This guy was my first dog doctor and when he passed away this guy didn't even show remorse and when I started to cry he said to keep it down I will never ever go here.He might be cheap but for a doctor he awful. It breaks my heart to leave this review and warning. This veterinarian is so kind but is experiencing clear signs of dementia . Upon arrival I noted how incredibly unsanitary the entire office is. My best guess is it hasn't been cleaned in years. There are used syringes in open air and no cabinets for any medicine organization/storage. I had explained over the phone, my reason for bringing in my dog, and upon arrival, I was asked all of the same questions as if we had never spoken before. In my 15 minute interaction the doctor asked me the exact same diagnostic question no less than six times as if he had not asked me the question 45 seconds prior. While I was in the consultation, the office also received two calls from debt collectors which the doctor hung up on. I believe his ability to maintain his finances, as well as his practice, are simply out of his control. He is so kind and so gentle clearly loving animals but unfortunately is my honest opinion beyond capability to safely, treat pets. No other vet in this neighborhood would see my cat or give me an appointment as Covid has hit this neighborhood for price gouging and greed. It was this vet or traveling to east New York. Novick is straight to the point, old school but he got the job done. Checked the kitten for broken bones, checked her dental, ears, eyes and signs of not grooming and she had a clean bill of health. It was determined she had a bruised shoulder and was given a steroid for pain and for appetite stimulant. He charged me and 6 hours later my little girl is back on her feet jumping around. Thanks man! The emergency vet was charging me 190$ just to see her (the ones on fourth Avenue) the ones on Atlantic had me on the phone for 15 minutes just to tell me they had not appointment available. This is the kind of old school vet that we are all very lucky to have. He has seen thousands and thousands of animals. He knows how to diagnose using good physical exam and history. He is not trying to over charge or sell you on unnecessary things. Dr Novick kind and intelligent. He has a very old school office that could use a good cleaning. I would love to help him out one Saturday and spruce the place up. Like other reviewers said, it's old school Brooklyn. But don't let that turn you off. Dr. Novick is like a country vet- and calls you every couple of days to check on your pet. He's old fashioned and very smart. And you get the sense he has seen it all. He is very reassuring and I believe he knows veterinary medicine extraordinarily well based on his years of experience. He never makes you feel guilty as a pet-parent. You aren't going to get a fancy office or nurse with this guy but you will get a very accurate diagnosis and affordable care. And an extremely caring person looking after you and your animal. I had called Dr. Novak out of desperation after being bombarded by the previous vet I had gone to for a blood test and tons of medication I didn't think a 7 MONTH OLD cat needed. The previous vet had told me she either had a list of malignant issues: Kidney disease Liver disease Flooded Uterus When her coat was absolutely taken care of, playfulness at 100% and no loss of appetite. I just took her in for her usual checkup when they found small amounts of gingivitis. I took her home and started giving her an anti-septic gel in which I saw results after 3 days instead of getting that stupid Dr.'s recommendation... talk about scamming pet owners. (They tried to charge me $660...) Now Dr. Novak is the most sweet person! My kitty had a swollen lymph node from what I could tell and I wanted to make sure she was doing okay! So instead of going back, I went here. The place is very old, you can tell it's been around for a while. But that didn't stop me, I heard good things and wanted to see for myself. When I went in I was seen exactly at the scheduled time and not only did he do a full checkup (which the other place didn't) He also went about explaining everything that was happening! I was being EDUCATED as a pet owner about what the swollen lymph node could indicate. I feel that a vet who truly cares will prepare you for any sort of changes in their behavior and he definitely did that. He said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Meanwhile the other doctor didn't even bother to explain what the blood work means in simple English. I went home feeling so relieved after a stressful 3 days since the last visit. He made me feel reassured that I was doing my Fur Mom duties correctly. Dr Novak is a wonderful, funny, happy person! He loves helping people and you can definitely see it in his eyes. Ok. The reviewers are accurate on the facilities being dated, but honestly who cares. I need my animal checked. He's older gentleman and is old school. You need an appointment, but I'm sure he'll take walkins. He has good bedside manner, and is knowledgeable. I went in for my cat that was vomiting excessively after we changed his food. My bad. Like the one star reviewer pointed out if you're not from Brooklyn or are not lucky enough to have been/are married to a Brooklynite this vet may scare you off. This.Dude.Is.Old-School.Brooklyn. The glass of the front door is cracked. The office waiting room has those old wooden chairs back when decent wood was cheap. He was dressed in adidas windbreaker pants and a hawaiian button up shirt. He had no computer and wrote everything down on a badly cut out piece of paper. Like I said old school. Once you get past that or if you're like me if you love that vibe you can talk to him about regulations and biology and he does know what he's talking about. I took a stray to him to have him neutered and he pushed me to get the vaccines (as any good vet should) and checked him out for flees and other infections. This guy's prices are like nothing I've ever heard of in this city. Animal Kind (our regular vet) was going to charge [to best of my recollection] $500 for neuter and shots. He is letting us get away with $250. (Though Animal kind was going to do more bloodwork for that price, he says it's not necessary. ). Williamsburg Vet clinic was charging [to best of my recollection] $300 something. If you want ambiance and your expectations of a contemporary vet met go to those guys. If you can put up with a little weirdness about no computer system and him being the only staff and some eccentricity see him. He's a great guy and will pop a few jokes with you. I get the sense from talking with him he knows what's going on. He may lose customers due to his bed side manner but that sort of thing was just a thing back in the day. I went to a human doctor just like him. I'm going back to pick my cat up at 6 and will let you know how he's doing by updating this review. Got him back from neutering and Dr Novick even was kind enough to call the next morning to check up on him, which doesn't take much but it shows he cares and/or is good at his job. Most importantly for us he doesn't nickel and dime you for walking into the door. He gives you what you really need. When I go to the vet it's like going to the mechanic where they'll usually sign you up with so much stuff that you don't need, and they know you don't have the expertise. Anyway good guy This guy is aces in my book but I recommend that he learn how to use a computer and learn how to use a credit card machine. I was there for 20 mins plus trying to straighten out a transaction and learning about credit card 'batching' and calling my bank etc. His demeanor might also scare off some people but I'm fine with it. Dr. Novick got a panicked call from us last night about our sick dog and told us we could bring him in anytime we want as he lives right there and would make himself available. FYI, all the other vets in the area are closed on Sunday and were closed at 7 pm on a Saturday as well. HUGE brownie points, doc! We found easy parking at the vet and strolled on in. He's quite casual, friendly, amusing (he can crack some good jokes), and down to earth. Even better, he charged a fair price and was very affordable. He spent a long time with our dog, gave him a few shots, prescribed a few meds and otherwise handled him. What we took him was a much happier dog. How's the office? Plain and vanilla and quite clean. We were the only patients, so, I really felt special. It was the first Vet office I had ventured into that didn't smell like Animal House. Anyhow, thanks Doc. After some consideration and some more experiences with Dr. Novick, I have to revise my review. The last time I came to him I had a bad experience. My dog had a puncture wound that became swollen and infected. Dr. Novick has treated this before with my dog but this time, he made a cut so deep, I'm worried if it will heal. So much puss and blood came out the wound and he barely had enough paper towels to clean it up. No gloves. Didn't even tell me that it might've been a deep incision. And after coming here a few times, I've noticed he does the same thing. Flip through his mess of a drawer trying to find your file and then says he cant find it. Take forever getting your info and then take forever getting your credit card to work. Not coming back here again. read more

