The menu features traditional Bavarian fare, and we started with the Bier Snack Platter, an appetizer board that came with a warm pretzel, braunschweiger (venison pate), salami, obatzda (Brie, Pilsner, and cream cheese spread), spicy peanuts, and pickled egg/veggies. The soft pretzel wasn't particularly authentic and lacked a chewy texture, but I was a fan of the slightly funky, creamy venison braunschweiger. From the selection of sausages, we tried the weisswurst (a white veal and pork sausage), a duck with Vermont cheese sausage, and a smoked Montana venison sausage. My favorite was definitely the non-traditional duck with cheese, which had a nice meaty flavor and unctuousness from the cheese. Finally, we had the Jägerschnitzel, a pan-fried pork cutlet topped with a wild mushroom cream sauce, and served with sides of sauerkraut, rotkohl (sweet braised red cabbage), and spätzle (egg noodles). My favorite side was the spätzle, which had been lightly pan-fried and had a nice caramelized, crispy texture. Overall, the food here was all decent, though most of the items weren't particularly fresh tasting or authentic. I wanted to like Brotzeit. It was my first visit, and I was genuinely looking forward to trying the food. Unfortunately, the experience was frustrating from start to finish. I ordered food to go, including the meat and pickled vegetable selection, pretzels, and cheese sauce. When I got home, I realized the cheese sauce was missing. I tried calling the restaurant multiple times, but no one answered the phone, so I had to drive all the way back to retrieve an item that should have been included in the first place. That ate up about 40 minutes of my evening. When I returned, I received a small apology, but no meaningful attempt to make things right -- no comp, no offer of a dessert, no gesture of goodwill. For a first-time customer who had to make a second trip because of the restaurant's error, that felt pretty disappointing. The pretzel situation was also confusing and left a bad taste. The menu lists "add a pretzel" for $3 under the meat and pickled vegetable selection. When I ordered, the server told me the pretzel came with the meal. Based on that, I reasonably assumed that if I ordered an additional pretzel, the extra charge would be $3. Instead, I was charged both $3 and another $6.50 for the extra pretzel. When I asked about it later, I was told the pricing was structured that way for gluten-free customers, but that was not explained when I ordered. The menu and verbal explanation did not match the final charge, and it felt misleading. To make matters worse, the house-made pretzel itself was disappointing. There wasn't even any salt on it. At a German restaurant, a pretzel should be one of the easiest things to get right: salty, chewy, browned, and satisfying. This was not that. Between the missing cheese sauce, the unanswered phone, the extra drive, the confusing charges, the lack of a meaningful service recovery, and the underwhelming pretzel, this was not a good first impression. I left feeling taken advantage of rather than welcomed as a new customer. I understand mistakes happen. What matters is how a restaurant handles them. In this case, Brotzeit had a clear opportunity to turn an annoying mistake into a decent customer service moment, and they didn't. I'm actually pretty upset writing this review. I forked over a lot of money, I'm and I dont have a huge going out budget, I work caregiving and I sometimes want to give myself a treat, and this whole interaction really set my evening off poorly. I ate later than I intended which cuts into my sleep, which in turn does NOT set me up for having the energy and mental strength to do my job, and I actually feel MISLED by the menu and explanation by the waitstaff and the apology and nothing else, no acknowledgment for the time wasted, and not even a "what can I do, let's make it right." Total. Disappointment. Yeah I am NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER!! I shall NOT be giving ONE THIN DIME MORE OF MY HARD EARNED MONEY to this business!! I initially tried out this restaurant with a few coworkers and ended up taking my family and friends here. The ambiance and view is amazing. I had tried the fish and chips and the pork cutlet. Both were amazing but the pork cutlet really impressed me. It's hard to get pork right sometimes since it tends to be dry but not here. We came as always with our child to Brooklyn basin for her to ride the bike and enjoy a gorgeous sunny day. It was father's day we were seated in 10min which was great and we wanted a shaded table. Our mistress was fantastic and we loved the food. We shared a sausage platter with 6 sausages which was great for 4 adults and one 7 year old. Big lovely fresh salad, variety of sausages, spaetzle, giant pretzel and lots of