He loved the Old Fashion and my drink was the Verdant daiquiri, very heavy in the lime-wouldn't order again I don't think. Bubbles were a nice pour which I appreciated. To start, we got the Jalapeno Popper Arancini which were amazing, I loved the kick from the peppers. He got the Chicken Tandoori and was impressed, nice blend of spices and refreshing flavors. My Steak & Frites was just perfect. The truffle parm fries are the perfect crisp. To celebrate, we enjoyed the Dirt Cake Tart with gummy worms. How fun to feel young again! One of my favorites in the City Market in Kansas City. Each time the food, wine , service and ambience is fantastic. Today on a Monday before going to the Nelson Museum my cousin and I had lunch at Brown and Loe outdoors. This was her first time and she loved it. Started with a bottle of 'Prost' Mosel Riesling, crisp and refreshing then split the Ham and Pear sandwich of smoked pit ham, pork belly, sliced pear with herbed aioli on a pressed ciabatta, nice and crispy. A group of Argentina soccer fans dressed in their blue and white colors sang and danced for all of our entertainment. It was amusing. read more

Our friends who have lived in Kansas City for years suggested we go to Brown & Loe for dinner before seeing Cats at MTH (the show was fantastic! Best version I've seen). So I made a reservation. We arrived at 5:15 for our reservation and were seated immediately in Chloe's section. She was fantastic from start to finish. You may wish to ask for her because she is just a fantastic person and competent and capable server. We started out with appetizers. My friends ordered the calamari. My wife loves that, but I don't so she was happy to have some. I ordered half a dozen blue point oysters on the half shelf. They were very good. I tried a piece of a calamari and to my surprise, enjoyed it. It was not overcooked or over breaded like most I have had in the Midwest. My wife got the Taos salad with chicken she enjoyed very much! I was fortunate enough to snag a bite or two from her and it was truly excellent. My buddy shared a bite of the Osso Bucco and it was superb!! I ordered the meatloaf with goat cheese mashed potatoes, and green beans. The meatloaf also had a nice pan gravy and French onions. Truly a delight. We got a nice bottle of sparkling rosé for the table, which was delicious. The only snag of the whole evening was waiting for them to chill the wine. I'm not sure why they would offer sparkling wines and not have them chilled prior. A minor and annoyance, but not enough to deduct a star from this fabulous establishment. I have only been to this place once before, and that was during a restaurant week, so the menu was limited. The Ambience: This is down by the RiverMarket. The location is a cool old bank and has a classic cafe feel. We opted to sit inside since there was a wait for the patio, and we were seated quickly. The Service: The wait staff was helpful with menu choices and extremely friendly. Which was helpful since the menu was overwhelming, and not in a bad way; everything sounded amazing, so it was hard to choose. The Food: I had a Guinness as we had stopped in for some lunch during Irish Fest. My buddy, of course, had the Irish coffee! Our dishes were so very good! I had the short rib hash with egg on top. It was amazing. My buddy got the Chorizo Bierock, which was also a very solid choice! To the Restaurant: Good job all around! I'll be bringing more friends and more business your way!!! read more

It's been a minute since I wandered down to the River Market, but when I rolled through this past Tuesday to meet a friend for lunch at Brown & Loe, the place was buzzing. Boutiques, bars, food markets, new restaurants, old standbys--it felt like the whole neighborhood had chugged a double espresso. People everywhere, in the best way. Brown & Loe held up its end of the deal, too. I kept it classic with the Honey Mustard Chicken Sandwich, and wow--this was no ordinary sandwich. We're talking a perfectly cooked chicken breast (not the sad, dry kind), with just the right crispy sear, melty cheddar, and honey mustard that hit the sweet-and-tangy jackpot. Honestly, it was so good it might trick me into becoming a "lunch downtown" person again. We had a reservation and it was packed in there so it still took about 10 minutes to get sat after we arrived. I had a nitro cold brew, which was fantastic, and the potato pancakes, which were a little bit bland and not a huge portion so I would probably order something different next time--one of my friends got the Loco moco and it was delicious. It's nice to have a more upscale spot in the river market but a little too pricey to be a regular spot for me. read more

I live in Dallas and my boyfriend lives in Kansas. So I'm in Kansas A LOT. Whenever I'm heading back home and have time before my flight, Brown & Loe is my spot. Always good and quick service, good drinks and great food. My go to items include the Loco Moco which is a house ground beef patty over coconut rice and topped with a fried egg (just like they make it Hawaii) and their Coconut Shrimp entree which is grilled shrimp, kimchi vegetables, and coconut sticky rice. We came in for a coworkers birthday. Our party of five was seated fairly quickly and our waitress was super sweet and helped us pick drinks and an appetizer. We got the pull apart hot rolls which were amazing. Covered in sorghum, topped with bagel seasoning and served with miso butter. It's a combination I never would have thought of and it's works so well. For my entree I tried the meatloaf. The meatloaf itself was moist and super flavorful. It came with goat cheese mashed potatoes which were ridiculously creamy and bacon green beans. My only complaint being the bacon could have been crispier. That being said I cleared my whole plate. For dessert I tried the key lime pie, which I loved. I wouldn't have minded if there was a little more like filling and a little less whipped topping though. Such a delicious place!! The Crimson Hugo Spritz is one of the best drinks I've ever had, absolutely delicious!! I tried both the meatloaf and the chicken fried chicken. The meatloaf is so tender that even people who don't like meatloaf would be int to it. The chicken fried chicken has a little bit of spice to the gravy, and it's fantastic. Can't beat goat cheese, mashed potatoes, and bacon, green beans. The ambience with a little bit loud for only being half full, but the aesthetic is really nice. read more

