Time defying line (over an hour)
Tait L.

Live up to promises. Have customer service. Care. Try those 3 things and I'll consider changing my review. Budget car rental lied to me. And lost me as a customer today. I took the time this morning to create an account with Budget and sign up for Fast Break so I could go straight to my car. After taking the shuttle to the car lot I wandered around in freezing rain and couldn't find where to go. I went back to the counter area and found someone that would listen to me that told me that Fast Break was "unavailable" today and I'd have to get in line. A line a lot longer than when I arrived but zero communication from Budget ... Yeah. Fun. 2 counter attendants and like 20 people in line. No way I get to my destination on time. They have QR codes posted everywhere to scan to shorten time then don't bother to keep up their end of the bargain yet if you complain, it's not fixed and no one cares so what is happening in America these days? Bad service, long lines, rude people... Goodness! I tried and still lost :( Budget was really really bad today on my first (and last) experience with them Also, the shuttle from DTW? Driver didn't even try standing up to help people with luggage even when a passenger struggled to get a heavy bag up the steep steps. Just sat there staring. And still had a Tip Jar 2 feet away. Yikes!

All the cars just sitting here!

We had a car reservation for our trip home from the DR, had confirmation # and the make and model of the rental car. When our flight landed we shuttled over to Budget. Only to be told ohhh sorry we don't have a car for you! Unless you are bringing it back to Detroit today, or renting it for 7 days! I have pictures of the 1000's of cars in the parking lot but yet they refuse to give us one! Get it together Budget, your website lets you book cars you don't have?!?

Supposedly full tank of gas. Not even 3/4.

I arrived just before midnight to pick up my rental car. When I walked in, there were two people working. The line was nearly to the door and the agents were processing everybody very slowly. At one point in the midst of the break, one of the people working took a break and didn't come back for quite some time. Then when he returned, the other person left. Of course, workers need breaks too. But it seems like the company was logistically unprepared to handle the flow of customers. It took me nearly an hour and a half to get to the agent. When I had finished all the paperwork I was told I had been "upgraded" from the Toyota Camry I reserved to a Kia Sportage. I didn't feel like it was an upgrade. Downgrade likely, lateral at best, but absolutely undesired. Considering the fact that it was about 1:30 AM and I was beyond tired, I didn't feel like raising a fuss. I probably should have. After leaving the lot, I noticed that the gas tank was less than three quarters full, and my contractual responsibility was supposed to be to bring back a full tank - because I was supposed to receive a full tank. I brought it back with the same amount of gas as I received. If I get billed for that I will fight it for sure. The car itself had several issues while I was driving where it stopped accelerating while I was on the highway. I had to pull over and restart it in order to drive properly. It was very unsafe. The check engine light also came on. Based on these factors alone, I think it is highly unlikely that I will choose Budget (perhaps just this location, but I'm generally soured) over another company if I have the option to do so.

Multiply each person by ten minutes and that's your wait time

The absolute worst! If you think the DMV is bad then you've never been to the Detroit budget airport location. I waited over two hours... The employees show zero enthusiasm while the line is out the door. They shuffle their feet and move slow. It's really unbelievable. Each customer takes at least ten minutes and I'm not sure why.

Horrible - Fastbreak member just horrible Our name on board arrived at 11:45 pm and zero cars!!!! NO Fastbreak at all absolutely crazy. Still waiting at 1:23am. 3 people working. We received confirmation when we landed that car was ready... this is unacceptable

As a Fastbreak member, I generally reserve a Budget, especially if they are giving me a better rental price. This review is for a recent rental from here. Many years have passed in between rentals. The shuttle from the airport over to the location was easy to find and a fairly short ride. Upon arrival, there was a substantial line of customers. The Fastbreak member counter was not open, resulting in having approximately a 50 min wait in line to obtain my prepaid rental. There were only 2 people working the counter. They were moving at a reasonable pace, about 5-10 min per customer. It seemed like they were taking care to address each of the customers' needs, questions, etc. Once I arrived at the counter, I received good customer service, and all of my questions were answered. For return, I chose to use the curbside drop-off service for a small additional fee. I had prepaid this at reservation. It made drop off a breeze. Once I pulled in and let them know that I had drop-off service, someone came out to drive me over to the airline terminal. By the time I reached my gate, I had received my electronic receipt. Save for the unanticipated long wait at pickup, it was a good experience overall. Even though there is a free shuttle back to the airport, I think I'll continue using the dropoff service to save time.

