We had a blast! The setting is unique, antique and covered with interesting details. The jacuzzi was nice and modern, and still felt like Victorian nobility. A few tips. Get to the mansion right at 4 to get first pick of breakfast time slots. You'll be on a 30 minute or so tour of the home when you arrive. There's a fridge, but it's shared and there won't be much room for your food or drinks. However, there is plenty of complimentary food and libations. And feel free to sit in the living room where classical trap music will greet you. And be ready to meet the "bacon inspector" Ellie, the dog. read more

Had a small Bachelorette party there and had a fantastic time! The mansion is beautiful and you feel like you step back in time when you walk through the doors! The Innkeeper Tom was wonderful, and made us feel so welcomed, and is a remarkable cook! Get ready for some small scale Theater!! It's a bed & breakfast, but they also have shows! I'll admit, I purchased a groupon for this. $50 for two people seemed too good to pass up. I thought we were getting dinner, as well, but it was more like a few very basic appetizers - like the kind you'd have at an office party. Ok, it was cheap so I'm not gonna get hung up on the food! It's not a restaurant, after all! And they kept bottles of wine on the table for refills, yay! The actors were pretty good, very entertaining. I was surprised how many from the audience received "secret" cards to participate, it was so many people, like half of us, at least! Although, it was really cute to see people try to act from the audience ;) well... unless they held their cards in front of them and read line by line, LOL! Jeez, memorize a couple sentences... (who am I to judge, I didn't have to do it) We got a tour of the mansion at the end. Very cool vintagey looking stuff. All-in-all a nice evening. read more

This was my first bed and breakfast, so maybe I'm just overly impressed with a b&b over a normal hotel. We were in Milwaukee just to stay here. It was my fiancé and I and our friends had another room here. Both rooms were great. We had the Gyneth Suite. The antique decor was beautiful. I've never stayed at a place that felt so unique. They have some snacks out, different cookies, and also mini fridges stocked with bottles of wine and various beer that is included with your room. As much as you'd like. It is great. The whole place feels like home. The keeper is very friendly. They give a small tour when you arrive, which was nice. If you know some of the history to the mansion, ask about it and they may show you some areas not usually open to guests. The breakfast in the morning was amazing. I can't wait to go back again. We had an AMAZING stay here, we'd come back to Milwaukee just for this place. Julie and Tom were fantastic hosts. We started off with a tour or the gorgeous Victorian mansion, many different artists have contributed to the beauty and ambiance of the Brumder. It comes with a rich history that Julie will tell you all about! The theater in the basement is amazing, we came on a Wednesday so we missed the show but on a weekend there is usually a full house and a show to see :) We stayed in the George suite, and the jacuzzi tub is eeeeverything! We picked a dvd and got to watch from the tub. I could have spent a full day in that tub, it's great. The beds were very comfortable and we had a great rest. We woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs, which was perfect. The breakfast was everything you could want from a B&B and Julie and Tom have great stories to share if you ask them. Ellie the dog is another memorable and welcoming presence at the Inn. We miss her already. 10/10 highly recommend if you want the experience a great and unforgettable stay in Milwaukee read more

I cannot speak for the bed and breakfast, but I attended a showing of "Miracle on 34th Street" in their basement theatre. The players were talented and were able to transform the small space with their acting abilities. As a play attendee, I was also permitted to walk around the first floor. We definitely enjoyed our limited time here at Brumder Mansion, and wish we could have stay one more day to really experience the home since we were out for most of the night. Tom the innkeeper AND chef was fabulous. We loved talking to him and hearing about the history of the home, including his own personal ghost stories - a BIG reason why we chose to stay here (we're paranormal fans). Plus our breakfast the next day was perfect. We were lucky enough to be able to sit in the nook area, which looked like something out of a movie, and of course our breakfast was delicious. We stayed in the George Suite which was beautiful. Again something straight out of a movie. The ONLY reason why I took a star off was the main bed in this suite was hard as a rock, and in my opinion should be replaced. Luckily since we got back to the mansion late, I was exhausted, so I was able to fall asleep pretty quickly. Otherwise, I'd probably be tossing and turning. And for those wondering about the haunts - I personally felt a weird feeling in the parlor room on the left as soon you walk in (once was the office), but that was about it. The BFF mentioned before falling asleep in the other room she heard something that sounded like someone was dragging their fingers across the table - and left her a bit freaked out. All and all - I'd definitely stay here again. Even if they don't change the mattress. :) read more

