I wish I could give this store zero star. While it might be a good idea to have hardware store targeting the low-income families, the quality of the product is very poor. We got a key safe box to keep a spare key, and it would not open even with the right password. And overall, things here are old style, stone-age things that wouldn't work for a modern family. You would just better off by getting things from Amazon, or go to target. I am glad that they decided to close this store. Please remain closed and replace this one with a better store. read more

Mom and Pop store where everyone knows what you need when you ask them about project or best item for the job and they take you to where it is in the store. There's a reason it's a local institution and legend. Yes, it's way smaller the the "big box" companies you know of. Brown's doesn't have everything they have because of size. But they have just about everything you truly need and can get it for you if it's not in stock. No wandering around endless isles with no help to help that's helpless. It's a small parking lot. Rarely full because your in and out so quick whether you need help or not. They're not open on Sunday and close a little early which is a major inconvenience for those who work a regular weekday hours. Doubt that's gonna change. But it's worth rearranging your schedule if you need hardware etc. read more

Ok I'll admit it. I am not a hardcore hardware store shopper BUT I am a sucker for small town shops with a friendly neighborhood feel. Brown's Hardware looks like it was built on a 1950's Hollywood movie set. When I walk around the aisles I can imagine Dennis the Menace darting around causing trouble (being that young rascal he is) and Mr. Wilson yelling "DENNNNNNNNNISSSSS!" on the top of his lungs. All of the shop workers are very friendly and helpful and don't make me feel like a dumb-dumb when I ask questions on things that I have no idea what I am talking about. While they are no Home Depot they offer a wide range of basic goods and services such as key making, tool sharpening, rodent repelling/trapping, garden tools, nuts and bolts...and other things I don't know the name of. They also sell plastic pink flamingos for your front lawn which alone garners five stars from me! read more

You can find most anything -- and the detailed instructions on how to install it, paint it, or maintain it. The prices can be a bit higher than the dreaded Home Depot but the outstanding customer service is well worth it. The nuts, bolts, screws, washers are not pre-packaged; you just buy the quantity you need. The selection is extraordinary. They have all the basics you need for successful home projects, chores, and gardening. If Brown's doesn't have it, you don't need it. How do these guys ever take inventory? Outstanding service. I took in a probably 45 year old patio door screen frame/door insert with a piece/top bar that detached when I was attempting to replace the screen. They fixed the metal frame and added pet resistant screen for under $40. It was ready the same day. read more

There's a reason that Brown's has been a staple of Falls Church practically forever. To reiterate all of the other 5 star reviews, you really can't beat the customer service and the old-timey atmosphere. I went in for a handful of items that I needed for painting--well...an attempt at painting--a room in my home. An employee literally went around the store and handed me the items on my list just like in old tv shows. There's more--my total at checkout was $1.14 and my items were neatly packed up in a brown paper bag. I mean, come on. So long as you go in with managed expectations that this is a small business not to be compared to a hardware superstore you'll be quite pleased with your experience. read more

Brown's has two things going for it: location and customer service. It's located between two Home Depots (Merrifield and Seven Corners). For those residing in Falls Church it is much more convenient than driving the traffic-filled roads to get to those other stores. Finding quality answers, or even someone willing to listen to my question, is difficult at Home Depot. At Brown's I can always find someone to pose questions and help me find solutions. Brown's prices are a bit higher (they must cover service and location). Brown's also doesn't carry everything--I've yet to see stacks of studs and drywall. Their hours aren't as convenient either. Many a Sunday I've had to make the drive to a competitor to purchase ant traps, a tool, or some hardware. read more

Despite the name, this hardware store does not have a signature color. If it seems at first to be an anachronism, that's okay. When you need something to get a job done, they have it. Getting in and out is faster than a big-box shopping center. Options for individual items are limited to one color but that doesn't matter because most of the stuff they sell goes inside a wall anyway. Paint, is a notable exception -- it comes in an array of colors. Anyway, whatever it is you're in a hardware/garden store looking for, they have it. Assistance locating the item you need is given ungrudgingly and in plain English. There is no overhead PA system. Unless you just really enjoy browsing in a hardware store. I used to love this shop. Great customer service and a selection of items large enough to cover most of your needs. Well, not anymore. Yesterday I called about a part and asked if it would be possible to send a picture. The employee replied with a curt NO. In the past I was able to email pictures or even text to a personal phone. Today I went to the store looking for the part, and the employee assigned to "help" told me to wait for my turn in the most impolite way. Two strikes and I am out. Home Depot has better prices, better selection, and now definitely better customer service. read more

The staff was extremely helpful, very friendly and helped me not only find what I needed (screws to put on a license plate) but also went above and beyond and put it on for me. The gentleman told me how to fix my watering wand! I'll get over there as soon as possible to purchase some that I need. I love folks that want to fix rather than sell something. I needed an obscure part to fix a leaky faucet. Home Depot didn't have what I needed. I went to Brown's and the sales guy found a lot with what I needed, but then told me it was silly to buy the whole kit for just one little piece. He literally found a little plastic piece in one of the million drawers and MADE me what I needed in the back with a drill. This was probably the best experience I've ever had at any store. A longtime independent hardware store on the corner of E. Broad Street VA Route 7 and North Washington Street in Downtown city of Fall Church. I believe it is on the same block as Falls Church Camera, one of the few photographic supply stores in the area. The parking lot (Free) is the rear and be reached. By making a left turn from North Washington Street to Park Avenue, then turn left into the parking lot across from the Kaiser Permanente parking garage. Look for Action Music Instrument Store, the rear of Brown's store is on the left side of this parking lot. There is an entrance door in the rear of the store, and one in there is a steep stair down in the store. read more

This is the go to place in Falls Church when the toilet creaks, when the door is stuck, when you need ear plugs, when you need a key, when you need 5 different types of glue, a pocket knife, a mouse trap, ah... I'm losing it. ..... when you just need to walk through a place with lots of stuff that you can touch. It's like going to a library and realizing that all this is mine to take home. The store is crammed with guy stuff (sorry girls, I am biased toward the term.) The staff is knowledgeable and two of them helped me remove a demo toilet seat from around my head. Every town needs a good hardware store. This is a good one. There's always somebody there to help you find that one little part that you need. Lots of yard tools, mulch, sand, potting soil, birdseed, etc. keys made, All kinds of glues, paints, nuts and bolts, tools. Prices seem competitive. And worth it for the expertise and convenience of having a local hardware store, even if you might occasionally pay a tiny bit more. And I'm not even sure that you will. I love Brown's Hardware. The staff is knowledgeable (I challenge anyone to find such knowledge at Home Despot or other places!). The staff is also wonderfully nice. They have on more than one occasion helped me carry things to my car. I didn't ask them, they just offered. If they don't have what you need they will tell you where to go or an alternative. We have been living in Falls Church for over a decade and Brown's is still our number one choice from Spring planting needs (the potatoes I buy from them always produce!) to Winter shoveling needs.
