Great place to stay at the rally and the best party anywhere in my opinion. We have been there the last 4 years and have already signed up for the 80th annual in 2020. Love the variety of music and acts and no other campground does it better. There are improvements made to the property every year to make it even better. I like the new asphalt roads that have been added and the new larger racetrack in front of the stage. I camp in the same area every year and its only a 2 minute walk from the main stage and quiet from 1am. on. Restrooms are clean and there is an attendant there for about 8 hours each day and not far from no extra charge nice showers. I am a VIP for Wednesday the night snoop dogg will be there so its the best party anywhere for me. read more

Best bang for the buck ! My wife Sue and I have been loving The Chip since 2010. The owner and the staff make the difference. Doing their best to accommodate thousands of people from every walk of life with one thing in common, love of motorcycle life, is no easy task, but these guys rise above the rest to insure there is something for everybody. From just the shear size, allowing diversity in priority's from front row dead center of the party camping to camping on the outskirts for those that need a little more remoteness for a good nights sleep... the concerts... the entertainment, ( my horse loving wife and I both loved the years the Budweiser Clydesdales camped out with us ) ! ...... the food vendors.... the bike museum..... the stunt shows.... the going above and beyond to honor our veterans.... the close proximity to downtown Sturgis for a night out on the town..... the organized rides..... I'm sure some get excited holding a lighter up in anticipation of the band coming back out for one more tune,,, but for most bikers, the sound of all those bikes firing up and blasting the pipes says let's keep the party going works a whole lot better......life is too short to risk bad vacations,,,, The Chip has always had us leaving with the feeling we Can't wait to come back . read more

First year was in 2013 and have been going ever seance. They do a great job in different verity of music for everyone and it's one hell of a party. They have bus schedules to take you from the chip to down town so that is a plus. Me and my wife will go every year. read more

I have been going to sturgis for 25 years and the chip always has the best bands by far! yes I agree the showers are a little expensive and the bathrooms could be a lot cleaner but overall a great place! I have my own camper and usually camp in the south 40. Its nice to be able to walk home from the concert and not have to ride! Also, just about every campground has its mud problems but it all comes down to are you a good enough biker to handle it? They have a lot of things going on, comedy, free stage, vendors, and don't forget the bikini beach! Skinny dipping at midnight can get wild!! Have fun and ride safe! read more

I spent 2018 Black Hills Rally camping at the Buffalo Chip. It was my first time there, and having driven my motor home from Wisconsin, I was concerned about getting to my site. Needless to say, the staff was well prepared for the crowd, and were very accommodating. I was traveling with another couple. They got us adjoining sights. Everything worked very smoothly. And it only got better from there. We all had a great time and enjoyed all the bands! I am already booked for 2019 and can not wait to return! read more

