It has the kind of cozy neighborhood vibe that makes you want to relax and savor your meal. Our server, Annie S., was fantastic--friendly, attentive, and very easy to talk to. Her service struck the perfect balance and truly enhanced our experience. We shared the Sailor Gin Martini, which was beautifully chilled, bright, aromatic, and finished with a lovely dry note. It was refreshing and absolutely delicious. For our appetizer, we shared the quiche. It was so good that we completely forgot to take a photo before finishing it! For our entrées, I ordered the cod and my husband had the burger without the bun. The cod was honestly one of the best I've ever had--perfectly cooked, incredibly fresh, and full of flavor. The pea purée that accompanied it was equally delicious and complemented the fish beautifully. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his burger, and I couldn't resist helping myself to some of his fries, which were excellent as well. I was so excited to come back here with out of town guests. The food was still incredible, but this time the service was incredibly disappointing. We ordered two appetizers with distinctive sauces, and when our plates weren't cleared after the first course, we made what I thought was a very reasonable request for fresh plates. That simple request seemed to send our server over the edge. At a restaurant of this caliber, I would expect fresh plates and silverware to be brought automatically between courses. Instead, the staff insisted that we keep using the same silverware throughout the meal. Later in the evening, I sat with an empty cocktail glass for quite a while. I tried making eye contact with our server, who appeared to avoid our table by turning her back and refusing to look over. I suspect she noticed me in her peripheral vision because she abruptly said, "I'll be with you in just a moment." I wasn't waving her down or trying to interrupt her. I simply wanted a wine list, which could have been dropped off in seconds for me to browse while she continued helping other tables. Instead, after I asked, she prioritized several other tasks before eventually bringing it over. At one point, my friends joked that "the food is great in Brooklyn, but the service is rude." That honestly made me sad to hear because it doesn't reflect the Brooklyn I've known over the past 14 years. I've always found it to be warm and welcoming. I'm not sure what happened to Sailor, but this experience couldn't have been more different from my first visit, as reflected in my previous review. Before dismissing this as someone being overly critical, it's worth noting that I worked in the service industry for 17 years. I know restaurants get busy, and I don't expect perfection. Beautiful restaurant nestled in Fort Greene, it makes for a cute spot to grab a drink with friends, with a $9 house white/red (Riesling this time for white) offered. Had a welcoming and upbeat server, but the service was general slower and not rushed, 2.5hr for our meal. I was excited as the dishes sounded unique and promising but a lot of them fell short: The egg tonnato didn't have much flavor, the herb oil only adding a slightly grassy taste. I was excited for the hiramasa crudo, but it was bland and one note, even the mild pomelo overpowered the fish because of how little flavor. Fried anchovies were tasty and paired well with sage but the portion is so small for the price. What went well: sea bass was very well cooked, very soft, flaky, well flavored. Was under salted but I could add that myself. The pork was also well cooked, tender, generous portion of meat that paired well with the cherry. We finished off with the burnt caramel tart, which had a good flavor although the texture was on the softer side. I don't think the creme fraise really complemented it, but still tasty. Ended up stopping by sailor on a little solo date because I decided to treat myself! Had a reservation at the bar and the bartender was exceptionally attentive. I immediately placed my order and she offered drink options. That would pair very well. I started with the Caesar salad. It was very creamy crunchy and fresh 10/10. Next, I got the Branzino. It was way bigger than I expected. Came with a lot of vegetables, but I wish for the price there wasn't accompanying side. It was more than filling indefinitely, packed up half of it to go. I opted to get dessert as well, which was also a nice small sweet treat to wrap up my night. The only thing that's holding it back from me making it. A five star review is the temperature. Solid neighborhood brunch spot with fun vibes and a stellar french toast. However, it falls a little short of all the hype based on service + the other dishes we tried. Made