Now you might be surprised to see only 3 stars here, but let me explain... If I was judging by the donuts and pastries alone, it would be 5 stars all the way! But unfortunately the customer service during my last visit was not so good... I initially went to Brooklyn Baking company a couple weeks ago and, as it was my first time there, decided to try a bunch of different things... everything looked so delicious! I went with a couple Vanilla Funfetti Cupcakes, a Cherry Turnover, M&M Cookie, and a Glazed Donut. All were amazing! Especially the glazed donut, it was light and fluffy and delicious! It reminded me a lot of a Krispy Kreme donut. One of the best I've had in a while! When I was there, I saw that they serve breakfast sandwiches until noon (I had gone later in the day) and so I decided to go back this past weekend in the morning to get a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. When I got there it was fairly crowded, and I asked the female employee for a bacon, egg, and cheese on a hard roll. The employee told me that unfortunately they were out of bacon, but they had sausage if I wanted that instead. Even though I really wanted bacon, I told her that sausage was fine. While I was waiting in line to pay, the lady directly behind me also ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese from a different employee, and that employee did not say anything about them being out of bacon. Then, the man behind her ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese, from a third employee, who again did not say that they were out of bacon. Once I got to the register, I asked the employee (the one who had taken my order) if they were in fact out of bacon, because the two people behind me had just ordered it. She assured me that they were, and said that the other employees probably just hadn't gotten the word yet that they were out of it. I noticed that at no point did any employee tell the lady and man who ordered after me that there was no more bacon, and they were eventually both given their sandwiches. As the lady was leaving, I asked her if she had in fact gotten a bacon, egg, and cheese. She unwrapped her sandwich to check, and it had bacon on it! So I'm not sure why this female employee was so determined not to serve me bacon, it was very strange. I was disappointed that she didn't double-check with the kitchen staff before assuring me there was no more. The sausage, egg, and cheese was very good, though I was disappointed with the employee who took my order. Overall a good spot, but again just a disappointing experience. read more

When I went the 1st time I had gotten a cupcake and was not blown away. Then I started seeing this place listed whenever there was a "best donut" list. Decided to try again and got a honey glazed and an apple filled donut. Both were tasty, soft and high quality. Service was friendly. They still had a good selection at 2:30 on a Sunday. We took them to go but they did have some seating inside. read more

When my 8 year old son and I are both wide awake at 6:30 am on a weekend day, anything can happen. Today I asked, "Hey, you want to drive with me about 30 minutes to one of the best donut places and bakeries in the State?" "Yes." And . . . Off to Waterbury. Brooklyn Baking ("BB") has been on my CT Food Bucket list. It has 5 Stars on Yelp and I've seen it ranked as the best CT donut place (Neil's Donuts has something to say there) on one list and the best bakery on another list. It turns out that although it is in Waterbury and I live in the Hartford area, BB is about as convenient to Hartford as a Waterbury place could be. It's on the far east side of Waterbury. It's about a minute from the relevant Route 84 Exit (factoring in traffic lights) and about 10 minutes away once you pass Exit 32 (Southington). BB had fewer donut options than some donut places. When I first visit a place of BB's acclaim, I often ask the person helping me what I should get for my first visit. This morning, the friendly BB employee enthusiastically responded with choices that included: Maple Bacon, Old Fashioned and a Cream and Fruit Sauce Filled Pastry. My son and I split a cinnamon sugar Old Fashioned. It was fresh, soft, sweet and perfect. I also ordered the Maple Bacon. Again, super fresh and soft. The maple glaze was awesome and the bacon was crispy and salty. It destroyed a similar donut I recently ordered from another place, to such an extent, that the other donut now has bad dreams at night. BB has great donuts and service and is a legitimate rival of Neil's Donuts. You don't have to choose though because they have different styles and CT regions. A focus of BB seems to be super fresh and soft donuts. Many of Neil's donuts are a bit heavier and they seem to focus more on the contrasting texture between the inside and outside of the donut. BB also had bread, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. We stuck to donuts today, but since I know it's so close now. We'll be back. Pro Tip - If you're at the Waterbury Flagship Nardelli's, you're super close to BB. read more

I'm going to go against the grain with this review. It's an easy location to get to especially if you are near BJ's. I found this Waterbury "staple" bakery on Yelp. My dad never heard of it but all my family members did and raved how good their pastries are. From what I was told, go early because they sell out quick. So I made it around 11am and it's true! Some of the donuts I wanted to try was sold out but still there were plenty of other options. As I was looking in the display case, I had a few questions on what some pastries flavor were because they did not have any sign displaying the flavors. So I asked one of the young lady and she answered me very rude and with like a "duh" attitude. I was ready to go over the counter and slapped this little girl! My pre-Christian days flashed before my eyes and I snapped back at her and told her if you had signs out maybe I wouldn't have to ask.. duh!! Back to the pastries... it was ok. The glazed donut was very sweet but I love the fact it is yeast donut. The Creme puff was stale and the strawberry lemon cupcake was just a cupcake. The Oreo cookie was good though, but I wouldn't make a special trip for a cookie. Place is spacious to be able to sit and stay a while. Oh and I was surprise they sell pizza. I frequent Brooklyn Bakery often, they are tucked away in the corner of the Lombard Plaza on Reidville Dr. They have variety of delicious baked goods including cakes, cupcakes, pies, muffins, breads, breakfast sandwiches, and donuts. But What they are most known for and the reason I most often go, is for their DONUTS! These donuts are so delicious! Sometimes the line extends out the door--you know it's good if there is a wait. I've tried nearly all of their donuts, but my personal fav is the glaze; especially if you happen to be there when they have just been pulled out the fryer and glazed. Let me add my two cents to the 300+ reviews already present - stop what you are doing and just go there. It may be a non-descript store in a strip mall but that hides a gem of a bakery. This is family run operation is a bakery of old, solid confections, breads, and other delights. On the weekends, the line goes out the door. Don't worry, they have plenty of staff and it moves quickly. We enjoyed a dozen donuts. As you can see from the photo, we enjoyed a variety of jelly filled, cream filled, glazed and powdered donuts. These donuts were all excellent. One specific item to note - the chocolate topped was covered in real tasty chocolate icing that didn't slide off - plenty in each and every bite. After you've eaten donuts from Brooklyn Bakery, you will never stop at Dunkin or Tim Horton's again! read more

