a table with pies on it

Brookside Farms made the pies for our wedding and they were delicious. Kristin was extremely wonderful to work with and you could tell our pies were made with love. We had three yummy flavors Blueberry (my husbands favorite), Triple Berry (my favorite) and Apple (my grandma's favorite). We are so grateful to Kristin and Brookside Farms for making our Wedding dessert so memorable!

We came here to pick blueberries for the morning. We picked about 11lb in an hour and a half and only cost $15! This is a nice place to bring your family with an assortment of sweets and homemade goods as well as a small restaurant.

    U-pick blueberries!

That was when S had a great idea- go pick strawberries! U-Pick fruit places are everywhere around here, and we've both got good memories of heading to Fritz's U-Pick out near Gobles when we were younger. So a quick search on Yelp turned up this place, and it was actually convenient to get to- it was on the way back from Reits. Pulling in, we were greeted with a field full of cars, and a massive strawberry field- with lots of other people here! The way it works is rather simple- you get a big container and a few little ones, and you go up and down the rows of strawberry plants looking for ripe red berries to pick while avoiding the rotten ones, the green ones, and the damaged ones. When you've picked enough (whether because your carrier is full or your back says "no more" doesn't matter), you carry the strawberries up to the hut where they're weighed and you pay for them. Then you take them to your vehicle and go on your way. It's a lot of fun, and my niece had a blast helping us dig for yummy fruit, and spending some time outside instead of watching television all day is always good. There are a few caveats- this is physical activity, so be prepared to get down and dirty. The majority of the berries are deep under the leaves, so you might have to kneel or sit in the moist dirt. Wear stuff you don't mind getting dirty. There are bees about- just give them space if you have to. It also gets pretty hot, so take precautions on sunny days! The berries here won't be as big, as uniform in flavor or in color as the ones you find at the Wal-Mart/Meijer's/local grocery. If you're looking for strawberries just to eat, be aware that you might get some sour ones- but if you're going to do things like make jelly or jam, make some strawberry pie or shortcake, or whatever, this place will suit your needs perfectly! If you don't feel like picking them yourself, you can buy them for about three bucks and change a pound (u-pick are about two bucks a pound). This is a great place to spend a few hours! We'll be back again!

First: If they have pear cider available, GET IT. It is truly, honestly extraordinary. We went through a few gallons this year, and each drop seems to be nectar of the gods. They are closed for winter, obviously. But when they reopen in spring, here's what to expect: * Enormous tubs of whatever is in season, parked right out front of their doors * Inside shopping for things that need refrigeration (cider!), including lovely bags of spring greens that we always get, and veggies that don't need to be out in the open air * Sort of odd parking. The handicap parking is far away for me. There are two close spots to the right of the doors, and that is not a difficult walk * SO MANY KINDS of everything: apples, squash, pumpkins, well, you know Michigan harvests. You'll find all that and more here. * In the summer, LOVELY jalapenos that we stock up on and freeze for winter *Reasonable prices Tip: Weekends are busy and crowded. Mondays take a hot minute to be restocked! We go here SO often. It's a great place, with friendly people.

It's a great deal compared to what we pay at our farmers market and I found their batch to be more thoughtful- no green ones, minimal leaves, and not many I had to toss. That's a win in my book. Their blueberries were also juicy, firm, and tart. The best we've had and I believe was their Elliott variety. We also purchased their blackberries, the best purple plums we've ever had, some small yellow plums, and two jars of Queens jam for gifting (which we were told is loved by them!). Back to those plums though...do not skip! All in all the price was fair and wound up to about $31. We would definitely stop again on the way up from Chicago if we're early enough but definitely on the way back from metro Detroit. The staff was also helpful in choosing the best fruits. We were not let down!
