I don't understand how their pork shoulder is MOIST! I've never had moist pulled pork from a BBQ place before. Not even in Texas! They must either mix their own mild sauce or have it made just for Hillery's because it wasn't some cheap, off the shelf crap just to marginally fit a function. I wish I'd have known ahead of time so I could have gotten more (someone made a lunch run since there is no delivery). I don't really have words for the rib tips other than OH MY F****** GAWD! I was craving rib tips today and a few friends who live in the area always tell me to come check out Hillery's. I have never been and didn't really know what to expect. Inside, it's nothing fancy. You pretty much place your order at the counter and wait around for your food. No tables or chairs to sit at, so basically it's just a takeout place. Looks like they do cater as they have different sized pans on display for you to see how much food it can fit for your party size. I was craving some bbq and some sides such as Mac n cheese and collard greens and was disappointed that they did not carry either or. Their main sides were fries, coleslaw, and fried okra from what I can remember. I decided to go with the rib tips dinner. I ordered the extra large portion as I was going to share with the hubby. Took about 15 minutes for my food to be ready, so not bad. It came with fries, coleslaw, and 2 pieces of bread for a total of $20. The rib tips were 'aight. The meat was a little tough to chew and not falling off the bone as I normally like. Also, they were cut in huge chunks and not really in bite sized pieces. The sauce was okay but it did not really blow me away and neither did the coleslaw. The fries were pretty bland as well and could have used some more salt or seasoning. It didn't even come with ketchup in my carry out bag. Overall it was meh. I still would like to try their wings some other time and see how that goes. read more

Not sure what happen but the food simple isn't the same any longer. We've enjoyed their ribtips for many years and now it's just different. Staff is always kind and food is always fresh and I really, really like their cole slaw. read more

Hillary's used to be a community staple we were proud of, but after this experience, I won't be back. I spent two days trying to place an order for the Super Bowl. When someone finally answered, they barked "Hillary's hold," put the phone down for five minutes, then picked back up only to say "Hillary's" and hang up on me. When I finally got through again, the service was baffling. I was told I couldn't order over the phone and had to come in person--only to then be asked what I wanted, then told they were out of chicken anyway. To top it off, they refused to let us schedule a 4:30 PM pickup, forcing us to take the food early. By the time we could actually eat, the meal was cold. I have been going to Hillery's since 1974 - when they were located on Lewis Ave in North Chicago. Before that, I went to a little place on Sheridan rd in North Chicago (Partners) but after it burned down I started going to the place on Lewis Ave. The ribs at the Sheridan Rd location (the one that burned down) tasted identical to Hillery's, so I am guessing it was reborn as Hillery's. After the place on Lewis Ave in Waukegan closed, I started going to the N. Lewis location in Waukegan. I have also gotten ribs from both the Kenosha and Round Lake (before it closed) locations. Everyone in this place has an attitude like it's your fault they work there. First time there and the lady was frustrated when I asked a question about my food that I'm paying for. I should of walked out after seeing the Flys everywhere but I had an hour wait waiting on my car to get fixed across the street. Been driving 25 miles one way for over 30 years for their tips and catfish. the catfish is deep south, just like my Grandma Jones used to make. And their sauce? Forget about it. Hillary's is a bbq staple in lake county. One of the most consistent BBQ spots around. Their house made sauce has a great vinegar based savory flavor. The ribs tips are always juices and cooked to perfection. If you're in lake county or even in Kenosha where they have another location, you won't be disappointed. I was too busy eating that I forgot to take a picture of the food! We had rib tips - a go to meal at Hillery's! It was juicy, messy and hot just like I like mine. I loved the sauce with the white bread. Reminds me of my childhood. My husband grew up eating here and says the quality has declined. I wish I had a chance to get those back in the day ribs because in my opinion they were good. I'm giving 3 stars since I've had better bbq but I like this place and I think it's worth the visit. Besides the customer service, sucking, the food is pretty good. I would stay away from the brisket, it's always rubbery. They have good combos, and they are a bit pricey. They never pick up the phone so you might as well not bother calling. The seafood selection they have is pretty good as well. The ambience of this place is mediocre. Hillery's has amazing barbecue!! I prefer the mild sauce and love it on a quarter white fried chicken or on rib tips. Dinners come with a side of coleslaw which has an extra kick to it. I grew up near Hillary's Bar BQ twenty years ago but moved to Florida so when I came back to visit family, had to give a try. It was just as good as I remembered years ago. Their sauce (hot or mild) is so good and unique, I have yet to experience any others that compare in all my travels. Had rib tips & wings that were amazing and priced well below what I had expected in our present economy. Extra Extra large tip & 15 wing's with large fries for $33. I made four separate meals out that. I will be stopping one more time before I head home from holidays to get a gallon of that sauce and more tasty barbecue treats. read more

Don't like the new way the cut is on the rib tips. Pieces are too big and tough to bite on. Not sure what they are going for but the quality of the ribs has gone down. If I wanted to fight with real tough meat I would cook it myself! I moved to Antioch but always came back to my home town to get rib tips.