a reservation for Saturday brunch with a friend and was instantly charmed upon arrival. I love the layout of the restaurant with the bistro tables facing inward-- it really feels like they are making the best use of the space. For food, my friend and I opted to share the french toast and the burger. The french toast was delicious, although dare I say the slab of butter they put on the top is a little too thick and too cold, so it's hard to get it to properly melt. The burger was good but nothing spectacular and I think they could have a much better bun. However, the fries were delicious! I got a flat white and my friend got a grapefruit juice. For the price, the sizes of the drinks fell flat, and my flat white was also too much like a cappuccino. Had a date night here on a weekday recently. No reservations, just walked in and asked for a bar spot. Waited about 20 minutes next door and got a text that our table was ready. Great-looking menu, ended up getting the Caesar salad, stuffed radicchio, and chicken to share. Everything was top-notch. The Caesar was one of the best I've had, and the stuffed radicchio was on another level. Didn't expect it to be as good as it was. The wine reduction was really special. The chicken was the star of the show. I'm one of those people who never order chicken out because I can make it at home, but this was just on another tier. I couldn't, on my best day, cook chicken this well. Couldn't recommend enough. The staff was super helpful and friendly without being overbearing sitting at the bar. And some of it had a bit of a charred flavor I didn't love - Turkey Rueben: the turkey and filling of the sandwich was very good but the bread was burnt on the crust so that part didn't taste great. I had no clue Sailor was open for lunch until I was searching for a lunch place on open table. We were able to get an 1130AM reservation. The restaurant was not busy with a few patrons. The restaurant was thoughtfully decked out with paintings, symbols consistent with sailing vibes. We started off with complimentary olives. I got the house white which was a sauvignon blanc for only 9 dollars. We ordered the deviled eggs followed by the smoked haddock soup. The haddock soup had large pieces of smoked haddock. It wasn't as creamy as a chowder, but that was a plus. We shared the burger and fries which came with mayo, mustard and ketchup and got the chicken. The chicken was so flavorful and so moist. If only all chicken came this moist. It retained its moisture even when we had it for leftovers a few days later. We ended the gluttonous lunch with theirs signature ginger cake with a cream on top. As someone who has eaten a lot of baked goods in the City, I was not super impressed with the cake. I would definitely skip it next time. read more

Back in Brooklyn! I cannot seem to stay away from New York. I guess it's in my bones. Landing at LaGuardia Airport this morning and a quick Uber ride to my son's Condo in Brooklyn we all wanted lunch - Now! Instead of the usual "Same Ole Same Ole" repetitive restaurants, my wife chose Sailors. A ten minute walk and viola, we were seated, ordered up and ready to go. I had a simply wonderful Caesar Salads that I think I might put it my top five (in the hundreds I've had). I also had Deviled Eggs that were creamy, scrumptious and quite pretty. I did order a something I've never had before - A Miller High Life beer pony style; meaning a bottle of beer the size of my fist. I really liked the size as I didn't have time for a nap. My wife had the lunch Bass with lentils and Swiss chard and came with a creamy horseradish sauce. She loved this dish. The service was stellar, the ambience was causal classy. The food was awesome and the wait staff were very helpful in recommending dishes and which items would go well with each other. All dishes were equally as fabulous, but if I had to pass on one it'd be the green salad as it was simple leaves with a vinaigrette + pumpkin seeds. Chickpea hummus was drizzled with a jalapeño oil that wasn't spicy but offered a great flavor. The artichoke was very tart and refreshing. It had a heavy acidity to it. The atmosphere here is fantastic and so beautiful. I really like the nautical accents alongside the wall and the bar area is also really cool. I felt like I was in a ship and they have a really nice seasonal pumpkin display outside. Onto the food, I came here for brunch, so can't speak to their normal menu, but my friend got the Turkish eggs, and I got the croque monsieur. While my portion size was decent, I felt like my friends plate was really really small for the price. I'm not sure she was full after the meal. My sandwich turned out to be so much food and cheese that I had trouble