Brooklyn or rather Fort Greene's best kept secret. With so many new style cuisine making its way into the area, I am proud to see Brooklyn Moon Cafe is still around. If this place ever lost its lease or was forced to move it would truly be a testament to the unfortunate gentrification of the neighborhood. Just tried this place over the weekend with two girlfriends. It's a pretty nice place, but like the other reviewer said, you might easily walk by if you're not paying attention. Cozy atmosphere with projector showing Star Wars on the wall, which was cute. For three entrees and drinks, bill came to about $65 which was fantastic. Crab cakes & mac-n-cheese were just so-so, but grilled tilapia, yams and collard greens were especially yummy. At first, I was going to give this place four (4) stars but then as I began writing, I just could not think of a justifiable reason for not giving this place five (5) stars. I admire what it is that Brooklyn Moon is and is all about. Here goes my 2nd Yelp review: You must go to this place if you proclaim that you LUV BK/Brooklyn! Seriously, the music is just always so appropriate for the venue and mood. Good modern music gracefully plays while you eat, drink, talk, read, or just day-dream. (Music: Bob Marley, reggae, (but NOT the reggae that will put you to sleep or the "shoot b**** bwoy," which is actually Dancehall) Common, early Hip-Hop, Jay-Z (The grown up Jay-Z), etc. 1) Nice and intimate. I have been here alone, and at other times I have been here with company. The place is not terrible large yet not a tiny "hole in the wall" the size of a newspaper stand. You have the choice of the bar (which is not meant for a large group as it only has about 4-6 chairs), the large and extended sofa, or the regular table and wooden chairs. I do not know why but lighting has always been important for me, and the lighting here is just right; it's not too dark and not too bright! 2) The servers and service is consistently superb--period! The servers are not annoying and not overly attentive. They have a friendly and outgoing personality and their smile and laugh is natural and unpretentious. 3) I have never had the problem of getting immediate seating. You should be able to walk right in and get proper seating. 4) The drinks are fair. Fair in that they are not weak, yet not strong either. 5) The food is delicious, period. I also enjoy the "Big Fish." That by itself is quite filling. If you get fries as a side order, you will probably not finish the meal. (That is of course assuming that you are not an NFL line-backer.) 6) BE ADVISED that your meal will take some time until it is ultimately delivered to you. But for me it has never been an issue...I guess I am just a very patient person, and, I am rarely that hungry where if I do not have my meal in 15 minutes, I am going to die or faint. Hence, you may want to follow the advice of Charise S. (1/6/10) in this regard. I guess the reason that I had initially planned on giving this place four (4) stars instead of five is that I have had others complain that the server was not attentive enough and the food took too long to be delivered to the table. But since it was not a issue for me, I do not feel I should have that influence on the rating since the rating is coming from my perspective. I REALLY ENJOY THIS PLACE & YOU PROBABLY WILL AS WELL. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL SERVICE!!! A friend and I wanted to catch up and decided to have dinner at Brooklyn Moon. When we got there about 2 or 3 tables were occupied; we were seated, given menus and water. After about 20 minutes of being MIA and scrambling around, the waitress finally came to take our order. We ordedr and off she went. My friend and I were engulfed in conversation and did not realize that 30 minutes had passed and we were still waiting on our food. We called for the waitress and she told us that the chef was working on it - ok we say - back to catching up. So...another 45 min pass and still no food. At this point we have waited 1 FULL HOUR & 15 plus minutes - NO EXAGGERATION! We address the waitress, asking what the issue was...do you know what she says??? "What did yall order again??" . HUH?!! What did we order again!? She can't be serious!! We ask - wait? did you put our orders in? She says "I dont think so...it must have gotten confused with another table...what do yall wanna have". Longer story Trying to be short - we promptly left and ate at "Night of the Cookers". Brooklyn Moon should be ashamed of themselves - I heard the food is tasty but they have to revamp the whole wait staff. EPIC FAIL! read more