I'm a new cat owner about 7 years new. My first cat was an adult and she trained me. So when I got 2 brothers after her death, I found out first hand how hard it is to train cats. (Yeah, I know some of you are laughing at me!) I noticed one of my boys wasn't moving like he used to. He was trying to use the litter box and couldn't. I decided to see if it was just a bug in his system that would work it's self out but after the second day where he wasn't moving at all I got really scared. I called Dr. Novick at midnight on a Friday night. After describing his symptoms he told me that my boy was blocked and he need to become unblocked. He did not lie to me and told me that it was quite expensive. After such honesty I brought my boy to him the that morning. He immediately identified the problem. He quoted me a price and I agreed. With high hopes I left my boy there. That was at 11:30a at 1pm I got a call telling me that the procedure was successful. Dr. Novick wanted to keep him overnight to monitor his progress. Unfortunately he became blocked again. Thus began a terrible cycle for the next 5 days. I was faced with a decision that no pet lover wants to make. Dr. Novick pleaded with me to give it another day. I had given up hope. I was too emotionally wrung out from the past 4 days but I reluctantly agreed. I did not want to play God this week. Wouldn't you know it his faith was rewarded. My hope was renewed. My boy took a turn for the better. Dr. Novick went above and beyond his call of duty. I could ask no more of professional. He is the kind of person you want working on your pet especially in an emergency. I agree with the others about the office. Dr. Novick has not embraced the computer age. Do not let that deter you. Dr. Novick is worth it! You want someone who cares more than you will about your pet. He will give you honest advise and give you realistic expectations. You will not be nickeled and dimed for walking in the door. You will receive great care for your pet. You will not be asked to keep coming back just to be charged for every visit. (One reason I will not go back to another pet clinic) I can not recommend Dr. Novick highly enough! If I could I'd double the rating! read more

