She suggested that I make a note in the "Instructions" section when ordering online... (& by the way, when you order, please do so by going directly to their website. The first thing I want to smell when I walk into a restaurant is the smell of good food cooking. Unfortunately, the smell of whatever cleaning product they use on their floor or tables was overwhelming. This was my first time there, and I thought about leaving as soon as I was seated because the smell of their cleaning product was quite strong. I mentioned it to our server, and she didn't seem to understand what the problem was. Luckily, there was a window above our table that could be opened and the breeze coming through the window made it tolerable to stay and eat. I ordered the yellow curry, and my husband had the pad see ew, together with the cucumber salad and jasmine rice. We had the Thai iced tea. We shared the fried banana for dessert. Everything tasted delicious. The ambiance was nice and the service was fine. However, we won't be coming back. They need to use an odor-free cleaning product. Thai food and cleaning chemicals don't mix. UPDATE: I have received a response to my post from the owner of Bua Thai Kitchen and am told that they will correct this issue. I First, let me say the good first. Nice setting for taking pictures. Different backgrounds for some nice pictures. Now... I am sorry, food here is not to my likings. The papaya salad was very salty, to the degree I couldn't swallow it. Talked to the server and she exchanged a new one to us, but still very salty. The pad se ew did not have much taste. As a new customer, I was so excited to try their food since I haven't had Thai food for 6 months when I'm back from Thailand. I was craving for the authentic food so much. But when my Tom Yum arrived, I was surprised there's no coconut milk inside, the soup is very thin and there's no shrimps in at all. Also just one piece of tomato....I can't believe for 13 dollars they just make it like this, it's not really respectful to Tom Yum at all. Then the boss said I should've asked about the coconut milk and also the shrimps. But I should never need to ask when I'm in Thailand and other restaurants at all. So basically I have to cook myself as a chef if I wanna have authentic taste of Thai food, the boss and waitresses got so mad and inpatient with me only bz I know what's real Thai and fake Thai. They said there were two kinds of Tom Yum that I should've known if I come here often, but this is my first time, they blame on me because I didn't come here often..... is this a joke? How can they do this to customers? The plus: parking lot The negative: the consistency of the curry was very watery and there was little protein. Even stranger when you try to reheat the curry and it has the consistency of water. Overall just bad! We've had Thai food delivered from here before. I was excited to order again. Unfortunately, it was all very disappointing. We had: Shiitake mushroom dumplings The cook on them was fine. But I am not exaggerating when I say there were no mushrooms in them. They were filled with the green part of a scallion onions. Pad Thai with tofu It wasn't terrible. But it was really just average. And I felt it had very little flavor. Pineapple fried rice I had selected pork as the extra meat. We got chicken. It was really lacking in cashews and raisins. Again, this dish seriously lacking flavor. Back Rib Massaman Curry This is the one I was most excited about ordering again. It was also the biggest disappointment. The meat looked literally gray. I think it was old too. They were far fewer peanuts than the last time I ordered and had less flavor... and now I'll move onto the spices. Regarding spices in our orders. There was very little to none. I had requested medium twice on two dishes. But I had ordered Thai spicy for the back rib. What's worse is that you actually pay extra to receive Thai spicy. I felt they paid zero attention to any of the spice selections that I had but I got charged for spice. Even though it didn't exist. So, here's yet another Thai restaurant to take off our list for delivery. I lost several hours of sleep last night. After giving my dog the bone from my supposed beef back rib I realized it wasn't a rib at all. I'm going to take a picture of this bone now. I don't know what I've consumed. It's terrifying. The name of this establishment is already a minefield. Photos on Yelp from June show that this restaurant was Moana's Thai Coconut House before it settled down as Bua Thai Kitchen. And please don't conflate it with the nearby Bua Luang Thai on Solano Avenue! Some clarification is provided by the article https://www.berkeleyside.org/2022/08/01/berkeley-oakland-new-restaurants-july , which writes "Longtime locals might always associate this rounded hut on San Pablo with the former Potala, but the building's transformed, blue-hued, spruced-up look and feel matches the optimism of its new owners, who opened what was very briefly Moana's and is now Bua Thai Kitchen." Meanwhile, this building once housed my former go-to Thai restaurant, Ruen Pair Thai. I never set foot in Potala but was happy to revisit the site of the late lamented Ruen Pair. The interior is much much nicer than I remember it, and the parking lot looks amazingly serviceable. (It was a mud hole.) We called in our order ahead of time (after first phoning Bua Luang Thai by mistake) and came by for pickup. Sadly, I saw only two people dining in the restaurant, at an indoor table. (There are three tables outdoors in front if you like fresh air and don't mind the San Pablo Avenue traffic and the view of Pet Food Express across the street.) This restaurant is beautiful (and serves good food -- see below); it certainly deserves more dine-in customers. Fortunately, Bua Thai Kitchen was taking at least one other to-go order when we arrived for our pickup. About that good food: we ordered the seafood eggplant dish, the yellow curry, some spring rolls to start and a dish of spicy green beans. I hadn't had Thai food in like forever and was really delighted with what we brought home. Because I'm really rusty on Thai, I can't tell you reliably that Bua Thai Kitchen is a standout. I will say that I suspect that it is! My one quibble: because three of our dishes came with white rice, we were given rice in three separate thimble-sized containers. It would have been much more useful to us (and less wasteful of paper) if we had received a single box with the full volume of rice. Organized a friend's birthday party here and got the inner private room. Originally wanted to sit outside, but agreed why the restaurant recommended against it (tables are on the patio facing San Pablo, which can get noisy, smoggy, and sun in the eyes). Although we made reservations for our party of 7, they still needed time to set up that space which we had asked for ahead of time. Good food for good company, clean ambience, and nice presentation. Everything was satisfying (except the spicy wing appetizer was a little too spicy for half our guests). Even better was the Groupon deal that we could use. I love food period and Thai food is at the top of the list. I heard about this new place opening up so I had to try it out. Doesn't look like much from the outside but inside looks really nice. Plenty of room and the decor is nice. They only serve beer and wine which is good either way for me. We ordered the Basa Chicken, Yellow curry with shrimp, and the oxtail soup. They have been here for just a few years and they have become popular in the neighborhood. They are just next door from my work. I have been there twice and have had a good experience. Lunch hours were quieter than the dinner hours. But the staff have always been nice. Very little to no wait time to be seated. Both Food and service are good. We were excited to try Moana after seeing it newly opened and it did not disappoint! We dined in and the restaurant interior was lovely and tables were decorated with care. For appetizer we got the taro puff which filled my taro loving heart with joy. My partner got the Tom yum special which was filled with flavor. I ordered the spicy eggplant with pork. This place is a gem in Albany! Growing up in Thailand, I am so used to spicy and authentic Thai foods. Bua Thai Kitchen has captured wonderful flavors and presentations with a timely manner in a very friendly atmosphere. I am Vegan and they went beyond my expectation. Created and modified their dishes accordingly. We were able to order very quickly (but did not feel rushed) and always had a full water glass. Most importantly, the food was great. We got the salad roll, the green curry, and pad see ew. The salad rolls were fine, but we weren't expecting to be blown away by them. They just paled in comparison to the rest of the food that we got. The star of the green curry was the eggplant, which was so rich with flavor. The curry had a nice kick to it and lots of tasty veggies. The pad see ew was so delicious and savory.
