Deep dish pizza done wrong... again.

The taste is still kind of there but the pizza has gone downhill. The last few times the standard pepperoni pizza "deep dish" looks like this....barely any deeper than a pizza from the 5 dollar place! The corner piece I didn't take a photo of had so little edge to it, it was like a crust less pizza and you could barely pick it up. Remember when it was actually deep dish, the crust was like an inch or inch and a half ALL the way around? I have great food memory and taking your first bite and having it be like thin crust is SOOO disappointing. What has happened to Buddy's lately!!?? The prices have gone up and the quality has sunk. The only saving grace was the salad hasn't been screwed up yet, but the breadsticks are kind of a joke as well. I won't even post a picture of that since it would reflect poorly on my self image that I even attempted to eat it. They're like rectangular undercooked oily things. Do yourself a favor - find the other Detroit pizza legends out there and go elsewhere. One star may sound harsh, but when the key thing, the pizza, is so rough and you look at what the BILL was for the family gathering...seriously...look at what you paid... one star is just about right.

I feel like a jerk. I eat here at LEAST once a week, and I have neglected to yelp about it via the Internet... but considering god knows I yelp about this place on a daily basis, maybe they'll forgive me. Voted one of Detroit's best Pizza places, this Buddy's is set up more as a carry-out vessel than a "sit-down family gathering" joint. I believe ALL their pizza is square (please, correct me if I am wrong), and their antipasto salad- although consists of ham, salami, cheese with oil and vinegar- is something I crave on a daily basis. For all you high schoolers trolling the streets during your lunch hour- this is a good place to grub considering it's close-by and cheap (they have daily lunch specials).

We decided to hit this location instead of the one we initially wanted to (Detroit) because it was closer to home and it fit our daily schedule better. Unfortunately, my experience started out on the negative side when hubby texted me to say they didn't have fries so he got breadsticks instead. Yes, I knew this location was carry-out only, but I still thought they'd have the seasoned fries. So, right off the bat--before even seeing or tasting the food--I mentally reduced their rating by one star for the missing fries (along with no mention of a reduced menu on the website). So my initial pissiness aside, how was the pizza, you're wondering? The breadsticks? The homemade ranch dressing (which they did have, and we got as our breadstick dipping sauce)? The pizza was good--definitely tasty and a notch above the typical Jet's or Dolly's we usually get--but it wasn't nearly the "end all and be all" of pizza like we were led to believe from the advertising, acclaim, and hoopla. The breadsticks were, in a word, awful. Yes, they had to survive the 20-minute drive home...but I would hope a breadstick wouldn't be hard and almost-too-tough to chew by the time we got to the last few pieces. The first pieces were edible and even slightly tasty with a smidge of butter and parmesan (especially when dipped in the LUSCIOUS Ranch dressing) but there is no way I would pay money for those again. And the Ranch, if you couldn't already tell, was yummilicious. YUMMILICIOUS!! I am a sucker for a good Ranch dressing, and this was top notch. But it wasn't enough to overcome the decent pizza and indecent breadsticks. So, I'd say this place is A-OK at three stars. We'd probably be likely to go back if it was closer...or even try another eat-in location...but there are just too many other restaurants we want to try.

Since being diagnosed with celiac disease, it's been so hard to find a good gluten free pizza that well taste good, but also didn't get me sick from cross contamination. The hardest thing for restaurants to understand is cross contamination. They don't want to have a designated cooking area for gf menu items, which in my opinion then what's the point of having GF on your menu at all. However, Buddy's does such a great job keeping their GF safe from cross contamination and it's so so good! They cook it in foil to protect it and change their gloves when prepping these pizzas. I love coming here and every time it has been the best pizza! I highly recommend celiacs coming here!!

I've been there several times with my son and always had a good experience. However, today I walked in and it was like nobody saw me and I stood there at the entrance and I stood there. Two gentlemen came in behind me and the girl saw them and she seated them and then she saw me and she said 'are you here to eat' I said, "of course I'll take the seat by the window facing Maple" and she said "OK go ahead and I'll bring you a menu"! She never did. Eventually, the Server who was working that table. She saw me and she was training another person today and she says I'll be right with you! Well, a minute turned into another minute and another minute and several other people came in and then she came to me and said "what are you having?" I said "I don't know. I don't have a menu!" "Oh" she said "She didn't give you a menu!" I said, No, She didn't give me anything"! So the Server and her trainee went and got me a menu and a glass of water, silverware and napkin! After waiting and waiting for my server and her trainee to return and more people to be seated, my server returned and took my order! Lobster bisque and halibut with green beans no potatoes! Then, for more waiting! And I waited and waited and waiting! They brought my lobster bisque! I tell you! They just do not know how to make a lobster bisque in Birmingham thus far! Not up to par. It was orange and not a bit of lobster in it! Nor the smell of lobster was nowhere near it! I don't know what these restaurants think lobster bisque is. Did not even return to remove my bowl or replenish my water! Never saw them again! Then, I waited another long time until they brought out my main course which was pathetic and the sauce with it was so salty that I couldn't even use it so I did sprinkle some lemon on the fish and try to eat it. The best thing about the meal was the green beans! I ate part of the fish, but it was more or less tasteless! Not one time did my server come to check on me to see if everything was OK and as she was bringing me my check, she poured me some more water, that was really good. The only time she checked on me! The water. Did I tip her? Hummm NO! Oh no oh no! I'm a very good tipper for good service! What could improve? Everything!

There were multiple open tables when we arrived, so that estimate seemed reasonable. Instead, we waited until nearly 9:00 p.m. During that time, we went up to the hostess stand several times to ask for an update, and every single time we were told that we were "next." Yet we continued to watch numerous other parties get seated ahead of us. As the only white group waiting, it left us feeling like we were being treated differently. I can't say for certain why we were repeatedly passed over, but the experience made us feel unwelcome, especially after watching so many other groups be seated while we were continually told we were next. This is particularly frustrating because this isn't the first time I've felt this way at Market North End. I've continued to come back because the food is genuinely very good, but great food isn't enough to make up for feeling ignored and disrespected as a customer. This is consistent with all of the rumors we have heard about this restaurant being unfair to certain races. No one should have to wait an hour and a half while being repeatedly assured they're next, only to watch other parties be seated instead. I hope management takes a serious look at how the waitlist is managed and ensures that every guest is treated fairly and consistently.