red cabbage and classic saurkraut and fries was more than enough for all of us. Originally I got Käsespätzle and an Augustine's Keller beer (that I'd enjoyed at the Augustiner Keller Biergarten in München). It was fantastic and I've been wanting to return. I finally found the restaurant again and ordered the Käsespätzle, rotkohl (red cabbage) and a blond beer (sadly, they didn't have Augustine's Keller). The rotkohl was dry and had the feel that it had been cooked on a different day. The "Käsespätzle" completely different. It was more like a mac and cheese smothered in a flavorless cheese sauce, thickened with flour. I wouldn't even call it rustic. Overall, it was a pretty pleasant experience to celebrate my birthday. We had a party of 8 and they accommodated our group nicely. Overall, we thought the food was good and fresh, but we are used to larger pretzels that we had in Germany. The reason I can't give it a higher rating is that we spent close to $400 between the food and the beverages and when it came to bring it out a strudel with a scoop of ice cream... You would've thought that they would've comped the dessert for me for my birthday, but they didn't! I felt that was kind of cheap and it was two extra dollars for the ice cream scoop that was about the size of a golf ball. Our server didn't say that there was a charge for the dessert. The other thing that I'm critical about is my son-in-law park there about 20 minutes before our reservation and he caught some attitude either from the manager or the owner of the restaurant and my son-in-law didn't appreciate it... Something about parking early and making sure that you get in there to have a meal. My friends and I stopped by Brotzeit Lokal for Oakland Restaurant Week on a Wednesday evening without a reservation and we were seated right away at a table with a nice view of the harbor. My wife and I had stopped by a tad earlier than our friends so we actually had a chance to check out their happy hour menu as well. We ordered two beers, along with the fried calamari and mushroom & Swiss poutine fries. The calamari was fried to perfection and I really enjoyed the intense mushroom flavor in the gravy smothered over the fries. The fries themselves were a bit soggy, but that's to be expected when you pile on oozy, melted cheese and juicy mushrooms. After happy hour had ended, I ordered the Restaurant Week prix-fixe dinner menu, opting for the potato pancakes, the jagerschnitzel -- with spatzel on the side, the apfel struedel a la mode for dessert, and a bourbon sidecar as my included cocktail. For $45, this is a steal! This ended up being a ton of food and I'm glad my wife and I shared a single prix-fixe dinner instead of getting our own. Of the items I had tried, my favorite was the potato pancakes. The pancakes were fried to be super crispy, not excessively oily, and the sides of sour cream and apple sauce paired well. Across the board, the food was on par with other German restaurants I've visited in the Bay, including Suppenküche and Schroeder's in San Francisco. Came here for a local bar event and it's a nice scenic spot on the water. Parking lot is pretty small so I recommend uber/Lyft or getting there early to get a spot. Happy hour ends at 6 and we were able to get some pretzels and delicious/crispy calamari before it ended. Their Pliny the Elder draft beer and black lager were refreshing and hit the spot. With whipped cream and caramel sauce, it's a satisfying end to your meal. Apart from beer, they have some good ciders and a cocktail menu. Housemade lemonade, too. We have been to this restaurant several times and really enjoy it. Tonight was particularly special. The weather was beautiful. We sat outside on the outdoor eating area. We love German food and I've been to Germany and I am Polish and I'm familiar with Eastern European food. The food here does not disappoint. We had the pancakes and the German roasted pork, shank spetzal sauerkraut and a salad. If you're into German food, it is very authentic and was very well prepared. We had an amazing server who was friendly and thoughtful and intelligent and fabulous. The prices were quite reasonable and the food portions were very generous. You can sit inside with great views of the water, or outside on their patio. I sat outside. It's April, so it gets cool outside starting in the early afternoon. No heaters, but a light jacket will do. The service was great. A friendly waitress that took good care of me. The schweinshaxe was delicious. Crispy skin and tender meat. Served with some spaetzel and greens on the side. I also got a small side of the mushroom gravy, for dipping. The gravy was so good! Small portion, but delicious. I washed it down with a Hefeweizen. Repeat customer since 2019. My go-to order includes a calamari appetizer and a sausage platter