My stay at The Iron Horse Hotel was extremely disappointing, especially for a property that markets…read moreitself as a boutique experience. From the moment I walked in, the lobby was overwhelmed with a heavy, Axe body spray-like scent--so strong it felt like walking through a middle school locker room. I assumed it was temporary and that my room would be a relief, but unfortunately, it was worse. The room smelled musty, like a house that hasn't been aired out in years. To make matters worse, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls, which is unacceptable for a hotel at this level. Beyond that, the overall cleanliness of the hotel was lacking. For a boutique property, I expected a much higher standard, but the space felt worn and not well-maintained. The bed was hard and uncomfortable, and the towels were rough--far from the soft, high-end feel you'd expect. The most concerning part of my stay, though, was waking up at 1:45 AM struggling to breathe. It genuinely felt like a reaction to something in the room--possibly mold or poor air quality. I initially thought I was getting sick, but after spending a few hours away the next day, I felt completely normal again, which makes it hard to ignore the room as the cause. If you have any respiratory sensitivities, be cautious. I contacted the front desk to explain the situation and was told checking out early without being charged for another night wouldn't be an issue. I even offered to return around noon so they could turn the room, but was told not to worry since they weren't sold out. When I returned later that day, there was no note, and the staff refused to honor what I had been told, citing the late checkout time. While I understand policies, the inconsistency and lack of follow-through were frustrating. I also dined at the hotel restaurant, which didn't help the experience. The food was overpriced for the quality--my salad was warm, fries were room temperature, and clearly sat out too long. Dessert was equally disappointing; the lemon tart was buried under an excessive amount of powdered sugar, making it unpleasant to eat. It's honestly a sad day when I transferred to a basic airport hotel--Hyatt Place Milwaukee Airport--and had a significantly better experience. The bed was more comfortable, the towels were actually soft, and even the shampoo and conditioner were noticeably better quality. On top of that, the Hyatt was spotless, which only made the lack of cleanliness at Iron Horse stand out even more. Overall, this stay fell far below expectations. Between the condition of the room, air quality concerns, cleanliness issues, and poor service recovery, I won't be returning.

We had easy access to downtown by car, transit, or walking, and even walked to Lakefront Brewery without issue. The lot for parking was small and a little tricky to maneuver, but it was available and there was also street parking if needed. The room was so spacious and with a hot tub, sleep and sitting spaces, wifi, and everything we needed. The breakfast options covered all dietary needs and included a made to order omelette station. We enjoyed our stay here.

The real problem I've had is after our stay. We had a bit of a billing dispute since the room I was staying in was paid for in a block of rooms for a wedding party in advance. Since discussing that issue with the front desk attendant on-site, we were told that the Accountant and GM would "look into" the issue on their end. After calling today I was very rudely told essentially that there was no problem for them. Doesn't solve my issue since I was charged as well as my parents. But that doesn't seem to bother them. I've never been treated the way I was by a customer facing person, and I guarantee it wouldn't have been that way if I wasn't on the phone compared to in person. In the end I guess I'll be left to dispute charges online and/or file a BBB complaint. Would not recommend.

The neighborhood has old Milwaukee feel, like true residential feel. This place was restored roughly 25 years ago. It was originally built in 1886 and condemned to be torn down before they saved it. It took 7 years to really revive it. The grounds, the building, the details, the architecture, and sheer care that went into this place is very evident. It is so beautiful and the hospitality is even beyond. Truly a wonderful experience. I don't stay at bed and breakfast much because I usually opt for the hotels and it's amenities but I must this place definitely has changed my mind---although it is unique. I stayed in Sophie's room and it was very well maintained. The water pressure is actually very good and you can definitely come and go as you please. The breakfasts are delicious. They will use vegetables from the yard for omelets or Andrew's famous French toast w/ "brewed" vanilla. They are wonderful company and extremely cordial and down to earth folks. If I ever come back to Milwaukee---because this was a random spur-of-the-moment trip--I would stay here again. Definitely recommending it to others!

It's inside a gazebo so no worry about bugs- and they had music playing to set the mood (some Dean Martin!) The fireplace inside was ready to light, but since we had such great weather, we didn't use it. The jacuzzi tub is a fantastic place to relax after sitting out by the fire. They provided so many touches to make it a fabulous stay-- chocolate, toothbrushes, bubblebath, even flowers! We opted for brunch and received a HUGE tray of food-- bread, muffins, fruit, sausage, cheese, juice. We didn't see many of the animals but heard the rooster :) The history of the building is awesome, too. But I won't share it here- since you should go find out for yourself! I travel to Antioch monthly and have stayed here the last three trips. The innkeeper, Sherri, greets me at the door with a huge smile and makes me feel welcome and not intruded on at the same time. Great bartenders and unique drinks. The "art" part of this hotel is very much evident right when you walk in. They have an artist in residence, a gallery with is regularly changing exhibits or installations. This amazing former cigarette vending machine turned an art vending machine. A bright and colorful design which provides another opportunity to explore art but different mediums. I always make sure I have cash in hand to grab a piece or two from this brilliant addition to the hotel. Such a wonderful feature and an asset for Milwaukee!

We were there for our wedding night and the day before and also spent time in their spa the morning after. The morning of our wedding we went out onto the private balcony overlooking the forest full of wildlife and beautiful bird calls, we sat in the chairs and said our private vows to each other. It made our day so relaxing and easy and everyone staying there was so sweet and happy for us. The spa was super cool! They also have this foot massager that was so nice for the morning after because my feet were hurting!! The hot tub was the best but the sauna and steamroom were also so relaxing. Overall this place is great and we saw all types of people staying there, an anniversary trip, a babymoon, not just for your wedding. But it was super romantic. We will be back for our anniversary:)
