A friend and I came here for dinner and it was decent. Upon arrival we were seated. We were not offered water or any sort of beverage while we mulled over the menu. After 15-20 minutes I hauled down a bus boy who brought us beverages asap. We ordered food. And the wait wasn't too bad. The food was Delish. I had the spicy shrimp with rice and peas. I really enjoyed the few starters we got here but I agree with the 3.5 star rating because service was a bit off. My party of 4 showed up close to 10 on a rainy Thursday evening and with plenty of tables to spare, the hostess/whoever greeted us was nervous about giving us a table because we only planned on getting drinks. She ultimately gave us the table but told us we'd have to move if it got busy. Seeing as how it was raining and they were closing up at 10:30, I don't think there was any need for that. Once we sat down, our appetites got the better of us so we ordered food as well---jerk chicken wings and spicy fries to be exact. The wings, 7 per order, were cooked perfectly and well spiced, and the meat was melt-of-the-bone tender. The fries, which were more spiced than spicy, were addicting thanks to whatever spices they were coated in and their accompanying Caribbean ketchup. It was also a pretty sizable plate of fries. In terms of drinks, I ordered the Red Rum. It was tasty but small. The denser mango nectar sits on the bottom of the cup and doesn't mix well so I kinda sipped the rum/red wine and mango in a silly up and down motion. Took my mom here since we were out and about. Brunch was very good. I love the look and feel of this place. You can't go with their fish or chicken. We sat down as soon as we arrived which was great and rarely happens in NY. We ordered our food and drinks no more than 5 minutes argue we sat down. The food took over an hour. In that time they took long to bring the 3rd drink i ordered, they didn't bother to say sorry or give any kind of apology for he long wait. My water glass was empty for at least 30 minutes. I had to ask the hostess for more water and when she came she didn't say anything until I asked where the food was (kindly of course) and then she said they just got a second chef so she'll Cheick in our our order. I watched her go to the back, talk to someone for 2 minutes then walk out with our food. The waffles were cold and the chicken was hot. It was as if they ran out of ch down and just got someone 5 minutes before I asked about our order. After finally finishing our food, they still took about 10 minutes after we finished to only be asked for our check. The woman took only one card off the table and told me I could add tip "here" (even though their establishment includes tip). I asked for everything to be split so she had to cancel the entire transaction then charge us again. My bank no longer recognized the business and didn't accept the charges. The jerk chicken is spicy and flavorful and everything jerk chicken should be (I think - I'm from Texas, I should admit), the salmon burger is satisfying and delicious, their fries are seasoned to perfection, and their portions are generous. As for service, the guy who's usually there isn't amazingly attentive, but I don't really have any complaints. We should have photographed the roach. Would that have been wrong? As another Yelper stated "once a favorite...will no longer be in rotation". The whole space/atmosphere is sloppy. It's no longer a vibe. My friend came a couple of weeks ago and shared her displeasure with a waitress who appeared to have a very hard to look at (but hypervisible) rash" around her mouth. She wondered to me why a restaurant would allow an employee in food service to be taking orders and greeting customers. I empathized for the server and my friend. Let me start from the beginning. We returned only because there are so few options with the music and culture vibe that was once "So Brooklyn" in proximity to our job. We arrive and get seated. A server takes our drink order. We both ordered happy hour margaritas; friend's with a salted rim, mine no salt. Shortly thereafter a waitress arrives at the table and as she's greeting us she coughs on us; open mouth, no face in arm, nothing. My instincts and reflexes caused me to immediately attempt to block her unacceptable spread of germs with my menu. As I looked at her in disbelief I saw the redness and inflammation around her mouth. Omg. I didn't want to order a thing. But my friend was HONGRY and put in an order for calamari. The calamari has lost its distinct and delicious seasoning, flavor, and portion size. They were just fried squid rings of salt. My friend continued to order her meal despite it all. Our drinks arrived and were brought out by the waitress who just looked overall unkept and unhealthy. Friend's drink did not have salt on the rim as she requested and she sent it back, which I thought was risky, considering. It took me forever to take a sip and when I did. What a waste; tasted like margarita flavored dishwater. I was disgusted and had been disgusted. I was done. Everything was nasty and felt dirty. Friend's food arrived. Since I wasn't eating or drinking I guess my peripheral vision allowed me to catch the movement behind friend's head. That's when I saw it. The roach. Moving rapidly up the painting. I quickly moved our bags from the wall into a chair and called the hostess over. She looked up, saw the roach and left. She came back out with a male from the kitchen. They both stared as the