My bf and I took a a virtual tour of the 4 suites (Georgia, Gold, Gyneth, & Marion) on the site (www.milwaukeemansion.com) before deciding on the red suite, The Gyneth, because it was the most "Sybaris" looking one. The tri-level mansion sits on top of a hill, next to an intricate church (not too far from Marquette University), and features two outside benches on the front porch that overlooks a beautiful garden. (Perfect for lighting a smoke). We arrived at 5:30pm and were over-pleased that our funny and outspoken tour guide, Richard, was "moving right along" with facts about the original owner, downstairs theatre, and the mansion's ties to Chicago history. After we selected our preferred breakfast time; Richard left us for the rest of the night so that we could explore the mansion on our own. We peered inside 2 other rooms (except the one where another couple stayed), admiring the unique character of each design, layout, and antique items. Every room had two terry robes, bath & jacuzzi towels, and typical bar of soap, shampoo, and lotion. I felt like I was transported back in time but with the conveniences of a standard whirlpool jacuzzi and free wi-fi. There was complimentary red and white wine, home baked cookies, and a DVD collection on the second floor. I brought a glass of Cabernet to my red room and sifted through the pages of "A Victorian Bride's Handbook" on the chaise next to the fireplace while my boyfriend toyed around with the temperature of the hot tub. (Tip: bring your own rose petals & tall unscented candles). At 9:30am, we had strawberry & blueberry parfait, bacon, eggs, French toast, orange juice, and a wide selection of tea for breakfast. Normally, my boyfriend hates French toast but the chef, Tom, made the best he's ever had. The breakfast "nook" was filled with natural light and made for a great photo opp. For only an additional $10, you can book the double suite with a shared jacuzz, The George, so if you have a couple friend or in-laws you can invite them to celebrate your wedding anniversary, valentine's day, etc. I was charmed by the entire affair of sipping tea after a relaxing night. A bed and breakfast at the Brumder Mansion is the perfect fun and romantic getaway for city slickers like us. read more

My fiancé and I stayed here this past weekend. The owners and the innkeeper are so great ! The hospitality was unmatched and I will definitely come back! The breakfast is amazing and we got to meet Ellie the dog ! We stayed in the Marion suite which had its own jacuzzi tub which we enjoyed very much. They had complimentary water, wine and cookies on the second floor for the guest. There is parking on the street in front of the mansion but no actual parking lot. The neighborhood is very safe despite what other reviews have said. We have never stayed at a B&B before but will definitely be doing it more often now! read more

