So after three different people telling me about brother benno's one being an agency I finally reached out to them. And if I do say so myself just by the phone conversation I had with Abby I am certain I've been ignoring God when he was directing me to them the whole time just everything that I am going through with my family and with my experiences and what I could in return or as well offer their Foundation due to me having a LLC with the mission to homeless Outreach CPR training educating on opioid reversal strategies I believe they will be a good partner as well for me once I'm On My Feet I am sending this review to just shout out Abby kudos to the 10th power Times a zillion and numbers off the chart!!!! I can tell when someone likes their job and when they don't I should have said I can tell when someone likes what they do and when they don't and I'll tell you I felt The Vibes of this girl having these qualities with no effort like it was second nature for her she was on point she understood she was not snobby nor short just empathetic understanding sincere informative I appreciate whoever hired this girl good eye. In 2025, I lost everything. Brother Benno's Food Bank is the best in San Diego -- not just because of the food, but because of the people. The breakfasts and sack lunches kept me going when I had nothing. Blankets and tents help people survive cold nights. That support carried me through the hardest days. Alex, Darryl, and Melyssa each played a meaningful role in helping me and my family. Alex treated me with dignity and patience when I was homeless after domestic violence and a fire, and helped me rebuild through housing navigation and rental assistance. Darryl was a huge part of the 2024 rental assistance that helped both me and my son's father both keep our homes, protecting our child during an unstable time. Melyssa at Alpha Project brought compassion and steady support when it mattered most. Homelessness has changed. I saw grandmas and grandpas out there --in fact the elderly are incredibly vulnerable and make up highest percentage of new homelessness -- and this organization meets people with real humanity. Manager said she does care that item is sold brand new for less. She insists her pricing person checks the website and is correct. This tub is 9$ all day at Costco, home depot and lowes. All these items are donated free and their prices are sooo high its nothing but a cash grab and greed. read more

This place is awesome. They do a lot to help houseless folks. They have showers, a wellness bus so you can seek medical attention, and more. They try to help people get back on their feet and feel good, and it really shows how much they care. read more

Unfortunately, I'm having to update this review as I dont see myself being able to utilize the services of Brother Bennos any longer. First, the services are good and worthwhile. And, the majority of the staff and volunteers are helpful and friendly. The main issue is.....it is not a safe place for people and their property. Brother Bennos does deal with the low to no income population and most are very kind people. However, Brother Bennos does attract riff-raff. It attracts unrespectable people who will beat you up at night ( if you are on the street), start fights with you at the center in the morning while you are waiting for breakfast and damage your property while you may be inside eating. I have much love and respect for the ones who operate Brother Bennos. But, this situation is out of control. read more

I am long amiss doing this. Sometime EARLIER this year I needed extensive emergency financial help for my rent. I was assigned a Social and Caseworker who worked diligently with DARELL AT BROTHER BENNOS who's the Financial Consultant as well as Caseworker and within a few days DARELL got me almost $4,00.00 in two separate checks from The Catholic Charities and my Rent was paid in full. GOD IS GOOD AND I'M SO GRATEFUL AND THANKFUL THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WHO CARE AND WORK HARD TO HELP THOSE OF US WHO ARE IN CRISIS. read more

What a bunch of ungrateful ignorant slobs. I believe the homeless problem can be solved but it takes a combination of good people who want to help and good people who accept the help We have a couch and love seat we want to replace. Called brother Benno's to see if they wanted the item to either give away or sell at the store. Scheduled a time and two what I describe as " questionable" men arrive. Both entered my home and one guy actually jumps on the couch and stats the springs are broken so they will not take it. Ok. So I ask him why? It's great furniture for people down on their luck or a young couple starting out. "No, we only accept quality items". Needless to say I was taken back. I use to really respect brother bennos until I myself became homeless with my 4 kids. With absolutely nowhere to go. I went to brother bennos and was referred to a lady by Mary in the rental assistance and her supervisor Dennis. i was told to come in 3 days after and until then I would be able to speak to Mary over the phone, I spoke to Mary, an elderly woman who works for Brother Bennos. She made me promises while I pleaded and cried to her. She said that she would speak to Dennis she didn't want to see me and my kids in the streets. I made an appointment with her after 5/31/2021 she didn't work on Memorial Day. my kids and myself went to my appointment at brothwr bennos today and I was BELITTLED IN FRONT OF BROTHER BENNOS IN FRONT OF MY CHILDREN. By Mary, she asked me what type of person doesnt work and how could I pay rent and she told me to go to the welfare office she can only help me with 3 days in a hotel and I said please will you help us with the 3 days, she said to me that because I was federally helped that brother bennos is a nonprofit organization and she couldn't help me. I felt like I was literally standing in front of jackyle and Hyde. Her demeanor was rude and discomforting she was speaking to me as if I were trash! I was embarrassed and ashamed to say the very least. people were standing around listening to how this lady was speaking to me while my 5 year old daughter was saying I'm thirsty mommy mommy please let's go. My 16 year old daughters face was bright red and she was so embarrassed, how can someone that works with and for people to help them be so cold Hearted? Mary told me they would help us get into a home moving assistance and help with a deposit while we spoke over the phone but face to face she was a completely different tone. non profit organizations help the community. My 4 kids and myself were literally turned away today by Mary and I called to speak to Dennis and left a message to please help us so that my kids aren't on the street and nowhere to shower or go to the bathroom, i have a disabled daughter and I am disheartened and in misbelief how we were treated like dirty dogs today by Mary and never received a call back from Dennis. I'm overwhelmed with sadness, I'm sober, I didn't get evicted I have a house in 15 days and have a plan in place. but I needed help so bad I pleaded. I wish these people had the correct supervision and training.Mary was so rude I have never in my life been treated so low and horrible. i have donated so much to brother bennos and I really believed in this place. I know that they do help a lot of people I guards me and my kids obviously fell through the cracks.
