This hertz is great if you have status. Presidents circle cars were decent at 6pm on a Friday. Nissan rogues, Nissan kicks, a few jeeps people ran to, Buick suv, Hyundai suvs, etc. most people were getting suvs (including us) but some nice sedans too. We got a rogue and the car play ability was awesome for maps and charging phones. Return was easy, rental was easy, no complaints. Rented from Avis here previously and never again. read more

As a Hertz member, booked my SUV weeks in advance for my business trip. When I landed in Detroit there was a text message from Hertz saying my car was not available and there were only other vehicles available. However, they increased the price of the rental $33 per day for giving me a car I did not reserve and it was entirely their fault. When I got to the rental office there was a line 20 people deep and I could not stand in line to complain in person as I had a meeting to get to. Once I got into the minivan it wreaked of cigarette and Marijuana smoke! I told the lady at the gate as I exited the facility and her response was to say "That's too bad." and handed me a form to fill out when I returned it so I would not get charged! What a joke of an operation! I travel several times a month for business and this is by far the worst example of a company simply disrespecting their customers and not caring at all! How does a company charge you more money for them not fulfilling their agreement and then give you a disgusting smelling car? This was a major failure and will change the way I have car rentals booked for myself and my employees going forward. read more

I would give negative if I can. Probably the worst airport rental car counter experience. Hertz shuttle showed up after enterprise rent car shuttle stopped by 4 times. Got to the center and they took care of about 2 people in 30mins. Everyone standing there is frustrated and probably late to meetings just like myself so I had no choice but to cancel and grabbed an uber. The counter ladies didn't care and didn't show any action of rushing. They took their time and didn't care. THE WORST I've ever experienced so far. I guess I will stick to my usual Enterprise, National and Turo. Those counter ladies and the manager should get fired. DMV these days are quicker and much better service than Hertz. read more

Extremely disappointing experience at Hertz DTW. The moment we arrived at the Hertz building after the DTW shuttle, it was clear we were in for a long wait. There was already a large crowd waiting for vehicles, including families with children. We were repeatedly told there were "no vehicles because people kept turning them in late" and that cars were "being cleaned." Meanwhile, employees behind the counter were casually chatting and laughing, while others outside were standing around on their phones or talking instead of helping customers. Our prepaid reservation was for 9:00 PM on 8/6, but we didn't receive a vehicle until 10:10 PM, and only after I threatened to cancel. Customers were given very little communication or indication that anyone was actually taking ownership of the situation. When our car finally arrived, it wasn't even properly prepared: the floor mats were missing and someone else's trash was under the passenger seat. I also prepaid for toll coverage, but the vehicle wasn't equipped with the toll reader, so I had to pay $47.97 out of pocket. To make matters worse, Hertz employees should be informing customers about the new AI vehicle scanning system, which could result in charges for damage that wasn't caused during the rental, as well as the fact that card processing fees are being passed on to customers. These policies should be clearly disclosed--not discovered after the fact. Hertz should refund the $47.97 in toll fees and provide at least $50 for the delay and inconvenience, including missing dinner because of the late pickup. The only positive experience was our shuttle driver, who was professional, helpful, and genuinely cared about getting everyone and their luggage safely to the airport. After this experience, I will never rent from Hertz again. Delays happen, but the lack of urgency, communication, preparation, and basic customer service was completely unacceptable. read more

rented a car end of december. check in went smoothly and car was good. i should've booked a suv because the next day there was insane snow and the little kia was struggling. funny enough the car i picked was the same car that i rented in orlando in november after my flight was cancelled and drove it up to detroit! went back again last week and rented the same car and yolanda who helped me upgraded me to a suv when i mentioned the snow driving. she was great! wonderful conversations and everything went smoothly. both times i got my deposit back within a hour of returning the car. i've only rented a car 3 times in my life (newly 25!) so i can't compare my experience to other companies but i had a good experience with hertz read more

The Renting from Hertz after the bus left the Detroit airport was very smooth. Our counter representative Janelle was wonderful to work with and clear. I do have a concern though - we had to cut our trip short but due to the Hertz policy that would increase the amount we would pay if we used the car less days was very bad for us - we needed the car only 4 days but originally had reserved it for 6 days and basically was forced to keep the rental longer than we needed it - I don't feel $820 is a fair price for a small car either - we didn't want to get charged more if we took the car back - what should we do? We have liked Hertz in the past and they connected through our airline of choice - Delta - but the price needs attention as its too much and at $137.66 a day we should have only paid roughly $546.67 total - and we should have been told about this at pick up after our flight read more

