I feel that it is very important to write about my most recent experience at Roots. We have visited this clinic more than once for blood work and check-up. The staff is very thorough. I have to say, I was very saddened when Dr. Salas left as she has been my Vet for over 10 years. We followed her here from Animal Kind in Park Slope. I am so glad that we came here to have such a positive experience with Dr. Stronger! I noticed when I went to look at reviews for different clinics all around New York City, I was unable to find detailed reviews that are recent to help others that are in search of a great clinic. Brooklyn Roots deserves more than 5 stars! Most recently, I brought my Yorkie/Maltese mix to Roots to have his teeth cleaned. It is such a nerve-racking experience to have your dog under anesthesia. I have to say, the entire experience was very pleasant. Dr. Stronger kept us up to date along the way. She is very professional, kind, and knowledgeable. I have a very high energy dog that suffers from severe separation anxiety. We felt at ease dropping him off for his appointment (unable to go inside due to COVID-19). He is also leash aggressive towards other dogs. They made the appropriate arrangements for all of this. It is reassuring to visit a place where animals are top priority but vets/technicians are incredibly experienced. We had the blood work, check-up, and surgery here. He was prescrived the appropriate antibiotics before his surgery. It has been 2 weeks since his surgery and he is healing nicely. He still has stitches that are dissolving. He finished the last of his medicine yesterday. I can tell how much happier he is, his mouth is all clean and his breath is great. Our JuJu was in pain, had horrible breath - and it made us very upset to see him this way as he is a member of our family. We would clean his teeth but sometimes genetics really play a role in this. New York City is so blessed to have Dr. Stronger and her staff share their gifts and talents within our Community. She explained thoroughly what to be expected before and after the procedure. Disappointed. I have to admit my mistake. I booked an appointment for my sick guy and I missed it, it was my fault. I attempted to reschedule for the next week. But, I was told, "due to the urgency of your pet's condition Dr. Spooner suggests you bring him in tomorrow". AND I would be charged an additional 108.00 for the ER visit. I love my pet so I am worried ... I say Ok ... it's a pandemic I really can't afford it but I will. fast forward to the 30 min trauma of putting my cat in his carrier the following day. Mind you, I call one hour before I leave and ask what the procedure is for dropping off my sick pet today, I explained that I was told to bring my boy in because of his condition she said oh (and named my pet by his name)yep... they tell me to come on over, call us and we will come down and get your pet. I drive 30 mins in traffic, I arrive and I'm met at the door with someone asking if I have an appointment... I say no. But I was told to bring my pet in today. She said, "well, sorry she's in surgery." Wait, but I JUST called and was told to bring my pet... she says yeah well sorry I think there's a place down the street. So I have my 16-year-old asthmatic cat with a UTI and some severe arthritis in a travel bag in my car FOR FUN. Because all they had for me was "sorry". MID-PANDEMIC .... when I should be home. My cat could be resting but he will be hiding under a bed for a week wondering why we put him in a bag. I drive to three locations there were 3-4 hour waits. I drive him home in the same condition to make an appointment for next week LIKE I ASKED FOR IN THE FIRST PLACE... before being upsold on an emergency visit that THEY don't even think is an emergency when I show up. DISAPPOINTED. UPDATE: They NEVER CALLED to reschedule. I reached out to them, they never answered my email. I found out my cat has severe kidney failure and he was dehydrated requiring an IV after I scramble to find another Vet last minute after realizing I was getting nowhere with them. If you have a sick pet in need of immediate services DO NOT GO HERE. read more

I REALLY wanted to like this vet, it's a newer clinic with women veterinarians! All seemed great until our 2nd follow-up visit and lack of follow-up on meds is when we decided to stop going there. We took our miniature dachshund pup for her initial check up and vaccines. The staff were friendly, and the clinic is very clean. For her next round of vaccines and meds she was on for a common puppy infection, giardia. However, the vet we had been assigned to, spent no time looking looking at our file and asked us what shots we were there for? This person also suggested our tiny 6lb puppy (less than 6 months old) needed 'training' because she seemed like she wanted to bite and could be 'vicious'. The vet had spent no time letting her sniff her, give her a treat or anything. Of course not, if you just grab her she's not going to be crazy about a stranger! This was so unlike the other vet we had seen and other staff who spent time giving treats or putting peanut butter on a stick to help calm her nerves. We were told the prescription we were supposed to pick up we hadn't picked up--they had called me once, not even tried a different number on our account and didn't bother to send an email (we had previously communicated via scheduling on email). I would be very cautious to recommend this vet again and would not go unless you carried with you your own printed copies of all of your pets medical records. read more