I visited the call ahead vet in a pickle and was terribly dissatisfied with my experience. When I arrived I was put off by how unprofessional the doctor was, and then further disarmed as he was unable to speak properly and appeared intoxicated. I was here to get a very general shot for my dog so that we could go camping the next day, and even though I was not fully comfortable with the situation, I assumed that this was a very routine procedure and that it couldn't go that wrong. Unfortunately, I was incorrect. First the doctor made me hold my dogs head, because there was no nurse or other support there, while he was administering the shots. According to the other vet I visited this is very poor practice. THEN, he couldn't seem to get the needle in the dog properly. He repeatedly jabbed the needle into my dogs back and at one point the needle was just hanging out of my dogs back while I was trying to hold his head because he was freaking out and screaming (60 lb dog). Finally, the doctor regained control of the needle and pulled it out and my dogs back swelled up to the size of a baseball. Needless to say, after this experience I walked my dog up the block to the other vets office to have them check his back and ensure that the needle didn't break off and he would be okay while I was at work. In summary, despite how close this office is to where I live, I do not recommend anyone visiting or soliciting his services even for a last minute emergency. I do not think he is fit to be handling animals. read more

A few weeks ago on a very hot day I found a dog that had been hit by a car and was severely malnourished a block away from this vet. In a panic I called to see if this vet could help. The owner of this place refused to see the animal until I agreed to be financially responsible, I agreed. I bought the dog in and the was surprised with the extreme lack of empathy for the injured animal and the overall annoyance with our presence. The owner told me that the dog's leg was probably broken and he needed a hospital. Once it was clear the dog could not be treated there I began the searching for a place to bring the animal. I asked the vet if he had any food and water he could give the dog and he said NO since I was leaving soon and then pressed me to leave. I was outraged and told him we would not wait outside since it was so hot, I told him the dog could die and he responded "well, we're all gonna die someday". I found an emergency vet hospital to take the dog and called an Lyft, at this point the owner said I needed to leave immediately and he had better things to do with his day (I had been there for 15 minutes total at that point). Instead of screaming at this piece of shit I decided to focus on the dogs care and leave. After all of this I got the dog to the hospital and he got the care he needed and lived. I have never seen this level of apathy in the face of a badly injured animal. Thinking about how this man reacted is anger inducing to say the least. I don't really know how this little turd stays in business, but I hope whoever reads this will take their animal elsewhere. This man should not be caring for animals. read more

Actually, I'm not sure that I agree with his approach any longer - the don't fix it if it's not broken approach. I think if it's on the verge of breaking, you should probably fix it. I think if you can take steps to prevent it from breaking sooner, you should probably take those steps. Let's just say that my cat's breath kept getting progressively worse and more redness started to develop on her gums. I finally went to another dentist (about 10 months later) who told me that 3 plus teeth had to be pulled and that she was in need of a cleaning (I found this dentist to be trustworthy). After the procedure, her breath was great!... (well, relatively, she's a cat), and her mouth looked a lot healthier. ... wish I didn't take Call Ahead Vet's advice after all and got her taken care of sooner. read more

Dr. Novick is very nice, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, funny & has the best prices you can find anywhere! Unfortunately, my poor Bruno had a tick and our vet had left for the evening. I used Yelp to find an emergency vet and found Call Ahead Vet. We met Dr. Novick and he was available right away. We took a chance and headed there right away. First off, don't be turned off by the appearance of the location because the place is old school, which did not bother me after I met Dr. Novick. He was funny and made us feel better. He took care of Bruno removed the tick promptly and effectively. He treated him with an anti-allergen & antibiotic. He was very informative and knowledgeable. My boyfriend and I are very grateful to have met Dr. Novick because we were able to see him at a late hour and right away. He did not overprice us either. His prices are much more reasonable than any other emergency Vet service (which we called one by Flatbush Ave & they told us $350). I would go back to Dr. Novick but hopefully I won't have to and my dog will continue to be in good health. Hope my review helps! read more

