Frozen to marinated meats. Jerky, summer sausage, cheese, spices. All kinds of things alongside the unique frozen meat that you won't find in your everyday grocery run. The butchers are hard at work in the background providing excellent quality cuts to their customers (and no, the store doesn't smell like a butcher shop). We just picked up our third order from Bud's Custom Meats - they prepared our half beef for us. Once again, they've done superb work. They trim quite carefully and follow your directions to a "t". It's always a delight to open one of the packages (we have them wrap in paper as it stacks better in the freezer) -- almost like a gift these pieces of meat are so beautifully cut. We've really enjoyed their service. Of course, you can just pop into their quaint store and buy some cuts, but we purchase half animals (beef or pork) from nearby Stemple Creek Ranch and then have bud do the cuts for us. Tried their Ribs, T bone, and Top Sirloin. The whole gang enjoyed them. Would suggest to friends to try them out.

They are super friendly here and have a great variety of stuff in their store to choose from, but I've primarily used them to process whole pigs for me. They have the best tasting process for smoked meats and those are always a huge hit when I serve them to anyone. My only suggestion is to maybe double check your cut list with them because I've had a few errors from that. My last pig, I asked for them to cut me double boned chops and they don't seem to be familiar with that cut as they left the chine bones on and made them very difficult to eat. This last pig I asked for slab bacon, but they still cut it into slices (and charged me a cutting fee to boot). Otherwise I've had great experiences with them. First, this place is amazing. The staff could not have been more kind and so customer service driven and so great to see in this day and age when customer service seems to have taken a back seat. I ordered a smoked turkey for thanksgiving and they confirmed and called me when it was ready. The one thing everyone should know is the turkey is not cooked. Maybe partial but we still had to cook it for about 3 hours for a 15 pound turkey. The upside to this is that I was able to tell my guest that I cooked the turkey and it was 100% true. Of course I gave Buds the credit when everyone was licking their lips telling me how it was one of the best turkeys they have ever had. It was flavorful. Moist. Juicy. Maybe a little too good. You would think 15 pounds would result in plenty of leftovers but it was like my guest went into scavenger mode and made most of it disappear. Wow!! I live six hours away and am a little relieved it's not closer to my house as I would probably have meat every single night if I had ready access to Bud's. Instead of bringing my spouse a T-shirt from my weekend away, I decided to bring him a steak. Thankfully, he shared it with me. The cowboy cut ribeye steak was $19.99 a pound, which is amazing. Example: The form stated that there were two tenderloins for two hogs. There were ZERO tenderloins in the boxes received. The other cuts of meats were gristly at best. This was not the meat of a well taken care of 4H hog. Bud's Meats swaped our savory 4H pork for their customer counter, skimmed off the top, and gave us the remaining tough, old sow meat from God-knows-where thinking we would not notice. You can ask them to cut it into smaller pieces - They have the typical tri tips, ribeyes, etc. Some of their marinated meats are really good. They have au jus infused cuts as well which are super juicy - My favorite part is that they have game meats too. Duck, quail, pheasant, venison, goat, boar, elk, etc. - They also have organ meats, usually beef heart and liver. To say I was ecstatic when I found Bud's Meat years ago would be an understatement. I told EVERYONE about Bud's. Then we became California refugees and moved to Nevada. 3 places kept us coming back Harmony for Dim Sum, De Angelo for Italian food, and Bud's. We either flew to Petaluma every 3 months or drove. We like to pick our cuts, walk out with a $300-$500 box of provision. We have a freezer box in the plane or car when we go. Two weeks ago we drove... 4 hours... to learn that one bastion holding up California for us turned into a shitshow as well. Freezers, %80 empty. No buffalo bangers. No wild game at all. NOTHING. My wife loaded what looked halfway appealing and we paid the Zombie $90. Zombie you ask? As Bud's was barely alive so was the Girl at the checkout. When I asked what was going on with the lag of meat, we drove for 4 hours, I got an answer you would expect from a corpse. With a dead stare in her eyes "Next time, call". She did not want to be there, she hated her life and dealing with customers. Not a point of salesperson at all. The next day my wife cooked dinner using one of the veal pieces. It had been re-frozen multiple times. It was rotten. It stunk up the house and had the consistency of a body dragged out of the Louisiana marsh. DONE! read more

13 years ago I wrote my original 5 star Yelp about Bud's. And the five star rating still is well deserved. Cooked a big cut pork chop last night. It was one of the best quality and tastiest I've ever eaten. Bud's now sells at the Santa Rosa Farmer's lane Saturday outdoor market. Don't have to drive to the Penngrove butchery, though if you do there will be a vastly larger variety of meats for your choosing. My 13 year old opinion still is valid: Bud's meats are better than Costco, Oliver's and Whole Foods. On par with superlative Sonoma county meats company, with Bud's having significantly lower prices. read more

I have had many Beef, Deer and Pig serviced here, over decades. I just opened a package of 2 Beef T-Bones. 1 is cut at 1 3/4" and is a proper slice across the entire steak. The 2nd T-Bone starts at 1 1/4" at the bone and reduces down to zero at the end of the steak. That's right, paper thin. Carpaccio. Worst end product I have seen in 50 years. How do I prepare this? We all know what it cost (space, time &$) to raise cattle and then have a "Bud's" come out, service and then process the meat. I am beyond upset. Today we did an experiment. 2 similar weight corned beef briskets, one from Buds, one from Raley's. Smoked exactly the same this afternoon, to make delicious pastrami. The Raley's cut shrunk significantly and was paler, less flavorful (see right). The Bud's cut was delicious, on the left. And worth it. Proves my theory that supermarkets commercial meat is jacked up with water. We are paying for water. It's not a good deal. read more

I've been coming to Buds since about 2005 or so. One day I was driving in Penngrove and saw a sign to turn off the beaten path to a place with custom meats. I thought what the heck and went down the dirt road and walked inside and boy am I glad I did. To this day, its still basically a bunch of refrigerators and freezers, but the meat is top notch. I've tried all the varieties of meat, sausage, chicken, hangar steaks etc. What I keep coming back to is the Bloody Mary tri trip. Honestly the Bloody Mary tri tip is the best meat in the world and a hit at every BBQ. Every time I have a BBQ I always have people asking me how I made the tri tip and raving about how delicious it was. I come here all the time to pick up a bunch of them. Cook them on indirect heat for about 15 minutes a side until the internal temp reaches 130 to 135 and let it rest and carry over to 140-145 depending on preference. The people at Buds are always wonderful too. The employees always let my daughter meet the animals on the farm. They have chickens, sheep, goats, and other friendly animals.
