I stopped by here yesterday morning for a coffee and a malasada. While traveling I try to hit up a new local coffee shop every day and on this morning it happened to be Maleko Coffee and Pastries. This might be one of the only places in Waikiki open at 4 AM which is perfect if you've just arrived the night before from the East Coast. The inside of the shop feels homey. They have a display case full of pastries along with additional baked goods set out nearby. For my coffee on this morning I decided to go with a coconut latte and then ordered a blueberry malasada while my father went with a custard-filled one. At Maleko, the malasadas are pre-made but not filled until you order which I think is a smart move. I first tried my blueberry malasada and thought it was good. The dough was light and fluffy and the filling had a great flavor. As for my coffee, I have to agree with other reviews that the syrup made it overly sweet. I still drank it, but I definitely would have preferred something less sweet. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again for the malasadas. As for the coffee, I would probably pass unless you prefer your drinks on the sweeter side. read more

I came in because I saw that they had vegan donuts. He said I could do guava, blueberry, or plain, but he recommended the guava. It was less than three dollars including tax, so definitely affordable. The guava filling was great, but the donut itself was kind of bland. If it weren't so cheap, I would have given it three stars. Donuts are unreal - better than Leonards in my opinion. The baker/owner is super friendly! I was happy that this place was on the lower level of where we were staying at! Well, this may not be a fancy pastry shop, they have a solid assortment of pastries, and their Malasadas are some of the best I've ever had. I highly recommend stopping in and grabbing their coconut peanut butter or macadamia nut peanut butter. They also have several other variations, including chocolate. They also offer local honey. Their peanut butter is highly sought after back in the states. So if you're here grab a combo and give it a try, you just might find yourself ordering some online once you've given it a try. read more

Maleko's is a small spot that happened to be in the same hotel as the Airbnb we stayed at. The store itself is small and is more of a grab and go spot, however, the coffee here was actually very good! I ordered a cold brew and it was the perfect cool drink I needed while also giving me a good dose of caffeine. They also offer a variety of different pastries that looked really yummy, but I didn't try any during my visit. Service here was exceptionally warm and friendly as well. This shop opens at 4:00am and perhaps that is their competitive advantage. The store looks very hectic with items and boxes strewn everywhere. Pastries are ever present in cases, counters, and rolling racks. I ordered the latte which menu says $5.00 but I was charged $7.33. Even with tax that didn't make sense to me. The coffee was not even that good. I had a couple of sips and that was it. If you are looking for a place that is open super early, you can consider this one? Casual. Service was decent. This review is strictly for their coffee, which was extremely underwhelming. I got the macadamia nut coffee, iced. I really wanted to like this, but the macadamia nut flavor feels very superficial. It is overpoweringly sugary without having any real depth. The artificial nutty flavor just sits on top of a weak brew, leaving a weird, lingering aftertaste. It's more sugar-water than coffee. My drink was also no stirred, so it was slightly hot while it was over ice. I think I might've been happier with Starbucks (which is my least favorite). read more