Went in for a last minute appointment because I couldn't get in at my normal vet or anywhere else. All of the 24 hour emergency clinics wouldn't do general practice, and all I needed was a health certificate and a sedative for my dog to travel on a plane. This was the only general practitioner that I could find open 24 hours. In short, I agree with most of the reviewers. This guy is OLD school. Same procedure as described by others...jotted down our info on a piece of computer paper and did a quick examination that didn't seem very thorough (looked in her ears, felt her abdomen, checked her teeth and pronounced her healthy). I'm not even really sure what drug he gave her but I'll just google it to make sure it's nothing fishy. Overall, the visit was completely satisfactory for what I needed. He does slur as others have mentioned, but he used to be a boxer (as is evidenced by the punching bag in the exam room) and he said that it messed up his speech. I DO NOT believe that he was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol...just an old man with an old fashioned veterinary practice. Unless I need something on short notice again I will not be returning, namely because I live in Williamsburg and it's completely out of the way, but also because I prefer a more modern and organized practice. He was easy on the purse strings, though, and was pleasant to speak with. read more

After trying a few other vets in the area my opinion is that you should bother going anywhere else. Period. Dr Novick is very competent and patient. He has the heart of a teacher and explained in detail our Dog's situation. Where other vets in the area had advised on a much more extensive, expensive and risky procedure, he did solve the situation without putting our dog's health at risk. He also showed us what to do regularly in order to prevent the issue form happening again. I cannot be more pleased with his services. If you absolutely need to have the fancy office and the frills, this is not your vet. But don't judge a book from its cover: if you want a reliable professional that does not charge you the moon and is very straightforward, do not bother calling anyone else. read more

Not the typical vet office you'll expect to see. My 12 year old cat wasn't feeling her regular self, and it got to the point where her eyes were yellow, and pus with blood was visible. I took her to the vet in Warren St. in Brooklyn which charged me about 200 just to give me a diagnose of pyometra. In need of a rapid surgery that would run me 3000 not including Additional changes. I was devastated because it was surgery there and then or she would die. I call Dr. Novick he gave me a fair price way cheaper than that and took my cat in. He kept my cat under his watch for 4 days and when he returned home she looked better and after normal despite her stitches. Till this day she's alive thanks to him ! Told him the situation I'm having with my puppy (Cherry Eye both eyes) asked him for a quote on a price for corrective surgery and got it over the phone. Set up an appointment on a call back which took about 10 minutes and looking forward to having my puppy back to normal with DR. Novick's help. Unfortunately, my sister and I recently brought our elderly dog here after she was lethargic, stopped eating, lost weight and seemed to be struggling to do basic things. We were scared. The vet said she showed all the signs of a dying, declining dog after taking her temp, feeling her belly and looking at her externally. He mentioned doing blood tests but would have to send that to an external lab. Long story short, he asked if we wanted to put our dog down that same day. We declined thinking it would be best to make her last days at home as comfortable as possible. He gave us some 'just in case"antibiotics since he said sick dogs are just more prone to picking up bacteria and viruses. So my sister was giving our dog the antibiotics and our dog improved. She started eating and drinking again,over the course of the next few weeks. I can't imagine if we had decided to put her down the day we took her in. I've been to Dr. Novick's office twice with my mini-Chihuahua puppy. He's a competent, calm, kind and patient doctor who's willing to meet the needs of his patients, even if those needs are before or after office hours. His fees are way lower than the average professional in the area and he's even certified in animal chiropractic (big points with me because I practice human chiropractic). He follows up the next day via phone call to check on your pet's condition. His office is not set up for surgery but he can handle most medical issues, included radiology, if necessary. If you're looking for a fancy store front, designer furniture or a receptionist, Dr. Novick may not be a good fit for you. However, if you live in the Park Slope area and you want a capable, affordable, experienced veterinarian, I recommend Dr. Novick very highly. read more

My cat was not eating, had stopped grooming himself and seemed to have a fever. Dr. Novak was the only place I called, where I not only got to see him the same day but with two hours. I've tried plenty of different veterinary clinics in the brooklyn area trying to find one that didnt seem to only care about the financial aspect but I think Ive found my permanent vet. He was kind and courteous, as well friendly and reassuring. I felt better about the situation almost right away and my cat is doing much much better. His costs are also much lower than surrounding clinics, only $50 for a visit compared to the usual 60-110 ive seen. Totally recommend him for your pet! read more