Last week on the way to work, I found a live chicken running around on the sidewalk. (I think it must have fallen off a truck? Still not sure, honestly.) I stayed with the chicken and called Animal Control, but couldn't get through. All the operators were busy and I had to leave a message. I had no idea what to do. I was standing there, late for work, no prior experience caring for birds of any kind, trying to make sure a chicken didn't run into traffic. I googled vets in the area and saw that Brooklyn Roots was just down the street, so I gave them a call. I explained the situation, and within minutes they sent a vet tech out to meet me. He was awesome. I showed him where the chicken was (at this point, it had run into a parking lot and was hiding under a minivan), and he crawled under the car to get it. The chicken got spooked and started to run away, but the tech was able to catch it pretty quickly. Less than five minutes after he'd arrived, the vet tech was heading back to Brooklyn Roots, chicken in tow. I wasn't a paying customer, I wasn't a pet owner, I was just a random pedestrian who found a chicken. This staff is clearly willing to go above and beyond to take care of animals, and I'm so grateful they were there. read more

Love this place! I came across Brooklyn Roots after originally scheduling an appointment for my 2 year old cat at Park Slope Veterinary Center for 11:30 am this morning. They ended up canceling my appointment as I was on my way there so long story short I was very unhappy since I took time off work for this appointment. I still needed to take my cat to the vet for his annual wellness exam and vaccinations today so I quickly looked up vets near me and found Brooklyn Roots. I called them up and they were able to see my cat within 20 minutes of my call despite the fact that it wasn't an emergency. When I arrived, I was really impressed with how clean and professional the center was. The young woman at the front desk was extremely personable and Dr. Salas was amazing! She answered all of my questions, went through every detail of my cats history with me and was really sweet and patient with him as he gets really stressed out easily. Dr. Salas is extremely knowledgeable and provided me with some insight on some of my cats previous conditions that other vets weren't able to tell me much about. Like another Yelper stated, this review is long overdue! My kitty Disco is a sweetie pie, but his demon side comes out at the vet. His anxiety and suvival skills learned on the streets as a stray are in full effect! Dr. Stronger and the BRV team are so patient and loving with him. It's been such a relief to find a vet who knows how to deal with anxious cats compassionately and professionally, without rushing us out of the office and giving him the bare minimum of care. Came into Brooklyn Roots Vet when my newly adopted cat, who I was warned has a history of gastrointestinal and behavioral(extremely anxious) issues, began to have problems with his litter box training. On the way over to the hospital, Ozzy vomited & peed all over his carrier. Dr. Stronger & team were quick to settle my anxieties and even cleaned his carrier. Dr. Stronger called me on the phone to discuss his medical history -- and even noted disparities in the records that my adoption agency provided me. Regardless, she ordered urine and blood work testing, and reported back on his diagnosis not more than 2 days later. Dr. Stronger was extremely responsive in our email correspondence, quick to recommend a dietary plan for Ozzy, and was generally extremely helpful. read more

Dr. Salas has been caring for our dogs for years. She was wonderful and kind through the very end of our last dog's life, and she's been caring for our now dog since we got him years ago. We were so excited to hear that she's opened her own place with the great Dr. Stronger. We brought Leo there as soon as they opened, and we love their new space. We trust them completely - they've more than earned it. That last dog of ours had...let's say personality to spare, and Dr. Salas was totally unphased by his quirks. And dear Leo is a little bit of a wimp; Dr. Salas and no one else on earth is capable of trimming his nails. As someone else has mentioned below, they don't try to sell you on extra services; they have terrific judgment about what's important and what isn't. In your life you need five people you can trust: a doctor, a mechanic, a contractor, a hairdresser, and a vet. Here is one of those things. read more

