My stay at The Iron Horse Hotel was extremely disappointing, especially for a property that markets itself as a boutique experience. From the moment I walked in, the lobby was overwhelmed with a heavy, Axe body spray-like scent--so strong it felt like walking through a middle school locker room. I assumed it was temporary and that my room would be a relief, but unfortunately, it was worse. The room smelled musty, like a house that hasn't been aired out in years. To make matters worse, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls, which is unacceptable for a hotel at this level. Beyond that, the overall cleanliness of the hotel was lacking. For a boutique property, I expected a much higher standard, but the space felt worn and not well-maintained. The bed was hard and uncomfortable, and the towels were rough--far from the soft, high-end feel you'd expect. The most concerning part of my stay, though, was waking up at 1:45 AM struggling to breathe. It genuinely felt like a reaction to something in the room--possibly mold or poor air quality. I initially thought I was getting sick, but after spending a few hours away the next day, I felt completely normal again, which makes it hard to ignore the room as the cause. If you have any respiratory sensitivities, be cautious. I contacted the front desk to explain the situation and was told checking out early without being charged for another night wouldn't be an issue. I even offered to return around noon so they could turn the room, but was told not to worry since they weren't sold out. When I returned later that day, there was no note, and the staff refused to honor what I had been told, citing the late checkout time. While I understand policies, the inconsistency and lack of follow-through were frustrating. I also dined at the hotel restaurant, which didn't help the experience. The food was overpriced for the quality--my salad was warm, fries were room temperature, and clearly sat out too long. Dessert was equally disappointing; the lemon tart was buried under an excessive amount of powdered sugar, making it unpleasant to eat. It's honestly a sad day when I transferred to a basic airport hotel--Hyatt Place Milwaukee Airport--and had a significantly better experience. The bed was more comfortable, the towels were actually soft, and even the shampoo and conditioner were noticeably better quality. On top of that, the Hyatt was spotless, which only made the lack of cleanliness at Iron Horse stand out even more. Overall, this stay fell far below expectations. Stayed at the Iron Horse Hotel with my friend for 1 night for Summerfest concert and since we drove in, we used their valet parking with the fee. The next morning, valet went to retrieve our car (sidenote: plan for a wait for valet when dropping off and picking up your car) and they came back and told us it was BROKEN INTO with the WINDOW SMASHED. I hadn't realize it was just parked in an open parking lot near the hotel. Got a police report, got the valet manager contact information and also found out another car in their valet lot had gotten broken into the same night. Tried to get hotel to file incident report about this and did not receive response. Valet manager, Marcus Tatum, was hard to keep in touch with because he didn't respond in a timely manner until I tried texting him as another avenue. Then when the insurance claim was denied through the valet company, and I tried to check with the valet manager to see if there was anything the hotel could do to ease the hardship of dealing with this event, I was ghosted. I also tried to contact their insurance (off of the simple email notification that my claim was rejected) to gather information how they did due diligence in exercising reasonable care while my car was in their custody like: - Was it secured in a lot or monitored in the lot? - Was the lot gated or fenced? - Were there security cameras? --------I received no response with this request. Overall, it was a terrible experience and out $600 because my car's window regulator was also broken with the window so I had to pay to get the part and labor for that as well. I didn't file with my insurance as with advice provided to me with the cost of the damage that it would jack up my insurance rate. The fact that the hotel didn't acknowledge or try to make anything right about it tells you everything about them. BEWARE IN STAYING HERE WITH YOUR CAR. (Oh and they also double charged us for the valet service (through the app and hotel) and I'm still waiting on the hotel charged valet fee to be refunded. Ridiculous. Solid Harley Davidson theme, with one racer on the floor, and two new bikes - one with all electronic stuff (and hand controls which would make a fighter pilot cross their eyes) and one with a more traditional 4" speedometer with digital mileage tracking. On to the hotel. Warm and comfortable is what it strikes you as. Lots of wooden beams, brick, and good lighting. We arrived and were provided with our room key. We got up to the room, and see the pictures. Nice room, comfortable bed, but some interesting issues. My wife was a little cold, so she set the heat up. We were in the room, it didn't get warmer, so I set the heat up to 75 (she had it at 72) and it STILL didn't get warmer. Well, I figured it would be good for snuggling. At night, it got warmer. We weren't moving to pick up the motion sensor, so I don't know what was going on. The room had a safe, a refrigerator, a nice flat screen TV with channels, a regular bed and a sofa-bed. We just used the regular bed. The blackout blinds were nice, some of the top clips were off, so you had to work to get them to black out the light, which on this fall day was BLASTING IN. Quiet location - we heard one siren, and no people compensating for something revving their engines. Double sinks in the bathroom made it easy for us to both get ready to go. We liked it. Beautiful old building with a gorgeous interior and a lot of history. Motorcycle motifs are everywhere and the restaurant is awesome. They also have a pool table by the bar. The only thing I found lacking was the valet service. For such a nice establishment they really need more guys on deck. read more