I just have to take a moment to write a review for our very first B&B experience at the Brumder Mansion Bed & Breakfast in Milwaukee. My fiancé and I were looking for a quick and romantic night away from the daily grind and at The Brumder and that's just what we got! The booking process was smooth and seamless. Questions were answered over the phone and the one time I called and didn't get an answer, the proprietor, Tom, called me back in just minutes apologizing for missing the call! Remember folks, you're staying in a home that isn't staffed with dozens and dozens of folks like your local chain hotel, so don't expect that! Upon arrival, we were greeted at the door by "Tom". Tom is a charismatic, and some may even say slightly eccentric man. None the less, a wonderful conversationalist and host. He was excited to have us as guests in his "home" and was quick to offer a tour and a bit of history on the home. We saw everything from the parlor to the library to the basement theatre and even the (now blocked off) doorway that led to a tunnel across the street. Apparently, at one point, this basement theater was a speakeasy during the 1920's prohibition era. NEAT! They boast several rooms for your choosing (I believe 4 or 5 in total) and we elected to stay in the Gyneth (pronounced "Gwyneth") Suite. This suite is located on the third floor and features a king-sized bed, jacuzzi, private en-suite bathroom and fireplace. Our only disappointment is that for some reason, the fireplace failed to ignite. Tom apologized and said he had maintenance scheduled to come in soon and that it would be fixed. Not a big deal for us as we had plans to go explore the night life anyway. The jacuzzi is plenty big enough for two to comfortably relax and enjoy the warmth and jets. The bed, while older, was still comfortable enough for us. I brought my own pillow just because I like some of those creature-comforts of home to help me when I'm not in my own bed. In the room was a journal that had notes from previous guests. Some of which say their stay felt quite spirited. We too felt the energy in the house and felt there was definitely a "presence" on at least one occasion. Tom was quick to offer refreshments, suggestions for local food as well as entertainment. If you decide to go out for a late night on the town, fear not as you'll be given a code for the front door so you can come and go as you please. To those who've said in previous reviews that the neighborhood isn't the best -- just because you see someone of a different race than your own, well, that doesn't suggest that the neighborhood is bad or unsafe. We never once felt less than secure and the folks we encountered in the neighborhood were kind, courteous and generally happy-go-lucky folks. You must remember, this is a big city neighborhood, not a rural suburb. That being said, it has residence of all income levels, races, ethnicities, etc. Perhaps the best part of the stay was breakfast! Tom #2 (yes, there's a second Tom) made us a fantastic spread of fruit, french toast, eggs and bacon. I have a gluten sensitivity, and he was most accommodating in my dietary needs. There was coffee-o-plenty, tea and all the fixings. To our surprise, we most enjoyed sitting on the antique furniture and conversing with our host. If you're in the area, check out The SafeHouse or Bugsy's -- both neat and unique places for an evening cocktail! I can't say enough good about the Brumder. We hope to return soon to check out another one of their suites. And to Tom and Tom -- Thank you. We booked the Gwyneth suite and were informed upon arriving that the jacuzzi was not working. Upon reading the reviews here, it seems this is a long-standing problem. The solution seemed to be to either trek across hall to use the Jacuzzi in the next suite (not very romantic) or accept a different room at the same price. We opted to book at this more expensive bed and breakfast based on the room appearance and the jacuzzi feature, so it was a disappointment. It would have been nice to be offered a discount or some sort of compromise, but rather than waste more of the day arguing, we accepted a different room. The room we stayed in was nice enough, but was sumptuously decorated with grandmother florals and Victorian lace which is again, not terribly romantic. The bed was incredibly high off the ground and I killed my shins on the jutting bedposts more than once. The room had a mechanical fireplace, flatscreen TV, and rainfall shower which were all positives, but the jacuzzi in the room was barely useable. Once the jets were turned on, they squirted ICE COLD water into the tub, quickly chilling the whole bath. They were incredibly noisy, sounding like an outboard motor and the internal mechanism made several spots on the tub's outer edges burning hot so it was impossible to just lean back and relax. The breakfast was average, waffles with some flavorful chicken sausage. It was served later than expected so our day got started later than we hoped and we missed part of our itinerary. The Brumder Mansion is a gorgeous house. The downstairs lounges are beautifully appointed in classic furniture and the staircases are grand. But the room shenanigans and jacuzzi failure really soured the whole experience for me. read more

Awesome home from 1910. Copious amounts of woodwork, impressive staircase. In the dining room, a very unique tall fireplace. Fairly clean, whirlpools in most if not all rooms. The breakfast was very nice. We stayed 2 days, and both meals were good. The owners from CA were there for our visit, nice folks. Julie gave us a tour, and to my delight included the basement, which has a theater in the main area. Rumor has it, in the old days, the basement held a speakeasy, with two tunnels to homes nearby, where "upstanding" citizens could sneak over and enjoy the booze. Tunnels are gone now, sadly. How cool is that! Traffic on Wisconsin can be loud, i suggest leaving the fan on at night for white noise. Off street parking nearby. Very near to downtown bars, restaurants and other attractions. The shower was really nice, one of only a few in my travels that I did not need to bend over to wash my hair! Tall ceilings throughout the home. read more

Absolutely perfect. Beautiful building, excellent service, comfortable accommodations - our stay at the Brumder was a little piece of Milwaukee heaven. We were warmly greeted by Tonja, who gave us a tour of the amazing mansion. We stayed in the luxurious Gyenth Suite. Our jaws dropped when Tonja opened the door to our suite....fireplace, king size bed, huge jacuzzi tub, spacious bathroom with rainfall shower head....the list goes on and on. Tonja did let us know that unfortunately the jets were not working in the tub. Her solution....full access to the suite next door! Talk about hospitality! The next morning Tonja served us a delicous, piping hot breakfast and even let us check out a little late so we could take another brief tour of the building. If you're planning a weekend getaway, or need a place to stay when in Milwaukee, STAY AT THE BRUMDER! The prices are incredibly reasonable for the quality of the accommodations and the high level of service. My husband and I found a youswoop for this place and used it for our anniversary--3 months late. It was cute. I am not a B & B person, so I am not sure about the price ranges or what to expect, but I really enjoyed myself. It was clean, comfortable,romantic and strangely isolated even though it's on the main drag. We were able to check in early. The staff was so kind and the energy of the mansion was chill and calm. It was peaceful like a library but it so welcoming that I felt free to roam around. read more

