I was planning on doing myself. I don't wear a lot of makeup anyway, I can do it myself. Yadda yadda yadda. This is one of those decisions that in hindsight I would never question again. I wasn't really interested in futzing with fake eyelashes on my big day. We paid for a good photographer and even though I have good skin, every single imperfection and discoloration and anything will show up on the high quality photos and BOY AM I GLAD I sprung for getting my makeup done. I can tell as my photographer took pictures of me before and during my makeup application and I saw flaws and spots and pinkness in my skin (around my nose etc) that I never realized was there. All of that vanished under flawless makeup Sarah applied. Sarah took my suggestions for color and ran with them. She is meticulous and has the utmost attention to detail. She does not rush. She does not over do it. In the end my makeup was FLAWLESS and added beautiful shades of color to my face without looking like I was wearing too much. I have never felt so beautiful in my life. Her application of fake lashes will put any other makeup artist's to shame! I couldn't even tell where my lashes were and where the fake lashes were upon scrutinizing in the mirror up close. They would have stayed on for DAYS. So would the rest of the makeup. She uses MAC/high quality waterproof that will not come off in rain or with the inevitable tears, etc. On a side note, she is just the type of person you'll want on your big day. You really feel like she is focusing on every detail and she is not rushing or distracted. She really makes you feel like she is dedicated to doing her best work for you and 100% focused on you. She was early to our appointment. I could go on and on. Sarah has a working relationship with Honey Salon and can do makeup in their *beautiful* space. Very convenient as I did both my practice sessions and my big day hair and makeup in the same spot. She charges a fair price - you really get what you pay for with this one. I emailed every makeup artist I could find in the area, frantically trying to find someone. Ashely saved me from despair when she messaged me back very quickly, although she was out of the country. She was responsive to emails and we quickly got the contract signed. She was unavailable, but informed me that her assistant, Megan, would be available. Megan was early for the trial and came to me at the hotel (the day before the wedding, as that's the only time I was available). She did an excellent job and was super receptive to feedback! She arrived early again the following day and set up while I was getting my hair done. She did an absolutely EXTRAORDINARY job on my makeup. She integrated all of my feedback from the trial (all personal preference, I just didn't want any eyeliner) and I felt beautiful, but still natural. The makeup stayed on all night, which was amazing! She also provided me with a cute touchup kit, Ashley had picked out a lip color for me - which was PERFECT (based on the photo I sent, which I wanted duplicated, from my previous trial run with the other makeup artist). She also included lip gloss, cotton swabs, etc. I am just so happy that things worked out the way they did so I was able to have Megan do my makeup for my wedding day. I asked this exact question to every salon while trying to find someone who offered it. Not once did anyone tell me they don't do permanent straightening. Instead, they booked me in without explaining that what they actually offer is a smoothing treatment, which is completely different. I do want to say that Caryn was very kind to charge me less because my hair is shorter. That was genuinely thoughtful, and she is a very friendly lady. But even with that, the main issue here is the lack of clear communication. If a salon doesn't provide the service someone is asking for, that should be made clear upfront. I only found out after the fact when my hair didn't turn out the way it would have with a permanent straightening. Their response felt dismissive and focused more on their "no refund" policy than on the fact that I was never given the right information in the first place. The stylist said she went over the process with me at the appointment, but that never happened. If it had, I would've immediately realized it wasn't the permanent treatment I asked for. Instead, I ended up paying for something I never wanted. Overall, the miscommunication, the lack of accountability, and the unwillingness to make things right left a bad impression. Even though Caryn herself was kind, I still wouldn't recommend this salon if you want clear communication and a place that truly listens to what you're asking for.

I moved up to Bellingham recently and took considerable time to find a salon that had good reviews…read moreand find a beautician that was a colorist with at least 10 years experience. I don't know that many people in the area yet, so I went primarily on reviews. I made an appointment with Emilly Thompson with Grotto Hair Salon. My appointment started at 12:45pm and it went until 6:15pm. First of all, I have NEVER sat in a chair for 5 1/2 hours getting my hair fully foiled/highlighted and cut! Normally that is a 3 hour appointment. I had a sinking feeling that she was having difficulty getting my color right. Before you go into the salon, they give you an opportunity to share pictures of what you want and to write out what you are looking for at the appointment. I actually loved that. It tells me they will do their homework before you go in, make sure they have the right products on hand and have a good idea of what you want. If Emilly didn't think she could do what I was asking, she could have told me instead of wasting my time. The outcome of what I received after 5.5 hours in the chair was nothing close to what I was asking for - I showed her pictures again of what I wanted before we even started. She gave me a platinum blond, fully blended. Not remotely close to what I was asking for. I attached a picture of what I wanted to this review along with what I received the first and second time. I was exhausted after all that time and was late for a meeting. Paid my $250 plus a tip and left. I sent a message to the owner the next day and Emilly reached back out and she was able to get me in a day later. My appointment started at 6pm and ended at 9pm. Another 3 hours to correct my hair and it still wasn't right or even close to being right. First of all, you don't tell you client right off the bat that you think their hair looks gorgeous when you're in there to get it corrected. This is not what I wanted. You also don't tell you client that if "I had more time, I could have had better products available" for the second appointment. Unprofessional and clear she didn't know what she was doing. My head was back in the washbowl for almost an hour while she tried different toners to get the color right. Unbelievable. At the end of the appointment she literally had nothing to say to me. I told her this still wasn't what I asked for and disarmingly I asked her what she thought and she really had nothing to say. My hair is brassy blonde and I just dropped a lot of money on almost 9 hours of the result I received. So incredibly disappointing. I honestly don't like writing negative reviews but decided people need to be warned. I wrote the owner (Karly) two emails sharing my experience and never heard back from her. Again, how unprofessional and non customer oriented. If anything, she should have called me and asked me what she could do to make it right. I don't believe I'm super fussy about things - definitely a type B personality and go with the flow...but when you're spending $250 on highlight and cut, you should be getting a pretty darn good result. I WOULD NOT recommend The Grotto hair studio in Fairhaven. There may be other good stylists in there but how the owner handled my situation is unacceptable in my book. All in all, it's just such a bummer and very disappointing.
