The brookside deli is inside the gas station. As you walk in you turn left and there is this cute little deli. The ambiance is very open and easygoing. I ordered the chili verde Mac and cheese. The service was very nice and accommodating. I got the last of it and they made sure I got it all. When I arrived home I served it and it was still warm. The first bite was a burst of flavors. You can really taste the spices and the chiles in the sauce. The meat was super tender and full of flavor. The pasta was a little over cooked but it was one of the best Mac and cheese I have had in a long time. You should definitely try it. Make sure to get there before noon they will sell out. I came in earlier a little past breakfast time and asked the deli person if I could still order a breakfast burrito. I eat vegan but I've been cheating this week because of Thanksgiving, so I really gotta get my breakfast meals in before I return to normal eating patterns on Monday. He was kind enough to agree to make me the Carne Asada Burrito. Honestly, it wasn't bad but it wasn't really that great either. I think the main problem was the lack of flavor, the lack of meat, and the tortilla was way undercooked and basically raw. What saved this experience from getting a rare 3-star or below rating from me was the people. They were all super pleasant and kind, and they had smiles on their face which for me goes a long way. I don't think I'll come back, but I definitely wouldn't caution people against going here either. Been here a few times. Mostly just for lottery tickets but this time I was running on fumes in my car and needed gas and this was my only option for the way I was going. Sheez I guessed I should of thought it out a little better. The gas here was at least .30 a gallon more than down the road so paying for the convenience of having them on this corner was a steep price to pay. This is definitely the one stop shopping location that's one of Bakersfield''s best kept secrets. From the outside, it looks like your standard gas station/mini-mart combo, but once you step inside, it's a whole lot more! For those few Bakersfield people who have recently moved here or spent their entire lives under a rock and don't know about Smith's Bakery, it's well known for its iced cookies and its champagne cakes. I am a huge fan of the champagne cakes, which are covered with prominent flakes of what I believe to be white chocolate. I don't know what makes them so moist and flavorful, but they sure are. The cookies I am of two minds about. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy them, but the way the locals go on you'd think they were god's gift to cookie making - not sure they're THAT SPECTACULAR, but they are good. They also have a full-service deli in the back that makes a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and side salads. The deli will make your sandwich to order and they are really good and the portions are large. They also have lots of delicious side salads to choose from. The big bonus is there is a Smiths Bakery inside the market and you can also buy gas. Good food and bakery items and great sandwiches and a mini market all rolled into one. What an unfortunate experience. My wife and I would get a couple of take out burgers every few months. We live less than a mile from the restuarant/ gas station and have frequinted the store and restuarant for the past several years. I phoned in my order and the young man who took my call was having a hard time understanding my order. Odd....two cheese burgers ans a small fry to go. I was told 10 minutes. I showed up in 15 minutes and wateched the person closing up the burgers in their containers and noticed they both had tomoatoe on them after saying at least three times "NO TOMATOE on either buger". I was greated by the young man who had taken my order and was wrapping up our food. "Hey buddy, you the phone order?" I'm 50 years old and never met this person. Buddy? Really? The staff that used to work there was professional (for a deli), friendly and always confirmed my order before putting in the bag. This young man was none of those. Like I said I live near by and went straight home. The burgers were cold, obviouly not fresh, and the cheese was cold as well. I guess the good thing is we didn't have to wait to eat any of the food, including the fires because it was all cold. Carl's Jr. is in the same shopping center as this place and the food is always fresh and warm and the staff is always friendly......for about half the cost. I remember this place when it was "the" place to get a sandwich. I got some food recently and it was ok. Tuna melt was tasty, a pastrami with cole slaw inside; interesting. I am wondering how this establishment got an A on their health inspection. The restroom was nasty. The lock on the door is one you'd use for a fence, the vents are covered with fuzz, graffiti is on the ceiling. I started wondering about the cafe and the kitchen. I often come to Brookside knowing I will be walking into a clean environment, with