For Oxford it is alright with large portions at a decent price. The "BBQ" brisket doesn't really seem like BBQ to me but more like huge slab of meat that was cooked in the oven so definitely more of a Memphis style than a Texas style brisket. I first started eating at this place long ago when they were at their first location near the highway and this most recent visit was the first time I have tried it again since I left Oxford back in 2003 and it still tastes exactly the same.

The catfish was lukewarm and my French fries and okra were cold, but they are out under a lamp.

Heard we had to try Ajax, the diner, not the soap. We stopped in for lunch before heading to Nashville airport to come home. The diner is about what you'd expect inside. Old, kitschy and full of decor. We sat in a booth an were greeted by a waitress promptly for drink orders. Cokes and waters. They deliver the coke in a neat Ajax cup. I ordered the chicken fried steak. Wife ordered the chicken and dumplings and step son ordered catfish. Everything arrived very quickly and everything was hot and southern deliciousness, except the corn bread. The corn bread was dry and not very good at all. Pretty sure it was yesterday's leftover bread or someone needs to pull it 5 minutes sooner from the oven. Unanimous at the table, Everton e had garb corn bread. No big deal. The chicken fried steak was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. Gravy was great and the red beans and rice side was awesome. All great flavors. Wife loved the chicken and dumplings, good flavor and tender chicken. She got a side of sweet potato casserole and loved it. I had a bite and it was delicious for certain. Step son had the fried catfish, he is not a big seafood eater but he absolutely loves the catfish. I had a big piece and it was cooked perfectly and tasted great as well. The staff was outstanding, the service was great and the food was excellent sans the cornbread. Ajax is a neat little diner in the heart of Oxford. It's a little pricey as is everything in this college town, but it was worth the visit.

It was later in the evening, and I wasn't sure how many places would still be open that late elsewhere in the state, so stopping in such an iconic college town felt like the right move. Unfortunately for me--but probably great for business--it happened to be a home game for Ole Miss Rebels baseball, so the entire area was packed. I tried a few places before finally managing to grab a single seat at the very end of the bar at Back 9. The atmosphere was immediately fun and energetic. Between the sports simulators and TVs broadcasting games throughout the space, it felt exactly like the kind of lively college-town sports bar you'd hope to stumble into on a busy game night. The staff was clearly stretched thin because of the crowd, so I don't hold the slower pacing against them. If anything, it reminded me how differently high-volume bars function from city to city. There are probably a few things college-town bars in general could learn from the efficiency of Nashville's Broadway spots, but that's more of an observation than a criticism of this restaurant specifically. The menu is exactly what you'd expect in the best way possible--handhelds, flatbreads, comfort food, and crowd-pleasing bar favorites. I ended up ordering the Chipping Cajun pasta, and honestly, it completely surprised me. The balance between the spice and cream sauce was excellent. The bell peppers, onion, and garlic added depth to the flavor while also giving the dish a nice variety of texture. The seafood was evenly cooked and genuinely delicious throughout. It actually reminded me of one of my favorite dishes back in Nashville at Darfons Restaurant & Lounge, which I definitely wasn't expecting from a busy college-town sports bar. Overall, Back 9 ended up being one of the highlights of my drive through Oxford. If you're passing through town, especially on a game weekend, it's absolutely worth stopping in and trying for yourself.

I sat at the bar and stared at my salad for a long time as it sat in the window. Tonight I ordered the Caesar again and said I would order my entree later. Server informed me my salad was almost ready. At that time I ordered my entree- red fish. I received my salad after a few minutes after that. Just a few minutes later and not quite half way through my Caesar my redfish showed up and dropped mid salad. I let My server came to check on me and she kindly apologized and I told her it was just feedback I thought would help because it seems like it's a problem. Just feedback. My server got "sat". She said she'd bring me water and got backed up. I ended up refilling my water at the bar. This is a long review but it has a happy ending, I promise. Her name was Julie. I sat at the Duce next to the window right by the bar. Julie told Me she saw me get my own water. She said she was going to take care of my bill. Surprised that my feedback resulted in this level of recover I asked if the restaurant is taking care of my check or if she was. She said the manager offered a small discount on the salad but she was sorry I had this kind of experience and wanted to make sure I Came back and gave them another chance. She said this was her passion and wants to make sure her guests are taken care of. I insisted I pay and explained I was there on business so I wasn't paying for it myself. After several time trying, I just said "thank you and I wished everyone cared as much." That was by far the most sincere service recovery I ever encountered and it was at the cost of the associate. Manager never game to the table. I don't recall seeing anyone that fit that description either. This is a mid to upper tier price point "nice" establishment so expectations should reflect that. Julie owned it and took one for the team. I felt horrible she felt she needed to do that. I hope she doesn't do this often. Experience not so good but I experienced worse. Food was okay to good. Julie was outstanding. I don't carry cash but I gave her everything I had. The only response I need to hear that would make me change my mind is if Julie was refunded for my check.
