The front of Island Shack from the small triangular park
    Edmond C.

Island Shack has to be understood in context to appreciate what's going on here. Let me get the bad news out first. Service is slow. It appears the husband is manning the bar, while taking orders, serving, and busing the table at the front of the restaurant. The wife is in the kitchen and comes out to the bar from time to time. There may be a few other people working here, but understand tings take time. There is one toilet, clean as it may be to the back right behind pocket door that failed to flush while I was there. They took care of the issue, but it's one more thing that may annoy a person. They have a DJ on weekend nights and that may well suit the context and energy of the small triangle park in front of the restaurant quite well. If you're not accustomed to that kind of atmosphere, you may be turned off, but it might be the mood and energy you're seeking. If you can focus on the food, that is where you will be rewarded. I ordered the curry shrimp and it was delicious. The rice was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was not overcooked. The chef was paying close attention to cooking times and the curry sauce was right on point. The veggies were also not overcooked. In the midst of all that was going on that Saturday night, the DJing, the number of people in the busy little restaurant, the kitchen was together and turning out great food at a reasonable price in the low twenties, albeit with some delay in producing the same. Island Shack is very popular with the locals here. You can order a drink, sit in the small park, and enjoy great conversation as many people do here. I took my beer and curry shrimp outside as well and enjoyed the people in the small park. It's a vibe and you can catch it here as many people do. You have to understand Island Shack in context to appreciate it fully, especially when the weather is cooperative. 3.6 stars

Oxtail that sticks tightly to the bone is BAD oxtail! I went with my cousin to Island Shack this past Sunday to grab food to go. First, let me say that the vibes inside and outside are excellent. Soft glow lights, great DJ and a warm Caribbean vibe. Outside feels like Brooklyn used to be. Real Bk residents who knew and loved the neighborhood before the "G" word, sit at the tables outside just vibing. I didn't drink but the bartender looked busy and he was cool. Took my food home and my heart fell to my feet. My oxtail with rice and peas and veggies was turrrible! Fatty, undercooked, underseasoned pieces of meat sat in the corner of my container with crunchy, dried out rice. The steamed vegetables were nearly raw and barely any gravy. I thought that maybe I could doctor up this flavorless food myself but there was no saving it. No amount of pan frying, added seasoning or prayer would save this food. Disappointed.

I just wanted to provide an update. I've been to this several times now and each time the service has been great and the food has been good. Last night, my boyfriend and I ordered 2 Snapper fish dinners to go. Taking the train back I noticed that there was a very fishy smell coming from the bag. When we got home we noticed the fish that was fried, smelled very foul. Even when I pulled the fish apart it wasn't white and flaky but grey and slimy. I had to wrap it up and throw it away. It's very unfortunate but we work too hard to throw our money away.

    Absolutely delicious

The food was exceptional, I had the oxtails , peas and rice. Absolutely the best tasting Oxtails that I've ever had. The location is small and the service was very good.. definitely a great experience. Derrick M

When I say the food is good it's so delicious. Please go here for some good Trini food. This cute intimate Trinidadian restaurant is located right Downtown Brooklyn minutes away from BAM, and Atlantic Center. It's where the old Smoke Joint/ Peaches Hot House was located. The music was good and the staff was so sweet and accommodating. That Trini corn soup had lots of corn and was flavorful with the right amount of heat and mini dumplings. The mango chow was a perfect way to start our dinner. My stew snapper was the stellar item and must have dish. It was slightly sweet with peppa. Watch out for some tiny bits of scotch bonnet. The snapper was huge. The rice and peas had a bit too much peas for me but the rice was flavorful. I only tasted the curry since I couldn't eat meat and but it was good. Tell them @Eatingwithetienne aka Geraldine sent you. You would not be disappointed.

