Unacceptable attitude and zero customer service at the counter

I am incredibly disappointed by the shocking lack of professionalism at the Lanai @ Ala Moana food court location today. I understand that the food service industry is stressful and rush hours get busy, but that is absolutely no excuse for treating paying customers with blatant hostility and contempt. Two separate employees were completely out of line during my visit: 1. The Cashier (Young Female): She had a terrible attitude from the start. When I politely asked for her name, she looked right at me and aggressively said, "I don't know." Refusing to give a customer a name is completely unacceptable and a massive red flag. 2. The Counter Staff (Older Female): I pointed to a specific item and asked for it. Instead of helping, she grew visibly irritated, snapped at me that "they are all the same," and refused to accommodate a basic request in a highly rude tone. A busy shift or working minimum wage does not give anyone the right to treat customers like an enemy or an inconvenience. I walked out feeling insulted and completely unwelcome. Management seriously needs to step in, look at who was working this shift, and enforce basic customer service training. Until this toxic behavior is addressed, I will not be spending my money here again. Absolutely unacceptable.

This Brug Bakery is located inside the food court Lanai next door to Macy's. I thought I post this location before once again I guess it was some time ago so that Yelp Ghost erased it . Lots of fresh pastries selection to choose from also with some new Holiday flavors . Support local

I love most items from Brug for the most part. I find that pastries and cakes from Asian bakeries are not as sweet as the American ones. Today I tried the custard cup and the bear pastry that's filled with chocolate. They were both yummy. The bear was filled with milk chocolate, but I could tell that it was Japanese chocolate if that makes sense. The chocolate had a distinct taste. I usually get the ham roll and curry fry.

Brug is like Saint-Germain's modern twin - cut from the same (Japanese) dough. Their pastries have a gentle sweetness I adore, and every bite hits the spot. My mom? A Brug enthusiast. What starts as window shopping almost always ends with a bag in hand. (Restraint? Never heard of her.) Location: Find it on the second floor of Ala Moana Center inside The Lanai Food Court. There's another street-level Brug by Lupicia - perfect for when your "just browsing" moment turns into "okay, maybe one." Parking: Free and plentiful. Circling the stalls is just prep for navigating the dessert maze inside. Atmosphere: Nestled in a slightly "strategic" spot (right by the bathrooms) at the corner of The Lanai Food Court. Brug is never empty - a testament to their pastry power. Their lineup is always fully stocked, even during peak hours (seasonal treats aside). Grab your tray, wield your tongs, and claim your carbs - no need to sprint like it's Black Friday. Food: Planned for one pastry, left with six (oops). The crew: apple pie, kuma choco custard, blueberry baked cheesecake tart, neko pan, a sweet toasty bread whose name escaped me, and a pumpkin spice mummy befitting for the season. The gold medal goes to the apple pie, with its flavorful filling baked in a buttery flaky crust (if you know, you know). The blueberry cheesecake tart took silver - creamy, dreamy, and dotted with little bursts of blueberry. Everything else made for excellent desk-side snacking throughout my workday. The pumpkin spice mummy was a personal miss (not my jam in general). More of a savory person? Don't worry, they've got you covered too. Drinks: No sips for me - the pastries were the main attraction. Need a cold boost? Soft drinks, water, green tea, and refrigerated delights like custard pudding (purin) and panna cotta await, like those impulse-purchase trinkets at the checkout line. Service: The line may require some light elbow diplomacy, but the staff keeps things moving - no complaints here. Price: About $30 for six pastries, basically a sugar-fueled steal. Would I return? Without a doubt. My sweet tooth already has a standing reservation.

I love Brug! I usually frequent the Pearl Ridge location but I like them all. My go to is the spinach puff pastry! I tried the loaf of cute bear shaped rolls this time around and it super good with butter. Come early to get the best selection as this location is pretty busy!

Taking a break from shopping in the afternoon, we decided to stop at the Lanai food court to grab something to eat. We recall seeing a Brug on the ground level but didn't realize there was one here as well. Many of the items had sold out, but we ended up getting a Portuguese Sausage bun, which had Portuguese sausage, egg, and cheese with nori on top and a special item, Shrimp Avocado Focaccia, which had shrimp, avocado, and tomatoes on olive oil focaccia bread topped with a savory tartar sauce. Since Brug is a Japanese inspired bakery, both items were light and delicate. We enjoyed both items and they were a good snack for our break.

I like this brug more than the one on street level because it's bigger and more well-lit. Their curry pan is the best! Also their croquettes! I always made sure to get those when I'm in the lanai food court. Their mochi donuts were good too. They had a taro flavor one which I liked. You can rack up reward points by signing up with your phone number. Bags cost money so byob. Service was always friendly and efficient!

