This was our first trip to G&M Farms in Livermore and it was incredibly special and actually quite the fun surprise off the freeway. As we were coming home from a night away, we wanted to stop and have a moment with our little amongst the pumpkins and support an East Bay pumpkin patch. As we were about to pass Livermore, we saw signage and oodles of fun happening for G&M Farms so we pulled off. There is so much to do here! You can grab a red Radio Flyer wagon and truly go hunting for the perfect pumpkin within the patch itself, or if you're on the hunt for more smaller pumpkins/gourds there is a whole gift shop/farm store that is so incredibly cute for basically every pumpkin vibe you can imagine. Plenty of spots to stop and take pictures with friends or family. There's a corn maze, drinks/snacks like mini donuts, popcorn, and corn dogs, and speaking of corn..oh-em-gee! Truly wanted to share a review for this reason alone. Looking for a sensory activity for your little? There is not a sandbox, but a giant CORN box for play. The adults also tried it (essentially we just put our feet in and it felt surprisingly really nice. Something unexpected and truly unique, fun, and interactive. We also noticed a few other activities on the pumpkin patch side like a tractor/train ride and I'm not sure if there was a petting zoo? Regardless, worth a trip if you haven't made your pumpkin haul yet. Plenty of room for strollers and very spread out. Can't wait to make the corn box an annual tradition. Then we got to see where the cheese is made and even personalize a goat cheese of our own. This was a really unique and interesting experience. I will have to come back in the spring when they have baby goats. The little shop is cute and sells their goat cheese and other products. As a mother, and a teacher for TK/kindergartners, and with a 80 year-old Owner I believe the gentleman running this tortoise ranch needs a bit of an update. He is very much a man of the times which is fine because he reminds me of my old grandpa who was short into the point but somewhat blunt. His wife also repeated everything he said and reiterated it numerous times and would get more annoyed at my five-year- old classroom children as they, like most children do, would forget things. They both seem to get rather irritated with the younger group of children. I felt bad for the children getting reprimanded, and I did have to raise my own voice to ask the wife to talk to the children in a nicer tone, and I felt bad for the children as well since they forget things right after they said. That being said, the older fifth graders that went on this tortoise tour rather enjoyed it, but they found a few vocabulary words funny, and later asked us, " what's a drug sniffing dog?" And " how can sex change an animal?" which were both statements spoken to both (younger-TK & Kinders AND older 3rd-5th graders) Group of children. Ughhhhh Since we're in Silicon Valley, verbally speaking to children for 20 minutes about concepts of tortoises or any animal without a visual aid is very cumbersome. My TK and kindergarten children cannot sit still for a five minute digital book let alone sit still for 20 minutes and three of them started to fall asleep as they sat crisscross, applesauce, and nodded their heads off. One of my five-year-olds could not sit still, and he got up a couple of times and the owner reprimanded him and raised his voice saying, "hey you take a seat! " it was rather alarming to my five year-old classroom child so I had to whisper and talk to him off to the side so he didn't start crying. The tortoise feeding is very interesting and they have strict protocols!! The owners are very aware that most parents do not watch their children, but as a educator/teacher, we are constantly supervising our children, so the ratio was 1 to 14, and we would only allow about eight children in the tortoise area with four teachers watching. We rotated through our children since we had a rather large group, but it seemed to bother the owners because not all the children were in the pin at the same time. It seemed a bit chaotic but then again we also had a group of about 35 children in a rather small space. Overall, I do not think we will ever come back to this particular tortoise ranch, but they were rather interesting, and I really do worry about the cleanliness of everything since the tortoises walk, eat and poop, and pee all in the same vicinities of where we were walking. We made sure all the children wiped off their feet at the park nearby, and some of them stepped in tortoise number two, so they were rather disgusted, and their shoes stunk. On a happier note, I'm glad some of the children got to see tortoises granted at least five of my children were terrified of the animals and their hard shells. Lol then again they are four and five years old and everything is new to them. We would've been better off going to the library.Hee

I am not making this up-- if you check out the parking lot you'll see a long narrow strip of land You've found Envivva Farms! I had a chance to talk to the nice lady who is the owner and she explained what she's trying to do here. She's growing tons of vegetables, on a place that other otherwise would just be dormant land. Bravo bravo! For those of you who do farming or gardening, you know it is a ton of work. The farm is looking really great. When you go to Calicraft be sure to check out the farm. If you see a long skinny strip of land with lots of vegetables on it, you're in the right place. If you see the owner, be sure to say hi.

The place is quite large, so you'll need to pay for their tractor ride ($4) to get from station to station. We came around 10:00 a.m. on a Monday and the place wasn't crowded. We picked up our baskets and then let the kids place around their tree house for a little bit before getting on the tractor. Our first stop was peaches and apricots. The peaches were pretty low hanging, and the kids were so excited to pick them. However, there weren't that many ripe ones at this time. There were more ripe apricots, and they were sweet and juicy. Our next stop was the strawberry station where there were plenty of ripe strawberries. Our last stop was the cherry station. Our driver directed us to the last row where we could find ladders. Sure enough the cherries were plentiful and so sweet and juicy. There were even kid size ladders for the littles ones. The fruits were 100 times better than what you'll find at the grocery store, and the kids had so much fun picking their own fruits. I definitely enjoyed being here, and I've been here twice so far. First time my bestie took me here to celebrate my birthday two years ago. To get this experience going, you'll check-in with the staff and let them know you want to do the sunflower experience. It's $20 for 6 sunflowers and they give you looper (thing used to cut the flowers), sign a waiver, and you can into the two different sunflower fields to pick which ones you like. If you want to walk the fields, without picking flowers, it's $12 per person. Once we paid, we grabbed our looper and headed out. We had the dogs with us, and they had a blast just walking around and taking in the scenery. We found the sunflowers we wanted, and headed back toward the entrance to cut and clean the ones we picked. When we were finished, they wrapped up our flowers in a bag with some water so they could make the journey back home with us. The staff here were amazing. Since it was our first time doing this, they were patient with us and explained their best tips to cut and clean. Very nice people all around! Definitely a fun coast side experience and a great thing to do when the weather is as nice as it's been. If you are planning on going out into the fields, highly recommend bringing shoes you don't mind getting dirty.

The large jumping arena, the small covered dressage court and the full sized mirrored dressage court and lunging arena are groomed and watered every day, sometimes twice a day. They have an aggressive fly prevention system and haul off all manure. There are hardly any flies and you don't leave the barn covered in dust, which is rare on the west coast. When I was at Sunny Hill, most barns on their road had between 7-10 cases of pigeon fever, Sunny Hill had none. Jennifer the owner, goes above and beyond in horse care. They will even feed your horse out of a slow feeding hay bag so he can eat at a more natural rate throughout the day. Top quality care, pristine boutique facility, oh and did I mention you can ride a short distance to Mt. Diablo trails? Not bad..