finishing it because it was loaded up with a lot of cheese. I thought this was delicious and my only minor complaint is that it was a little bit too acidic. There is a healthy slathering of Dijon mustard, and that paired with the pickles was a little bit overpowering. Struggled on writing the review because I wasn't sure what star rating to give it so I'll break everything down below. Restaurant itself is beautiful love all the nautical items. We arrived early before our reservation so they told us we could grab a drink in the corner of the bar. Drinks were great, but that area definitely got packed as people were waiting for their table and there were only approximately six seats in that corner. Food wise, we ordered what I would describe as a deviled egg. My husband thought they were decent deviled eggs, but nothing special. We also ordered the sunchokes which I had never heard of before, but we're really good. Highly recommend. And then for entrées I ordered the chicken which was incredible. Highly recommend probably the best chicken I've ever had and I don't normally order chicken in a restaurant. To be honest, I can't remember the second dish we ordered that's how underwhelming it was. The area that gave me pause on review was the service from our waitress. I don't know if it was just a bad night for her or if that is normally how she handles her tables, but she seemed to have zero interest in any of our tables. We watched the other servers explain the menu and be excited and make recommendations but our server was truly just an order taker. We were in line on a Sunday, 20 minutes before they opened and we were lucky enough to get a seat for two at the bar. They check all the boxes here: * Great music * Fantastic service * Cozy vibes * Incredible food I was undecided which dish I was going with for brunch and asked our server what she'd recommend out of the two I had narrowed down. With confidence, she recommended the Turkish Eggs & Flatbread. When I tell you the flavors of this dish had me going crazy... wow, wow, wow! This is a must order - there's absolutely no question about it. So good, I've added this dish to my "best dishes of 2025 list". I'll be curious to see where it falls on the list by the time the end of the year is here but confident it will make the top 5, if not, top 3. In addition to that we asked our server for appetizer recommendations and he said that he's only been there for 2 weeks and didn't know what to tell us. The restaurant is on a corner, dimly lit, beautiful artwork on the walls, great playlist vibes and an amazingly talented staff (I'll talk more about them later). Oh ma gawd. I was dipping the cod in the chicken sauce too it was that good. Oh thankfully saved space for dessert and completely devoured the Profiterole (first time trying this). Two delicious puff pastry / vanilla ice cream / caramel glazed pieces landed on the table. Holy cow Sailor has the best french toast I've ever tasted! The texture was melt-in-the-mouth, with a seared outside that was perfection. The sauce was indulgent and blended well with the fluffy insides of the pancake. The burger was also super solid -- not too heavy and cooked just right (true medium rare). We went to this restaurant twice recently in New York. The first time was before dinner and sat in the warm great weather in New York outside and had a wonderful time. The Caesar salad was great. The fish entrée was also great. We got confused getting there the first time. The second time we took the C train from the Times Square area. We had been to April Bloomfield, previous restaurants, including the John Dory oyster bar and the spotted pig in the West village. There was a scandal there involving Mario Batali, and others that tarnish April for having a blind eye. All of her restaurants closed. Sailor is her redemption and is greatly welcomed by the fans of her cooking. I have two of her cookbooks. The wait staff is exceedingly nice. read more

Croutons were good and dressing was flavorful. Had a nice tang to it. -French Toast: I feel like this is a must. It's not very big, but it was perfect to share. Not sure I'd want as my sole entree. Texture is similar to a soufflé. Despite what it looks like, it wasn't overly sweet. -Sailor Burger: slightly undercooked for me. We asked for medium and it was medium rare. This place was insanely good. I think we got lucky, brunching in Fort Green on a cold & rainy Saturday, because we only had to wait about 10 minutes for bar seats. Super cute place with a nautical theme and great service. They also had the best burger I've ever had, with smothered onions & cheese. The French Toast was rich and served with a sweet and delicious caramel sauce. read more