She's incredibly knowledgeable and capable but not afraid to refer out to specialists when the problem is beyond the norm. (I've had some animals with complicated conditions). After a few solid loyal years, my cockapoo and I are saying Goodbye to this facility. Tyson started immunotherapy injections in early 2020. After nearly 9 months of weekly injections it became difficult to administer them at home. I requested to switch Tyson to oral treatment however mistakenly additional vial of Injectable medicine was ordered. When the time came to pick up the oral medicine Dr. Stronger refused to dispense the oral medicine unless I covered the injectable vial as well despite the fact that it was ordered through a misunderstanding. Business is a business and that's understandable however to withhold medicine in such a manner is not human. I spent thousands of dollars over the years in this facility for all different types of services for Tyson so this type of treatment to a well paying customer was a surprise. Rebecca Stronger, a medical professional didn't offer a resolution to ensure her patient didn't have a gap in a treatment she started. Thankfully Tyson has a back up Vet in the neighborhood and we were able to continue treatment. We miss Dr. Salas though and wish she never left. Her care and warm approach is sincerely missed. Brooklyn roots hasn't been the same without her. read more

This place is PHENOMENAL. The attention, the lack of wait time, the cleanliness, the care... my list could go on. I had gone to another vet twice for the same issue (it wasn't getting any better but my pockets were getting emptier -- that's another review!). I hadn't known BRVH was there until a friend told me about them. Dr. Stronger spent nearly forty minutes with my dog and I. Then she did a skin scraping and boom... figured out what the issue was. This practice is a godsend. My beloved cat Ziggy got very sick while I was out of town. My husband took him, even though we had never used the practice before, because it was urgent and they were close. They were extraordinarily kind, patient and helpful. Unfortunately, our experience with this vet has been disappointing. We have a 7 month-old Labrador puppy. When she was 4 months, she injured her left front paw playing with other dogs in the park. We spent hundreds of dollars in X-Rays because the vet thought she had a problems with her hips. She ultimately told us to give her some pain killers, rest her and to make sure she would not eat too much. It turns out that her growth plates were damaged and she started developing what is known as elbow dysplasia, a common condition among Labrador Retrievers. A couple of months later, our puppy injured her left front paw again. This time we went to AMC. They wondered why I mostly had X-rays of our puppy's hips when she had had a problem on her front left paw. I went back to the vet to ask her about that. She gave me an explanation that could have been pretty convincing if it had not ended with her saying "your dog is a mess". After spending hundreds of dollars at this vet and after wasting precious months where we could have started a treatment and probably minimized our puppy's pain, it felt just too much to hear that she was "a mess" as the ultimate excuse for not seeing the original injury. So we decided to look for a different vet. PS: Our dog has no issues with her hips. read more

I got a rescue dog about four weeks ago and, after trying several local vets (and being really disappointed), I visited Dr. Salas today on the advice of a dog trainer. What a fabulous place and vet! Receptionist was lovely, as were Dr. Salas and the vet tech. Dr. Salas explained so much to me about feeding my dog (a big challenge) and took her time to answer all of my questions. After other vet visits that left me confused, I left this appointment as a more confident dog owner. I've scheduled my dog's dental surgery there for early January (the first vet I saw couldn't do it until March). The visit today, a consultation, was also very reasonably priced. Not that felt I didn't get very good care there, or that any vet wasn't good (though the random assignment of available vets for the appointment was not ideal), I just took the opportunity to have her again as my vet (and I must admit leave the busy and often crowded AK). I'm a bit divided on leaving a glowing review, as I (selfishly) don't want Brooklyn Roots to become the vet for everyone within 5 miles, but they deserve it : ) She and Dr. Stronger have created a great place here. I appreciate their approach, which is very personal and compassionate, not that of a busy mill. Those who want to make an appointment and go straight to an invasive operation should look elsewhere. I've been taking my cats to Dr. Stronger for years now and am so happy that she and Dr. Salas have started their own practice. Both of them were wonderful with my geriatric cat that had kidney disease. Once, when I had to seek the advice of another vet at their old practice, who told me to euthanize my cat, Dr. Stronger offered a radically different opinion. She gave my cat antibiotics and he lived for another happy year, til the age of 21. Her approach is to treat the whole animal rather than the numbers (unlike the vet who told me to euthanize prematurely). I fully trust these doctors with my pets. read more
