I was invited out to eat with a friend, we arrived at eh restaurant at 8pm and placed orders for food and drinks at 8:15. I kid you not we did not receive our drinks until 8:40 pm and the food did not come out until 9:45 pm. I am sure it does not take an hour and 30 minutes to prepare jerk chicken with rice. The staff did not accommodate the inconvenience and said there was nothing they could do about it. I could not even enjoy the meal by the time it came out. There was no one checking in on us especially after grabbing the manager 2-3 times. I try my best to support small businesses but this is ridiculous, I will never go back to this location. read more

Hmm.. how many things can make me not want to return to a place... and Brooklyn Moon actually did it. I happen to try out this location with a group of friends on Saturday, and what a mistake it was. Waiter service was all right, but usually one can not get full on just drinking water along, need to nosh after an entire afternoon of walking around the steaming hot Coney Island Boardwalk. There is good conversation, it was the wait for the food and then when the food came, that sets off my rage. It took an hour after placing our order, for the food to come, and it was burnt. I ordered a Salmon Burger, and it brings to my mind a horrible experience of a Veggie Burger that I had. I couldn't even taste if the salmon was salmon really. The only thing I enjoyed about my meal was Plantain,, and it is pretty difficult to mess this up. . Then I overheard that an acquaintance had to ask for four different dishes for the restaurant to finally have it. What kinda restaurant is it to not have the food that is on their menu. Pretty bad. My other friend had a soft shell crab, shrimp salad.. and that salad was so salty, that she was like how much sodium can one get in a meal. I know how much a restaurant would slap an obligatory grattitude tip for parties over 6, and with our party being 9 people. There was a $22 waiter fee... and I was pretty annoyed with the service, but we ended up paying. So that's that. Came here last month on a whim. The bartenders were pleasant, drinks well balanced. However the food we ordered were absolutely dreadful. I ordered a Seawater, Jerk wings along with their mac and cheese. My sister ordered the seasoned fries. We couldn't believe how SALTY the food was. Accompanied by these dishes of what may have been marinated in sea water as well: this disturbing yet disappointingly familiar after taste of SEA-SONED SALT on EVERYTHING! Jesus Christ and all his disciples you can't put Lawry's original on every dish. It was sprinkled on the damn season fries, an added "garnish" on the mac and cheese, perhaps even combined in the jerk sauce that the wings were tossed in. I'm an avid cook, traveler, foodie... I know the taste of seasoned salt. The reviews prior to walking in were the deciding factor for me giving this restaurant a chance, however I guess if you enjoy deeply salted food in addition to a devotion to Seasoned salt, this is your spot. Now while I love this place, and make my way there as much as I can, here's a few things I should warn you about. Don't go to Brooklyn Moon if you are STARVING or very HUNGRY, they're short staffed, and your server is also the bartender who made your drink. If you're lucky, you'll go on a night where they have 2 servers. But once your food arrives, all is forgiven. The Honey BBQ wings, are finger lick'n good, Crab Cakes are seasoned just right and the curry-potatoes one of their signature sides are excellent. Place is small enough to feel intimate but large enough to accommodate a bigger party. Entrees are affordable from $10 to $14 and come with two sides. We ordered the jerk chicken, fried chicken and fried whiting and shared the collard greens, mac n cheese, spicy fries. Why is it that whenever I'm in there only one person is manning the bar and tables? I don't get it. Either way, the $5 Anti-Bush menu is difficult to pass up. I've had better experiences at restaurants. I would have given two stars, but I'm adding an extra star for the decor and the service (both were good). The food tho? Not bad but not really good. I had the grilled salmon, which was as good as salmon can be without much seasoning, but needed some hot sauce to be OK. As for the roasted veggies - my fiance wondered out loud whether they were actually vegetables! LOL. They were indeed vegetables but we could not tell just by looking at them; they appeared to be a grouping of pieces of brown. If I can't tell the difference between the assortment of vegetables unless they're in my mouth, that's a problem - they were extremely over-seasoned! My fiance had the jerk chicken. He expected more for $13.95. I tried a little piece, and it had good jerk flavor but too much salt. They got the plantains right. Those were good, but I'm not gonna go to any restaurant for the fried plantains (in my world, a basic run of the mill kind of dish). Additionally, we were seated at a small round table in the middle of the restaurant which seemed fine for just us two, but the table was too small for our plates! We had to move the salt and pepper shakers out of the way for room enough for half the plates. I had to move away from the table just so the plate wouldn't be in my lap. I went here for the first time last night with a friend. Wasn't too crowded for a Friday night that was a big plus. Also happened to be an all night happy hr special so that was definitely a win! My last experience here was MUCH better. I arrived on a random Tues late night and the place was empty. Cha ching! It didn't stay empty for very long but at least we were able to put in our orders ahead of everyone else. Wait time = less than 15 min!!!! And, service was perfect. Instead of ordering starters, I ordered the Vege platter (choice of 3 sides) - Apple Salad, Mac & Cheese, and Roasted Vegetables. All delicious and all devoured. The restaurant was out of the Big Fish that day which made me really upset. But, I settled on the Lobster Pancake and my companion ordered the Jerk Chicken. Both entrees were huge and delicious. On a hot, sunny day, Brooklyn Moon really makes you "sweat" while you wait for the food and while you eat, because there is no air conditioning in the restaurant. That really is the main reason why I am not giving this restaurant the extra star. There are little things that I also did not like which was that the service was a bit slow in the beginning and that the menu was a little dirty. The food did take a bit longer than usual to arrive. The dishes were also a bit pricey. However, the food really made you forget about the negatives. For starters, we had ordered the honey BBQ and jerk chicken wings as well as the spicy shrimp. They were all delicious but the best was the jerk chicken. Be careful, the jerk chicken is pretty spicy. Don't worry, there is big, glass, clear wine