Dessert in Honolulu, Hawaii... I had just finished breakfast with mom at The Lanai Food Court on the Mall Level of Ala Moana Center when I thought that I should show her the cute pastries at BRUG Bakery. I had received the bear bun, stuffed with chocolate and custard (Kuma Choco Custard) as a gift in the past. I bought the Neko Pan (Kitty shaped bun filled with strawberry cream) from the Manoa location a few months ago. I don't think mom had seen these kawaii creations before. I pointed them out to her and got a couple of treats to take home. The Peach Almond Tart had an exceptional crust! It was nice and crunchy! The Mixed Fruit Custard Danish was also excellent and beautiful! The cashier was very knowledgeable and friendly. She was able to answer my questions about the app and the different locations of BRUG. For example, she said that there's another location of BRUG downstairs of Ala Moana Center as well as one in Pearlridge and at Kahala Mall. I'm really happy that the points from all of the locations add up! I'll try the Kalbi Roll next... and the kuma chigiri pan (many little bear faces together to make a loaf that pulls apart).

I found BRUG Bakery on my last trip to Honolulu as I walked around a smaller food court on the 2nd level of Ala Moana Center to look for bakeries. Then, I saw the cute teddy bears in the corner of my eyes. I took a picture and shared with my bear friend. I swore to come back. But then, I couldn't remember where it was on this trip until my local friend drove by as we were trying to find parking. Because he wanted to go to Surfers Bakery, which happened to be closed yesterday. These bear buns were not just cute but also tasted delicious. I don't know much history of this restaurant. But I have a feeling it's a popular chain in Japan. I saw other BRUG Bakeries around the island of Oahu.

There are two Brug Hokkaido bakeries at Ala Moana Center. I prefer the one at the Lanai food court (near Macys) because it has more to offer and lots of seats! On this visit I picked up the new Hawaii monk seal with lilikkoi butter. Cute and delicious! The customer service is nothing special but they get the job done. There's also a points reward program if you get here enough.

This Brug has the widest selection of pastries when compared to the other Brug locations. They are always well stocked and the small area is set up to efficiently manage the flow of people browsing and checking out in a way that prevents traffic jams and ensures you can see all of the options. The pastries can be pricy, but all of their breads are really nice and fluffy. The puff pastry products are just okay, but all the bread based ones are delicious. This is also the only location where I've seen the lilikoi monk seal breads, which you HAVE to get! The lilikoi flavor is very strong and they're just so cute!

The cutest Valentine's treats! Donut, heart shaped strawberry melon pan, chic dipped strawberries with chic cake!
    Irene M.

I've loved Brug baked goods where it's simple yet fancy. Prior to the pandemic they also had a self serve soup station which was the bast thing ever I'd always check what rotation they have and know exactly what pastry I'd like to pair it with. Now we still browse and select ourselves as it's all individually wrapped using provided trays and tongs I always get some savory veggie ones and a few more for breakfast the next morning. What I love also is how super creative they are with some seasonal specials that's just about impossible to snatch because it sells so fast. Timing is everything knowing when the fresh breads and pastries are brought out though you can't go wrong with any choices. Thank you!!

Hubs had to fast from 6 am for his 2 pm surgery so I thought he would probably be starving and would enjoy a delectable salt and butter roll from here. I had seen two occupied tables as I walked into the shop. Both had matcha drinks. Why not? I asked the young man assisting me, what's the best matcha drink? He said his favorite was banana matcha with extra banana foam. Okay I'll try it. He repeated it to the cashier. So popular there was a wait for beverages to be prepared. Soon enough mine was ready. I think Doc would enjoy this drink. This shop is a working bakery. Many yummy pastries displayed. Menu is posted high up above to choose from. Rather tiny shop with room for customers to stand in line to order and wait for drinks. Clean, busy with a few tables and chairs outside but pretty much in direct sun.

It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. FOOD - 4 stars... the malasadas were good, but that ube dessert was next level AMBIANCE - 4 stars...really a takeout operation with a lot of temptations SERVICE - 4 stars...very calm and orderly TOTAL - 4 stars...yet another spot for sweet Hawaiian decadence RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Table for 11 the morning after the 4th of July without a reservation? What, like it's hard? You…read morecan't make reservations here, but they do have an iPad that you can be added to their waitlist. Even though it was rather busy, we were seated within 10-ish minutes and got their biggest table outside. And right next to their butter roll grill- score! We had 11 people including kids and teenagers and there's really something on the menu for everyone here. Even my picky nephew was able to find a milkshake and add an egg to their ham and cheese croissant. I got their mahi mahi breakfast and upgraded to get their fried rice. Mahi mahi might not sound like a breakfast food for most, but it's one of my favs that I used to get from their OG location and I hadn't had it in so long. And that's the best thing about Liliha Bakery, there are so many local favorites that you can get any time of day. My mom got the oxtail soup (I got a bit of plate fomo from that). The rest of the table got breakfast classics: pancakes w/ a side of spam, 2 eggs + bacon, steak and eggs etc. The butter rolls here are so good and love that they come complimentary but I do believe there's a charge after the first basket.

Everything we ordered was fresh and flavorful. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the quality of the food. Our waitress seemed to be having a rough day. The table behind us had to send food back three different times because they kept receiving the wrong orders, and there was about a 30-minute period where our server completely disappeared. We had to ask another staff member for our check and to-go boxes. She also never came back to check on our table or refill our water. Everyone has off days, so we're hoping that's all it was. We'd definitely come back because the food was so good--we just hope to have a different server next time.

Green Tea Puff ($3.75) and Coco Puff ($3.69) - I didn't like these. The chantilly topping was way too sweet. Pudding filling tastes cheap.