First off, it's in a kind of bad part of town and the parking lot is across the street and half a block away from the house. I didn't feel very safe walking back and forth. The house itself seems a bit run-down. We were moved to a different room because the one we had originally booked had some electrical problem. It was nicely decorated but cramped. The bathroom had a folding closet-type door that didn't shut completely. While I was taking a shower, they came up and told me to shut the water off because it was leaking downstairs! A more appropriate response would be to fix the leak. The next morning, we were told we had to change rooms because the room they'd moved us to the night before was reserved for someone else. Pretty inconvenient to move all our stuff, but the suite we ended up in was much larger and nicer than where we'd been before, so I suppose it was worth it. The mattresses in both rooms were very hard; my back hurt when I woke up both mornings. I also didn't appreciate the fact that they didn't either replace or remove the half-empty shampoo and bodywash bottles from the previous guests. The breakfast however was quite good, especially the yogurt with berries and granola. Overall, it seems like the house needs some work in several areas but the owners are more interested in shuffling the guests around and telling them not to use the water than in making the needed repairs. read more

We ended up here because Peter, the concierge at Pfister Hotel recommended it. The entire bad experience at the racist and sexist Pfister Hotel had left a very bad taste in our mouths. We were badly in need of relaxation, and boy, did we find the right place! We were lovingly welcomed by Tom 1. Tom 2 carried my suitcase upstairs, and Wonderful Tom 3 (Tom Carr), his queen Julie, and Tom 1 kept us feeling welcomed and loved. They fed us awesome food, unlimited booze. On Sunday evening, we were treated to a FREE and awesome play in the intimate basement theater. WE HAD A BLAST. We will definitely visit again. Did I tell you that this place has 3 Toms!! read more

This place was amazing. My wife and I came for Summerfest she we were pleasantly surprised. It's ambiance perfectly reflects the time period that it is decorated to reflect. The building and the rooms have a lot of history but not at the expense of comfort. There is an impressive array of DVDs and blue ray to choose from if you don't want to jump on satellite or Apple TV as you sit in your own little hot tub/bath tub. The owner Tom Carr goes out of his way to make you feel welcome, as if you are a long lost friend that finally came to visit. I would gladly stay here again. read more

Our stay in the Gwyneth Suite left a lot to be desired. We booked our room in January for a stay in late April, and weren't told at the time we made our reservation that the whirlpool jets didn't work (and I've since found other reviews indicating that's been a long-standing problem). The television didn't work and when I tried to call our host to request help, we got voicemail each time we tried to reach them (they did call us back several hours later, leaving us with the impression that there was no host on site). There is no on-site parking for this B&B - we had to park down the street and across the block and haul our luggage back to the home. Also, the home is in a pretty rough-looking neighborhood. Lastly, the breakfast was nothing to write home about - very small servings and tasteless. On the positive side, the decor of the suite we booked was absolutely lovely, the bed very comfortable, and the bathroom was gorgeous! Over all, however, we could not recommend this B&B. read more

I have never been to a B & B before staying at the Brumder Mansion, but I have spent a lot of time in hotels all over the country. I booked the George Suit for a Birthday outing with my husband and wasn't too sure what to expect. We arrived in the early evening and it was an amazing experience from the moment we walked in the door. Tom was an amazing host (and breakfast cook) from beginning to end. The Mansion is absolutely stunning and our stay started with a complete tour and history of the property. We then had complimentary wine on the front porch after getting settled in our rooms and it was such a relaxing experience. Each of the wonderful people we encountered during our stay were so hospitable and willing to give directions, tours, bits of info or even a wise crack or two;-) On a side note... I was aware of the haunted status of this property when I booked the room. Be prepared for things to disappear, doors to open by themselves (including the medicine cabinet in George's bathroom, over and over, and late night footstep back and forth. However, I was never uncomfortable enough to feel unwanted;-) I would recommend the Brumder to anyone who will listen and am already planning a return visit in a different room. read more