We are always looking for unique places to go and eat. While down at the River Market on Sunday we had brunch at Brown & Loe. This establishment is located in a former bank. The history of the building itself and the surrounding area adds to the quaintness. They have kept some of the original fixtures and features of the bank. The staff are friendly and helpful. They use as much local product as possible in all of their dishes. Which is another reason we enjoyed eating here. The food was excellent, the drink (Churchills breakfast) was delicious, and the food portions where generous. We love supporting local establishments with good food, fun atmospheres, and who also support local. We will be back. read more

I've had several excellent meals here before which is why I'm not giving a worse review for tonight's meal. Tonight I was swayed into the special: wild mushroom gnocchi. This was a huge miss. I think they've misplaced the salt and pepper in the kitchen. Not a single thing on the plate had flavor other than what it would have if you got it raw from the grocery store. The sun dried tomato was the strongest flavor of the dish if that's any indication of the lack of flavor. Then there's the sauce...or rather soup. A flavorless soup who's only job was to add moisture to the dish, if only it could stick to anything. I've had vegetable broths with more flavor than whatever liquid this is supposed to be. I was planning on having a dessert tonight (the key lime pie sounds delightful), but I've been ruined by this meal. read more

Yes to Gluten Free Menu!! I had such a great experience at Brown & Low in the City Market and will definitely be coming back! Parking in that area can sometimes be a challenge, but we didn't have any trouble on a Tuesday night. The hostess was warm and welcoming, and our waitress was so attentive. It took a little bit of time to get our order in, but honestly, we were deep in conversation, so I think she was just giving us space. The drinks were fun to try--my Bonal cocktail was the waitress recommendation, and was ok for me (I added a little ice to make it cooler), the house Old Fashioned was excellent, and the vodka coconut drink was a big hit at our table. Now, the food... They have a dedicated gluten-free menu, which already made them a winner in my book!! I'm not celiac, but as someone who is gluten intolerant, I really appreciated seeing notes that even specified "celiac friendly." That kind of thoughtfulness is rare and incredibly helpful. I originally wanted to try the Cuban sandwich until I realized it included brisket (no beef in my Cuban sandwich, please!). Instead, I chose the Pork Flat Iron and wow--what a dish! Everything but the rice was absolute perfection. The pork was cooked perfectly, and the mojo brine was bursting with flavor. I also loved the black bean and corn salad with crema. Rice was ok. As a Caribbean girl, I'm often hesitant to order Cuban-inspired dishes at American restaurants, but this one did not disappoint. The plantains were cooked perfectly too! I just wish the menu had mentioned they were sweet plantains, because I was expecting green, but they were still delicious. The rest of the table ordered the salmon and the French dip, Brussels and truffle fries and everyone loved their meals as well. We were too full to try dessert this time, but I already have my eye on that gluten-free brunch menu for my next visit. I'm so excited to come back and explore more of their options! Parking on the weekends can be tricky, so get there with some time to spare to find parking. Service is always lovely, and they have daily specials. Came here tonight for my husbands birthday dinner! We found the vibe a little odd as all the lights were on inside even though it was evening--it was super bright. He loved his drink (manhattan). I got the clover club--it was tart and refreshing with a great egg white! I did find it pretty sour but still enjoyed overall. Our food was... okay. The carbonara has an interesting very strong bacon flavor to it, and my salmon was unfortunately a little cold. All that said, the portions and flavors were good and our waiter was super attentive. Unfortunately once we were seated and the waitress came out she informed us that the ovens were down and they were serving a very limited menu. Wait what?!? You couldn't have said something before seating us? They brought out the sheet of paper they were calling a menu and there was 6 dishes on it. Amazingly enough... they had a KC Strip on it that everyone in our group ordered. Yep we stayed... it was fairly empty.. wonder why... and we could talk easily enough so we decided to try it. Our waitress was great! What they lacked in selection they made up for in service. She really was good... amazing personality, proficient at her job, and diligent in her duties. The food came out and it was prepared correctly steaks were juicy, cooked right, and good. (To be completely honest they were good but not great. They were missing something in seasoning) However considering the circumstances everything went pretty well. My only suggestion is to let people know before you seat them that your ovens don't work. I know I know... get them seated then it is harder for them to leave... but talk about annoying . Any way I hope to come back some time when things are all working... This is a great place to go to near River Market. I went with friends in June, then I met up with another friend here in July. I will say this: in looking at the menu, I will only order the chicken sandwich. I'm not interested in anything else. Don't get me wrong. It's a GOOD chicken sandwich. But I really love when restaurants tempt me. I heard this place does brunch but I must be timing my visits wrong because there's never brunch when I'm there. This is a really fun kind of old school feeling restaurant with some old-fashioned items on the menu like pull apart hot rolls and meatloaf as well as new twists on old standards. I got the Steak Frites and the steak was perfectly done. The fries were unfortunately a bit under seasoned. I was there with three girlfriends and we liked or loved all of our food. The Keylime pie is made in house and it was one of the better ones I've had in my life. The coconut cream tart was a bit disappointing because the whipped cream wasn't sweetened and it was garnished with something that looked like blueberries but definitely wasn't blueberries lol. I had a really nice glass of Malbec and my friends had throwback drinks, cherry phosphate and chocolate phosphate which they all loved. Our server Emily was wonderful. Too much tarragon and dill in the hollandaise left all other flavors struggling to compete. Ate a few bites because it was kind of pricey at $22, but really couldn't force myself to eat anymore.
