I was a bit nervous about renting from Budget after reading some mixed reviews, but it was the cheapest and closest option, so I decided to give it a shot. So glad I did--it was a smooth experience from start to finish! I arrived right when they opened at 8am on a time crunch to make it to a 9:30am job interview- I was a little nervous about timing since I'd heard stories of other customers needing to head to the airport, but nope the location was right at Government Center! Dianne was a breeze to work with--she explained everything clearly, from paying for a toll pass (I brought my own E-Zpass, phew!) to making sure I filled up the gas tank and brought back the receipt, or else I'd face an extra charge. Bill in the garage was friendly and efficient when I picked up and dropped off the car/keys. When I returned the car, Dianne asked how my job interview went and was genuinely sweet and supportive. It's those little things that make a difference! All in all, my Budget/Avis rental for 4-5 hours was seamless, hassle-free, and dare I say pleasant hahaha! Horrible service. I approached them in person few weeks ago, showed all my documents and asked if I can rent a car with physical debit card. The lady assured me that I can. I asked her to do the booking, but she said it does not work like that, and I should just come in the morning and pick up my car. I asked her three times, before booking my hotel and other things in Maine. And than I approach and her colleague, who says that he is "not going to contact anyone, you just can't do that with a debit card". Do not trust this company and their employees. If you love to be screwed, you should definitely use Budget. However, if you enjoy driving well kept cars and being respected I urge you to use literally any other rental car company. Budget rented me a car with a flat tire (9 psi) and then charged me $166 for the tire needing to be filled before I had even driven a mile away from the rental location. When I attempted to find a solution where I was not held responsible for their incompetency I was denied despite being assured multiple times on the phone that I would not be responsible. I urge you to never use Budget. There are many other smaller and less expensive companies to use if you are on a budget and in need of an inexpensive rental car. Don't worry, this Avis Rental Car location is also a sub outlet for Budget Rental Cars. The big sign on the building says Avis, but inside there is a small banner that says "Welcome Budget Customers." According to the Representative, Avis and Budget are affliated with each other. Avis handles the commercial rental car accounts while Budget handles the retail customer rentals. I chose this location to rent a car, because I noticed it was far more inexpensive than picking up a rental car at the airport. From Chinatown, it's like a 15-minute walk. From the T at the Park Street and State Street subway stations, it's only a 5-minute walk. The walk is not so bad considering there are several historical landmarks on the way there. I suggest bringing a camera to take photos. This location is open from 7:00am - 7:00pm Monday through Friday. On Saturday, it's open from 8:00am - 4:00pm. The best news is that they are open on Sunday from 8:00am - 3:00pm. Being open on a Sunday is pretty awesome considering these smaller rental car places are usually closed. It's a breeze to check-in, get the keys, get the car, and leave. They give you one paid parking ticket and another one with the validation. Make sure you get these before leaving the check-in counter. read more

Worst car rental I have ever had. I will gladly pay more $ to use any other company from here on out. The door that SHOULD open so you can get to the gas cap would not open. I arrived early to return the car figuring the people who accept the returns would have encountered this problem before and be able to pop it open so that I could go and fill up the car. No such luck. Instead, I paid $50 for 3/4 of a tank of gas at the inflated Budget gas rate even though I explained to the lady at the counter that I could not open the gas cap (and the guy who checked me in who happened to come up to the counter confirmed this). Mind you, I offered to pay for the gas - however, I stupidly assumed given that it was their fault since their car malfunctioned, they would give me a break on the cost. Down the street it would have cost me a little of $3 a gallon, so roughly $30, not $5 a gallon. I also confirmed that since I used my own personal transponder for tolls I would not be charged (I never opened the box containing their transponder). Low and behold, "SURPRISE!" $22 charge on my debit car for you guess it, tolls. The lady at the counter said IF I was charged it was a simple matter of reaching out to Budget. Yes, you guessed it, it's NOT a simple matter AT ALL. I called and was told where I needed to send an email. If the information had been easy to find on the website, I wouldn't have called - mind you, I WORK IN IT and know my way around a website. I follow the instructions, send a very clear email stating what occurred and honestly, expected a "we're so sorry, here is your refund in 5-7 business days" email since I had included a copy of the tolls I PAID. A day later I receive what is obviously a canned response informing me that I have to reach out to the Massachusetts toll authority to straighten this matter out and it also states that I MAY be SOL on this whole thing. Honestly, I don't care about the $22 in toll charges, heck, I already paid