Oh, if only I could give 0 stars. We've wanted to like this place - it's right by where we live and it seems nice enough at first, but we're never going back, here's why: The counter staff have a complete inability to get your order right. We have to order everything separate and watch it, and even then you'll probably find something missing or wrong when you get home. Oh, also, you better check your coffee or tea when you get it, if the milk curdles when they pour it in, they'll just slap a lid on that thing and serve it to you. Speaking of that milk, it probably went bad because they just leave it open and hanging out on the counter all day. No ice, no bucket, no fridge. Just slowly turning into cheese as it sits there and flies zoom in and out of it. Yes flies... Don't worry, we'll come back to them. If you order "food" like eggs, that gets cooked in the basement, and slid through a hatch on the floor of the serving area until someone bends over to pick it up from among the rest of the crap they throw down there. Today, the friendly counter staff dropped something onto all those orders on the floor, threw up their hands in frustration, and then proceeded to pick all of the stuff off the floor and put it on the counter and serve eggs out of the doggy dishes they slide onto the floor in. Nice and sanitary. While you're waiting forever for your order and repeat yourself 8 times about coffee with milk 2 equal (you'll get sugar, no milk and not bother trying again), you get a chance to look around. When you look in at their pastries, you'll notice the flies buzzing around on them. Then, you look over by the coffee and see the flies. Then you look up at the menu - yup, that's crawling with flies. Then the bagels? Yup, you guessed it. It's so bad, and they're so used to it being bad, that it's like watching one of those commercials of starving children in Africa - they counter staff literally doesn't even notice anymore as the flies land all over their hair and faces. Disgusting isn't even the word. When you take a chance to look at the coffee machine which is the worst of the fly playgrounds, you'll notice that the bean hopper is basically a compost area. Various years of bean crud have built up on top of eachother enough that the lids don't even sit on top of the hopper anymore. Moving the machines to clean around and in them is clearly too big a hassle. Finally, you part with more than you should to just get out of there, because a queue of 10 people has built up as they fumble to deal with your "special order" of more than a biali. 13.50 or so later, you arrive home to find that "on a roll" meant "Just shove those eggs in a tinfoil dish". Maybe you're just being picky? Maybe you're being too hard on them? everyone has a bug problem here and there, maybe it's just a bad day, you think to yourself, trying to enjoy your breakfast. Then, after your first bite of bagel, that's when you notice the rat turd. Maybe it's a bit of chocolate or a burnt sesame seed? You squish it with your fork. Okay, no, yeah, that's not a sesame seed. You get it about an inch from your nose and that's when you throw the whole damn breakfast out. Good luck to all who eat here. The bagels here are by far the best in Brooklyn. If you are looking loafs of bread that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside than this is the place you should get your bread from. Very satisfied with the price and service. read more

I actually went to their satellite location in the subway station at 100 Henry (but I didn't see a yelp page for that one). I got the spicy tuna sandwich while on my lunch break. At first I was bummed by the $9.00 price tag, but now that I have completed my food, all I have to say is "Take my money". I am looking forward to trying some of the other options and I hope they stay around for a while since that spot seems a bit odd. read more

My wife and I have picked up breakfast sandwiches and bagels here several times since we moved to the area in April. The food and iced coffee is consistently mediocre. Not bad. But not great either. This might be a matter of personal preference, but they bake their own bread here and it has a somewhat different flavor than what I'm used to and the iced coffees are watery. If you haven't been there, I recommend trying giving it a try. It is a much-loved neighborhood standby. The service is generally good. And there's always a seat available inside, even if it does look a little cramped. read more

Terrible food. I've given it a try three times simply because it's so close to me, and each time I'm immensely disappointed. Their bagels are lumpy yet flat, super flour-heavy, dry and over-priced. Plus there's never a clear sign of just what kind of bagels they have behind the counter. Service isn't the best either. My advice: Spend your cash elsewhere. read more