Can...can I live here? This hotel was so perfect for what I needed. Sometimes I'm bursting with energy, ready to set out, explore, and dive in deep. This time? I needed rest. I needed good WiFi to work with. I needed coffee right when I woke up, and no outdoor runs.. a gym and some treadmills. I needed a bed to sink into, and a shower with real water pressure. Check, check, check, check and check! As noted by many before me, the vibes here are really nice. Cozy, cool, warm, inviting.. it's got that part down. My only drawbacks were mild. My hotel key cards didn't work upon checking in, and it kept happening. I had to go to the front desk multiple times but ultimately they remedied it. They also didn't offer room service for dinner, but make note, a delivery app brought local fare right to my hotel door. I did utilize it for breakfast via the hotel and my jaw hit the floor when I saw all the charges and fees associated with it, be warned! Otherwise, it was cozy, safe, beautiful, inviting, easy to get to other areas of town, and altogether wonderful. I can't say for sure if there was a to nearby to walk to -- it feels more industrial around it, but I think if you're in the exploring mood you can find something for sure. What a gorgeous property and such nice staff. We really enjoyed a weekend 2 night stay at the lovely Iron Horse hotel. Front desk staff happy to greet us. Waitstaff in both restaurants were amazing! Attentive, friendly and kind. Great staff really make a difference and this place has all of them - thank you all! I enjoyed perfect cocktails at the bar and compliments to the bar staff who made me a divine espresso martini and a Tom collins - both were made perfectly, absolutely balanced and now I'm spoiled because this bar knows their stuff. Loved the beautiful themed decor. Room was lovely, with platform comfortable beds and so quiet day and night. We got complimentary robes in a nice sized closet. Tons of space with benches, chairs, table and beautiful slate countertop including a huge minifrig. I loved the hot waterfall showerhead with great smelling shampoo and body wash. Decor is luxe with dark slate, black and brown leather. A giant wall mural and silver metal art pieces above the beds. I didnt care for artwork in hallways but to each their own. Lobby seating is ample with oversized leather sofas and tables to chill in. Beautiful American flag and motorcycle decor in lobby - Wow! We loved this! We also loved the chill atmosphere on the campus, and how good we slept at night. On our second day our room cards stopped working. This was quickly fixed by friendly front staff. Plenty to do within walking distance, lots of restaurants including a top-notch tapas place, a great brewery, Harley Davidson museum, a lovely bakery and more. There wasn't even toilet paper provided. After waiting over 40 minutes for assistance, I was moved to a second room that unfortunately was just as unclean. I reported the conditions again, and housekeeping was eventually sent. The housekeeper was kind and apologetic, and did her best to improve the state of the room. By this point, my friend and I had nearly missed the concert we had traveled several hours to attend due to the delays and unsanitary conditions. The situation worsened significantly when I later discovered bed bugs in the bed. I took multiple photos for documentation. When I informed the front desk, a staff member named Shia kindly took notes to inform the manager, but there was nothing she could do in the moment. I was told to wait until the manager arrived around 8-9 a.m. No real solution or compensation was offered. Feeling unsafe, my friend and I had to bag all our belongings and leave the hotel early in the morning. The stress and lack of sleep triggered a seizure, and my friend had to drive us hours back home. Once home, I had to thoroughly wash and sanitize every item to avoid bringing the infestation into my house. I later spoke with the manager, Edwin, who refused to provide his last name. He acknowledged the report and said a sample had been sent out for testing. He mentioned that since the hotel allows dogs, the bugs "could be anything," and told me to check back in 5-7 days for results. That response was both unprofessional and dismissive of the clear health and safety issue I experienced. This was not simply bad service--it was a public health concern. I'm reporting this incident to the local health department, and pursuing a full refund through the booking platform and my financial institution. Please take this seriously. The Iron Horse is a comfortable hotel, but we experienced an example of customer service that was so awful that we feel it necessary to warn future travelers of this hotel's rudeness and incompetence. When we checked in, my sister and I were told clearly and explicitly that we needed only my credit card for "incidentals," because I had pre-paid for both rooms, and both rooms were reserved in my name. So I gave the front desk clerk my credit card to cover both rooms. Flash forward to 10:30 last night. My sister had gone to bed early because she was exhausted from the trip, and was fast asleep, but was startled out of sleep by a loud POUNDING on her door. She stumbled to the door in her pajamas, and was greeted by a clerk who said she had to give her a credit card for her room, even though we were told when we checked in that my card covered both rooms. Then the clerk claimed that she had tried to call my sister's room repeatedly, but her phone never rang -- my guess is that the in-room phone was broken, as they usually are in most hotels. So my sister shuffled downstairs in her robe, half-asleep, and turned over her card. (Needless to say, she hadn't used any "incidentals." What incidentals? There wasn't even a mini-bar in the room!) The rooms themselves were fine, and the bartender who served us an early dinner was very friendly and efficient. But what is the ONE primary purpose of a hotel? To give its guests a good night's sleep. That's it! My sister and I am very disappointed that this hotel could not provide even this basic function to a paying guest. read more

