    - Ambiance - 4/5 The interior gives off a classy vibe -- though it also feels like they ran out of funding before fully finishing the look. Everything was clean and well-kept. A few TVs around if you're into watching sports while you eat. - Service - 4/5 I was seated right away after walking in, and the food came out relatively quickly. Smooth and efficient service overall. - Food - 4/5 Dish Ordered: Pho Dac Biet (XL Combination) * Taste: Great quality meats with a nice assortment -- tendon, tripe, brisket, and more. The broth was tasty, though it didn't quite have that long-simmered depth. The noodles, however, were cooked perfectly. * Smell: Neutral, nothing off-putting. * Presentation: Standard, nothing fancy but neat. - Additional Comments - There's something about sipping hot bone broth and breaking a sweat that feels amazing -- like it pushes all the cold out of your body. If you're ever in Berkeley, definitely check this spot out for a comforting bowl of pho.

So disappointed and we love Vietnamese food . The appetizer combo was nothing Vietnamese . The 3 bowls of different pho were all disappointing. My meat and tendon bowl was maybe fat and a few slices of meat. The normal meat pho also had very few slides of meat. The tripe was hidden in the 3rd bowl ! They gave us so little sprouts for 3 bowls ... very disappointing. And the soup was very salty .

Came here for a weekday lunch. There is quite a juxtaposition between the gruff but attentive server and the sleek modern appearance - faux marble tables and very comfortable upholstered seating, between the mounted televisions and the evening jazz playing. But somehow it works. The murals depicting Vietnam were a nice touch, too. The seafood pho was delicious, with a choice of egg or rice noodles, and if you order tea, the teapot comes with its own candle warmer. Cute! Lots of patrons engaged in conversation or sitting quietly absorbed in people watching or reading. I'd return.

Dont let the photo fool you, for a $20 plate of "sliced pork" over rice, the total amount of pork fit entirely on 1 spoon. I understand portion size is subjective per person but for this price point it seems ridiculous. Staff was also very inattentive disappearing entirely for large amounts of time leaving multiple guests, not just us, wondering how to pay our bill.

Service was great! The owner and waiter were so nice! The waiter was very tentative. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue and it was really good but I actually went there for the Ca Kho To (Braised Catfish). I have been wanting to try that dish and it did not disappoint. It was sweet and savory and ughh so damn good! My sister ordered the Pho and usually she would have to add a lot of lime but the broth was PERFECT! I would definitely come back and highly recommend this restaurant. The picture doesn't do it justice.

While there are plenty of great options for Vietnamese food in the bay area, this place really stood out to me on my lunch adventure. The service was quick and friendly, and before long I had an excellent bowl of filet mignon Pho Bo presented to me. The broth was perfectly balanced with all the subtle notes of savory and sweet playing with the thinly sliced and perfectly raw meat that was cooking in the soup right as it dropped. The noodles were a healthy serving and the toppings were fresh. I would come back here in a heartbeat anytime I'm looking for an excellent meal! Would love to try some of the other dishes as well as I'm sure they'd be just as tasty.

Pho Tasty in Berkeley is quite alright. They dish up Vietnamese cuisine specializing in pho. Many vegan options on the menu. I enjoyed a hearty nourishing bowl of the Vegetable Pho Chay that came with heaps of veggies in a vegetable broth and added tofu. It was quite alright. Service was very friendly along with being accommodating. There are two screens in the restaurant that were showing sports including a tennis game and the Lakers vs Grizzlies basketball game. I saw LeBron and company against the Grizzlies with Scottie Pippen junior who is a dynamic 23 year old guard who while shorter than his hall of fame father still has serious game. Scottie Pippen attended the game so enjoyed my bowl of pho and got to take in some hoops. Recommended for tasty nourishing pho in the heart of Berkeley with plenty of vegan options.

Pho Tasty opened in The Happy Holigan's vacated space. Interior totally furnished with wall murals. Offerings: Filet Mignon, tofu/vegetables, poultry, seafood, pork, stir fried noodles, charboiled meats, fried rice, pho Bo, pho ga, clay pots, apps, Eats: Bun Rieu (18) -a mix of tofu cubes, vermicelli noodles, ground pork meatballs, cha lau in a tomato & "fresh crab" broth. Didn't taste crab, tasted a lot of shrimp paste. Topped with scallion, cilantro, basil, iceberg lettuce, jalepeno slices, lime squeeze. -blood cubes, pig feet not noticed. The former due to many patrons dislike of it. *tastes similar though missing a few key items. Shrimp paste was the main reason for bun Rieu taste. Leftovers: -would have ordered something else if I had read ingredient list throughly. -difficult to access location due to routing on street traffic.

Not too busy on a Saturday, very clean restaurant. Workers are super nice. I got the vegetarian pho and it was great, broth could've been better. Would visit again!

