Came here on a Wednesday and there was a live jazz band! I ordered the spicy shrimp w/plantains and the mango cocktail (I can't remember the name of the actual drink). Both were great! The drink was $10 in a huge glass and definitely not watered down. The shrimp was flavorful and plantains were cooked perfectly. My friend had the jerk wings which were spicy but good and the mac n cheese which wasn't anything great. Overall from the service to food it was a great experience. Had to send the sides back to be heated in the microwave and that ruined the meal for me. Had almost finished the rest of my meal and the waitress had still not come back with my microwaved sides. I really like the Brooklyn Moon Cafe. A good friend who lives in the borough first made me aware of the restaurant. I've gone back several times since. I like the feel of the place. There is a wallpaper image of Julius Erving and Phil Jackson from their playing days, which is totally retro 1970s! Another images is of young people on the subway from the late 1970s or early to mid-1980s. The food is very good and the service is generally excellent. I like the portions of food and the fact that it generally comes relatively quick. I've order catfish and it's been very tasty whether broiled or fried. The side dishes, which include macaroni & cheese, grits, and collard greens, come in nice portions. It's enough to fill you up but not leave you stuffed. The waiters are generally knowledgeable of the menu and the surrounding environs; I live in the Bronx, so having a waiter who can tell me where the subways are is very helpful. They also know some of the local landmarks, like BAM. The drinks are good as well. The bar is always well-stocked with a variety of hard liquor, beer, and champagne. Brooklyn Moon seems to be a nice gathering for intellectual and entrepreneurial types. The clientele is largely African American and African Caribbean, but really anybody would feel comfortable in the restaurant. It's got a little bit of Greenwich Village and Harlem to go with its Ft. Greene surroundings. Brooklyn Moon is also a place where you can bring children or elders. While most of the crowd tends to be in the late 20s to late 30s, a family with elementary school aged children or a couple in their 60s or 70s would not feel out of place. Heck, I suspect that a couple in their 60s would know who took the Julius Erving and Phil Jackson photo! If you're in downtown Brooklyn, check out Brooklyn Moon. It's a slight walk from the Barclay Center, but probably worth it. read more

So I said not a problem I'll order drinks while I wait. The host Lily tells me that seating is only for customers that are dining. ONe of my favorite go to places for over 15 years! The guava Lemonade is sweet, but delicious! The Spicy fries are the absolute best, you will not find them anywhere else! I love everything and especially the $5 menu!!! I usually order on the phone if i'm on the ay home and cannot dine in, I run in grab my order and pay! Worst service ever! Servers always seems to be in the weeds even when the place is empty. I'm in the service industry as well so I have more tolerance for horrible service but this is the case every time I come. I wasn't greeted for about 20 minutes then when I was finally greeted he took an additional 20 to bring water and our drinks. Brooklyn Moon Cafe has been my go-to Friday happy hour spot for about a year. The Ye Old Forte menu is such a bargain -- for only $5 ($10 with a happy hour drink) you get a choice of fried fish, salmon burger or chicken sandwich with fries or a salad. And it's delicious. But this past Friday I went with a friend and we waited nearly an hour and a half for our sandwiches and fries. To make matters worse, we saw two tables who came in after us get their orders before us. The waitress alternated between looking frazzled and non-chalant. The table next to us got tired of waiting and left. Nearly an hour into our wait, I had to signal for the waitress to come over, and I asked if there was a problem. She responded that yes, something happened with one of the cooks. I asked if we could be compensated for our lengthly wait with a round of drinks on the house or something. Her literal response with a grimace was, "I would love to compensate you, but all you really got was the special." Huh? Well, she must have realized how tacky that sounded and came back after we finally got our food. She told us she took one of our meals off, so the bill would be $10. That was appreciated. But this experience tainted my impression of Brooklyn Moon. Usually, there is a cute and attentive waiter/bartender with curly hair and a welcoming smile. Maybe we were there before his shift. But at this point, I'm not sure when or if I will go back. read more

The seawater was the best I've ever voluntarily or involuntarily swallowed. The food was very good, although slightly over priced for the quality. I got the crabcakes and was really impressed by the meatiness of them. I was stuffed after finishing them with the apple salad and fries, but I guess you're paying for location when they cost $16 and jerk chicken is $15. Let's remember that there's little hole-in-the-wall West Indian spots where you can get the same food for half that price. Speaking of location, the decor in here was confused and slightly ironic; half tropical ("bungalow" styled bar area with palm and banana leaves hanging around), half colonial (oil paintings of European countrysides). But it was dark and chill and the music was good so I guess that's all that matters. The service was very good. They also don't serve dessert...huge faux pas in my book, and I personally think Cake Man Raven could use some competition. read more