This will be my third year at the Chip and my second year with my RV in the "Fenske Area". 100% the way to enjoy the week - parking in the Fenske area puts you in the eye of the hurricane - a quiet place to chill directly backstage - last year we could watch the races out of one window and the concerts out of another! Best Seat in the house. Or when you're ready to join in with the main floor festivities, its a 2 minute walk to the VIP area in front of the main stage! The crew that runs the area is top class too - 5 star service if you can imagine that amongst a sea of ten thousand (?) of camping bikers! We have been going to the Sturgis Rally for almost a decade now and this is the first and last time we will stay at the Buffalo Chip. We booked online and received the "Early Special". We booked a golf cart, private spot, and a private port-a-potty for our spot. Between us and the other couple that booked the whole week with us, we spent approximately $2500. When we arrived at the Chip it was so chaotic that nobody told us that our spot was already reserved. We talked to the lady that checked us in, the guy at the gate, and a lady inside the Chip that was supposed to be helping people find their spots, who by the way told that nobody else knew what they were talking about. We received three different answers. We finally found a guy that had camped there before that helped us out after searching for our spot for over an hour. We went to get the keys for the port-a-potty the next morning and they didn't seem to know what were talking about either. Moving on to the showers. I know that they have free showers but you can pay $8.00/day for a shower that is really no better than the Drag Pipe, where we normally stay, and those showers are free. The general consensus that I got from the staff at the Buffalo Chip is everything that they do is for promotion purposes and really don't give a shit about anything other than making money. They have all of these bullshit rules about being quiet at night and speed limits, but somewhere along the way drag racing up and down the main road at 3:00 in the morning must have been missed in the rule book. Everything you do out there costs money from, as I stated 8.00 showers to $.75 ketchup. Really?!?! We had a member of our party that got chosen in the top ten for a bike giveaway on Wednesday night. It started out that the drawing was at 5:00 PM, then it went to 5:30 PM, then 7:00 PM, and finally 9:20 PM. He was told that if he wasn't chosen for a bike that he would receive some great consolation gifts. These consolation gifts turned out to be all of the free shit that vendors were giving away thrown into a Buffalo Chip bag. This place is just controlled chaos on the verge of getting out of control. Everything about this place was unorganized. The staff was rude, with the exception of the lady at the showers and another gentleman that handled the entertainment. These two were extremely friendly and nice to talk to and deal with. I could go on and on. It normally doesn't take much for me to relax and have a good time. Like I said this is the first and last time we will be staying at the Chip. We will go back out to the Drag Pipe and spend our $75.00 for the whole week and have a much more enjoyable experience. read more

So I came here, exhausted. I rode from MPLS to rally area. Took "da bus" to buffalo chip. Arrived at buffalo chip to what looked like would be a nasty storm. Shortly after getting off the bus it started hailing. I asked the front desk if I could charge my phone during the storm and this is the honest answer I received (refer to picture below). It's a pricy shift hole!...literally, they are dumping shit tanks up on the hill and in the water in the Red Barn Campground. We've stayed several years in the past because the bands were awesome, but this will definitely be our last time here! The bands were just ok, there was trash and beer cans everywhere, piles of dirty debris stacked everywhere, the wristbands were too costly for what we got and the hookup sites very costly....all we smelled was shit all week!! Not happy with our experience this year; think there needs to be some crazy huge improvements of a paved venue, staff to clean the venues and grounds several times a day, a dump site far away for all the trash and a healthy safe way to dispose of the raw sewage! read more

Would like to give them 0 stars. Will try to be brief there is just so much to say. From the time I booked (8/4/14) for the 75th and then tried to change my 30amp to a 50amp a month later, rude staff of no help. I booked a long rv spot as our unit is 44' long (50') with 4 sewer dumps - 1 year in advance. You would think this would give them plenty of time to prepare - apparently NOT. When we arrived on 8/1/15 we were sent to a hay pasture about 1/2 a mile from the entrance and told to walk to the booth to obtain our registration information and then we could get in line to go inside and park. While I walked to the registration my husband was lined up with others and then surrounded by other trucks/trailers. I hurried back to get in line and was told by another staff member that we could not get in line, we would have to wait until the field emptied in front of us regardless of whether they had done their paperwork or not. Couple of hours of sitting doing NOTHING and watching others on the opposite side of the grounds keep entering while we sit. Finally someone said no one is in charge just make your way the best you can. So at this point we asked another vehicle in line to let us in line to enter campground which they did. As we get to the gate there are several teenagers directing or Misdirecting traffic - I ask them to make sure they send us to a long spot, we are told no problem they send us down a row of very close parked trailers that is probably only 35' deep - no way our trailer will fit, finally they agree to take us to the "real" long spots - we barely fit (they are not 50' long as promised). Hook up to water and electric, we have no electricity until late that evening due to bad transformer. We get a note on our door the next morning asking us to keep our a/c off when not in trailer and only use 1 when we are in it??? We paid extra for the electricity! Not to mention we paid extra for the sewer dumps - they never happened! Golf carts and atv/utv's took over the campground! They would literally run you off the road on your bike. After the rains they made mush of the roads. Numerous bikes were dropped due to the mud pits! We tried to eat at their steak and lobster place, what a joke! They were out of salad, they had potatoes but nothing to put on them, the steaks were so overcooked they were like leather and to top it off they were out of knives so 6 of us shared 1 plastic knife. Their shots of liquor are only 3/4 ounce not 1 ounce. It took us 2 hours and 45 minutes to get out of the campground and to the highway just to begin our ride. This scenario never changed, this traffic issue is solely on the Chip, other campgrounds did not have this problem. Not sure why every road that would have bypassed Sturgis from the campground had been blocked either- they forced you to have to go to Sturgis. The staff seemed unconcerned about any of these issues and made no effort to improve. These are just some of the issues that we experienced. We left several days early just to get away from the Chip! The dirt/mud roads providing access were horrible and impassible after a rain. Will go back for the Rally again but never to the Chip! read more