roach made his way down the painting. That's when the hostess pounced and ended him. We waited for the "we're sorry what can we do..." instead she turned to us and proudly declared "got him". The male from the back just looked at us like "what". We asked to speak to manager. He offered a weak apology and said its hard to keep the roaches out since the windows are open He took off her meal and charged us for the drinks and calamari. We asked if he would treat us the same if we were tourists from Switzerland (or Oregon). He looked Blank. He sent the waitress back over. If it weren't for the hostess, Lanience I would completely roast this place. Shaniece the waitress, is extremely rude and over the top because she wanted to close out while I was still eating. She made me feel like I shouldn't of been there because she wanted to go home. i absolutely LOVE Brooklyn Moon. i come here at least once a year. if i lived in Brooklyn or lived closer, i'd be here like once a week. it's a verrrry small restaurant with about 5 tables against the wall, a bar against the other wall and 2 of the small bar stool tables in the middle. they've changed up their look a few times in the past 4 years that I've been there and it keeps getting better. a big plus is that the bathroom is suuuper clean. now on to the food... i'm west indian so they'res nothing like authentic Caribbean home cooking. i am very picky about what Caribbean restaurants to go to so saying that i love Brooklyn Moon says a lot. the prices are beyond affordable. i went there last night for dinner with a friend and our bill total was $40. Food is cheap but alcoholic drinks are your average NYC prices. i absolutely LOVE their curry potatoes, fried plantains, crab cakes, mac n cheese and jerk chicken. keep in mind that they don't have a large menu. the customer service has gotten a lot better over the years (it was never bad to begin with). the location is great because it's a couple blocks away from the atlantic ave station/barclays center. as long as this place stays in business, i'll always be a loyal customer. read more

Brooklyn moon never disappoints! The food is always delicious and the drinks are always on point. Stopped in for a quick bite to eat during lunch and decided to try something new on the menu, the shrimp ceaser salad. Amazing!!! Had a little kick to it but not too hot. The bartender is always nice and polite and he holds a conversation with everyone who sits at the bar without being distracted and unable to help other patrons. Nothing bad to say... The food here is fine and the old fort Greene vibe is great in here but they have serious issues with how long things take. I'd ordered take out and they told me when it'd be ready, over half an hour afterwards they were still making excuses and didn't offer anything while I waited. Finally I asked if I could sit and they put me at a table that hadn't been bussed the whole time I was there. There were plenty of people working but no one seemed to be getting anything done. People have tried to forgive his egregious behavior because the food is good, but anyone spewing the verbal poison that he does, it has to spill over to the food. No thanks. He was walking in front of us and there was another group waiting by the entrance. He started cursing at them because they were blocking his way. We waited forever for our food to come out. Only one person ordered an appetizer (the calamari is a must try with the spicy dipping sauce) and that also took forever to be brought out to our table. We were terribly hungry. When we finished our meal, we must of ask the waitress for our check 3 times within a half hr of being done eating. We were ready dip out without paying since they were not concern about giving us our bill. We had to repeatedly ask for things. Now the Food Part: I ordered the BBQ chicken with mac &cheese and roasted vegetables. Also what I love about this place is that the meals comes with 2 sides! Unlike the restaurant Nights of the Cookers which only gives you 1 side with your meal. Ugh the nerve of them! Fast forward to today the place looks tore down the high back both was falling apart. The back of the seat had torne fabric. Next the food we got the fish can you say taste like a cardboard box. I would give this place zero stars if possible. Horrible service and even more horrible food. The crab cakes tasted like can tuna balled up that was microwaved served over a bed of grass that was found in a crack from the streets of New York when street cleaners were out of service for a week Also got a Caesar salad that was absolutely inedible. Not sure how you can ruin a plate of leaves? Guess cover it in plantains and hot sauce and leave half of the items listed on the menu off of the salad. Luckily I had 20 minutes from the time they took my untouched plates of food to wait for the waitress to possibly start to considering bringing me my check to write this. Anyway, the bf ordered a rum punch, which was also very good (basically the fruit punch with some rum). For starters we had calamari and spicy shrimp. Both were cooked perfectly and not chewy at all. The spicy shrimp was indeed spicy and kind of reminded me of my mother's shrimp curry. We also shared mac n cheese, and candied yams. They yams were a bit mushy for me, but I enjoyed the mac n cheese. Just cheesy enough for me. I had the curried mussels with curried potatoes, and rice n peas. The mussels were excellent and HUGE. Also, they were green lipped