The customer service was terrible. The paint department employee who assisted me was extremely rude from the moment I arrived. He seemed annoyed simply because I had purchased my previous gallon of paint at another ACE store, even though I needed to buy this one here because it's the closest location to my home. I even brought the leftover paint can to show him the exact color, and he looked at me with an unpleasant attitude and zero willingness to help. I asked to return it and store manager first accused me of opening it and using it and then she proceeded to say it's the store policy and she wouldn't make an exception. 0 Stars- Truly, I've only seen this sort of lopsided, deceitful, and unfair dealing that I experienced today- while traveling in the third world. It's shameful. I had the misfortune of needing a flathead screwdriver this morning- so I figured let me stop my the neighborhood Ace. Which apparently is not in fact Ace Hardware- but "Budget Ace Hardware"- quite the concoction, but the store nevertheless displays the Ace logo on its exterior. I found the screwdriver I needed but conveniently there was no price on it. The lady behind the counter- who seemed nice enough- asked her manager to price it. She came back with a $15 price tag- which I paid for because frankly, I believe the last time I bought a screwdriver was in college some 15 years ago or thereabouts. I'm not active in that market. However on the road back home, I distinctly felt I might have been 'screwed' in paying $15 dollars for a screwdriver- no pun intended. So I stopped by Home Depot and bought the same exact screwdriver, where the price was clearly displayed on the rack, for $1.99. So in other words- "Budget Ace.. Hardware"- managed to upsell the same screwdriver by $13. Listen, I work in finance: such a massive price discrepancy tells me I should just quit my job and buy screwdrivers all day at Home Depot for $1.99, drive them over to "Budget Ace Hardware", screw people out of an additional $13 and split the difference with these knaves. Really- $13 on a screwdriver is the kind of spread you can drive a bus though; to borrow some industry parlance. BUT THAT IS NOT ALL.. when I decided I should get 'unscrewed' by returning the $15 screwdriver, with the receipt, - I noticed a "final sale" stamp on my receipt. I called Ace Hardware (corporate) and they explained to me that returns where allowed, with a receipt, within 90 days and if the merch was undamaged. When I went back to the store armed with that information- the Budget Ace Hardware manager informed me that the store policy was different. No tools could be returned and all sales are final. So in other words- they carry the Ace hardware logo but they take a dump on the Ace hardware corporate returns policy. Unbelievable. Came in on an afternoon to make a copy of a very particular key. This key is very unique and I had to buy it online to then take it to a hardware store to make a duplicate. I was worried about it. If the person at the hardware store was not able to make a duplicate that works, I would have to buy another key to try again. This key costs more than $30. When I got there, I was immediately greeted by the lady at the cash register. Everyone was very polite and they all acknowledged my presence. The gentleman that usually makes the keys asked me to speak to the manager because he didn't feel comfortable making this particular key. I thanked him for his honesty. I explained my situation to the manager and he didn't hesitate to take the job. He explained the store policy but he also told me he felt confident that he could do it. He was very professional and respectful. He made my key very quickly for $4. I immediately went home to try the key and it worked. Yes! The worst possible Hardware store in the city! To say that employees are not knowledgeable what so ever and saying that they are RUDE is an understatement and they are beyond that. While I was in in the store I saw that alomost everyone was seated and it almost feelt like they are spending time discussing how their day went instead of organizing their stock and assisting clients. A kind messege to the corrporate office if you guys have cameras you can check my claims just check different times of the day you will see how their day goes (Probably with 20% productivity I believe that they work on a bare minimum perfomance ). The problem that I faced was of matter of just a simple question that the employees felt unbothered to answer. It is not just only one employee that is this way is most of them . The fact that this store still functional is a short of miracle , I was able to point out the tool that I wanted to purchase and the employee was like "Oh yeah we had it" I just stayed I guess so. As i was walking to the register I decided not to reward this kind of behaviour and ended up not purchasing this item instead I drove to Home Depot that is 14miles away from this location , so there is that. I don't know... I'm a little surprised to say this, but I'm impressed with this ACE. Just disregard the ugly building, the petty parking lot, and the word "Budget" (I know I'm asking for a lot). Maybe it's because I've been to two other ACE and they were a disaster - especially the horrible mess that is on Flagler near downtown. Should I had