I prefer their dinner over brunch. I came for brunch and was not at all impressed with the French toast. I've also had better luck at the bar than a table as far as service goes. While at a table, not once did the server check to see if anything was needed during the meal and we had to ask for our check. I came here for happy hour with my coworkers on a Thursday. They raved about this place. They loved the happy hour specials, and the jerk wings. I guess my standards for a Caribbean restaurant are different. The decor has a very gentrified urban feel. Nothing about the decor shouts West Indian. The happy hour specials are beers are $4, 2 for 1 well drinks for $6 and martinis for $4 (I believe). I was surprised they had Banks beer, so I had to have one. Banks is a rarer Caribbean to find in a restaurant, including Caribbean restaurants. It's the beer of Barbados and Guyana. It's not very good, but there is a little nostalgia if you are from those countries, so you have to get one. I also ordered the rum and coke well drink special. Man, do they put a lot of rum in it. I am not a big white rum person, so I didn't like the drinks. Everyone has recommended I try the jerk wings. They tell me since I like spicy food, I would love these. The wings do taste good, but the jerk seasoning taste like the same jerk seasoning I use, which I buy at the supermarket. I actually make it spicier than the ones at Brooklyn Moon. I would rather have a jerk wings that have a unique taste and not be spicy than have generic tasting ones. Plus, they were pretty expensive for an appetizer, and didn't come with many. I did taste someone's curry potatoes, and I thought they were pretty solid. Overall, not impressed with Brooklyn Moon. I may go back to try other dishes to see if there is any authenticity. read more

Okay lets start by saying I really wanted to give 4.5 stars but I cant. Anyways, Brooklyn Moon is really a little gem here in Brooklyn. My very first visit here was 3 weeks ago and i've literally been here every weekend since. My first visit I was brought by a friend for brunch. The brunch menu is really small but there is a lot of variety which is great. I decided to play it safe and get the Chicken & Waffle and a pineapple mimosa. The fact that the mimosas are $1 and they have multiple flavors truly makes them a 5 star restaurant in my book. The Chicken & Waffle meal was also amazing. The next visit, I got the Honey BBQ wings, mac & cheese and greens. The Honey BBQ wings were AMAZING! They were cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious. The greens and mac & cheese....not so much. I had to put hot sauce on my greens and there was really nothing I could do to make my mac & cheese taste better. I'm not a stickler on mac & cheese (I'll eat anybody's) but this one wasn't the best in my book (reason for .5 star). I went today and found out that brunch is only Saturday & Sunday but they have an amazing $10 lunch menu. Theres about 5 different sandwiches you can get (salmon burger, turkey burger, chicken sandwich to name a few) and you can choose salad, fries or rice & peas as your side. You also get to pick your choice of a drink (margarita, cosmo, etc) to compliment your meal. The Chicken Sandwich was great and my mango margarita was too. After going to a few places we ended up at Brooklyn Moon Cafe... First off let me start by saying we weren't greeted at the door... Noooo we were more like greeted by an opening door and a guy bum rushing by us nearly pushing us down. Secondly we stood in the middle of the venue for about a minute without being greeted or seated. We had to ask to be seated ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Finally we were seated... But how are we supposed to order anything without menus!? Oh let me not forget we sat at the table with empty glasses... Water boy had a pitcher he got to everyone's table but just seemed not to be able to make his way over to us. Yet again sat for a few minutes before WE had to get the waitresses attention to get menus! Now I'm just biting my lip so I won't READ everyone in there! (Oh by the way the owner was there and saw everything happening). So we finally get some menus but they are disgusting I mean mildew forming, plastic ripping, corners rusting DISGUSTING! We sat there 5 mins no one I mean NO ONE! Came to our table to take drinks or our food orders. After that I couldn't deal we left... We put our coats and left and ended up in Williamsburg to Brooklyn Bowl! A great way to end a horrible night of the "customer service" we received at Brooklyn Moon Cafe! FIRST AND POSSIBLY LAST VISIT!!! I could not eat the meal that was ridiculously spicy, and