This corner keeps rotating businesses... Used to be Gecko Gecko Thai (hence the giant mosaic geckos) for a while, then some other short stints, then Happy Hooligans briefly, to Pho Tasty today. Def an upgrade but I imagine it's hard to stand out in the sea of Viet spots in Berkeley ._. Always empty... This location is only a street over from both University and Shattuck, but already sees drastically less foot traffic as it's tightly packed into the concrete jungle. We visited after a trip to the Saturday farmar on Center St. Service was slow, it seems like only one person is working here? AVOCADO CRAB RANGOON: There's very little crab flavor, mostly bland avocado and unseasoned wonton wrapper. The sauce is SO syrupy-sweet, tastes pre-made. CHICKEN RICE PLATE: Too salty, almost hard to eat. Chicken portions are also small for the price. Their fish sauce is extremely briny and acrid, not as sweet or as well-balanced as other spots... Didn't complement the rice or chicken at all. My bf's Seafood Noodle Soup was ok, good broth but not much seafood. Tigon is better.

    Wonton Noodle Soup

Looking for some good ole Noodle Soup comfort food and read the reviews about this place so thought I'd try it... I got the Wonton Noodle Soup with Egg Noodles. It came with a very generous amount of Shrimp & Pork Wontons with Sliced BBQ Pork on top with Bok Choy. De-lish!!!!! I also order the Egg Rolls but for $14 for 5 which came out to roughly $2.80 each and I thought it a bit pricey (maybe because I did a delivery order) but they were good! Over all this place is a little more pricier than other Vietnamese/Pho restaurants but the quality of food is superior! This place is definitely on my repeat list!

When I first heard of Great China, I assumed it would be more of a casual neighborhood mom-and-pop…read morespot, but I was definitely wrong. It's actually a popular, higher-end Chinese restaurant in downtown Berkeley, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated on a weekend only 30 minutes after opening, it clearly does very well. One note: I often see long weekend lines forming even before opening, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or arriving early. We came here with one thing in mind: Peking duck. It was prepared beautifully, with the exact nostalgic flavor and crispy skin I was hoping for. I also loved the way they presented the thin pancakes--half-folded and slightly overlapping each other--so you didn't have to worry about peeling each layer apart and accidentally ripping them. The dipping sauce and green onions were provided on the side, though I do wish they included thinly sliced cucumber to complete the experience. My husband also ordered the fish, which turned out soft, delicate, and delicious. It was a nice complement to the duck and rounded out the meal really well. My only real critique of Great China is the pricing. You're definitely paying a premium here, but the food does taste authentic and well-executed. Given the limited competition in the area, I can see why it feels justifiable if you live nearby. That said, it may not be as worth the splurge for people who already have easy access to more traditional, old-school Chinese restaurants.

The cumin lamb was no longer 90% peppers but a generous portion of lamb and a good ratio of peppers. The crispy chicken appetizer was delightful. The dry green beans had a snap. I thought everything was solid top to bottom, but here is my ranking in descending order: Braised Eggplant Tofu Clay Pot - I generally like this dish everywhere and they have a good version on this here - seasoned well, tender eggplant, and nice texture on the tofu Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings - non-traditional "salt & pepper" - thick coating of tempura-like batter, very peppery (black pepper), and wings set on a bed of sauteed onions. Sesame Bread with Green Onion - tasty, but unlike other "da bing" I've had. This was on the thin side, meaning you have a lot more crispy outside compared fluffy inside. This was also lighter on the green onion. Classic Shrimp & Chive Dumpling - can't go wrong with dumplings - an order comes with 12 dumplings, each filled with big pieces of shrimp. I liked the texture but it is a little different - looser filling instead of a solid meat/veg ball on the inside. Original Braised Pork Noodle Soup - I liked the flavor of the soup and noodles. There was a ton of meat (diced) but they were on the tough side.

Growing up in Wisconsin in a small city at the tip of Lake Superior Chinese restaurants were just about the only ethnic food available throughout the country. Exotic as they may seem to have been and widespread Nationally which is partly due to the Chinese building the railroads cross country. Chicago Cafe (Woodland, CA): Founded in 1903, academic research suggests this spot near Sacramento is the oldest continuously operating Chinese restaurant in the U.S. and California. These days I prefer Vietnamese or Thai all day long because the flavors are better and more variety and cleaner with respect to how the dishes are prepared. Well, I stumbled into this spot today and I was rather blown away. Large portions, low prices, excellent variety and top notch service. And a huge portion for only $13.95. I had the vegetable rice, complementary hot sauce and a nice iced cold five dollar Heineken. OK, this is a spot to put on your list. See you there!!! And now here are some interesting factoids: While thousands of Chinese immigrants first came to the U.S. to build the transcontinental railroad in the 1800s, it was the subsequent decades of legal discrimination that forced a marginalized community to turn the restaurant industry into their primary means of survival and citizenship. The "Lo Mein Loophole": In the early 20th century, U.S. courts recognized restaurant ownership as a pathway to obtain merchant visas. This loophole sparked a massive boom in the creation of Chinese restaurants, particularly luxury "chop suey palaces".
