I moved from Waukegan back in the mid-80s. Back in 2016 I wanted my youngest daughter and my wife to experience what life was like for me "back home". So, we traveled 2,200 miles in the winter. One of the places I expressively wanted to take them was to Brown's Chicken for the fried mushrooms. Back in the day I would go to Brown's sometimes and end up buying all of their fried mushrooms. After a while, they began to limit how much you could buy at one time. I don't know if they still do that, but it was really good back then. One day while on our visit we went to Brown's and ordered the fried mushrooms. It smelled great, but unfortunately they didn't taste the way they smelled. You could tell that the oil was probably old and the mushrooms had an odd taste. Likely old mushrooms. It was very disappointing. And just as unfortunately, one of the other spots I had been bragging about for years with my wife was Hillary's BBQ. It turned out to be disappointing as well. The Q was over cooked and not hot. The sauce was still there, but over all it was just as disappointing as Brown's old mushrooms. So much for nostalgia. read more

Hard dry and so spicy, we found it hard to eat them. The gravy was the only redeeming side of food. The biscuits were stale as well. And the cole slaw which we used to love was so SALTY it was hard to eat. Brown's used to be the only chicken fast food we would get but after all that I'm sorry to say we won't be back. Visiting from out of town, Kansas City, Missouri went to the Brown's chicken on Belvidere in Waukegan. Illinois spent over $40 to take the food back livers seem like they had them sitting there for a while. They was all dark and oh no crores on them no seasoning on them, the gizzards was hard as a rock. The chicken is fantastic - always hot, crispy, and juicy. The employees are friendly. The building/decor is a throwback (in a good way) , the restaurant is clean, and the music is hopping. They've got a barbecue test kitchen which is quite good too, but for me the chicken is the star of the show. HORRIBLE service. My husband gets food from here everyday before work & they have forgotten multiple items multiple times. They even forgot to give us back our debit card once. When we finally had the last straw today, my husband went to speak to the manager after they forgot our drinks & spilled gravy all over EVERYTHING. Instead of apologizing, giving us back our money or even giving us another drink for free, the manager stood there & argued about how the gravy was "grease" even though he knew he & his employees were in the wrong. For me, the quality of the food here has been consistently good - nothing over/under cooked; no strange pieces; they always remember the extras (sauce, napkins, silverware, plates if needed); and presentable (not just thrown together).