If I were rating the building alone it would be a 5 star review, no problem. The Brumder Mansion is just beautiful. I loved the character and the stories about the history of the building. That part was just great. My issue with this BNB comes down to management. We booked our stay through hotels.com and we locked in a rate of $X. When we checked in we were asked to pay about $150 more. Luckily I was able to pull up my emailed receipt and told them no, this is what I was meant to pay. The first Tom was nice and said no problem, I don't manage the books, let me touch base with the right person and we'll resolve that later. OK fine. The next day, over breakfast, I asked Tom 2 (there were like 3 Toms) if we could resolve the issue with the charges. He said something along the lines of yeah, I heard there was a little disagreement about the price. He then says, "Well why don't we split the difference and meet in the middle." Umm no. I'm not going to pay an extra $75 for a stay that I wouldn't have booked if it hadn't been the best advertised rate for that weekend. If they had an issue with the price that hotels.com gave me, they need to work it out with them. It was in no way my fault that they gave me that price and trying to get the customer to make up the difference is just inappropriate. I'm still dumbfounded days later. I finally was able to pay the price that I was promised and we went on our merry way. My other issues - were that they put us in a room with a sink that didn't drain and since there isn't a regular front desk, we had no one to bring it up to. Also, the bed and pillows were awful. I think prisoners get more stuffing in their pillows and the mattress felt like it needed to be replaced several years ago. My neck is still bothering me days later. Also, it's not a deal breaker for me but it should be noted that the neighborhood isn't great. It's a shame that such a beautiful building is located in the hood. Let's just say I'm really glad my husband was a marine so I didn't feel that safety was an issue for me. It wasn't all bad though, the girl that does breakfast is amazing and is an absolute gem - she'd get 10 stars if I could give them. She's an absolute sweetheart and is a great cook. I wish we'd have been able to stay for breakfast the second day. read more

My husband and I visited the Brumder over the weekend, our first B&B experience. It was wonderful! The only thing I wish I had known is that it doesn't seem to be in the best neighborhood but we were fine. Julie gave us a nice tour of the old Victorian home that was very interesting. The house is beautiful. We stayed in the Gyneth Suite and we're very impressed. Fireplace, king size comfortable bed. That's saying a lot since we are used to our water bed. The jacuzzi tub was definitely a highlight for me I soaked for a long time while watching TV and my husband napped. Our room and sheets were very clean the bathroom was very spacious and beautiful. Breakfast was excellent and everyone we came into contact with was friendly. The owners were very accommodating they allowed us to park our motorcycle in their private parking area which was very generous. We will DEFINITELY be visiting again and be referring lots of friends and family. read more

We were informed by email that check in was between 4 and 6 pm., so we arrived at 5:45. After 10 minutes standing in the cold, ringing the bell, I called the main line and was told that I was late. I did not get the voicemail at 5:30 saying that they would be leaving early and I would need to call to get the door code. Bottom line is that had they stayed an extra 15 minutes, they could have shown us to our room instead of leaving us on our own to wander the halls of the dark creepy house. The Gyneth room was just as beautiful as the pictures show, but if you want a romantic experience, you will need to bring your own candles to put in the candleholders by the hot tub. Oh, and bring your own ice and cooler to keep your beverages cold.... Or you can walk down the hallway and a flight of stairs each time you want to get a beer out of the communal mini fridge on the 2nd floor. The romance factor was also affected by the squeaky bed and creaky floor. Wonder what the people in the next room heard? Maybe they can use that $180 toward the purchase of a sturdy bed, and save future guests a little embarrassment. read more

Had a night out planned with my mom and a friend to Brumder Mansion for a christmas murder mystery show. We arrived to the building and there was a sign on the front entrance stating "due to circumstances beyond our control. You must enter throuh the door off 31st street". We proceeded to such door and entered the mansion. We were very rudely greeted by an employee named Marcus. He proceeded to not welcome us but to criticize us for being there before showtime. Our tickets stated the show was to start at 630 pm, we arrived at about 610 pm. We asked if we could wait in one of the sitting rooms to wait for showtime. Marcus sighed loudly and with exasperated annoyance, said he would check and walked away. He came back continued to be rude, checked us in and walked away. We proceeded to wait in the sitting room. While waiting we overheard Marcus speaking to another staff member about the door needing to be locked so that "people" can't just walk in. Then he proceeded to talk about us being in the sitting room. I proceeded to walk over to Marcus. I informed him that his behavior and way of treating us was unacceptable and that we would not be staying for the show. I informed him that my mom had paid for the tickets and he could speak with her about a refund. I then walked out. My mom stayed inside, Marcus informed her that he could not take care of the refund that she would need to get in touch with the entertainment company. She proceeded to tell him of her disappointment and his rudeness. Marcus walked away from her with no apology. We did have one woman there that we could tell was uncomfortable with the situation and tried her hardest to keep the peace. Thank you very much to her. We will never return to the Brumder Mansion for any more shows until Marcus is no longer an employee. This was a christmas outing and due to Marcus it was ruined. My mom who has been to shows here previously with great experience has been very embarrassed by this experience. Very disappointed and hope that the refund will go smoothly. To post this I needed a star rating so I gave a 1 star but I really want to give 0 stars. read more