One of the more efficient car rental experiences for us. Everything was well organized. The woman behind the counter knew what she was doing and didn't try to upsell. Asked the insurance questions and moved on. Their cars are laid out in sections and you choose which one you want. One criticism would be all the bald tires. Nearly every car had worn tires and we were heading to Northern Michigan where there's a ton of snow. No issues with the ride. Unlimited mileage, in the end we filled the tank and parked it near a waiting shuttle. Check in was a snap. Another positive to this place is the big shuttle driver, Melvin. He plays gospel music in the front of the bus, sings along and doesn't apologize. If you don't care for it...it's a couple mile walk from the rental stand to Evans terminal. The absolute worst rental car experience I've ever had. I travel frequently almost every other month and out of any city I've ever been to this Hertz/thrifty rental car is the worst and most poorly managed. The main experience issue is that it took me close to 30 minutes to leave the parking lot. Let me explain. The check encounter is standard. You give them your drivers license and credit card they ask you do you want to pre-pay for the fuel or buy extra insurance which I understand it's very standard. However, upon exiting there was maybe six cars ahead of me and it literally took 30 minutes for us to leave the lot. This hurts location, pressure pressures their exit attendant to try to re-upsell you the same thing that the counter up salt. Meaning the exit attendant once again is asking people do you want to add Insurance? Do you want to pre-pay your fuel. And when that happens and let's say someone says yes Now the exit attendant needs to talk to the front office and it takes maybe another 1015 minutes to re-process this transaction. At no time shitty exit attendant be trying to upsell to earn more commission. That job has already been done and already been agreed on when I was at the counter. This is a terrible policy and for guests who after getting into the car ready to leave should not be waiting 30 more minutes just to exit the lot because I'm being hard pressured and being up Sold. I told the park the exit attendant that I was not interested in any Ups and he gave me severe attitude and a dirty look like I did something wrong. Not the way to do business. read more

I experienced similar issues that other people reported: cars not clean (trash was in front seat of first car I opened), very very dark parking area so no way to inspect for damage, waited an hour to get a car, despite being a Hertz Gold member. It Hertz so bad! We arrived first thing yesterday morning in a snow storm. I had requested a rental with 4 wheel drive the day before and added the insurance. So a 1 day $150 rental. I am a gold plus rewards member and was upgraded to 5 star status this week! -- I reserved on my iPhone app, but didn't realize that Hertz (when it doesn't have a car for the day entered). Will offer you a rental for a future date!! Without telling you it has switched the date. To make matters worse, they offer you a pay now less expensive option, on the date you didn't ask for. They really value their customer facing employees with this sales tactic. So when I arrived at the desk, no car. Okay, I inquired about another all wheel drive vehicle. But was denied, because they only had a certain number of cars for the next day, the bright and sunny day. So, went on my budget app and reserved a 4 wheel drive Ford explorer. Now, I inquired about getting to the budget rental car. I was told I could take the bus back to the terminal and switch busses. Instead, my wife and I walked across the snow covered parking lot, hopped over a jersey barrier and walked across the snow covered parking lot to the Budget office, about 1/4 mile. I had pre booked a car rental from Hertz and when i went to pick it up at 5am the ladies told me they couldn't authenticate my drivers license so they didn't give me the rental. The woman behind the counter assures me everything is correct and that I will receive my deposit (700$) back when I safely drop the car off. Today after dropping my car off, at LaGuardia as stated I received an 800$ charge for not dropping the car off at DTW. I was a long time hertz customer they use to be my go to. I recently had a rental and it was stole out of my possession. Cops recovered the car with all my belonging but Hertz took the car and my belonging. They stole a brand new iPad, air pods, ray bands, my daughter's car seat, clothes and more. They won't tell me where my things are I just keep getting the run around. I'm tracking my devices and they're saying someone from hertz is trying to use them. I've called over and over but nothing. I had to literally drop out of college because I don't have my things for school. Hertz really spit in my face!! Here it is 9/16/25. No one has reached out about my things yet. You would think hertz would be more helpful since I was the one who vehicle was stolen. Still nothing on my belonging and no one will answer my emails or calls. I talked to the cop who recovered the car yesterday and he said again "your things were in that car once hertz got it back", so that tells me hertz are very dishonest/thieves or they simply don't care about the black customers. I've called every day since 8/25/25 and no one has gotten back with me about anything. The one time they did answer the manager did want to talk so she just put the phone down and never came back. This corporation is horrible and very classless. 9/18/25- Here I am again trying to reach to Hertz Detroit, but no answer again. The phone just rings and rings all day. I've been calling for over a week to try and come get my belongings but no one will respond. This company is only showing me that they are in fact trying to steal my belongings. I too wish I could give zero stars. What a complete nightmare! I've rented cars hundreds of times and literally dozens of times at the Detroit airport. Never has it been this crazy. First, there's only one Hertz bus in 20 minutes. All the other rental car buses came and went numerous times. Then when I get is packed solid, and the driver is yelling at people to get their suitcases out of the aisle. Then they told me I could check in early and my car would be waiting for me. Well, it was not. No apology no explanation and I walk out to choose a car and there's plenty of cars to choose from. So not sure why they said they don't have any cars . So that was ridiculous. And now I'm literally waiting in line about 30 cars deep and there's two lines trying to get out of the rental car place. I kid you not. It is insane! Never seen anything like it. Absolutely horribly run facility. Bathrooms are completely broken, with NO WATER , and the door doesn't open and close properly, its not on the hinges correctly and it gets stuck and has to be kicked open and slammed shut. Paper towels are barely attached to the wall. Walls have broken adhesive on them. Also they still have lots of rock salt spread all over the place outside (it's MAY!!) and their metal fixtures outside are totally covered in rust and look terrible. These guys take zero pride in their facility. This is pathetic and doesn't reflect well on the Hertz brand. I give them an F. AWFUL JOB HERTZ. read more

