While on business in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan I purchased several pizzas for our work crew who all locals. They all kept telling me that Papalis had the best deep dish pizza in Michigan, and that you could only eat two slices because they were so filling. I purchased four large deep dish pizzas for 8 hungry men for lunch (I was going to purchase 6 but listened to them and only purchased 4.) I hate to admit it, but my crew was correct! This pizza was delicious, perfectly cooked. The dough & sauce was delicious, the toppings (Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, pepperoni & ground beef) were perfect, and yes I could only eat two slices . A bit too much red onion, but cut large enough to ignore. But we came for the pizza! This is such a rare treat our hopes high. Not a disappointment!! We love this style deep dish. Came in Jan 30 at 3. We were ordering from the Pizza Papalis side but from the minute we walked in the door, even the Rio Wraps woman was pleasant and greeted us. The front end was very hospitable. Smiling, Kind and asked all the right questions to get our order right. I don't know why this place isn't busier .. because when I took the first bite of wings, my socks were blown off LOL! Maybe the hardest thing about moving back to Detroit from Chi was missing the pizza (and the Beefs). Sure, Buddys (and now the new Comos) is good, but Chi is the epicenter of high-end Pizza. This place is a godsend. It's 90%+ of a Giordanos (the clear style comparison). It's all of them, but each one individually. Pizza Papalis' deep dishes started in greektown in the original location. They would make a deep dish that you would never forget and driver across the state to have. I was hoping this place would deliver the same flavor, texture, and pizza as before. Well, it's close but not 100% there. The greektown deep dish pizza would have received at least four stars, this one three. Starting with the crust, it's wonderfully think, greasy on the bottom, and think on the side and bottom. The sauce hits its mark by having a delicious tomato base and strong with oregano. The cheese is good, elastic when it's hot. The website states they offer low fat cheese by saying "Lite Cheese". However, when ordering, don't say with Lite Cheese, because they'll put less cheese on it. Make sure you say, low fat cheese. The toppings, having only ordered a few, were very weak. The one that really didn't meet expectations was the garlic. I imagined full roasted garlic cloves and it turned out to be garlic powder. You can imagine my shock and disappointment. Long story short: 1st time eating here, we ordered a GF pizza (I do not have have Celiac's disease or anything but I do have a sensitivity where I swell really bad but I am usually fine w GF pizza). Came home, ate the pizza (was very good). Over the week I notice I was swelling a lot, my skin was breaking out in painful cysts like I would if I had eaten a lot of gluten (I was also having other health problems at the time including a medication change, so I figured that was why). Fast forward the next week. My husband and I wanted pizza again so we come here. We get the same thing in a small GF like the last time, but this pizza looked totally different- the crust was thinner and and pizza was only a bit bigger than the size of my hand (and I have tiny hands) which was much smaller than the first pizza we ordered. Come to find out they messed up our first order and did not give us a GF pizza. A MASSIVE mistake!! They only offered us $5 off of our $25 tiny pizza which we could not even share and my husband had to get food from somewhere else. Needless to say. Never coming back. read more

I remember my coworkers getting into fights over the last piece when we brought it in for lunch! This location disappointed, however. It's no secret that a Papalis pizza isn't cheap, but for the price we found ourselves hunting for the toppings we'd ordered because we weren't quite sure there was anything in there other than crust, sauce, and cheese. The dough was heavy (not in a good deep-dish way) and almost undercooked. The Greek side-salad was a joke and the dressing was strangely sweet.