known that this was (1) more organized and (2) even closer to me, then I would have gone here more often. They have a good assortment of paints. They can copy keys. Everything is nicely organized and stacked. Good customer service. Good selections. Decent prices (except for the empty spray bottles - they should be a $1, but I'm willing to overlook that)! They have garden tools & sprays. Oh, and you can really ditch driving to Home Depot - I mean like completely. There's even a lumber shop here! So you can get wood and stuff without having to drive farther into Miami for that. Because of all that, plus convenience, I have to give this particular ACE a good score. I've come here in the past when decorating my previous condo and was able to stay in the downtown area without having to travel so far for some necessary home reno items. If you live in downtown and need a key made or a small gallon of paint, these folks will assist you. It's a smaller store with less variety but still functional and efficient. They carry that chalkboard paint which I used in my kitchen to have my drawings on the wall. Once when my air conditioner stopped working, I quickly ran over here and bought a fan so I would be able to sleep comfortably until it was repaired in the morning. Sometimes, having to go further away for a Home Depot doesn't make sense if you need small and simple items which aren't found elsewhere in the downtown. Those of you that know and follow me I tend to have really good reviews. But now I get why Ace Hardware is pretty much on the lower end of all the home-improvement stores. I have only been to this ace hardware store twice and both times the women in the register are always with the worst customer service any business can possibly have. This place takes you on a time warp back to the days before large chain megastores existed and a person used to shop at locally owned business. Having stressed for weeks over what colors I should use for accent walls, I looked up the nearest Benjamin Moore stores on the BM website and found Budget Ace Hardware. Budget is located on 16th and NE 2nd Ave -- a hop, skip, and a jump away from downtown and the Adrienne Arscht Center. Upon walking in, I was immediately greeted by 3 employees willing to help me. I announced I was there to look at paint colors and one escorted me to the paint section. For 20 minutes, this person endured my hemming and hawing and inane discussion about a zebra rug. He helped me calculate how much paint was needed and the different finishes available. Weeks of agony over colors ended with my solid and firm conclusion that jalapeno pepper was the way to go. There is no way I would have been able to get this kind of personalized, patient and uninterrupted service at Home Depot . I know there's no way I would have been in and out of Home Depot in a half hour! Today I went to ace to find it was the place I needed but was discouraged to find that they have a $10 dollar minimum for credit cards. Which I thought was ilegal but since sept 2010 its officially not unless speciafically stated by their merchant: (3) LIMITATION ON RESTRICTIONS ON SETTING TRANSACTION MINIMUMS OR MAXIMUMS. (A) IN GENERAL.--A payment card network shall not, directly or through any agent, processor, or licensed member of the network, by contract, requirement, condition, penalty, or otherwise, inhibit the ability (i) of any person to set a minimum dollar value for the acceptance by that person of credit cards, to the extent that (I) such minimum dollar value does not differentiate between issuers or between payment card networks; and (II) such minimum dollar value does not exceed $10.00 Seeing that there were no soda machines to increase my purchase I proceeded to purchase some screwdrivers on the counter. Just dropped in to have some keys made. I arrived around 10 a.m. on a weekday, and the line at the main register was SUPER long. But after waiting patiently for a few minutes under the sign at Register 3, that read "KEYS," an older gentleman kindly asked how he could help me, and in 10 minutes or so, I was on my way with 5 shiny new keys in my pocket. The service was $3.50 per key, plus tax, and it was super professional and no-hassle. For example, the key-maker didn't try to pressure me into buying novelty keys and the woman working the pay register didn't try to get me to buy any needless accessories. Plus, super-bonus, the keys actually WORK! I'll definitely return to Budget/Ace to have keys made in the future, and I highly recommend it to you, too. Over the past few days I have bought so much supplies to renovate my apartment from this store. When I got home I found that a couple of items worth less then $2 are broken. I went back to the store to exchange them, the guys refused the items. Also I had a paint sealer that i bought there and I wanted to exchange. When I told the guys that this store is the worst ace hardware franchise he got pissed and said he wouldn't exchange the sealer either. I'm giving this place the a-ok so my prep friends down for the fair know its the spot to go for most anything you'll need if you're in Wynwood. No step-ups for Euro electronics, though. Take the bad reviews on here with a grain of salt, they mostly seem like amateurs, even if I see where they're coming from in some cases.
