There's pros and cons to this establishment. The pros: friendly staff, beautiful location, quick call back time (we had my mother in law in hospice and was passing at 1am) called a few other mortuaries and only this location called back. The cons: the staff referred to himself as a "wetback", the Deacon was almost 30 minutes late to the burial due to a family emergency, the staff promised to give directions to the burial but failed to do so causing confusion among our guest. Our florist had trouble delivering the day of the viewing because the mortuary said no one under the name had a viewing there. I had to call the mortuary myself and then they accepted the flowers. The cost was comparable to other mortuaries not less or more. read more

I have to believe that we ended up at Brown Colonial due to divine intervention. After experiencing a devastating loss in my family, I began calling funeral homes off of a list we got from the hospital. Brown Colonial was the quickest to respond. Within an hour I had a rough estimate for services and was told they could accommodate a service that week if that's what we wanted. At about the same time, an acquaintance of my husband's recommended we work with Big Ralph. We took it as a sign and went for it! I explained to Ralph that the side of my family that had just experienced the loss was of limited means and we would be reaching out to charitable organizations for financial assistance. Ralph assured me that they could absolutely work with that. As the charitable donations started coming in, we didn't need to leave a deposit; that was such a blessing! I cannot express my gratitude to Ralph and Brown Colonial for the service and support they provided. Ralph was extremely patient, answered our countless questions, was gracious when we made changes and he provided invaluable advice. There wasn't a single time that we needed something and he wasn't available in a timely manner or he didn't come through. Do NOT go here. I was here last week and my experience was awful. I didn't experience any compassion from the staff and their prices are way too high. Furthermore, the premises of the funeral home were filthy. The restrooms had no toilet paper and poop smears inside, the sinks were full of hair and the mirrors smudged everywhere. Trash all over the chapel floor. There wasn't even a service on this day so I don't understand how they could've left it like this and even provided a tour. You'd think this company would be ashamed of this type of conduct but when I brought it up to the manager, he got defensive. My recommendation is to go somewhere that respects end of life services. read more

Losing a loved on is never easy especially when all the arrangements have yet to be made. Fortunately, cousins were able to direct us to a family mortuary in our time of need. We went in to the office and talked to Ralph and he helped us get all the arrangements situated (for about $3,000 less than most Orange County mortuaries). From the time we decided to utilize Brown Colonial's services to the time of Grandpa's service we had been in contact with the mortuary several times and were very pleased with communication from the start. We received a text message letting us know when they had picked up our grandfather and that they were bringing him to the mortuary. The day of the service we were provided with use of the chapel, a wake area for family to gather, prayer cards, and AV aids (screen and hook up for laptop) for the slide show, as well as access to their wonderful, caring, helpful staff. Amparo and Celeste did a wonderful job making sure we had access to everything we needed the day of the service. They were so kind and compassionate to our entire family and saw us through the entire process. Our mother died on March 13th, just before all the restrictions came down regarding the Coronavirus pandemic. All plans went well with Brown Mortuary, until I had a few problems getting a certified check for the company. Our family fully intended to make our payment, and we had the money in our personal funds. With banks changing how they run their business due to the virus; such as new adjusted hours, number of people In the bank, closing during the weekend, etc. When I called to see if Brown Mortuary would except a personal check, I then felt the compassion had gone out the door. I found the person to be rude and now it truly was a business and all about the money. I did get a certified check, Brien was paid in full. Please don't forget, that loved ones are still hurting, and I know you run a business...but the compassion needs to remain even through the payment process. read more

BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE! I have recently lost my grandfather this past month and with covid restrictions it makes it harder for my family to mourn as a whole. With restrictions with how many people can come in we thought we would be DOOMED. However, the staff of Brown Colonial Mortuary accommodated us with zoom so that our relatives who could not come in can still participate . Even when some of my more aggressive family members attacked them over the guest limit the staff remained calm and incredibly professional the entire time. Like others have stated obviously no one wants to write these types of reviews but it needs to be stated. My father passed away unexpectedly in the middle of the night, he made no prior arrangements and contrary to belief i always thought that the police/ambulance/corners office picks up the body. Not always. the police officer recommended i call brown to have them pick up my fathers body. Ralph picked up 3am and sent someone for him. They treated his body with respect. we then made an appointment to meet with Ralph, Its obvious he has been doing this a long time and is good at what he does. He is accustom to different traditions for services and made the process unbelievably easy. If you are unsure of where to go give them a call, they will walk you through the process, paperwork etc. Actually they do everything for you. just a couple questions and everything is handled. My mother passed away and I had no idea how this stuff worked. Hospital called me and told me I had four hours because they didn't have a fridge for bodies and for me to find a mortuary . They gave me numbers to call and everybody that I called seemed cold and wanted money right away. I didn't have any. She had insurance but I didn't know how long that would take .Most mortuaries didn't care. They needed me to sign and they wanted $5000. Pretty daunting after you just found out your mother died. It was Saturday night I wasn't able to reach anybody. But that's when the hospital referred me too brown colonial mortuary. Ralph called me and simply said I will pick up your mom and I will call you on Monday. He was amazing. That's all I wanted to hear. He went above and beyond to make sure my husband did not have to linger in the morgue in the hospital. He was a hell of a guy, and while that traditional Catholic service didn't quite seem to suit the Chase I used to know, those eulogies at the end sure captured his spirit. I'd never been to a funeral, and it was hard to see faces I hadn't seen since high school because of something like this. The service was peaceful, although it's painful to stomach a mother's sobs from the front row like that. This mortuary is small-- about 100 seats-- but I have no base of comparison to say that it should have been bigger. The chapel was just bursting with mourners on that particular Friday morning. Terrible service we felt so unwelcome! We were grieving a loss of our niece and brought food and was told no food or drinks what's so ever due to the Covid? So how come you couldn't accommodate us and our family outside with a canopy of some sort? We had to feed our family and guests out f our truck while in the parking lot they were detailing cars! Not to mentioned they closed off one of the two bathrooms for their personal use while we had a line of people trying to use the restroom! I have never felt so uncomfortable in such a sad circumstance. We were told we could bring drinks, but never told anything about any sort of restrictions! I am appalled by the rude woman who kept hovering like a helicopter! NEVER will I use this unprofessional mortuary ever again! We are so thankful for the great staff at Brown Colonial Mortuary. My grandma's viewing was on Oct 10, 2014 and everything was great. We couldn't have asked for more during the difficult time. The staff made sure that we had everything we needed and helped us direct all the guests. There is a separate area for food/drinks and the interior is clean and spacious. Don't be put off by the exterior because the amazing, caring staff and classy interior more than makes up for it. The parking lot is a bit small, but there's plenty of street parking right there. Dealing with a death is always difficult and Ralph Rodriguez and the staff at Brown removed the stress of dealing with the details. Ralph was very thoughtful and thorough in the first meeting to begin the process. He then was timely in follow-up to any of our additional questions or requests. This was a huge help to the family and one of the things that separates good from great customer experience. Ralph even went the extra step to find a Filipino priest (thank you Father Feliz) to officiate at the ceremony. He provided some remarks in Tagalog that added that extra that made it even more special to the family.