mussels, which I had never had before, so that was kind of interesting. One thing I did not like was that the other part of the shell of the mussel was removed. I didn't like this because then I just had to trust the restaurant that the mussel had opened on its own. I am kind of paranoid about this because I definitely have had some dead mussels at various restaurants around BK. Anyway, I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Everything was fine in the end. The curried potatoes (which I chose based on someone else's review) were too salty for me. I enjoyed the rice n peas with the tomato style sauce on top. My bf seemed to like his food, butI can't comment much about that since he doesnt say too much about food. So that's the food. Onto the rest.. The place kind of a a deep fried smell about it. i was not really into that, or the decor of the place. There are these dingy looking purple curtains along one wall that are covering god only know what sort of ugliness behind it. But anyway, its not that much of an eyesore, I just wish this place had more of a clean and fresh look about it. Easily identified amongst the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by the warmest smiles and the plant life surrounding the outside gave me a feel of authenticity in the palette adventure that was about to take place. There are about 6 different champagne and juice combinations offered at $1.00 a piece.....even better than bottomless prices at most places, you would agree I am sure. Let me say that I am absolutely in love with the soft shell crab, shrimp salad. It's soooo good. I get it with the dressing and the cheese on the side, because if you add to much it can be very salty. I love this dish, because it's savory, sweet and crunchy. It has sweet plantains, soft shell crab as well as shrimp, and the Cesar salad dressing is one of the bests I ever had. I recently visited on a busy Saturday night, and I think that my salad could have been better, because the greens were a little puny and wilted, but the flavor was on point! I actually like the ambiance, dim lighting and fabric draping at the door. The service could be better at times, but I am usually engaged in deep conversations and I know how to get the server's attention when I need to. I have recently seen a couple argue with a bar attendant who forgot to bring a drink and who may have accidentally forgot to place a food order. ~They need to hire more folks for the weekends. Overall, I will continue to frequent the place, because I love the food. And the honey bbq wings are excellent! read more

I ordered the spicy shrimp with yams and it was the best spicy shrimp I have had in a long while because it was actually really spicy, which I LOVE. The yams provided the perfect balance to cool down my taste buds from the heat of the spicy shrimp, and their sweetness was just right. Went the other day for lunch..it was good..really cant complain...I ordered off the $5 special menu..which is a choice of an entree and a side. I had the turkey burger and fries and I also ordered the apple salad. Turkey burger was really good...juicy, nicely seasoned...came with a slice of a beefsteak tomato and greens!! The bun was a little low budget...kinda reminded me of the buns they would serve sloppy joes on in the grade school cafeteria Fries - I will pass on this the next time...also reminded me on fries from grade school cafeteria Apple Salad...GREAT...I truly enjoyed it...the serving size was huge!! The service was not good..but not horrible...it was just there!!! The waitresses are very personable and they went above and beyond in answering my questions. I loved my first trip to the Brooklyn Moon from start to finish, and I'll definitely be going back time and time again. The cafe is dimly lit, with antiqued decor - lots of old lamps and drapes in a small, yet cozy, space. Our dining music was old school culture reggae coming from behind the bar. The waiter (who also doubled as the bartender on a slow Wednesday night) was friendly and courteous. He made me the best apple martini I've ever had! It was poured over thinly sliced strips of green apples (which was v. cool), and was strong, yet sweet and flavorful. I ordered the fried chicken breast, which came with two sides for $9.75. The chicken breast was off the hook! I was served a huge piece of chicken with heaping potions of mac & cheese and spicy fries. I usually don't like white meat, but it was extremely juicy, and not one bit greasy. It was extremely well seasoned - I knew from first sniff that it would taste fabulous. I tend to kill restaurant food with black pepper because I find it not to be flavorful enough, but that was not the case here! And it came with a bottle of Caribbean hot sauce! The mac & cheese was good, though it could have used more cheese, and the spicy fries were seasoned, but not hot or peppery (again, not greasy, either). My friend had the three cheese ravioli, which was ok (and inexpensive... $3.95), but I'm not a ravioli person. The bathroom was very clean, just like all of our eating utensils, plates, and glasses. The food, atmosphere, pricing, and cleanliness were all up to my standards. Overall, it was a great dining experience. Closed Mondays. Happy Hour from 4 to 8, Tuesday-Friday. Update: Forget about the chicken breast... don't sleep on the burgers on the anti-Bush menu, the curry potatoes, or the jerk wings (which are better than the jerk chicken for some mysterious reason).
