Visited early on a Saturday, before the dinner rush, and without reservations, and we picked this place because of some positive Yelp reviews. So glad that we did. Casual attire is okay, and the interior has a great vibe overall. Kind greeter! Lauren was our server, and she was superb, guiding us through their menu and offering elite suggestions with a pleasant tone throughout. Lauren is an All-Star. Our house salad appetizer was really good, and then the amazing level surged to the table. My Salmon dish was magnificent, so flavorful and incredibly well-presented. Perfectly placed on a bed of succulent wild rice and topped with delicious vegetables. It was one of the tastiest dishes that I can remember. Finished by splitting their banana cream pie, which was so good. All in. Loved it. We will come to KC again in the Spring, and we will absolutely visit Rye Plaza again after this visit. read more

We came here for brunch. This isn't the first time we've been here or my first review but it seems my review is now missing. That's unfortunate because my first review was favorable. This one, not so much. We made a reservation and then got a phone call 12 minutes before to make sure we were coming still. We were actually parking at the time. When we walked in, there was no wait and we're seated right away. It took a minute for our waitstaff to come over and then we saw why. She was all over the restaurant. They were clearly short staffed. Felt bad for her. She came over, apologized, and took our drink orders. The adults had coffee and the younger ones had water and lemonade. Our coffee was warm. Not hot, just warm. We ordered the cinnamon roll and the goat cheese sampler. Boith were tasty. For our meals, I ordered the Rye Breakfast with over medium eggs. For those that don't know, over medium is a fine line between runny yolk and cooked all the way yolk. My eggs were basically over easy. Check the picture. It was yolk all through the plate. My gravy was cold and the biscuit was hard as a rock. The only thing I ate was the bacon from my meal. My hash brown tasted like oil and was hard and cold. My kids didn't like their pancakes. The oldest said it was too doughy and was cold. I also asked for no oranges on top but, they both had oranges. The youngest one just didn't eat it at all after one bite. Hubs meal was also cold. Ninety-percent of my visits are for breakfast/brunch. My wife and I used to wake up on a weekend and head to Rye arriving around the same time it opened. The timeliness almost always allowed us to get an open seat at the bar. Thats my recommendation for a party of two without a reservation. I recommend getting a reservation for table service. It's my favorite cinnamon roll in town. They're filling enough to be a meal for two. There's no fun in that that though. I like to order the hash browns too, at least. I always wanted to try the burger. I finally tried it on my most recent visit around lunch time. It was delicious. The house pickles added good flavor. This is a place where you'll want to save room for dessert or buy some pie to go. The banana cream pie is the one that keeps me coming back. read more

Delicious deviled eggs as an appetizer. Bread service for the night was corn bread muffins which were good but not great. I had a house salad with sherry vinaigrette that I loved. I had more than the apple pie but it was the only thing that I actually took a picture of. I loved the pie and had no clue I would like it because pies not my go to dessert. I think I like it because it was layers of apples with a crumble style topping versus a traditional pie crust. The caramel sauce was really good mixed in the a little ice cream. The whipped goat cheese appetizer was sneaky good, the honey and the greens that came with it made a unique flavor that kept me eating it. This dessert is offered as an appetizer and it's huge. You literally can share this with another person. I like the fact the frosting wasn't overly sweet. The cinnamon bun was warm and chewy but not doughy. Some may like it more drier but I prefer it how Rye makes it. Shrimp and grits- Nice serving size.. Grits were creamy and plenty of shrimp. Only issue for me was the sauce, it tasted more like a watered down bbq sauce. That flavor was off putting to me. Chicken fried steak- This entree can easily feed two people. The steak was fried perfectly and seasoned well. I would suggest though, use mashed potatoes that are not instant potatoes. The instant potatoes blended too much into the gravy and you couldn't tell them apart. Smoked short rib hash- This dish had so much potential but it fell short due to the blandness of the flavor. We went for lunch one day, and it was pretty dead inside, maybe 5 tables and they stuck us in the back corner right next to another table, which seemed kinda funny. Food: We got the cinnamon roll for $11. And this was a monster of a cinnamon roll. It was huge and easily shareable among 4 people. We were not warned before hand. The only thing we wished was that is was hot. It came out like warm instead. We also got the French toast and chicken. The chicken was a little dry and the meal was overall a little overcooked but it still had good flavor. We would have gotten a drink but decided $12 for a mimosa was just out of our price range. The ambiance is very casual they had the Saturday college football games on the tvs near the bar so the place is also family friendly. Definitely didn't thoroughly review the menu item's ingredients when it came to my mom ordering shrimp & grits as it has shredded pulled pork atop the grits. It was a lot. She doesn't eat pork so we removed it. We let Kate know upon one of her check-ins with us. The grits and shrimp weren't all the flavorful. It's always interesting to see how restaurants put their own flavor to traditional dishes and this was definitely unique. My French toast slices were good, the syrup & butter gave it flavor. It looked like the chicken was going to be with the lightly crisp skin, which dropped off the chicken occasionally ended up being the flavorful part of the tenders. The chicken itself was not seasoned at all. It had no flavor to it. The appetizer, fried green tomatoes were tender but the cornmeal breading was very gritty. I've had cornmeal breading before but it was not overdone like this. Our dining experience involved periods of waiting when it came to getting our check after we finished eating and receiving the receipt after providing payment. Three of us tried Rye for the first time. It was lunchtime and although we did not have a reservation we were seated at an inside table quickly We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. The