Since there are many excellent reviews, I am gonna keep this short. My cat had hernia, after an examination he immediate gave me a very reasonable quote. No bs on blood test/x-ray etc. After the surgery, he called the next day to make sure my cat was doing fine; and he told me that if there is anything just call him, even at 4 am. He also thoroughly explained the procedure and answered all my questions. True that he does not have a fancy office but he has the skills/knowledge, and his love on animals --that's all I care about. My cat recovered in 10 days. I rarely write reviews but Dr. Novick is such a good vet that I feel obligated to share this to all pet owners. read more

I needed a vet right away for my elderly cat Mittens. I called a few places today and yet none of them picked up! He was the only one that did and said to come in at 5pm. I brought my ailing cat to him. Sure, it's a pretty dated looking office and he looks rough...but he was gentle with my baby and examined her. Explained to me my options and what was wrong with my cat. He helped her cross over today with such gentle hands that I have ever seen. He didn't scold me or make me feel like a bad owner (which has happened when my other cat passed away last year by his vet). He assured me that it was the right decision to put her out of her suffering. My kitty clearly showed signs of a UTI but my personal vet was booked solid all day. I called and was able to have my cat examined and treated within a couple hours. The doctor was knowledgeable and very good with her and she is healthy and happy! Price was perfectly reasonable as well. I called Dr. Novick tonight because one of my cats was having a problem urinating. Even though it was 9:30 p.m., the phone was answered promptly and I spoke directly with the vet. I brought both cats in. One was diagnosed with a UTI and the other was in perfect health. I've had many bad experiences with vets but I think I found a winner in Dr. Novick. He is open late at night, displayed kindness and patience in the face of my worry and *there was no waiting*. I agree with the reviewer that he doesn't nickel and dime. I never Yelp but when you meet a vet as kind, knowledgable and readily available as Dr. Novick, you should let everyone know. I called him on Mother's Day, around 4:30 PM, about my cat having a urinary tract blockage. He immediately took him in and performed surgery that early evening. His demeanor is that of a friend and not a stuffy veterinarian, of say Animal Kind. He is so thorough to explain the issues and makes sure you understand them. I feel a little bad giving a 1 star while everyone is giving 5 stars but I am basing it from my experience. My dog got very sick over night and we were trying to find a Vet that was open early. We called this Vet & he said to bring her in. (Mind you the phone conversation was hard....Maybe its the way he talks but he sounded a little out of it -- drunk) After hanging up I tried to look for other Vets that were open because my instincts said not to go there. It was hot & stuffy in there. It was dirty. No clean place to sit. Papers & garbage every where. It looked VERY old & looked like it was not cleaned in a very long time. The Vet appearance - 1 star. He talked like he was under something. He looked like he had a pink eye. He dressed in old sweats & beat up T-Shirt. Really? I mean, shouldn't you look put together & look presentable? He started to take the info on a regular piece of paper (he looked for it in a cabinet for few minutes) It looked so dirty, I was holding my dog in my hands (who started to bleed) and I just turned to my husband & we both made a decision to leave. I cannot give a rating based on the Vet seeing my dog but there was no way I would let my dog near him. Maybe it was his day off. Or not. I don't know. But I would never, ever go back there. I asked the Vet if he was that professional to take all the info that way? He said yes. we said, thank you but no thank you & we left. We walked out, we yelped again and we found a Vet right on 4th Ave. Park Slope Veterinary Center. We just walked fast hoping they were open, hoping someone was there. Thank God they just opened up & a Vet was there. Clean & professional office with professional receptionist & vet. I knew then, that we made the right decision. read more

Took us in on a Sunday with a few hours notice. Very thorough in exam. Reassured us that the dog had minor stomach issues and prescribed treatment. We plan on making him our full time vet. read more

Just stopped by Dr. Novack's office today for the first time. He was very attentive to our boy and gentle with him and took his time explaining things to us. The office is unloved but don't let that scare you off. He keeps everything very clean, as evidenced by the 20 cleaning bottles I saw on one counter, and all equipment looked perhaps old but spotless. While no vet is 'cheap', I didn't feel we were overcharged - my mom said it's the same price for her to go to her vet in Colorado. He also was quick to see Rusty unlike other nearby vets which would have made us wait at least a week. We'll definitely be back to him! read more