I've been coming to this awesome campsite for 3 years now and LOVE it!! I always have a great time and enjoy the concerts, the people and the different venues available! Oh my gosh I can't tell you how awesome this place is for the greatest motorcycle rally on earth! Better be prepped for everything...including some rain ha ha. I have never had a problem with the Buffalo Chip until this year. As a finalist in the Miss Buffalo Chip Poster Model contest I received a full free pass...Awesome! And got to meet some big name people who make the party at the Chip happen. However, the staff this year are HORRID. They profiled me to the max on two different occasions (and days), demanding to see ID. I had never been asked before in the 3 years I'd been coming here. They ID you in order to even get your wristband and it is put on you by the staff. Why should I have to carry around my ID after my identification has already been verified? I offered that they scan my wristband and call their superiors but they said "we can't do that." To make matters worse, Greg (one of heads of security and who I've meet multiple times prior) shooed me off when I asked for him to verify who I was to him staff. Ed's "boys" (part of the enforcement staff), who were part of the harassment and profiling, put their hands on me and all SEVEN (yes you read that right...7) of them felt it necessary to try to intimidate my husband and me. What the f*@&?! I am not only shocked by the methods of their "job" but I can't say that I'm looking forward to coming back. Woody and Carroll have been amazing and their hard work is visible but security took what, I guess, they consider is their "duty" and were appallingly out of line this year! read more

I now want to thank the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, South Dakota for being total ASSHOLES to me. What you see in their ads is complete BULLSHIT! Back in May of 2015 I reserved a ticket to see concerts at the Buffalo Chip for my first ride out to Sturgis to celebrate the 75th year of the rally. The day before I was scheduled to ride out I had a medical check up for some pain I had been having in my left calf. Turns out I had a blood clot in my left leg. I promptly called the Chip while on my way to the E.R. to explain the situation to them and asked for my $360.00 to be refunded due to medical circumstances beyond my control. The gal I spoke with at the Chip promptly informed me they would NOT refund my money. They would be happy to let me use the ticket next year and give it to someone else if I couldn't use it. I was absolutely STUNNED! Really? SO, if you want to get screwed by a business with no sense of morals or ethics hand your hard-earned dollars over to The Buffalo Chip and watch it magically disappear as they hide behind policy instead of doing the right thing. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Chip resold my ticket and double-dipped on it. DISGUSTING, This is how you treat a 61 year old man with a blood clot in his leg? YOU SUCK CHIP!!!! I your attendance and profits continue to decline and you go BANKRUPT! SHAME ON YOU! read more