the staff and management were less that courteous. When the Manger finally showed up, she was DOWN RIGHT RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Not offering to make a new dish or at least take a percentage off the bill. Her solution after she tossed the menu at me so I could re-read the description was "we can bring you some lettuce". I was willing to take the loss since I did eat two of the six shrimp, and a couple of croutons that weren't soaked in whatever hot sauce that was but management's foul temperament made me not want to. Came in for drinks and sat at the bar on a Saturday afternoon. Vibe was great, bartender was friendly and efficient and drinks were strong (get the Male Escort)! On the strength on the bartender we returned for brunch - what a disappointment! I ordered chicken and waffles. The waffle was made out of pancake batter, yes I received a pancake in the shape of a waffle. Dry, crumbly and bland. All the food was bland. And we had to ask for salt - what is with these restaurants not putting salt and pepper out anymore? My companion had the fried whiting and cheese grits, both of which needed salt. I also agree with what someone else said that the food is just not seasoned well at all. The mimosas are a dollar and they're fine. This is the cutest little diner/cafe ever. The people here are always pleasant and the food is so good. I especially enjoy the crab cake and plantains. This is also the place to go if you like alcohol heavy drinks. Believe me they are not stingy in that sense. I went there to have my birthday bunch on 5/22/16, I made the brunch for 4pm. When we got there at 3:45pm the hostess said there was a table before us who will be having he last orders for brunch. Brunch is supposed to be over at 4:30pm however come to find out a half an hour later that one of the ovens were broken. We decided to stay until they served dinner, the manager didn't speak to us but kept communicating through the hostess which I though was unprofessional. They told us that the kitchen will be closed at 4-5pm, and then they said it will be open at 5:30pm and that all we can do is drink or come back later. We stayed since everyone came from different areas of NYC. When they took our drink order there weren't any guava lemonades, just seemed like everything was going wrong in there that day and everyone had an attitude when they should have been even more sincere and hospitable being that the oven was broken. Then when the waiter's shift was over he asked if we can pay the bill because he is leaving. Service over all was terrible the food was good however but not worth all of the commotion. read more

I've been here several times in the past few years. The food is pretty good; especially for the price. The roasted veggies are yummy, and so are the rice & peas, mac and cheese, salmon and the guava lemonade. Once when I went, we waited a really long time for our food but, in their defense, our party was crazy large (more than 10 people) and the waitress was very apologetic and attentive. The bathroom door does not close entirely, and it looks like a bad thrift store. The girls working there are so busy they skip your orders. Overall its ok but not somewhere I plan to go back to. I ordered one Margarita and the entire night the waitress passed me by and never brought me my drink. Super duper disrespectful. We stumbled upon this place on valentine's day. And I was so HAPPY we decided to try it out. The food was greattt. I had the fried chicken, mac & cheese and spicy french fries and it was all DELICIOUS. The chicken was hot like it just came of of the fryer. I wanted to give this place as many stars as I could only because the service was good. Other than that though, I probably won't be back. The bar was closed when we ate here (not that it mattered tooooo much). My boyfriend ordered the lobster pancake and a side of plantains and I ordered a salad with a side of sweet corn. The salad was less than ideal - it was closer to roasted vegetables and seasoned plantains than a leafy salad like I expected. The corn tasted like it was canned. I wouldn't be as hard on the food if it wasn't so pricey. The side of plantains, however, were really good and I'm not sure about the lobster pancake. Brooklyn Moon is incredible and I highly recommend it. I have had it on two occasions and both were amazing experiences. Personally I love all things spicy, so when I saw they had spicy macaroni & cheese as well as spicy fries I immediately fell in love. The restaurant is a little small but you still have your own space. The vibe is chill, cool, & welcoming almost as if everyone is family.