It was sort of an odd time so the spacious restaurant wasn't very busy. We studied the menu for too long and after much deliberation, here's what we ordered, in order of spice level: - Oxtail ($35): Not spicy, super flavorful, "Trimmed and sliced chunks of oxtail seasoned freely with fresh spices and simmered to tender perfection." - Curry goat ($29): Mildly spicy, "Goat meat marinated and cooked in curry spices and herbs makes this an exotic dish." - Jerk chicken ($20): Apparently incredibly spicy so I steered clear of it, "A Jamaican delight. Spicy, delicious chicken baked with this unique combination of spices from the island." The dishes I could handle were excellent, with no drop of sauce left unmopped. On the sides front, the rice and beans, roti, steamed vegetables, and plantains were all tasty. The entree sizes were hearty. Our server seemed like a cool dude: easygoing with a sense of humor. It was kind of chilly in the restaurant, not sure if we were in a warmth dead zone or what. The bathroom was frog-themed which was a cute touch!

What's to cheer - Nice not to too sweet homemade rum punch - Solid, flavorful oxtail. Very island spiced and cooked well - Goat was also really strong - Reasonable prices - service with personality What's to jeer - they were out of the jerk chicken unfortunately which I really wanted to try - place is pretty low key and not swimming with ambience

It came out as two huge slices of sourdough stacked so high that I couldn't even finish one. For something that expensive, there should absolutely be some indication of portion size, or at minimum the waiter should mention it when ordering. Avocado toast also isn't exactly something you can box up and save for later, so a lot of it just went to waste. Honestly, the menu feels arrogantly overpriced, what avocado toast dish is pushing $30? The only thing that seemed reasonably priced was the $35 bottomless brunch. Overall, the pricing felt excessive and the lack of transparency made the experience frustrating.

I'm Dominican so I know oxtail pretty well and have made it myself. Thankfully, this place absolutely delivered. The oxtail was perfectly slow-braised, tender, and falling right off the bone -- exactly how it should be. Absolutely amazing. Of course I had the rice and peas, plus some veggies. A few of the veggies were slightly overcooked, but still flavorful and enjoyable. The drinks looked incredible, but I went with the rum punch and loved it. It was a little sweet, but super flavorful, strong, and definitely worth ordering again. For dessert, I had the Hennessy cheesecake, which was rich, decadent, and unbelievably delicious. There were three of us dining, and we all left completely satisfied -- with take-home containers because the portions are VERY generous. The only thing that bothered me a bit was that our server seemed to focus most of her attention on my friend. She is Jamaican, and because I look like a white American woman, I felt a little overlooked at times, even when I had several requests myself. We also had to look for her a couple of times while she was sitting with a group nearby. That said, everyone overall was very nice and welcoming. The bussers especially stood out -- they checked on us often, kept everything clean, and even greeted me in Spanish, which I appreciated. He had been to the restaurant a few times - and had good things to say. We were not disappointed. I had the Brown Stew Red Snapper - *chef's kiss*. Hubby had the iconic Jerk Oxtail over Macaroni & Cheese Pie! The English language cannot convey the beauty of that combination! Tender, tender oxtail, falling off the bone with the creamy, cheesy mac & cheese! He wanted to savor that dish another day, so he got a to-go bag and took it back to the hotel! (I couldn't help but clean my plate - I was obsessed with the fish!) Our friend enjoyed the Hennessy Fried Shrimp (not pictured) - one of his favorite dishes at the restaurant. It looked delicious as well. For drinks, I had the Bob Marley cocktail. A colorful drink - flavorful - and effective! There were people celebrating their birthdays throughout the night - and the wait staff goes IN! I was enjoying watching at least 10 people receive the Stevie Wonder "Happy Birthday" song while we were there. Imagine my surprise when it was my turn! My birthday was the day before, and we had already celebrated in Manhattan. Having two special recognition events made the evening that much more special! Shout out to the Simpson crew who came with the song, the rhythm, the sparkling cake, and the good vibes! My 70th birthday was exceptional - without a doubt. The Simpson added the touch I needed. We'll definitely go back next time we're in Brooklyn!