Budget car rental just so happened to be the rental place listed on my reservation I put in through Expedia travel agency. After flying into Evans terminal - Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), I made my way to the shuttle area where the shuttle bus for Budget awaited as I came down the escalator floor. The shuttles in the area provide transportation to either McNamara terminal, On/Off-Airport Parking Shuttles, Car Rental, and Hotel. I had the pleasure of having a quality conversation with the driver of the shuttle bus, being that I was the only rider en-route to the site from Evans terminal. Our conversation evolved around traveling out of the country via cruise, and sites within Detroit Michigan like the beloved Motown Historical Museum aka 'Hitsville U.S.A'. Once I arrived at the car rental site, picking up my vehicle was a lengthy wait in line because there were a lot of customers ahead. However, once it was my turn at the counter, it was just a verification of my information by the clerk, informing me about the service options like coverage, fuel and the pre-vehicle inspection which I conducted thoroughly myself before driving off of the lot. The vehicle I ended up receiving was a Chevrolet Malibu which I must say was amazing! While driving the roads of Detroit, I absolutely enjoyed its acceleration and the way it maneuvered. And it came with keyless ignition which has been slowly growing on me being that I have never owned a vehicle with that feature. Vehicle return was simple because I was required to drive my vehicle in an area where it was checked in. Once checked in, I was well on my way to catch the shuttle bus back to Evans terminal. There were two shuttle bus pick up spots which were for terminals Evans or McNamara. I advise you to clearly look at the signage because the particular airline you are flying with is listed on either sign. Even with the lengthy wait in line, I would still be open to utilizing Budget car rental again. If you can tolerate the possibility of that, then I do recommend it! ~Blessings~ Thomas G

How does a company charge you more money for them not fulfilling their agreement and then give you a disgusting smelling car? This was a major failure and will change the way I have car rentals booked for myself and my employees going forward.

I had to go through the Better Business Bureau...... My…read morecomplaint was that the Avis attendant at the rental site is effectively not supported by their employer. They had to scrounge up a vehicle due to low inventory (not the location's fault) but told me I was entitled to a refund as a result. That's where the problem started. I'm now going through my credit card to argue the issue. Below is my rejection of what the Avis "corporate office" had to offer - they were giving me a "free rental day"..... this is NOT a refund..... They also tried to tell me that what I was given was "higher rental" rated vehicle - essentially going against what their own employee told me..... So I informed them I'm not satisfied for the following reasons..... 1) Failure to rectify the issue to the customer's satisfaction and to what would be considered as fair business practices. If an Avis employee informs the customer they are entitled to a refund based on what they see in their system at the counter and since they are the ones that ISSUE THE VEHICLE, then it stands within good business discipline that a refund should be awarded to the customer in the interest of providing quality service. If the employee should not have conducted themselves like that then this is an internal business issue within Avis that should be handled through adequately training their employees vice ping-pong their customers around between a remote field office and corporate Avis. Clearly this depicts that Avis is NOT WILLING to stand behind it's own employees who are not being given full autonomy if the "corporate office" is willing to rollover on their own employees as well as their customers. 2) Lack of transparency of vehicles "rates" and the "rating system". The argument below supposes that I'm to know how or why a Dodge caravan (as an example) is a "standard" van and a Chrysler Pacifica is a "luxury" van.... and then perhaps a Honda Odyssey is a "premium" van. In my book - they are ALL mini-vans plain and simple. Telling me after-the-fact that the vehicle I had is some "higher" level rated rental is meaningless and obtuse. This reduces to a simple counter argument whereby the customer is powerless to respond simply because they are not involved and provided no guidance on how vehicles are rated. This further supports the FACT that the customer is 100% reliant on what the clerk at the counter informs them of and given that the "corporate office" seemingly does not support their own field employees Avis corporate can then arbitrability deny or support what their satellites employees do at their whim or as a situation benefits the larger Avis business. Furthermore, this paints the issue in a different light by twisting the argument into "we gave you a better vehicle" vice honor what their own employee told the customer. I'm not even bringing up the issue of "points" - clearly this process is much too hard to rectify. I will inform Avis here though that when I bring up a "points" issue with most hotels, airlines, and similar they typically award the points after verifying the business transaction vice tell their customers they need to sign up and then opt-in and join some special club.... even if that were true they explain the what/why and then award the points . What I find most distressing is that I have to go through such great lengths here to explain this and essentially get what an Avis employee tells me I'm entitled to. In a court of law the employee would be considered a de facto corporate representative of Avis - it would behoove the business to support their own accordingly. The one day rental is "nice" but this assumes that I will be doing any business with Avis in the future.... should I be? Would you reading this "LIKE" to go through this? Would you expect your family members to have this experience? The basic issue remains. The Avis attendant said "refund" - Avis refuses. I assume I have to take this up with my credit card and online at various review sites. Seemingly this is what Avis desires. There's a book that could help here - it's called "Raving Fans" - it's the kind of customers I have, because I treat them better than they expect. It's a great read - and its precepts, if followed, could produce similar customers for Avis if implemented.

