Wow! The gentleman working was a tremendous help. He was such a pleasure to speak with about all things food and spices. My favorite so far is the espresso salt. It kicked my Triple chocolate toffee cookies to the next level. They have lots of unusual spices and are very knowledgeable. I live in L.A. and it is hard to find places that have unusual flavor combinations of spices. I will be back!!! You will not be disappointed. How do you even begin to describe the amazing-ness of this magical place? The joy of stepping into a store that harkens back to times long gone? Discovering flavors and scents in different sized jars and the light from the front window falling beautifully on amber-hued and crystal clear jars. Yeah. Prepare to feel as though you are stepping into the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Yep, I said it. It's that quaint and charming. Anything you need for your culinary palate is there and if they don't have it, they can probably get for you. The spices you have been buying in a grocery store are old, dusty and overpriced. PLEASE, next time you are missing or running low on a spice, go to Buck's and stock up on your usual, everyday spices and then discover something new and something different by chatting with the owners of the store. 100% pure awesome. I love the Pike Place spice shop, but this one-woman show is even better. Why? - She will sell you any amount, even a "pinch". This is great because who wants to buy an ounce or cheese powder or whatever? You can have just enough to make something once or twice, then get fresh spices again. - She does mail order. Excellent! - Daaamn good selection, including a lot of way out there but useful stuff. Making your own curry powder or need berbere or hing? She's got you covered. - Her salt collection is the bomb, including not only the alderwood smoked that is fairly common around here (table salt at Steelhead Diner) but hickory smoked and at least 20 more exotic salts. Yes: Bacon Salt (tm) is here, and you can get just a small amount. I loves me some salts. You might miss it looking at the spices, but cookware is also for sale here: nice looking woks and cast iron pans in all sizes, as well as some tea ephemera. read more

Like no other place in the world! Buck's Fifth Aveue is full of hand-labeled mason jars containing more variations of every spice you've ever guessed at, and scads you've never imagined. It is the sort of place where one walks around marveling and exclaiming about what's on the shelves--and hanging from the shelves, and from the ceiling, and leaning against the walls. They had rainbow colors of salt, dark powders, delicate seeds, dried things in packets and eclectic items of decor and cooking equipment strewn everywhere. Spices are sold in bulk; the amounts you need are kindly weighed and placed into small plastic bags (and they label them so you don't forget what is what!). Some of my favorite finds: - foot-long cinnamon sticks - nutmegs - tamarind paste - red Hawaiian salt - whole dried lemons - green cardamom pods - Worcestershire powder - Pondicherry red peppercorns - rose water We talked to the owner(s)? and if they don't have it, they will get it for you. (Their prices are excellent compared to your everyday grocery store; you only buy as much as you need.) You can even send in a recipe and she'll get all the ingredients together and mail them back. Their website is not inclusive, so call or email about anything you don't see. I'll be ordering from them regularly. read more

My wife and I love this spice shop. It has the feel of walking into a wizard's laboratory, filled with countless jars and vials of exotic potions. In reality, the shop is a truly unique place that has pretty much any kind of spice and tea that you can imagine from all over the world. And if they don't have what you are looking for, just ask and they'll get it for you. Most recently, we bought a couple vanilla beans there to make our own homemade vanilla with a recipe they gave us. And the vanilla beans were far cheaper here than anywhere else we've seen. The spice selection is giant and you can find almost anything! If they don't have what you are looking for, they will either direct you to Radiance (down the street, with a pretty good selection of spices & teas & such) or order what you're looking for. I always admire the shops downtown for their respect of the local economy. You're charged by the ounce, but can always get smaller amounts. No problem. It can add up quickly, if you're restocking a large spice collection, though! I highly recommend the Cajun Red Eye, the Chimichurri rub, the Habenero Sea Salt, & the Applewood Smoked Salt. They have the best selection of salts that I've ever seen! They also have cookware, miscellaneous utensils, tea sets, containers, & treats for both cats & dogs. We bought some containers that fit on top of each other & the ladies printed out labels for them! So nice! I wish the containers weren't plastic, but not a big deal really. I highly recommend the 85cents or $1 bag of Stinkies (dried fish flakes) which our animals LOVE! The major issue I really have with this place is that it feels/looks dirty/old. Also, every review seems to love the owner, but that's not the feeling I have. Maybe she just doesn't like me or something. But she seems to be rude. Best Spice Shop ever! No frills, not fancy, just honest quality spices and herbs, curated by people who understand and care about their product. I am a visiting chef, and I found amazing flavors that I've not seen elsewhere. I also bought tools, such as the seed toasting iron needed to enhance their flavor. I both love this place and also think it is just ok. There is an AMAZING selection. Truly phenomenal, especially for Olympia. The problem is the quality. A lot of the inventory is clearly old - faded and losing its aroma. Part of the problem is that they keep everything in clear jars - good for looking, bad for longevity. This is an example of why Mom and Pop stores are unable to compete. I needed some vanilla powder for a recipe and the shop is closed for the year without any notification other than a 3in sign on the store's front door. What is the point of maintaining a website if closures are not listed. Furthermore why have a phone line if no information will be listed, it is not hard to record a simple message. My business and the business of my friends is now lost because of their inability to run a simple business. read more