I was excited to check out Maleko, as they are supposedly known for their coffee and pastries (especially, the malasadas). When I arrived, I was a bit taken aback that it really wasn't much of a cafe, as there wasn't any seating inside. It was more of a to-go type of place, but the place itself just wasn't tidy and a bit messy. The pastries that were in the case looked super dried out and unappetizing; there were a few malasadas that were in a bin with powdered sugar, but not sure how long those were standing there, even though the employees stated that they were just freshly made. I decided on a coffee, and they were gracious enough to make a 'customized' coconut peanut butter-flavored one, using one of the jars that they had available. The coffee itself was strong and it had that subtle hint of the coconut peanut butter. Unfortunately, I had a sticker shock of this coffee costing me over $9! In addition, it felt like there was some pressure to purchase additional items, but don't cave in! Another patron stopped by, also stating that they had heard about their malasads, but seeing the condition that they were in, he left. Got here early after a morning stroll grabbed some treats to and a coffee Love this place! Great made to order coffee and the lady making it is just the sweetest as she cares so much if the coffee is exactly to the liking of the customer, as she's willing to adjust or remake as needed. The coconut peanut butter has ruined me. I will now only eat coconut peanut butter. I stopped by for coffee at 5am on my to the north shore, this was one of the only places open that early. I was a little surprised by the store, I was expecting a cafe with seats, it looked more like a warehouse with boxes everywhere. Who cares though, the product is most important and they've got some yummy stuff, Marc was behind the counter, and he was awesome. For that early, he was super friendly and very ready to assist and make recommendations. I got a coconut latte that I enjoyed and a guava malasada that had the perfect balance of sweet and tart, that I gobbled up that morning. I bought the coconut peanut butter, lilikoi butter, and pineapple jam. My biggest regret is not buying many more jars, had I opened these while there, I would have went right back for more. This place is located in the condos we stayed at, and so glad it was. Coffee was great, early opening hours, but the pastries!!. They were so delicious. This place was open at 5 AM, so I decided to make the 1 mile walk from my hotel. I was really looking forward to their croissants and breakfast sandwiches. This bakery was located on the lobby floor of our hotel and we're so happy we stopped by! The smell of the baked goods, which they bake on site was the first thing that drew us in. We were staying in the hotel this place was located at and we were surprised by how good this place is! Every night when we would be coming back to the hotel, it smelt like freshly baked cookies, brownies and pastries. Decided to stop in one morning to grab a few things. Six stars! An absolute hidden gem in Waikiki. The experiences I had here are what makes me think Hawaiians are some of the nicest people in the world. I was in town for only a few days and came back 3 times for coffee and baked goods! The coffee is brewed with a local Hawaiian bean and has the smooth yet bold flavor most people crave in coffee. The macadamia nut latte was outstanding. It was a little sweet for me but I asked what they could do and they added an extra shot and less sweetener too. Maleko is a quaint little shop that has a fantastic selection of fresh baked pastries and local goods. We tried almost everything and it was delicious. Our favorites were the coconut muffins, and palm leafs pastries. When it comes to service this place is unmatched. The owner was amazingly kind, asked us where we were visiting from, what we were planning to do and gave us recommendations. I know for a fact I will be back to see them on my next trip out, and if your visiting you need to stop in and grab a delicious baked good and coffee. Super cool spot, the owner is super down to earth, humble and friendly, the coconut peanut butter is ridiculous delicious, no palm oil, if you're into peanut butter, this will become a regular stop, the rest of the pastries are legit, no frills just good ol sustenance. The coffee is reasonably priced. I just really dug the place and Malekos attitude and demeanor. The ambiance is just a walk in joint small and utilitarian. We got samples and without even asking. How NICE!!! We tried the malasada with guava and blueberry spread on top!!! Oh my goodness, what a delight! I would have never thought to combine these two together but it was so good. Our first coffee from here was the macadamia iced latte and I don't know if we will try anything else since this was made perfectly by Auntie. I also tried the coconut pineapple...can I just get these delivered to California daily?! lol. I am always looking for the pineapple and coconut combo in California in many food products and for one it's so hard to find or it's not done right. This is the perfect spot for grab and go since they don't have seating. They also have other small items for souvenirs like coconut peanut butter which I will be purchasing towards the end of my stay for small souvenirs for people back home. Called in an order Decafe cinnamon honey latte 4 shots on ice w/ splash of cream. When I went in to pickup it seamed that both workers were very confused and a bit overwhelmed. Nevertheless when I got home and opened the bag of coffees. I got 2 iced drinks that looked the exact same. 2 Large iced americanos. No latte No splash of cream in the shots Couldn't tell which one was decaf. A Dixie cup of cinnamon on the side and a plastic container of honey on the side. And they charged for everything! This is a run-down (vintage?) takeout-only shop with coffees and pastries. Expresso was very good. House coffee was very weak. Malasada was not good at all; a lump of dough rolled in confectioners sugar. There is a lot of foot traffic through the shop so I guess you need to know what to order. read more

Quality/Quantity - Sadly they were out of the malasadas, something they are well known for So we got a few pastries. Sadly after she heated them in the microwave, all the pastries seemed "flat." The flavors were still there but the texture was gone. First morning I came here and bought their malasadas, a bear claw, and a few coffees to take back to the hotel to those sleeping. Frankly when I come to the islands I get my malasada fix. The bearclaw was good, but the malasada from Maleko was slightly more dense then I prefer. To me, contrary to what anyone says, Maleko is open 4am-Noon every day! So if you are on West Coast time or are an early morning person this is the place for you. So it is easy access for those staying at the Ilikai or Hilton Hawaiian Village as the Starbucks doesn't open til 6am. read more