recipes and seasonings were unique and delicious. Even their homemade hot sauce was fantastic. I had the Hot Honey Sausage with Braised Greens. The sausage really was spicy and it came with an egg served soft boiled with cornbread. I added the homemade hot sauce to the dish for even more heat and flavor. My friends had The Rye Breakfast and The Burnt Ends Hash. Each of them loved their dishes. We had no complaints and only praises. The service was stellar from Hostess to Server to Food Runner. My wife and I stopped in at Rye on the Saturday before Mother's Day after seeing a show at KC Rep UMKC. Alex was our server and he was amazing!! Please ask for him. We enjoyed the Beets & Berries Salad. My wife and I weren't starving, so we shared that and a 3-piece fried chicken plus some smashed potatoes. The salad was the best thing we ordered. The chicken was pretty good. The breading was thin and tasty. The hot sauce they brought was spectacular!! I had a Coors Banquet draft (yay for them having that!) and my wife enjoyed a nice Chardonnay. We were stuffed but I got a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie to take home. It was good but the chocolate chip cookie we got my wife was maybe the best I've ever had. Honestly, we didn't love the chicken, but Rye is so good we will be back. We enjoy both locations but Leawood is easier parking of course. I love that this location has a turntable and reel-to-reel player. Great touch inside. The bartender was kind enough to steer us clear of the draft beer, as the basement machines were down and the beer was about 60 degrees, though slightly disappointing it wasn't a deal breaker. I've visited Rye on multiple occasions throughout the years and every visit has been a more than pleasant experience, the service is always impeccable and the food has constantly been good year after year (menu change after menu change). The brunch is desirable, with mimosas to enjoy and a wide variety of sweet and savory options on the menu. The happy hour is always a winner with small bites that are tasty and well prepared cocktails. And if you have a sweet tooth never skip dessert. The Country Club Plaza needs to take note and keep Rye around because the local establishments are dying out and this is a real gem of the Midwest. The fried chicken is elevated while still being homey, speaking of homey and old-fashioned (in the best way possible) the pies are some of my favorite in the city, other than my grandmas. I always patron the Rye booth at the plaza art fair and they always have good small bites to munch on while walking around the bustling fair. The bisque is buttery and oh so smooth! The chicken skin is crispy and never burned. The brownies are bodacious and melt in your mouth. Also, appetizer wise just try the hush puppies and thank me later, sometimes they are blue crab sometimes they smoked short rib, both times they are delicious. If you want something a tad lighter try the rainbow trout, it little falls apart it's so flaky and the hints of lemon are so fresh. There was plenty of seating and even options to sit at the bar as well. My boyfriend got the 14 oz KC Strip which was cooked perfectly and the sauce was a nice compliment. As a non-steak connoisseur, he personally wouldn't pay the price for the steak he had gotten. For his two sides, he got the Mac n cheese with crispy bacon and the mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were creamy but otherwise plain. The Mac n cheese itself was also pretty generic but had green bread crumbs and the bacon was a nice thick cut and good addition to the side. I tried their butternut squash cavatelli which had chicken and pieces of butternut squash in it. I loved it, there was the perfect amount of creaminess and I love the pasta type. We got the goat cheese appetizer which was also pretty good! 6 slices of bread with goat cheese and honey. It spread on nicely and tasted even better with a little bit of savory, sweet, and salty. One of the people in our party's order came out wrong (she ordered a filet mignon and she got a pork chop instead), and they took it back to the kitchen and gave her a $40 gift certificate for the mistake. Ordered the Dry Aged KC Strip steak medium rare with a side of bacon mac and cheese. And a bunch of appetizers. I think the only downside was the steak was too fatty for me, but I feel like that's something I should have expected when ordering steak. Loved the crab hushpuppies. Also loved the bacon mac and cheese. I don't know what the green stuff on top of the mac and cheese is, but it was bursting with flavor. I think they used a ton of butter or oil or something because it made me feel pretty heavy. I also don't drink alcohol, so I asked the waitress for a surprise fruity mocktail. I think they got me something with ginger ale. It was delicious, yum! i'd skip the mocktail that's on their regular menu though. Rye still has it after all these years, y'all. It's amazing to have a great LOCAL spot on the Plaza, especially as it's in a major state of flux right now. Most recently, we hit this for birthday brunch for my wife as we've found it's a way better time for the kids to tag along than a dinner might be. We had: -The famous Rye cinnamon roll, shared four ways. It's perfection, with loads of frosting and perfectly baked cinnamon dough. -Black coffee that has a great flavor + a cappuccino, dito. -The Rye Breakfast; a biscuit and small side of gravy, two eggs, a piece of bacon, piece of sausage, and the best hash brown I've had in a while. -Kids split a gigantic pancake which is crispy, buttery and tasty all the way around. -Wife had Eggs Benedict and it got rave reviews as well. Simply put, EVERYTHING was so good and the service was nice as well. Vibes were high. I've been here a bunch over the years, including dinner and it always lands well. One thing that stands out from the past, a late summer dish, their Heirloom Tomato Salad. I could've just eaten ten plates of this and called it a night. Late summer heirloom tomatoes over a yogurt cheese labneh with some crisp sweet corn to contrast. (Side note, they won't have tomatoes off season which is a great sign. No one wants those hard, whitish "tomatoes," and to me it shows their commitment to real, local produce) I made a reservation on Tock which in theory was easy enough, but it was a bit annoying that I also had to call and wait on hold to confirm my reservation, as well as confirm it again via text a day later. All in all, this spot does an amazing job without an atmosphere that "tries too hard" and it's in a perfect spot on the eastern edge of the Plaza overlooking the Nichols fountain.