more than that in gas, what I do care about is the principal that a car rental company lacks customer service. I will never ever give Budget one red cent even if there is a zombie apocalypse and they are the only means of getting out of town! I waited in line three hours to pick up a reserved Budget car at Logan Int'l on the afternoon of Saturday, 7/22/17. At first I thought they'd run out of cars: then I thought the computer was down; it was all guesswork on my part as there was zero communication or explanation from counter staff or management. Neither was correct - they were just overwhelmed and didn't give a damn. Budget knew how many reservations they had and did nothing to accommodate the many travelers they knew would be arriving. Their disdain for their customers was astonishing. In 35 years of renting cars for business and pleasure I've never seen anything like it, nor had the poor saps standing in that line with me. They somehow lost the car we returned when we returned it after hours, decided to charge us $800 for this (8x the car rental place) then when we opened a case to dispute this charge with them they charged an additional $300 because they still couldn't find the car. STAY AWAY, Deceptive business practice! This is a terrible rental agency. I made my reservations initially through Priceline. When I went to pick up my car the agent - Alonso tried to charge me for the rental until I told him it was already paid for. Then, he went on to tell me I HAD to buy insurance from Budget. I told him three or four times that I did not want ANY insurance, that my own insurance covered this and that it was also covered by my credit card. I also told him I had the declarations page to prove I had insurance. (I once was told I needed to provide this.) After telling him, he continued to say Budget had insurance and that he didnt know if mine covered my rental. He then put down that I agreed to purchase their insurance and I found a charge on my credit card for insurance that I explicitly refused at least three times. I have been charged over $250 for this! This is DISHONEST and DECEPTIVE business practice by Budget and complete dishonesty from their agent - in Boston. So far I have not received any remedy from Budget. I will never use them again. We recently had a horrible terrible experience with Budget in the Boston airport. There was a line with 50 people in front of us. It moved so slowly. There were five counters open and at each counter the transaction was completely inefficient and long. It seemed like every clerk was confused, was consulting the computer, on the phone, etc. We waited one full hour and at the end the clerk didn't apologize or give us any indication that this wasn't normal. It was a complete time suck and the customer experience was horrible. See the attached photo - for the joke of a slogan and see the line of people. If you had routine lines of one hour would you advertise it with a sign at the start of the long line that says "it all starts here". We were tempted to get a marker and write "and it never ends." My husband had a very similar experience two days earlier in Denver. It seems that Budget just intends to treat its customers that way. I know that I will never use Budget again. I had to convince a family member to drive 1 hour up to Boston, allow me to stay with them that night, and then drive me 1 hour back to Budget Government Center location the next morning! One of the worst customer service experiences I've had in recent memory... Made a reservation on the phone with Budget, and had an email confirmation to match. We specifically inquired on the phone about the additional driver fee being waived (which is standard with certain memberships like AARP and Costco) and were assured this was the case for our reservation. Not only did the representatives at the counter refuse to honor this detail of the reservation, they gave us incorrect information about the policies, which we later verified with the corporate office. And somehow we ended up having to pay $50 more than the reservation claimed, and got a type of car we didn't reserve or want. I don't mind $50 one way or another for a rental in general, but it was the complete lack of customer service and demeaning attitude that really got me here. I will never, ever be back to this location, which is a shame since it's the most convenient one for me. I'd rather go out of my way to the airport than deal with anyone here again. read more

No attempt by them to separate people who had reservations from those who didn't, so process for everyone was taking much longer. The people behind the counter did not care. To me, this was absolute abuse of customers. We walked down to Hertz and were able to rent a similar vehicle for $30 more for the week. If I were able to give a negative review I would. I rented a car. It had numerous dents, scratches, and little gas. I had the guy document every scratch, dent, etc on the car. After I left the lot I noticed the car was on about empty. I called to let them know and they were very rude. Thankfully, I kept all of the paper work on the condition of the car because they sent me a bill for all of the dents,scratches on the car for nearly $1000.00. In 2016 they added Budget Rental Car to the current Avis location (which just means a crappy "Welcome Budget customers" sign inside the Avis building, where you can't even see it from outside). I had vowed to never use this Avis location again because I'd never waited in line less than 30 minutes at this location.
