I was excited to visit the oldest or one of the oldest bars in SD. The immediate vibe from the servers was a downer. For the lunch hour crowd it wasn't busy at all. Our female server was annoyed we had not decided on a meal and left before we could get a word in. She wasn't friendly at all. The menu was average. We had the Buffalo burger and a blt which was. "Ok" so disappointed. We were hoping some questions about the history of the restaurant would be answered but let's not not bother the waitress or the bartender. I'd send you somewhere else. Service was slow and not really polite. Prices are not bad for the area and it's got a neat history and decoration but the food is average at best. I had the hot smothered beef with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. Not much flavor and could only eat maybe half the heat, seemed like all the scraps off their good cuts of meat-lots of fat, sinew, gristle. Lady had the steak tips which were good flavor but over cooked. Salad was VERY plain and dry. Ice water was the best part of the meal but even it ran out with no refill. It was difficult to give them even one star. The shrimp was greasy and the chicken strips were over cooked. The corn was unseasoned (some salt and/or pepper could have been added). How's the food, you ask? We don't know. We didn't make it that far. Their patio had 6 open tables: 4 six tops and 2 four tops. The "inside" (which is open air) was empty. The 2 four tops were right in the sun, so my husband, our dog ( we checked, the hostess said it was fine to bring him to the patio), and I sat at one of the 6 tops. The wait staff was friendly and courteous. The food was bland and had no seasoning at all. The rolls were cold like they had just pulled them out of a bag. They hit us with 18% gratuity for 6 people when one was 9. If the food would have been good that might not have bothered me so bad but to pay over $140 for 2 adults, 3 teenagers and a child and have bad food is a little much. Big Al's seems happy to encourage a reputation as Wall Drug's little brother. It has 5-cent coffee (but free refills!) and standard roadside diner fare. My companion and I each had buffalo burgers, which essentially tasted like your average hamburger. Our waitress was incredibly nice and attentive, and our food came quickly. The restaurant is clean and very spacious, with a taxidermy-heavy decorating scheme that educated this traveler about the various native species in the area. The restaurant is attached to a number of stores, most of which offered unremarkable mass-produced "souvenirs" - don't let your kids wander through the stores unless you are prepared to buy them some junk or deal with whining. read more

If you want to just hang and have a beer - 5 stars for that. I had the beef tips and a Bloody Mary. The beef tips were flavorless and the breading was soggy (I don't normally like breaded beef tips but hey, gambling remember). The loaded baked potato was alright, the corn....well it looked like corn and tasted like nothing, and I'm pretty sure the roll was from a bag from the grocery store that was ran over in the parking lot and left for days. The Bloody Mary was ok. I mean ok. We spent 50 bucks (without tip, which we tipped well because the service was great), on a meal that Wal-Mart could have made better and cheaper. Stopped for lunch on a super hot day. They had a sign out front that said there might be a long wait for food because of short staffing. That was not the case at all. Upon arriving we sat at the bar because of a wait. Ordered drinks maragrita and long island....I dont believe they even had alcohol in them. Had to order a shot of tequila to counter the amount of sour mix in the margarita. The long island was missing alcohol as well. Once we got buzzed for our table, Got seated by the kitchen door. Very noisy and lots of traffic. Wanted to order prime rib but could only cook it medium, and my spouse wanted it more rare. . And they were out of baked potatoes. I had the whiskey steak. I ordered it medium, and it came out oozing blood. His steak was suppose to be rare but was medium. They recooked it. His was rare and mine was still oozing blood and chewy. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant...and needed seasoning. We had to move to a different table because water from the ceiling kept dripping onto our table, and no matter where we scooted the table it was too close to our food! Yuck! After sending the food back abd receiving it for the second time, the waitress was done asking us if everything was ok. I didnt expect alot from Deadwood especially during Sturgis week but geez...I left hungry and paid full price! We are definitely foodies and had our expectations low, but this was unacceptable. These cats know how to cook. We had several different items from the menu..all tasty. There was live music, a pretty eclectic crowd (rally time) which was fun and entertaining.