Stayed here for the 75th anniversary Sturgis bike rally with friends because everyone wanted to be able to say we'd been to the legendary Buffalo Chip. All I can say is I'm glad it's over. Everything I enjoyed about this trip had nothing to do with this horrible place. It's like a refugee camp. Filthy, overcrowded & disgusting are words I would use to describe it. It's all about lining their pockets & cramming as many people in there as possible. One night of rain turned it into a muddy swamp they could have easily remedied with a few truckloads of hay, but no steps were taken in that direction, despite many requests for some sort of solution to the problem. Toilet facilities in dry camping areas were a few wooden structures scattered here & there containing 4 ancient looking (and smelling) outhouses. They were so foul you couldn't stand to be in them for more than two or three seconds without vomiting. Even the portable toilets required long hikes through treacherous ground, poorly cut grass, and more mud than you can imagine to reach, and they were only slightly less disgusting. Showers and flushing toilets were few and inadequate. Water was pretty much always cold, lukewarm when it wasn't freezing, and girls who seemed to work for tips did their best to keep them clean - even though the toilets frequently clogged, and the lines were endless. Concerts were just above average. Mostly bands who have seen better days, with very few exceptions. Food and drink are very overpriced, as is ice and water. Access in and out is severely restricted, and the lines are long. Staff is surly and rude, largely unhelpful and unconcerned. I would suggest Broken Spoke as an alternative, just down the road on the other side of Bear Butte. The ground is more level overall, and the facilities much cleaner and well maintained. It looked like the Hilton sitting next to an outhouse by comparison. Buffalo Chip seems to be riding on an over-hyped and undeserved reputation, and in my opinion, it is done. Called the number i had done reservations through yesterday and realize i had been scammed fake number. And now im out 1400.00. We've been going to Surgis nearly every year four the passed 14 years. We stay at Buffalo Chip every year. It's possible to have a good time and never leave the campground. They always seem to have the best entertainment. We've made some great friends over the years. More fun then should be allowed! read more

I spend five days at Sturgis during bike week and had the misfortune to stay at The Buffalo Chip campground during their 75th anniversary. Not all was bad if you like classic rock music, the concerts are great and there is plenty to do and look at. The problem was with the conditions of the latrines or portable odd houses, all of the mud once it rain and the lack of concern from management to prepare for the amount of people using this place. If you are going to stay at the Chip bring lots of money, or better yet, bring an RV with everything that you may need, also bring a 4x4 vehicle or a dirt bike for those muddy rainy days or you will get stuck on the mud. For me I will never go back to that place, not even with an RV. There are places cheaper and better run to stay, I learn that too late. read more

I can't think of a better place to stay if you really want the Rally feel. It's a place with a variety of things to do day or night! Bike shows, lots of daytime events, concerts, good food, giveaways. I could go on for days! Everyone is complaining about the 75th & how bad it was but news flash it was that way in all of the Black Hills! People everywhere, lots of traffic, lines for bathrooms everywhere you go. It's a small town and no there's not many roads for a whole city of people for only two weeks to ease their traffic troubles. Go ahead & pay hundreds of dollars a night to stay in a hotel but that's not what it's all about now is it! Imagine the 50th or ask around on how it was then; yeah I think it's grown up nicely. It's camping, partying, racing, enjoying the shows day & night & more importantly making new friends, new family & the best memories possible! Yeah there's some bad apples here & there but I say hat's off to Rod & all the hard workers that make this happen! It takes real hard work & dedication for something like this. I made reservation at the EZ Camp for Sturgis at the Chip. Site was very expensive - over 1K for the week and was to include full setup (tent, sleeping pad & bag, lantern, cooler, chairs). Just "show up" and enjoy the "idyllic" setting with nearby showers and bathrooms. BS! We got there and while people were nice enough, the tent had a pool of water in it (guy before us left flap open) and was muddy inside. This idyllic setting was surrounded by a stream yes, but overgrown and full of trash. The girl told us they had changed the locations of the bathrooms (now a 10+ minute walk for the nasty ones, 15-20 for the better ones) and the showers were even further away. The young lady showing us to our site advised us if we needed to go to the restroom, to just squat behind the tent. This "idyllic" site was located under a floodlight (yes, you could read a book at 1 in the morning) and just happened to be right behind the amphitheater. Nothing like five finger death punch after a 14 hour bike ride and wanting to crash. You can't bring booze into the site, so be prepared to pay a premium for anything thing you need to acquire on site - booze, ice, food, water - all have big markups. Bottom line - pay for the concert you might want to go see and stay at one of the other campgrounds (there are several) or in a hotel (like we did after night one) in one of the nearby towns (we chose Deadwood). Do not camp here and certainly do not pay for EZ CAMP - total rip off. They should be ashamed of the gross misrepresentation on their website. read more