I've been going here every weekend for about a year, but I'm getting tired of them screwing up my simple order. Mozzarella , vine tomato, and pesto on a roll is not that complicated and is, in fact, on the menu behind the counter. The cash-only rule would be less annoying if they got my order right. Their bread is excellent and their other ingredients are generally very good. It's the poor service that really hurts this place. read more

yummy, yummy sandwiches -- any of them, i don't care which one you order. even the breakfast sandwiches are particularly good, not your run of the mill egg-and-cheese. i also really like their french toast bagel. i don't think it actually qualifies as a bagel, but when you get it toasted with a little bit of butter... mmmm. as for the coffee, i found i preferred it at Le Petit Cafe, and would usually walk in the wrong direction to go to said alternative and then double back towards the subway. if not for my preference in coffee then i'd give this place 5 stars. read more

On a new years day my wife and i visited this neighborhood bread store and were greeted with a short tempered cashier who was working hard to kick us out so they could close up shop. We both ordered sandwiches before being rushed out the door and having it slammed and locked behind us. Brushing off the poor service experienced inside we walked to find a nice location to sit and enjoy our lunch in the unseasonably warm weather. We accomplished that but were rudely greeted by a bout of food poisoning some hours later. Overall, not a flattering experience. read more

this place has the best sandwiches and bread. i go at least once a week. capicolla with arugula and mozzerella with oil/vinigar is my favorite but the tuna is incredible too. honestly everything i've eaten here is great. i agree the bagels are more bread like than bagel like but the bread is great. cookies are good too. the coffee is fine but it's an afterthought. if you want a great coffee, go to gorilla. if you want a great sandwich or loaf of bread. go to brooklyn bread. delish! read more

Just amazing! Bagels and bread baked on the spot! So fresh.

I have a pet peeve. It's when bakeries misrepresent the type of bread they are selling. Bagels and baguettes are specific types of bread with unique tastes and textures. Brooklyn Bread Cafe doesn't seem to understand this: 1. Bagels - Had my first bagel from here over the weekend. It's not a bagel. It's a roll that is in a bagel shape. It tastes the same as their big square focaccia rolls (which are good enough to earn two stars). If you want a Bagel, go to Smith St. and buy one from the Bagel Cafe or Mocha Bagels. 2. Baguette - several times I've come here asking for a baguette, and they are sold out. One time, the cashier asked if I wanted some rolls instead because it was the "same thing." Nope. Not the same. I admit I haven't tasted their take on a baguette, but I finally saw one this weekend. It's a really long Italian loaf. It's something you would use to make a party sub. It's not a baguette. read more

i went in on 2/20/15 to order a #5 juice . coffee .hot chocolate - simple , I waited and saw no-one making a juice -hot drinks sat on the counter while I waited and asked about my juice - the manager ? was too busy counting tips too see what happened and told me that the juice made first, was ordered first - a flat out lie . No apology as I cancelled my juice ( no one was making it ) , I will never go back - learn what management is , teach the staff to appreciate customers , maybe this won't happen. read more

Ive been coming to this neighborhood cafe for about 5 years now, since I moved to NY from California. I must say that their sandwiches are second to none in NYC. I consider myself a food connoisseur and moved to NY to finish my degree in culinary foods. Ive tried gourmet sandwiches all over and I must say theirs take the cake. I think the fact that they bake their own rolls on premises has something to do with it. Or is it the unique, fresh, and tasty combination of their ingredients??.... whatever it is, they have mastered the formula for the ideal gourmet sandwich!!!! I was addicted to their tuna bella sandwich for about 2 yrs and put all my friends on to it. They used to make me buy it in the morning on my way to work! YES it is that good...italian genoa tuna, roasted peppers, balpease cheese spread, arugula, reduced homemade vinegar (little sweetness), oil on brick oven roll.....Since then I have moved on to their tutti frutti turkey which is turkey breast, swiss, cranberries, red grapes, arugula, mayo on their brick oven roll. The combination of the sweetness and the swiss melting on the warm turkey breast which they oven roast (I ask for it warmed up) is absolute orgasm to the mouth. I also enjoy their french toast brick oven bagel toasted with cream cheese on Sunday mornings. Their coffee used to be horrendous, but they have since switched to D'amico's which is a renowned roaster in downtown brooklyn...It's alot better but I still prefer Stumptown coffee. Also, the service leaves something to be desired, but I don't expect much due to limited work space and the tremendous lines they get for lunch time. I wait 15-20 minutes sometimes, but it's worth every second! Although, recently they've gotten alot more expeditious. Overall, based on the quality of the product I must give Brooklyn Bread 5 stars!!! read more