PSA: Buckle in, this is a long review. My husband and I got married at the Ivy House two years ago (4.16.22). We stayed at the Iron Horse after, as well as a lot of our guests after doing a block with them. Although it was on the pricier end, we felt that the location and atmosphere was worth it. And it was, two years ago. Now, I would not recommend any aspect of this hotel other than the room itself. My husband booked a room for our anniversary which fell on a Tuesday night. He requested the same room we stayed in when we got married & it was available. Yay! There was no acknowledgement of our anniversary on the phone, or even when we arrived. No gift, no coupon, not even a "happy anniversary" from the person working the front desk. Disappointing start. We had drinks and dinner in the bar. Online it shows tacos & tequila on Tuesdays, and there is a happy hour menu. We were there during happy hour and it was a Tuesday. Neither of these things were mentioned to us, and when I asked our server, she had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. She said happy hour is for the outdoor restaurant. Weird. I asked the front desk person and he said both should be available. The bartender cleared this up for us (kind of). I was under the assumption that the tacos and tequila menu was a good deal. The bartender suggested a tequila to us so we got two margaritas. They were in the smallest glasses and we found out when we got the bill that they were $17 a piece. What? We would not have ordered those... the bill was incorrect and confusing but they took some money off to make up for it. At least the cheese curds were good! Our room was gorgeous and clean. Room cleaning services walked right into our room without knocking at 7am so that was annoying. Other than that, no complaints about the room itself. The absolute worst part of this stay was the room service breakfast we ordered. It was appalling. I cannot believe they served us that food. We ordered two mimosas, biscuit and gravy, a side of bacon, and chicken and waffles. The total was $120 with tip (ouch). We were really hungry and looking forward to this since it took over an hour. The biscuit and gravy included one biscuit (if you can call it that) which was burnt. There was minimal gravy and then a bunch of scrambled eggs thrown on top. The chicken and waffles came with an over easy egg. This was really confusing. It's not mentioned on the menu, and I was not asked how I'd like the egg to be cooked. My husband hates runny eggs. Not only was this random egg splattered all over his meal, IT WASN'T FULLY COOKED. Actual egg yolk membrane was on this plate. The bacon was the only edible portion of this meal. The mimosas were good, but not for $16 a piece. I called the front desk to talk about how disgusting the food was. He credited us half of the meal. We essentially paid $60 for two mimosas and bacon. I guess giving your guests salmonella isn't worth a full refund. We will not be spending future anniversaries at the Iron Horse. This really bums me out because we loved the idea of that tradition. I'm not sure what is going on over there, but it's not worth your money. My husband and I will check out the Pfister next year and pretend that's where we stayed after our wedding. read more