The representative that assisted me on this day was Elizabeth. She was pleasant, professional, and moved quick when retrieving the vehicle I reserved. She took her time and explained the process to me (although I wasn't new to this) and did so without attitude, which is a big plus in my book. Unfortunately we did not have a good experience this visit on 12/20/25 at this Detroit Airport…read morelocation. My Husband reserved a Premium SUV almost a month in advance of our arrival date. We took the airport shuttle here and the line was super long. My Husband checked in, he has one of those great customer accounts since he frequently rents from Enterprise. Well, we saw several families waiting for their vehicles for over 30 mins. A majority of the time, an employee would come to talk to the people waiting on cars to ask if they would rather rent another class/type of vehicle. This was a RED FLAG and it happened about 4 times in 45 minutes. At an hour of waiting, a male employee comes over and asks if we would consider a Dodge Durango (which is not the suv class that we reserved). We let him know that it would not work for us, due to our party size and luggage amount. We have 3 people at and over 6 foot and 1 who is 5ft 8 inches, plus 8 pieces of luggage, backpacks, purses, etc., which is why we reserved a premium SUV. Meanwhile, 2 smaller (shorter and less people) got their premium suvs and drove off.... Another employee named Owen asked again (this is at 1hr 15mins) if we would take a Dodge Durango. Again, we declined and thanked him for offering. We then had to explain our party size and luggage amount. He said that they are checking the whole fleet including National and Alamo lots... Owen returns and asks my Husband to have a look at Jeep Wagoneer. My Husband said that it was not the class that we reserved, but it will work. Owen took a bit off of the price for the hassle and smaller vehicle class. Overall, they did not have the vehicle class that we reserved and paid for, it was snowing, it was cold, it was very bad. We waited a total of 1 hour and 45 mins to get a vehicle; even though we reserved a month in advance. I do not recommend this location during the holidays. When we brought the suv back, we prepaid for fuel and the estimated cost held on the credit card was set. We even brought the suv back with almost a half tank of fuel. The total was $40 over what the original credit card hold was. This place is a joke, scam, and most importantly unreliable.

