-50 chance of accepting her. I cannot tell you the problems this caused for me and my family. We were in desperate need of care for my mother and had relied on this place. After they pulled back, we luckily found a much better solution at Vintages Silver Creek. I'm thankful for that-but being lied to in this situation was unforgivable. Also, Vintage accepted my mom into the ASSISTED CARE section-not the Memory unit. That, alone, speaks for itself. We saved thousands and she is much happier in a private room. The so called assessment by Atria speaks for itself. They couldn't see admitting her to a memory unit yet another place admits her into assisted care with good results. Proceed with caution. read more

We moved my Mom here in 2012. She passed just short of living at the Atria for 5 years. Had we not moved her to this wonderful environment, I and my siblings are certain she would have died sooner. Atria provided mom with a wonderful community and staff. She was able to participate in the many activities Atria offers. From playing bridge to several of the resident outings mom had a good time. Atria provided mom a new purpose and a sense of belonging. I would highly recommend the Atria to anyone looking for a safe and caring community for their parents. Mom has frontal lobe dementia. Only took tour. Stand outs: the food, the dessert!! Yummy. Very nice neighborhood, location. Small, cozy. At WG location mostly independent seniors. Building is aging, they do keep it up, but elevator, windows have seen better days. If my. Mom were to live there.. Apartments are a decent size. Didn't like: carpet.. Everywhere. Rooms, okay, but common areas, library, looked worn down, dirty. Residents seemed to stay in rooms with their doors open for long peroids. Social areas didn't have residents other than the independent seniors. It was right before lunch, but people I saw in rooms were hanging out. My mom needs a little more hands on care than this place can offer. read more

This place is so gorgeous! I came by to help my uncle move in, and at first I was a little skeptical when my aunt said my uncle was coming here. BUT THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! There's a pool, a koi pond, a bus to take them out for activities and they have 5 star dinning!! Seriously?!! I wanna live here! And they have nurses on staff, that was pretty cool everyone's really nice! If you come in ask for Jett, he's so helpful and nice and you could tell he really cares about the residents. So far a great experience for my uncle which I'm truly happy about. read more

Atria is a beautiful senior retirement facility. My Father was here for a short time but really enjoyed his studio apartment, koi ponds, pool area, and the grounds. Staff were caring and willing to help at any time. The food was excellent. Residents are happy, comfortable, and secure. We visited quite often and always found the facility in very good shape and the meals outstanding. I had one rule when looking for a place for my Father and that is "would I stay there and be happy?" I would, and I plan to do so when it is my time to make this same decision. read more
