Wonderful crumble on a guava-filled malassada
    Nora W.

Great owner who is kind and makes killer pastries. His malassadas are light and creamy with a fine crumb. He fills them with guava, custard, mango or plain powdered with sugar. His chocolate croissants are rich with chocolate and butter. He dedicates himself to his customers and is friendly with everyone and so helpful. The coffee is delicious and he is generous with his pours. Support a small business. Opens at 4;00 AM to be there for the hotel workers and construction workers.

Maleko's is a small spot that happened to be in the same hotel as the Airbnb we stayed at. The store itself is small and is more of a grab and go spot, however, the coffee here was actually very good! I ordered a cold brew and it was the perfect cool drink I needed while also giving me a good dose of caffeine. They also offer a variety of different pastries that looked really yummy, but I didn't try any during my visit. Service here was exceptionally warm and friendly as well. Overall, I'd say it was a really solid spot that I'd recommend!

This shop opens at 4:00am and perhaps that is their competitive advantage. The store looks very hectic with items and boxes strewn everywhere. Pastries are ever present in cases, counters, and rolling racks. I ordered the latte which menu says $5.00 but I was charged $7.33. Even with tax that didn't make sense to me. The coffee was not even that good. I had a couple of sips and that was it. If you are looking for a place that is open super early, you can consider this one? Casual. Service was decent. Please come and create your own experience.

I was excited to check out Maleko, as they are supposedly known for their coffee and pastries (especially, the malasadas). When I arrived, I was a bit taken aback that it really wasn't much of a cafe, as there wasn't any seating inside. It was more of a to-go type of place, but the place itself just wasn't tidy and a bit messy. The pastries that were in the case looked super dried out and unappetizing; there were a few malasadas that were in a bin with powdered sugar, but not sure how long those were standing there, even though the employees stated that they were just freshly made. I decided on a coffee, and they were gracious enough to make a 'customized' coconut peanut butter-flavored one, using one of the jars that they had available. The coffee itself was strong and it had that subtle hint of the coconut peanut butter. Unfortunately, I had a sticker shock of this coffee costing me over $9! In addition, it felt like there was some pressure to purchase additional items, but don't cave in! Another patron stopped by, also stating that they had heard about their malasads, but seeing the condition that they were in, he left. Located at the Waikiki Monarch Hotel. +avoid their dried-out pastries +overpriced coffee +located at the Waikiki Monarch Hotel

Got here early after a morning stroll grabbed some treats to and a coffee Love this place! Great made to order coffee and the lady making it is just the sweetest as she cares so much if the coffee is exactly to the liking of the customer, as she's willing to adjust or remake as needed. For me it was a perfect black coffee with a hint of coconut, yummy! Everything is made fresh that day as they start baking at midnight.

The aloha spirit is alive and well here at this sweet cozy bakery! Came here to order a coffee, bit of protein with the warmed ham cheese egg croissant and ... I saw these wonderful fresh baked goodies. Last day in Honolulu so I must get these pastries. Almond bear claw, Chocolate covered malasada sprinkled with coconut, Blueberry, coconut-peanut butter malasada. And a pineapple passion fruit muffin. Our service was wonderful , we wondered what coconut peanut butter tasted like and she offered to give us a free pastry. Wow, so generous but not necessary. Thank you so much. They sell lots of gifts too. I saw coffee painted artwork and this was inspiring. Lots of local sourced products. Would come here to support this cozy bakery off the beaten path.

Vegan Malasadas, plain and guava filled!
    Vincent N.

Ordered a mix of malasadas through DoorDash, an early 5am delivery! And did not disappoint! I was looking for a vegan option, since one of us has a dairy allergy. The plain and guava flavor hit the spot! Just enough powder coating on the outside and nice doughy texture from the inside. Maleko definitely can hang with the other big malasadas on the island! Highly recommend!

I stayed by this cafe for a week while on vacation and passed by every morning and night. I saw their vat of uncovered homemade peanut butter sitting out for days even after business hours. It's disgusting. Their pastries are also never covered, and their dishes are never washed after closing.

