The Quick and Dirty: Visit to enjoy the novelty of a terrible breakfast in a cool retro setting. The Food: I live within walking distance of this place, so naturally I want to like it. Unfortunately, after having four terrible breakfasts there, I wrote this place off for good. Notably, on my last visit to the Brown Stone House, I witnessed a girl send her plate back three times. Each time, the staff seemingly ignored her wish for "crispy" homefries. In my personal experience, the food was bland, luke warm, and fast-food chain quality. They are quick to refill coffee though. The Atmosphere: It's retro, like a 1950's diner. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and especially liked the fact that you can watch the cook prepare the meal, since there's no barrier between the kitchen and the seating area. The Staff: Quick on coffee refills and seemingly nice enough. The Price: Dirt cheap, which is undoubtedly what keeps it in business, since the place is overflowing with hungover college kids every Saturday and Sunday. read more

The waitress here was one of the most busy people I've ever seen... And one of the friendliest! I feel like it's rare you see that these days. This is mostly your typical small diner. The staff was super friendly. I think the food was out within 10 minutes. Coffee was fresh. Definitely try the croissant French toast. It was above and beyond, the best French toast I've ever had! read more

Typical diner, lots of history and only survives because of local support..bla bla bla...Everything was run of the mill nothing stood out or grabbed my attention other than....the fact they would not seat me without the rest of my party there. Wow it took my family including my one year old child 4 mins to arrive after my table was given to the next customer. I understand table turning due to my almost 10 years of experience in the food business but I would never skip over a customer because there party was not all there. My money is green too!! The food was ok.. Environment had a diner feel but did not feel particularly clean. Great when you are hungry. The bacon had no taste at all. Perhaps they should consider a new bacon? The eggs were good. The pancakes were acceptable but nothing special and the waffles that are advertised as malt..have no discernible malt flavor. Service was quick and the staff seemed pretty helpful. The bathrooms were ridiculously small. I thought I was in the movie "Being John Malkovitch" the room was so awkward to get into. I frequently go to this diner and I would say it's got some of the best breakfast food you'll find in hamden. I also come here for the chicken salad which is the best chicken salad I've had. The staff is friendly, not much wait time unless you're there on a Saturday or Sunday around noon. Even at these times there's not much of a wait. Best diner I've been to in awhile. The service was amazing and FAST. Everything was cooked perfectly, coffee was brewed fresh and it's a very homey environment. We tried the blueberry pancakes which weren't the best but were without a doubt made fresh. All the waitresses were all so friendly and they timed out to go order perfectly so that it was fresh for the people we took it to. read more

Really nice, home town diner atmosphere. It's been around for more than 60 years. Good wait staff and good cooks. Breakfasts are really good, and lunches are just fine, especially the fresh cooked turkey sandwiches and the souvlaki. The Belgium Waffles are the best, served with fresh fruit. There is no attempt to become upscale, to be gourmet. Just good, basic food that tastes fresh, hot and great. read more

The "customer service" left a bad taste in my mouth. Unless you are one of the "regulars", forget get any attention from the servers. During our meal, the server spoke with us twice, once to get our order and once to give us the check. She never checked in on us to see if everything was "Ok", she was too busy blabbing with the regulars. The food was bland, and that's being polite. My "scrambled eggs" tasted more like egg jerky than anything else, bland and dry. I ordered my eggs with cheese. I was thinking i'd get some cheddar on it, what I got was this plastic-like American cheese that wasn't even melted on the eggs. Made me loose my appetite a bit. This is my new favorite local diner:). My parents love diners but sometimes I get bored or don't love the quality of places we go to. This place has the yummy quality of a brunch place with the prices and menu of a typical diner. The paninis and melts are delicious and the breakfasts looked great, although we didn't order breakfast. My only complaint is that lots of sandwiches don't come with fries and you have to pay$1.50 extra for what many other diners include. Also, the fries were not as delicious as other places. Love this place. Very friendly wait staff and solid diner food. Nothing super fancy, just great execution. The croissant French toast is very yummy. Also love the Greek egg white omelet and the fries, which are like perfectly done frozen cafeteria fries--you know what I mean. Excellent coffee always makes me feel warm inside. Sandwich was ok but horrible service. I sat down for service and was the first one there from a lunch break for training. The waitress forgot about me for sure. After seeing that all of my other colleagues were served i was then asked again what i had ordered. After a minute, I got up to get the order that was just sitting there to go. Driving to NY on the way from Massachusetts and decided to grab a bite so pulled off the Merritt Parkway. The exit is near colleges so it seemed like a good bet and it was. The Brownstone feels like a throwback, like an old diner, complete with the very friendly waitress. If you're in the mood for a traditional breakfast, it's worth the stop. This is exactly what you want from a breakfast/lunch place. It's a small eatery that appears unchanged by time, with waitresses who are genuinely and refreshingly engaged with their customers. When you walk in, you're asked if you want coffee before you even sit down. And that cup is never empty -- refills come fast and furious. As customers enter Brownstone, they're greeted by name -- everyone seems to be a regular. And the food is basic but perfectly done, and -- compared to a lot of similar spots -- a real bargain. This is a nice neighborhood diner/luncheonette that closes each day by 2 PM. I like to go on the weekend and sit at the counter. The place looks like it hasn't been renovated since 1945, which is part of its appeal. Food comes fast and service is fairly friendly. The waffles come with fresh strawberries and bananas - not some half-thawed frozen stuff like most places. Coffee is terrible - caveat emptor. read more

About a month ago I went to this place for breakfast. the waitres was rude and did the best of her to make my family feel unwelcome. And, this was not the firts time. She didn't offer me coffe. I requested one. And, she didn't ask me if my son finished his food cleaning up dishes in a hurry manner. I noticed a different behavior with other customers. Since this is a service I am paying for and no one is giving me as a charity I , won't come back to this place any more. The food is as home food. I really felt unwelcome for 3rd time at this place for this women. I felt the same as Lorial C, this punk stiile woman made faces and sounds of disagreement on my son happy and toddler behavior. read more