I know the photo is as basic as it gets but I almost forgot to take one all together since I couldn't wait to get this fluffy glazey goodness down my face hole.. and myyyy oh my was it amazing! My husband mentioned someone brought these to work and the donuts bring him back to childhood -- and that's the beauty of good snacks -- when it brings you back to a moment in time! In addition to the glaze goodness we had a Bavarian filled donut as a pre-glaze donut appetizer. Ive had many a donut in my day even going on a self funded "donut tour" a few years ago but PEOPLE, let me tell you the dough on these magical baked goods is unlike anything I've been had. The best eclairs I have had in a long time. They were cooked perfectly, generously filled with delicious pastry cream and the ganache on top was not too thick nor at all bitter! Also they were reasonably priced for a good sized portion. The last (newly reopened) bakery where I got an eclair, the pastry was over cooked, the filling was dry and skimpy and the ganache was bitter and too thick and they were about half the size at twice the cost! The food was solid and the Cinnamon sugar donut was my favorite. WOW. What an absolute gem in a random plaza in Waterbury, CT. As big donut fans, when my foodie friend Jason P. told me we had to stop at Brooklyn Baking when we were passing through Waterbury, I knew I had to listen. And boy, was he right. These were easily some of the best donuts we've ever had... and it was 1PM on. Saturday. They still had plenty left! We always order a classic glazed donut when we're trying a new donut shop. Absolutely incredible! Tasted like Krispy Kreme but 1000x better. Soft, sweet, and melts in your mouth. We also got a cinnamon sugar and a jelly but neither one of them topped that glazed. Easy access and parking! My son doesn't like cake so for his birthday I opted for donuts. I have been to Brooklyn baking before but it was later in the day so they were out of many items. This time around the bakery was stocked and I wanted to buy everything. But, I was focused on getting those birthday donuts so I didn't let myself distracted. So, this place took over another bagel/deli place I loved going to when I was in high school so I was a little salty at first that there was a new place in this location. I decided to check it out the last time I visited my hometown and I ended up going TWICE in a span of being there for 4 days!! First visit, I went for breakfast to get an egg and cheese sandwich. It's made on a Portuguese roll - if you know, you know. Holy cow -- delicious! And the egg was cooked fresh and it was very good! AND the best part - it was not at at expensive!! I asked about the cookies in the glass case - how much were they? 70cents a piece. What?!? So, I got two for later. I got a juice too which most places would charge you more than a gallon costs but not this place. Amazing food and low prices... music to my stomach ears. Only bummer about my first visit was they gave me one wrong cookie. I had gotten the one that had Oreos bits on top - uh yes please and my second ask was the m&m cookie. These cookies are by far my favorite kind so you can imagine my disappointment when I opened my bag and it was a peanut butter cookie instead. Anyway, I came back right before my flight to get TWO M&M cookies (can't mess it up) and a bag of Portuguese rolls. I can't find these anywhere but in CT. So good. Given the high reviews, I thought I was walking in for the best glazed donut ever. The glazed donut had that bad oil flavor -- the same hour of eating it-- not the day after, as often happens. It also was WAY too sweet. The jelly donut was better-- a very good jelly inside the donut. The donut part itself- just too oily. Banana bread was too dry. It's easy to make a moist banana bread, so not sure what happened there. Wasn't terrible tasting though. Very busy place. Nice service. I'd stick with the jelly, not the glazed. read more

The freshest rolls and bread! Everything I have had from here makes my eyes roll into the back of my head deliciousness!!!! The donuts are not fancy with crazy flavors and toppings like some other trendy places but they really nailed the varieties they have! They are out of this world! The cupcakes are also so delicious! I'm from SoCal, so these donuts are a bit different than what I'm used to back home, but oh em gee they're so soft and fluffy. A literal pillow! They only had a few options when I stopped by so I can only speak about their original glazed, powdered jelly filled, powdered lemon filled, cinnamon and sugar, and plain cake donut. Easily the BEST powdered jelly and powdered lemon donut I have ever had. So glad I go to school in New Haven so it's a bit of a drive just for donuts, otherwise I'd be there weekly. Just finished eating a plate of donuts....I don't eat donuts often, but when I do they have to be from Brooklyn Baking! Chocolate frosted is my must-have, followed by...every other kind! The thing that separates these donuts from all others is the light, melt-in-your mouth texture of the donut. You're not searching for the filling to relieve your tongue of the dense, gummy texture of another popular donut I won't name. Do not miss the bismarks, take home three and give one away.