There were larger SUVs on the lot, but many were either not ready or already reserved. From a customer perspective, it feels like Executive members should have priority access to those vehicles, as that is one of the key benefits of earning and maintaining Executive status, with the perk of walking up and grabbing those cars. This is now the third time I've been told to reserve a specific vehicle in advance. While I understand the need for reservations, I would expect the Executive Aisle to consistently offer a selection of premium vehicles without having to reserve them individually. Otherwise, it diminishes the value of the Executive Elite membership program. While shuttles for all other rental car companies and hotels arrived regularly the Budget shuttle never appeared. I waited approximately 45 minutes. During that time I called the direct phone number for Budget multiple times and received only an outgoing message stating the office was closed. I also contacted Budget's 800 number and was told there should be a phone in the shuttle area to request pickup. There was no such phone. I asked multiple DTW employees all of whom confirmed there was no phone and that waiting was the only option. Two other parties were also waiting for Budget during this time. One of those parties discovered that Avis and Budget share an office so we boarded an Avis shuttle. Given the lack of shuttle service and unanswered calls I believed Budget was closed but the office was in fact open. When I reached the counter I was assisted by a representative named Christian. He attempted to rush me by suggesting I take an electric vehicle, which I had not reserved, despite there being minimal customer volume at that hour. I declined. When I asked about extending the rental by a few hours and requested pricing information his answers were unclear and incomplete. Christian then loudly announced that he was taking a specific car, repeating it so other employees could hear. This behavior was unusual and, in retrospect, appeared deliberate. The vehicle I was given was in unacceptable condition. It had a strong cigarette odor, visible dirt and mud throughout the interior and exterior and extremely dirty windows that impaired visibility that became apparent when daylight broke. Because it was still dark the full extent of the condition was not immediately apparent. I initially I thought it was dew and poor wipers. The vehicle was also not provided with a full tank of gas. I returned to the counter and informed Christian that the car smelled strongly of cigarettes and requested a different vehicle. I was told that all the cars smelled like cigarettes. Another employee offered to spray the vehicle. A third employee applied a deodorizing spray through one door and at my request it was sprayed through the others. The chemical odor was irritating but at the time it seemed preferable to the cigarette smell. When exiting the lot I informed the attendant checking IDs that the fuel tank was not full. I was advised to either return inside to have it corrected or document it with a photo. Given the poor visibility caused by the dirty windows, I chose to take a photo and leave. Approximately 10 minutes later the cigarette odor returned at full strength. I drove with all windows down and wore a mask yet experienced throat irritation, nausea and difficulty breathing. I realized I could not tolerate this condition for a 4 day rental. I contacted Budget's 800 number and was initially told the vehicle must be returned to the original pickup location, despite being over an hour away. After an extended back-and-forth, I was told I could go to any Budget location. I drove 25 minutes to the Sterling Heights location where I was informed they had no vehicles and were turning away customers with reservations. I was told that due to the approaching weekend other locations likely also had no availability and that I would need to call each location individually. I contacted the 800 number again and was told the airport would have the most availability. A representative suggested I take the vehicle to a car wash. This was not a reasonable solution; cigarette odor embedded in fabric is not resolved by a wash, and deodorizing sprays had already caused additional irritation. With no alternative, I drove an hour back to DTW, losing a substantial portion of the day correcting an issue I did not create. Upon arrival, the return line extended out the door. I was assisted by an employee named Janey. Although I requested to speak with a manager, I was told management was in a meeting. Despite this, Janey handled the situation promptly and professionally. During an extremely busy period, she provided a clean vehicle that did not smell like cigarettes, was free of mud and dirt, and had a full tank of gas, basic standards that were not met earlier when there was little to no line. Janey resolved in minutes what multiple employees failed to address. Her professionalism stood in stark contrast to the rest of this experience.

From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was tense and unprofessional. There was an older middle-aged woman, Monique, yelling across the room at customers to get in line. The way she spoke was shockingly loud, aggressive, and completely unwelcoming. It set a negative tone right from the start, and I could sense that other customers were just as uncomfortable as I was. When I finally reached the counter, the interaction was far from what I would expect from a business that prides itself on customer service. Instead of a polite greeting, I was met with a cold, rushed, and impersonal demeanor. It was clear that she had no interest in providing any level of courtesy or professionalism. After I handed over my ID and driver's license, things took a turn for the worse. While processing my payment, Monique yelled at me not to pull my card out of the machine, raising her voice in a manner that was not only rude but completely unnecessary. Her tone was abrasive and demeaning, leaving both me and the other customers around me in shock. People were looking at her, shaking their heads in disbelief at how she was treating a paying customer. At that point, I had to respond and told her not to speak to me like that. I couldn't believe how unprofessional and downright hostile she was acting. This level of disrespect is unacceptable in any setting, but especially when dealing with loyal customers who come to your business expecting a basic level of service and respect. It's clear that Monique's behavior is not only affecting individual customer experiences but also tarnishing the overall reputation of this location. I am urging the management at this location, and corporate, to take immediate action. This situation needs to be addressed seriously. I would strongly recommend reviewing the security footage to witness firsthand how she is treating customers. Her behavior reflects poorly on your brand, and I find it hard to believe that I'm the first person to raise concerns about her conduct. As someone who has rented from your company multiple times, I can honestly say that I have never had an experience like this. I am now reconsidering whether I will return to this location in the future, and I imagine other customers feel the same way after interacting with her. Monique's attitude is driving people away, and I hope you understand the urgency of addressing this issue. It is essential that corporate hold her accountable for her actions, or risk losing the trust and business of many loyal customers. I truly hope this matter is taken seriously and resolved quickly