bottle filled with cold water for you to cool down your tongue as well as your sweaty self. Next, I had the grilled salmon with the apple salad. The salmon was grilled just the way I always wanted it to be eaten. Crispy on the outside and cook on the inside. The apple salad was delicious. The dressing was light, so it did not overpower the dish. I really wished I had more of the salad. Next time, I will order extra apple salad. I also wished I ordered the spicy fries, but I was trying to be healthy. However, when one of my colleagues offered her fries, I could not resist them. They were so crispy and the spice was not too hot. It was enough that you could at least enjoy the fries. I would definitely come back to Brooklyn Moon Cafe, but in the winter, where it is not so hot to eat a hot meal. I also hope they changed their menu with cleaner sheets. "Good service" isn't being a chucklehead that jokes about why your appetizers hasn't been coming the last hour and a half, or pretending to give a damn when asking about a watered down drink you took an hour to bring, and then taking a half hour to bring an alcoholic beverage that you don't even have to make. I love the food I've sampled at Brooklyn Moon. My favorite dishes are the brooklyn crab cakes, roasted vegetables, collard greens and the fish. My boyfriend had the curried mussels and said they looked more impressive than they tasted. The price is right (compared to other restaurants in the area), the food is hearty and the portion size is generous. That being said, the service can be pretty bad here. I have only ever been here with one other person and our party of two have had to wait for eons before being acknowledged and then light years before actually getting our food. Also, I think they are supposed to seat you but no one is ever really there to greet us when we've ventured in, so we've always just seated ourselves. They seem a little short staffed on the front and back of the house but then I eat my crab cakes and decide the wait and little annoyance is worth it. If you come on a weekend night when it's crowded you will be sitting on top of someone else because the tables are very close together. Also, it can get pretty darn loud depending on the people at the bar or at the surrounding tables. Some people just have trouble using their inside voice, so what are you gonna do... read more

The Lobster Pattie I had which wasn't a lobster at all but wonderfully seasoned Talapia on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes with a bit of lobster cooked into the potatoes. A year ago I would have given this 4 stars, but I dined there recently and the experience left much to be desired. The food was great and large portions are served, my issue with this place from the first time I have been there is their small menu. A lot of there dishes are shell fish which I am allergic to so this limits me to a handful of menu options. In addition, the service is pretty lame and inconsistent. Good luck having someone refill your water or ask you if you need a second drink when you finish your first. Another issue is the ambiance. I don't know what they did with the lighting but it's bad. They have two track lights that are on the wall and not only flood the place with an unattractive light, but are also blinding. I remember when it was a nice dark and sexy place, but not anymore. The drinks are ok and there are quite a few other places to check out and visit so the location is good as well.' Oh yea, another vibe killer was when a uniform cop entered to order some take out, which I didn't know they did. This would have been a 5 star Review but the first time I came here I ordered the Blackened Tilapia and it was phenomenal but... I had to wait an hour and a half for it to come because the waitress/ bartender forgot tell me that they were out of fish at the moment and waiting for more. Thankfully my friends were really patient and person in charge gave us complimentary drinks while we were dining. The customer service here is great and the food is so yummy. I just wish hey would do something about those teeny tiny round tables and get some proper air conditioning for the hot Brooklyn Summers but I'm happy to have another Soul food alternative now that Night at the Cookers seems to be closed. I went to Brooklyn Moon for the first time for my birthday at 7pm, December 8, 2011 and I had an amazing time. The ambiance was quirky-cool, reminded me of a restaurant I went to in Aruba - very low-key, low lighting, intimate, simple and cool. We didn't have reservations, our table started with my best friend and I. We had appetizers, but I can't remember what they were (lol). I do remember I had the Big Fish, which was soooo good - fresh, flavorful and hot (I like my food damn-near scalding and this was good). My best friend had the fried chicken and she liked it too, I'm touch and go with fried chicken, but I still found it to be tasty. She ordered the infamous Saltwater drink and I WISH I did too, it was soooo good - even had swedish fish at the bottom! Later on my boyfriend and 3 other friends arrived and the waitress was really accommodating to our ever-expanding table. Everyone loved their dishes. What made my evening EXCEPTIONAL at Brooklyn Moon, was after my friends told the owner it was my birthday, they talked him into making me a desert - they DO NOT have a desert menu at Brooklyn Moon. The owner went out and BOUGHT the ingredients for the yummiest Bananas Foster I've ever had - I mean, how sweet and thoughtful was that, just above and beyond!!! He, the waitress and a few other folks came out and sang happy birthday to me, which brought tears to my eyes. We sat down as soon as we arrived which was great and rarely happens in NY. We ordered our food and drinks no more than 5 minutes argue we sat down. The food took over an hour. In that time they took long to bring the 3rd drink i ordered, they didn't bother to say sorry or give any kind of apology for he long wait. My water glass was empty for at least 30 minutes. I had to ask the hostess for more water and when she came she didn't say anything until I asked where the food was (kindly of course) and then she said they just got a second chef so she'll Cheick in our our order. I watched her go to the back, talk to someone for 2 minutes then walk out with our food. The waffles were cold and the chicken was hot. It was as if they ran out of ch down and just got someone 5 minutes before I asked about our order. After finally finishing our food, they still took about 10 minutes after we finished to only be asked for our check. The woman took only one card off the table and told me I could add tip "here" (even though their establishment includes tip). I asked for everything to be split so she had to cancel the entire transaction then charge us again. My bank no longer recognized the business and didn't accept the charges.