This used to be in my top 5 hotels in the country, especially when I visit only for work trips. I looked forward to each stay and always told people about it. That sentiment is gone. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. The kicker and why I will never return is that there was a wedding party here and I was given a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the lobby. The guests returning from the wedding started trickling in at 11pm. They were enjoying partying in the lobby until 3am. I called down twice to ask that the staff move them to the bar area or out of the lobby. The staff said there was nothing they could do as it was a public space. I got absolutely no sleep. If you plan to have a large wedding party here, book those guests on the 2nd floor so they can deal with the noise from their friends, not people who are there for work. When I checked out at 4am and my disappointment with the front desk staff I didn't even get an apology. The outdoor patio bar is still amazing with wonderful bartenders. A friend and I met at the hotel bar for their Happy Hour special, half off apps and certain cocktails. We ordered a second round of drinks 15 minutes before the special ended, but it took the waitress 20 minutes to deliver the drinks - at full price. We were one of three tables, so it was not busy. When questioning the server, I was told that the bar computer automatically charges the prices, and the order was placed one minute after the special ended. Wow. This was price gouging at its finest. We stayed at the Iron Horse 2 nights over the Memorial Day Weekend and opted for overnight parking. The signs say $44 plus taxes and fees. When we checked out Sunday morning and asked for the bill, the hotel said I would get a separate bill from their 3rd party parking service. The charge on my credit card from PMC Parking was for "$111.57." Even with a 6% parking tax in Milwaukee, that seemed high. When I called the company, the gentleman who runs the parking service told me they not only charged me a mystery service charge (he couldn't explain what that was for), but THEY CHARGED ME AN EARLY CHECK-IN FEE. FOR PARKING. How does that work exactly for freaking parking? Isn't parking supposed to be 24 hours? When I expressed my outrage, he replied "I know. I hate it. I'm sorry. It's the company that charges it." This added insult to injury, as the Iron Horse had ALSO separately charged me a $25 early check in fee for checking in at 1:30 on Friday (check in is 3pm). What ever happened to that being complimentary if your room is ready anyway? The parking guy was nice enough to credit me back the parking early check-in fee bc he was so embarrassed by the gouging. But honestly, this was ridiculous. DO NOT USE THE OVERNIGHT PARKING AT THE HOTEL! There is parking right next door for half the price. And while I'm on it, I won't be staying at the Iron Horse again. I used to stay here before Covid, and it was a wonderful place to stay. But the Iron Horse seems to be another sad casualty of the pandemic. I'm assuming that to cut costs, they only hire staff that seem like they're barely out of college. There is very little service...nobody even looks up at you as you enter the hotel and step off the elevators. I realize it's a tough business to stay afloat, but this is the goddamned HOSPITALITY industry and it costs nothing to make guests feel welcomed and seen. When you're paying $500/night for your hotel room, you expect a little more. To be fair, the room was big and comfortable and quiet. But the fact that they charged me for early check in--TWICE--and the weak service rubbed me the wrong way so much. We'll be staying at the Pfister from now on. read more

make sure when you call the hotel to make a reservation you are actually speaking to the hotel. my call got forwarded to a 3rd party (Hotel Planner) in which the hotel won't admit. Ended up paying twice for my room and hotel offered no refund; they said they never got paid from the third party, maybe, maybe not. I had multiple conversations with the hotel and they have wiped their hands clean of it. I called the so called 3rd party which is NOT in the US and they were no help at all. I am working with credit card merchant currently to see if there is any recourse. read more