friendly welcoming staff and so much goods to choose from. I've only eaten at the Deli twice, their chorizo breakfast burritos are amazing (ask for extra salsa) I would love to try more of their menu! I love their alcohol section, they have SO much to choose from, with local brews as well. I love that they support other businesses here in town. This serves as the deli/market to the attached Shell Gas Station. Clean, well organized with a single, neat and clean restroom. I haven't yet tried the deli - however, steer clear of the Bakery - Smith's I believe is the name. They seem to use the exact same dough for everything from their donuts to their cookies; the cookie frosting tasted like the paste they give kids in pre-school (yeah, I tried it once when I was a kid, so I KNOW what that mess tastes like!). I know a good sandwich and therefore I know Brookside. This place has so much going for it, I will start with what I think is the best, their sandwiches. They have your average choices such as: Roast Beef, Pastrami (hot or cold), Turkey Breast, Smoked Turkey, Ham, Veggie but it's the choices of bread and condiments that make them outstanding. I usually go for a Smoked Turkey with avocado and sprouts on a soft french roll. Everything is high quality and always taste very fresh. If you're there for breakfast and you don't have any cardiac problems run up to the counter and ask for an order biscuits and gravy. Then, wash that down with some of the many coffees they have to offer. I wish I could say I've had other breakfast items but I don't go there often for breakfast and I've always stuck with the biscuits and gravy, I suppose it appeals to the redneck in me. I'm not done, sit back down. On top of that you can also find Dewar's ice cream and chews as well of some of Smith's Bakery's famous cookies, doughnuts and cakes. I have never actually tried the deli here. I have had smiths bakery items, which are delicious because it's from smiths. The only thing is they sell out super fast, so go early. I do use the convenient store part of brookside often. The cashiers are always super friendly and vaguely remember who you are. I'll stop here for gasoline once in awhile and Smith's bakery more than once in awhile. Just about everything at Smith's is above average. Nothing is exceptional except maybe the champagne cake. I've never seen champagne cake here though. I believe you have to special order it because I've only seen this cake at parties. The market itself is small for the convenience store portion, but they have all the things one looks for at a gas station mart. I've never tried the deli, but they are normally busy when I look over there. They also have tables there for dining. Review for the Deli only: I swung in today for lunch and saw that they added a bunch if new items to their menu. So many items that I had to ask the lady at the counter for a recommendation. She suggested the NY Pastrami sandwich. WOW- I'm glad she recommended it. Awesome pastrami sandwich with (what looked and tasted like) homemade coleslaw and thousand island dressing on a white hoagie roll. It's not a NY deli-style stack of pastrami for sure, but it was just perfect for lunch. I've had a couple of their other sandwiches, wraps, paninis and burgers before. They have always been top notch and a good value for the price. This place has really gone down hill. Not sure if they changed owners managers or just employees. But nobody seems to care to order anything when they run out. Nobody stocks the coolers they just pile everything up in the beer cave so you have to go digging around for it. Store is always a mess. Brookside deli is pretty good for the price but the facility itself is falling fast. Dirty parking lot around the gas pumps and in the morning the pumps take FOREVER to pump gas. Kinda tough when im tryn to get to work. I used to love comn here but now it reminds me of a trashy LA gas staion as far as appearence goes. I've always enjoyed getting breakfast here at Brook Side deli, besides two days ago when I walked in with two friends to get some breakfast to take home. We walked in and were immediately harassed by one of the workers named Shelby, behind the counter. We were called "ugly little bitches" and we're refused service. One of the other workers Ashley, sat and laughed the whole time. To me, this is very unprofessional and if I had my own business, I would not want people like this representing me. After being harassed and refused service, my friends and I asked to speak to a manager and were refused that as well. My son and I work close by. many times on payday Friday we find ourselves in here. Usually I order pastrami sandwiches, We have also had the fish & chips. The sandwiches are very small, we would have no problem eating two sandwiches each. It is a clean place, with nice people running the counter. This place gets crowded and with other businesses (Smiths, the Gas Station, and the Deli) sometimes there is no parking. I will come back, I just won't come too hungry. read more