I booked my rental weeks in advance, but when I arrived to pick it up, my card was declined. After calling the bank, I found out that it had been canceled due to suspected fraud, and a new card had been sent out--but I was never notified. While I understand this issue was mine to resolve, the customer service experience that followed was unacceptable. Joseph, the front desk representative, initially claimed he was going to find a manager for assistance, but instead, I saw him outside eating pizza. He returned later, didn't address me, and simply moved on to assist other customers. I then approached another representative named Donna, who was incredibly dismissive. As I tried to explain the situation, she seemed uninterested and started talking to someone else, completely ignoring me. I was with someone who offered to place the reservation under their name, and while I understand policies may not allow that, the complete lack of effort to help us find a solution was disappointing. Even when I first walked in, Donna didn't call for the next customer in line but just sat there chatting. I don't expect reps to always be immediately available, as I know they have other tasks, but basic communication and respect would have made all the difference. I've used Hertz all over the country, but this experience was by far the worst. 1/10, would not recommend. read more

Horrible customer service. We waited over an hour and a half to pick up the rental we reserved. There was only one person really working and 2 other people slacking off and chit chatting as a line of over 20 people stood waiting for our rental cars. Upon finally getting the keys to the rental, it was not serviced, damaged and dirty as if it had just been turned in with crumbs in the interior not vacuumed, bugs cemented to the windshield and interior window grease obstructing the view of the driver. The engine sounded like it was struggling with every step on the gas pedal and would easily shift into L when in Drive. From the service sticker, the car was months past due on service. In trying to report the issue we had to call 4 different numbers to finally get through to an agent who apologized and offered us a credit on the next rental. Nothing would be done about the current full price rental we were in. I would avoid renting from Hertz at all costs. read more

Hertz is one of the easiest vendors when it comes to picking up or dropping off a car, especially if you're a member of their loyalty program. And this location offered easy pick and drop off of the vehicle. However, attention to the condition of the cars is another story. The car I picked up had no fuel. So my first and immediate destination had to be a gas station. Super annoying. What's worse is that trying to reach anyone at this location by phone was impossible for 2 days. When checking out, person scanning my key fob kept it. I was driving on interstate I-94 in rush hr traffic, trying to follow my GPS. This person called my cell # 7 times, interrupting my GPS and making me extremely nervous. This was putting my safety at risk. I was 3/4 of the way to my destination and I finally was able to answer my phone. Person notified me that she kept my key fob and if I stop, my car won't start again. I told her her will figure it out once I get to where I'm going but she was stressing me out. As soon as I was able, I called her back. She blamed me for not answering my phone sooner. I told her distracted driving is illegal. I asked to have the key sent to me. She refused. I asked if I could go to a Hertz 2 miles away and get another car..again refusal. I had to have someone drive me 45 min one way and 45 min back to get the key. No apologies, nothing done to compensate me. Don't rely on Hertz. They will put you at risk, then blame you. read more

Then, upon return of the car with a full tank of gas, we were charged to refuel! When we contested the charge, we were required to show receipts for gas, if you can believe that. My family and I were traveling into Detroit and rented a car. We got into one of the busses to drop us off at the airport and forgot my baby's iPad inside the bus when we got off. In a panic, we returned to the stop and imagined someone had already taken it and it was lost forever. To our surprise, our bus driver, Melvin, had checked the bus before his shift ended and found it. He took it into the office immediately and we were notified. We are so thankful for his honesty and attention. We were able to recover the iPad quickly and make our flight in-time. My recent rental experience met my every expectation, as it has in the past when I've rented out of this location. It was easy to pick up my vehicle and be on my way. Not trying to toot any horns, but I am currently a part of the President's Circle and I was able to pick my vehicle very quickly, a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe. I was out of the rental facility in less than 5 minutes. On this particular trip I did run into a major vehicle issue immediately after pickup (The vehicle shifter would not get out of Park when I went back to pick up my family at arrivals, but i was able to restart it and get it in drive and go back to the rental location). Totally not their fault, it's one of those things. The Hertz staff, Shimika, was very helpful in helping resolve the issue and change our vehicle right away. They had a similar vehicle brought to us ready to go. The only issue was that it had a strange odor...which annoyed my wife and kids, and didn't dissipate until a few days into our rental. We did have to buy a vehicle deodorizer thing, but I really didn't want to have to do another vehicle switch and we needed to get going as we were short on time. Being president's circle, I wish I was able to just pick any other vehicle in the same group, but there was something with the incident policy that did not allow for that, again, not the agents' fault. She was very helpful and really prevented us from being stuck at the rentals for way longer than we wanted to be. If anything again, I just with the policy allowed me to get another vehicle of my choice. Pick up and drop off were very quick and the process was painless. The shuttle was already there when I went to get the rental, and I waited less than 5 min after dropoff. I would definitely rent again from Hertz. read more
