My father-in-law passed away last year and was buried at El Toro Memorial Park. El Toro Memorial Park gave us a list of headstone companies to select one for his marker. We contacted several of those companies and a few other ones in the area and soon we realized that this was not a trivial task. It involved selection of the marker material, size, color, cost, having the option of a photo and bi-language inscriptions and above all the design of the marker. There was a relatively large variations among the companies in terms of quality of the marker and the photo, the ability to have bi-language inscriptions and cost. Also, one or two companies had a showroom to go to and see their samples of work. Finally, we decided to go with the American Headstone Company (one of the companies on the El Toro Memorial Park list). The main reason was its high Yelp rating with very good reviews, its marker designs with high quality color photos and bi-language inscriptions, and its owner Josh Rapozo. Josh was extremely nice, friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He emailed us a large sample of his marker designs and was very helpful and patient with us. He assured us that everything could be done online via email and text and there was no need to go a showroom. And he was absolutely right. We drafted a design and emailed it to Josh with a color photo of my father-in-law. He commented on and edited the text and after a few iterations, we were all happy with the excellent final marker design. Josh was really amazing in the process of finalizing the marker design. It is noted that Josh subcontracts the photo engraving with a company that is one of the best in the business and quality of their work is extremely good. American Headstone Company was not the least expensive one, but it was competitive and reasonable compared with other quotes. Due to Covid backlog, Josh told us that this would take about 12 weeks and he completed and delivered the marker to El Toro Memorial Park in 12 weeks. He emailed us a photo of the marker before it was shipped and it was exactly as designed and looked extremely nice. We went to El Toro Memorial Park after it was installed and we all liked it very much. It was simply a beautiful marker! God Bless my father-in-law and May He RIP! After many attempts I was able to contact Josh. He said he had sent me an email and could not help me with my grandfather's headstone replacement. The email somehow never reached my email account. I had gotten pre approval from the cemetery caretaker for anyone I wanted would be allowed to work on our plot. Grandpa is at 1st Chinese Cemetery in East Los Angeles. My son, Tynan, age 17, died March 6 2017. He was riding his motorcycle and we don't know why, but he lost control and hit a telephone pole, died instantly. After the initial weeks, going to the cemetery, seeing a teeny 3x5 card to mark his grave, I needed to get the Headstone handled. I wanted all his friends, our friends, and us to have a lovely, fitting tribute to him to look at while visiting. So I took to the internet. I found a bunch of "self-serve" online forms, and kind of a weird "car salesman" type vibe kept emerging. Like really low budget, not what I wanted. I wanted a low price, but a decent representation of the life of my son, and our family. I started making phone calls. Most places were far away, and I couldn't get personalized service. I called American Headstones, and spoke to Josh, and he told me he was a graphic designer, and would be creating my stone himself. Hmmm... I was intrigued so I called back again and asked if I could come and work with him? I want this thing to be PERSONAL. I want it how I want it. (But I don't know how to design a headstone!) He agreed and I went to his office. I told him what I wanted, what I didn't, I asked his opinion on granite, which he gladly gave, and in a couple of hours we were done. We chatted back and forth to make sure everything was correct, and true to his word, in about 5 weeks we had our headstone in place at El Toro Cemetery. On my last day in town, a last-minute cancellation by the mortuary left me scrambling to find a trustworthy alternative headstone maker. A few phone calls later, I found Josh at AHS. Josh flexed his schedule to accommodate my limited time. Right then, I knew this important duty would be finished before I departed for home. Later that day, Josh and his father met me at their premises. Immediately, I sensed they would efficiently handle every detail with care. Imagine how happy I was with this collaborative spirit: I'd save time by avoiding a protracted process of emailed design iterations. I'd leave for home assured this task was in capable hands. With Josh's expertise, we quickly went through a creative process that evolved from basic lay-out to final design. By creating a mock-up, Josh showed how variations on the design would appear. Together, we improved the design until it was just right. The result captured the essence I had imagined. Shortly after, I left AHS knowing exactly what the headstone would look like with all the remaining details settled. We all know that ordering is one thing--fulfillment is where the rubber hits the road! Within the week, AHS had sent me photos showing the finished stone. A few weeks ago I called this place because of the great reviews. I briefly spoke with someone and told him what I was looking for and asked for a quote. He mentioned he was currently out on the field working and politely asked if he could call me right back. I waited two days, three days, left a couple of messages but got no reply so I thought I would just drive there and take a look at their showroom. Turns out they don't have a store/showroom. I was actually parked in front of someone's home! I kept looking at my GPS thinking I put in the wrong address but nope, this is a RESIDENCE. I left wondering how are these people making markers in their backyard? I decided to call other marker companies. After talking to a couple different people and mentioning my experience, I learned the owner's father's name is Richard Repozo. So looking more closely at the reviews, which seem more like advertisements, I noticed most people reviewing this business have a last name ending in "R", (Richard R., Angelina R., Caroline R.) which is the same as the owner's last name. So are these guys having family members post reviews??? And what would be the reason for that? Good thing I decided to take my business elsewhere. read more