with andouille and their special game, paired with a glass Lindemans Framboise. The entree is consistently great, with some of the best executions of spaetzle and andouille in my experience. Their special game is a mixed bag, being supposedly dependent on hunting season. Elk and wild boar are my favorites, while presented white meat options (like pheasant) have me choosing a wurzige instead. On the fish and chips, the fish was not too bad, the fries were ice cold, and the coleslaw was so bland I couldn't even eat it. And they don't put salt on the table. Correction, they do put salt on the table, but if you're sharing with all these other people, you can't get at it. Good grief. And yeah, shared tables. On the potato pancakes, they were heavy, mushy, not crispy, and the apple sauce like concoction had no flavor. We didn't eat it. Server chose not to notice that we failed to eat the pancakes or the chips and coleslaw and didn't ask about it. A couple of guys came and sat at our table and abandoned ship because they were out of pretzels. Kind of a staple in a place like this one would think. Absolutely delicious, incredibly hearty brunch. Dropped by on a Sunday afternoon and sat inside at a table facing the water, against the windows. It was very rainy that afternoon, so we had a great view of the steely water and sky. We went with the bier snack platter to start ($18), and I got the schnitzel stack ($18) with a side of spatzle ($5; this wasn't on the menu, but the waitress was happy to give me a side of it when I asked if that was possible). My husband got the Brotzeit sausage platter ($21). He went with the wurzige and special game sausages; the game that day was venison. I've been thinking about my schnitzel stack since I had it and desperately wanting another. It was so delicious and extremely generous in size. That mushroom gravy was wonderful, and the schnitzel was juicy and tender. The fried egg on top helped bring it all together with the runny yolk. I tried my husband's platter and thought both sausages were delicious. I'd never had venison before and thought it was great, not too gamey. The only thing I wasn't too big on was the bier snack platter. While the pretzel was soft and good, I didn't care for the cheese spread that came with it and felt beer cheese would've been a better pairing. The spicy peanuts were good, but this is really a better option for someone who loves pickles and pickled foods (which I don't). Overall, this was a very pleasant meal and we walked away stuffed. The food was nothing to write home about. The sausage was a tad more greasy and otherwise average. The bretzel was good but not sure the obadzta spread (almost like cream cheese) added much. They originally didn't realize we never got our bretzel, so it came out afterward, and the wrong dish was dropped off; it had a pretzel on top so after taking a bite the server took the dish away (unclear if they just put a new pretzel on it and gave it to the correct table)... The location is a bit odd since you are next to a hotel and need to drive through the homewood suites hotel parking lot to get there (just go straight back). Service was okay. Came here Sunday afternoon with zero expectations and found that I really enjoyed the experience. The location is a bit weird to find (you have to drive through the Homewood suites parking area), but you're rewarded with a nice view of the docks and a cozy little pub with quality food. We got the hammock (not on the menu for brunch, but you can ask for it and they'll accommodate if they aren't too busy) and the sausage plate. I saw that MICHILIN guide reviewed this place somi gave it a go on DoorDash. It was DISGUSTUNG. The pork was half cooked, not crunching, nonexistent breading. The Schweinshaxe plate stands out, large enough to feed two people. Specials, game sausage, Schneider Weisse - we are now regulars here. I always enjoy going to this place and it never disappoints me. I brought a couple friends with me who's never been here so I sure hope everything was good. It was a busy day but we were able to get the last outside table. The waitress greeted us right away so we ordered some drinks. Some nice mimosas and a couple german beers, all very tasty. We then ordered the German pancakes to start and they came out right away. They tasted great and were cooked perfect. For our entrees we ordered the the Lokal wurst (brats) which came with fries, the eggs benedict, the schnitzel stack, and Wurzige and bratwurst sausages on the side. The sausages tasted great, good flavor, and the wurzige was not that spicy.The eggs benedict was cooked prefect and the flavor on the sauce was spot on great. The schnitzel was also cooked perfectly and very flaky which was good. There was plenty of food to eat. The service was great as it always is. read more
