Once I thought I needed a new trike tire tube, but it turns out the tube was just twisted in the tire--they pointed this out to me, fixed it and pumped it up again for free. Plus, I love that I can get a couple bolts/screws etc. there instead of buying a whole box elsewhere. Besides being a historic gem, Brown's is the quintessential "old man" hardware store. Even the young guys know what they are talking about. Anything they don't have they can get, they carry made tools/products that are made in the USA and the service is outstanding. They even cut glass! I once went in looking for an end cap to hold the pedals on my kid's tricycle- one of the guys pulled a dusty box down from some back area and gave it to me free of charge. The prices are not really different from the big box places, and the service and convenience is %100 better. read more

This is your typical local hardware store experience, but overall it's a good one. Aisles are cramped and jammed with merchandise, as they're trying to fit a lot of stuff in a small space. But on the plus side, there are actually people here willing and able to assist you, unlike Home Depot. I come here or to Ayers Hardware any chance I get to bypass the nightmare orange warehouse store. read more

Great customer service! I needed a few steel hex bolts to replace the rusted ones on my car's license plate holders. The local advance auto parts didn't have any that appeared to match mine plus they were packaged. So I looked up Brown's online and headed on over. I headed straight to a sales rep and showed him my existing bolt (it wasn't busy at the time). He new exactly where to find them in the store, took the time to match up and find the right replacements, and then took me straight to the register. Overall, I was in and out within 10 minutes! I needed two screws or something to secure the old ones holding the armature that keep falling out of my screen door. As always, I got a friendly greeting as I entered, staff was readily available to listen to the repair I was trying to make, discussed what would probably work best and found the right size screws for me. They spent almost 10 minutes discussing possible solutions and remedies with me, sharing their expertise, acknowledging my understanding of the repair and then rang up the 23 cent sale and thanked me for my business. This is the level of service I have received every time I have visited Brown's over the last 11 years I have lived in Falls Church, although my purchases are usually a bit more substantial. Brown's is also where I find inexpensive gadgets to add to my Christmas gift decorations which everyone loves as much as the actual gift. read more

Not sure how they stay in business competing with the big box stores, but I am very glad they are! The perfect small town hardware store, straight out of Mayberry! Very friendly and helpful staff, and they surprisingly pack mostly all of your needs into a small space. They always give my dog treats and welcome him to the store, so we incorporate Brown's into our walks if I need any supplies. Hardware store the way they used to make them-with accurate, helpful, advice. Go in with a rusted bolt, they'll help you find a replacement. Take in a piece of painted wood, they'll help you match the coior. If there is a criticism to be made, it is that they are not open on Sunday-but they are open until 6 the rest of the week though. They also have very nice household items such as scissors and flashlights. Unless you need bulk materials, you'd be surprised how many things you need can be found here! read more

Mom and Pop hardware stores are a dying breed. I intend to shop in them for as long as I can. Brown's Hardware carries all those weird things that no one uses anymore, but when you see them you are reminded that you need one. A clothes line? I have a dryer. But, wait, it's more energy efficient to line dry and I can hang the pool towels there. The employees can answer any question you may have, and take the time to walk you through a project. I go to Brown's for a hard to find screw or nail, and leave with $50 worth of things that I *need*. read more

No Task is too small for their best effort. I took in 10 Ikea cabinet knobs for which the accompanying screws would not work. Dave worked to identify the issue (screws were not threaded properly) and the fix (finding the right re-threading tool). He then re-threaded each screw - even took them home to complete because there wasn't enough time at the shop to do so. Dave seemed to even enjoy the challenge this presented and never indicated he felt such a mundane task was beneath him or Brown's. Compared to all the other requests, projects and larger purchases that come through their door, this job was so relatively inconsequential, yet they gave it their all. I'm so happy that this type of customer service still exists and I'll be recommending Brown's to many others. read more

I work out in the Springfield Franconia area and I've had to have LOTS of keys made for our office. We have places all around us that say they can make keys - but the keys they've made were cut so badly that they never worked. I grew up in Falls Church and knew that if anyone could make them properly, it was Browns. The problem now is that I only grab a handful at a time to take over there and while they're cutting them, I stroll through the store. Inevitably I'll end up with an armful of treasures pulled from those wonderful shelves. By the way, I've found some wonderful books on historic Falls Church and it seems like Browns has been there from the very beginning. Not always a hardware store but always a Brown's market in that location. I believe that George Washington may have walked on that same worn linoleum floor that's there today! read more

Can you imagine going to a retail store & getting that kind of service. Everyone in Falls Church calls this place "Mr. Brown's." It's a neighborhood institution. I buy all my hardware and supplies there unless I need something exotic which they don't carry. The people who work there actually know how all the tools and supplies work and make very helpful suggestions, even when that saves you money and means less sales for them. When I first moved to Falls Church, for example, I padlocked my toolshed door shut and promptly lost the key. I went to Brown's to buy a big bolt cutter but they just loaned me one for an hour for free rather than making me buy one. Needless to say, they made money on the deal, since I've spent many times over more money since then on other things. Forget Home Depot, where you can't find knowledgeable sales help.