Long lines to check in when we had a wedding to go too., which by the way, gave this hotel a ton of business! Front desk would not allow us to check in early unless we paid a $10 per hour early check in fee (SO TACKY) OR agreed to provide a five star review. Really? Also, my brother did not receive a text that his room was ready until 4:52, after the wedding started! So you will gladly take our money if we get there early, but you don't get anything in return if your room is not ready on time. Also, the time kept changing. Our email confirmation said check in at 3:00. The first lady said anything before 3:30 was considered early check-in, while the next gentleman said 4:00. They didn't even know the rules, just that they should charge extra for nothing. He had to use another room to get ready. I would never stay here again. Update- July 2025-we have been staying at the IH several times a year since it opened in 2009-we have loved, supported and championed for this hotel-if we ever heard anyone was going to MKE we told them to stay at the IH-that's why this is so sad. Physically the hotel may look the same but the spirit is gone-service is subpar, no help with luggage or greeting when u arrive, the minibar is gone and amenities are sparse-no toiletries, shampoo and body wash containers in shower are empty ( which u realize when ur naked in the shower). This has become a 2-3 star motel that is still charging 5 star prices- we paid about $1500 for two nights- the Keurig in the room was broken-2 coffee pods in the room-2 bath towels-restaurant was closed Friday night because they booked a wedding- which is fine but this was the annual HD homecoming weekend and they are charging premium prices. Heard that the IH was taken over after filing for bankruptcy- I dont think they can make it back after they have lost so many loyal customers (as I am now reading other reviews). When speaking to the employees- they seem to agree that management has been lacking and the original IH is gone . To be fair- the manager Tom McKenney offered to reduce our bill once I explained how disappointed we were-then I found out he took $125 off the bill..thanks Tom that's 8% of the bill!! Honestly-I am sad-it's the end of an era and we will miss the original Iron Horse :(( read more

The Iron Horse is at the top of my list for favorite hotels I've stayed at. Every single area is beautiful and uniquely designed. I stayed there for a weekend in the summer for a friends birthday. We all really enjoyed our massages and the patio in the back. And for being so close to the freeway, we didn't hear traffic at all! A plus for those with dogs: The hotel is dog friendly and will even write their name on a little board by the front desk so everyone knows the cuties who are visiting! I will be back! :) read more

I am posting this to help others with information for future Mother's Day Events. I was looking online and tried looking for some kind of data on the upcoming event and I tried calling Iron Horse Hotel about the ASH restaurant with no return phone calls. The Brunch was all-you-can-eat for $80 a person. The Prime Rib was good and the king crab legs also. The craving station was a bit slow and a bit later, I realized they also were servicing pork butt/ham. The overall spread was small for the price and there was no melted butter for the crab legs. Ash Restaurant needed signs on food displays and signage for guidance for in/out of the line. Also for Buffet/Brunch, there was a 20% Gratuity added to the receipt (for two guests) so add another 50 dollars to the bill (gratuity and Tax). about $200 for two. Next year for Mother's day will do a home barbecue. read more

We stayed here for my husband's birthday weekend. Stayed on the top floor loft with a beautiful view of the city. Plus the decor of the room was amazing, I would love to live there! lol the loft room had beautiful wooden ceiling, bathroom had a HUGE shower! It even had a full variety of a mini bar if you chose to take some. If you choose to not take the $40 valet parking they offer, the only other option is a parking garage that charged $16 per night but you can't leave or you'll have to pay again. But all and all, definitely would come back here again to stay. We didn't experience the bar downstairs but would like to next time and play some pool near the bar. We DID eat breakfast the next morning in the library which was fantastic. I got the Bagel & Lox with a Bloody Mary and I can't wait to go back and get it again. Best breakfast I could ask for. My husband got the Iron Horse breakfast with eggs and bacon and a side of pancakes. He said he would order again, maybe not the pancakes for the price. read more

Would not stay again. We received a very generous gift certificate for the Iron Horse as a wedding gift. We ride a Harley and frequently ride to Milwaukee for lunch or an event as it is a nice drive from our residence. We originally wanted to ride the bike up in July or August and stay overnight, maybe go to a Brewers game. Well, Friday and Saturday stays during "event" weekends in the summer, like SummerFest, which is every weekend, the room rates are over $500. Yes. Five. Hundred. Dollars. For one night. We are NOT $500 a night hotel people. Instead we got tickets for a Brewers Cubs game on April 30th and it was too cold and rainy to ride the bike. So we drove. Disappointing when the hotel especially caters to bikers. Our premium king loft room was a bargain $400 including taxes. I started writing an epic dissertation review and realized I could sum it up pretty briefly. For that kind of room rate, we expected Ritz Carlton level service. They didn't/couldn't provide it. They muffed the check in (couldn't find our reservation even when I provided the confirmation number), took an uncomfortable amount of time checking us out using the gift card, the shuttle to the ball game broke down and we had to constantly ask for things that should've been already provided- more coffee, a spoon, more water, salt and pepper, a napkin and several times those things never came even after we asked. I'm not sure if the hotel management recently changed or the staff needs more extensive training but the service was just so disappointing. A comparable room for the same night at The Pfister would have been $260, probably $300 with tax and I know the service would've been top notch. read more