Malasadas are baked and not deep fried and have plenty of filling: custard, blueberry, and guava options. We also bought coconut/pineapple muffin and the ham, cheese, egg, and a ham, cheese, egg croissant sandwiches. All very fresh and delicious. Enjoy!

Ask the Community - Maleko Coffee And Pastries

Are there any pastries that are dairy free (egg is okay, no milk products) aside from the malasadas?

    Are you open on Sundays?

Sunday morning close but if you asking about pizza I start at five pm

Is curbside pick up available if I place an order by phone?

    Yes text order to 808-561-2846

Do you have gluten free options?

    No sorry

    Are there vegan options?

They certainly have non-dairy 'milk' options, such as soy. Otherwise, I don't know if any of the food items were vegan. That said, the owner makes all the food himself from scratch so he will certainly know all the ingredients and whether any items… Read more

Where is the best place to park?

I parked in the parkade attached to the building but it is fairly expensive. If you get lucky you might be able to find a spot on the other side of the street from the store.

This is the only standing Kulu Kulu and I hope this place does not close, or if it does relocate, come closer to Central Oahu where the rent is cheaper, haha (hint). This location is on the outer edges of Waikiki on Hobron Lane in Eaton Square. I rarely venture to Waikiki, and if I do make the dreaded drive to "town", this place and Kan Sushi will be the only regular places where I will make my stop(s), because its so worth it. I've had a long-standing love-affair with Kulu Kulu from the Shirokiya Food Court location with it's waffle bears and Hello Kitty waffles, the takeout Nama Chocolate cups stocked at Mitsuwa Marketplace and now here, in town. The Ube Coconut Mousse $6.95 blew our minds, it was THE best tasting thing, ever. Both the ube and the coconut were not cloying, and as with all of their treats, not overly sweet either. That's why I love Japanese pastries, they get the sweetness just perfect and I have no idea how they mastermind that ratio! Strawberry Panna Cotta $5.95 was creamy, flavorful, delicious and surprisingly light and refreshing for such a creamy dessert. I normally don't get this kind of combination of flavors, and it tasted like something you'd get in a Michellin-rated establishment. Looking back at the photos, I see vanilla bean seeds in the panna cotta, so every loving detail and nuance shows through with each mouthful. Nama Chocolate $5.75 is my go-to chocolate LOVE. It's cut into cool creamy semi-sweet squares dusted with cocoa and it melts in your mouth! This is my favorite of all things that Kulu Kulu makes. I actually enjoy this better than the famous Royce Chocolates from Japan. We ordered another seasonal Strawberry dessert slice cake but it was eaten before I could review (and/or taste it); I've heard it was very very delicious. This place is so good that I plan to bring my friends who will be visiting from Virginia here to try their pastries. I also plan to support this business for as long as I can and make more frequent trips to town just to get these amazing desserts.

Knowing me, I was most interested in the dessert, but we ended up dining here on a whim. We had really great service when we dined in. I ordered the oxtail soup because I hadn't had it before, which fulfills my rule of trying new foods when I can. It was tasty, with a unique spice blend reminiscent of other beef soups I've had in the past. However, I was particularly wowed however by the complementary bread and raspberry jam. Call me simple, but the bread was actually the star of the show for me, perfectly soft and buttery. The location in Waikiki is perhaps a clear reminder that it is a tourism city. The atmosphere is that of fine dining. Not a bad place to grab a meal when on vacation in Honolulu.

Bad customer service. When you get there in a busy/rush hour, they expect you to grab a ticket but they barely use that thing. I waited with my family while the ladies behind the counter talk amongst themselves to finally notice us. Server Emily had a really bad attitude. She didn't even welcome us or greeted us when we walked in. Seems like they just hire anyone.. Rush hour is around 6pm-7pm. Not that busy. You usually see the same people everyday. Food at the restaurant... the prime rib isn't even a prime rib. New York and shrimp is too expensive for a very thin not deveined shrimps. I like my steak med rare but the last time I ordered it, they cooked it very medium well & so I got it taken back to the cook to get another one but a manager named Geraldine stepped in and said they'd have to charge me twice if I wanted another one. I'm a local and this was really unfortunate. Will never come back here due to the lack of customer service.