The issue is regarding they're advertisement of military and first responders rates. Their website provides very little clarification as to what the qualifications for military would be if it's only active duty or if veterans also are eligible for the particular rate. In addition they have a first responders rate which doesn't clarify if it is restricted to local police, local EMT, local firefighters or if it's also extended to federal police, Federal agencies and things of that nature. When I called the booking number and asked for follow-up they were very adamant that it would be across the board anyone who's in a public service capacity would qualify as well as anyone who is military active or veteran would qualify but they advise me to contact the general manager for clarification. Contacted general manager asked the same line of questioning and was told no to veterans and you had to be a local police local firefighter local EMT to qualify for the rate and you had to be attending their hotel for a work-related event. I think they need to remove this offer bc its misleading or perhaps re-examine who they are identifying as military and first responders and provide better clarification in their advertisement because we recommended this hotel to a plethora of other veterans and other federal law enforcement who couldn't consider it whatsoever. read more

We met some friends from Ohio in our hometown of Milwaukee and decided to meet and stay at the Iron Horse Hotel. The Iron Horse is an upscale, dog friendly, motorcycle friendly hotel that pays homage to Milwaukee's Harley Davidson motorcycles in theme and decor (and they offer free parking just outside the front doors if you arrive on your bike). We came by car but that's okay too -- you can pay for valet parking, or use a nearby ramp, or park on the street (but be sure to double check local regulations). The Iron Horse Hotel is in an old, multi-story factory building in a regentrified part of town. It has been extensively renovated (it looks and feels like new construction) while preserving original components such as high ceilings and structural timbers that date back nearly a hundred years. Our room was tastefully decorated and impeccably clean. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. The WiFi was fast and free. On the afternoon we arrived we enjoyed cocktails and hour of conversation at their outdoor patio bar. My martini was properly mixed and chilled and the price was fair. The next morning we had breakfast at their restaurant. My biscuits and sausage gravy were satisfactory and quite filling (without adding optional eggs). My wife ordered oatmeal and asked that they hold the sweet topping-- which they gladly did -- and she was soon fueled up and ready for the day. While our breakfast was not particularly outstanding, it was much better than what you would find at a typical midwestern breakfast joint. All in all I enjoyed staying at the Iron Horse Hotel and hope to stay there again. read more

Great vibe. Smells amazing! Overall beautiful main lobby. The local artwork displayed was also very cool. Free pool table was a great touch as well. The only negative was the food. Food was bland and the wait staff needing work. There were only 3 guests in the room for breakfast and it's took forever to get service and the food was just alright. Every other aspect of this place was great. read more

500 a night gets you this view Room not cleaned in 2 days I tracked down cleaning lady for new towels First 5 times were great memories Last 2 were exact opposite so we are throwing in the towel and will now explore another location for our stays every few months - don't know what happened here - thought it was our place for life !!!! read more

I recently came to the Iron horse for a large business meeting and the hotel was gorgeous. The space they provided our company with was absolutely amazing, moving furniture around to fit our needs. Parking was incredibly easy thanks to Luke, valet is definitely the way to go. read more

Great boutique hotel seconds away from the Harley Davidson Museum. Staff was very friendly and the hotel interior design is wonderfully unique. My rooms was spacious and had great amenities algo with a huge mural painted by a local artist that really made the room feel personal. Will definitely be back. read more

Nice boutique hotel in a really old building. But everything is modern and up to date. We had a really nice room with a huge window in the bathroom. Lots of light for getting ready. The room itself was a good size and clean. The bed was comfortable. We were tucked away in a corner and it was very quiet. Would stay here again. read more
