This was one of our favorite places to stop at when in deadwood. This particular time we went with 6 of us for lunch. Unfortunately the service was lacking. They must have been very short handed. Several tables walked out while waiting to Be greeted. We stayed and waited. The food was ok. The problem was the hostess who was annoyed she had to help with her phone sticking out of her pocket and the server who did not check on us or just come over to apologize for the long wait. Tough to find the restaurant we had to go through the casino & up the elevator. I enjoyed looking at the photos of Gems from 100 years ago. It appears that the Gem Theater is from 1876 and the TV series Deadwood was filmed here. This is Deadwood's longest continuously operated entertainment venue. Gabbie was our waitress, she was on point. Unfortunately, prime rib is only Friday,s & Saturday's. Wild Bill's Walleye with a loaded potato, vegetables, garlic bread, and soup was good. This was a last minute game time decision for food. Our waitress was awesome. The food? Not so much. It's your average run of the mill stuff. Nothing special. Had the French dip. Meat was dry and no au jus was going to save it. The history of the place was super cool. Then again, you're in Deadwood. There's something around every corner. We were super excited to visit Deadwood after watching the HBO series. I had zero expectation about actually having a good meal in this town after reading all the reviews but we were highly impressed with our meal at Gem Steakhouse. The restaurant was on the 2nd floor, extremely clean and our server was great. Be sure and walk down the hallway before or after you eat to see all the pictures of the town and people. Lots of history at the Gem. It was a great stop for some photos & reading about the towns colorful past. The restaurant is upstairs from the casino so if you don't mind walking through a smoke den to the elevator it's worth it. The food was decent for the price, less than $85 for 6 people. Kids had the buffalo burgers with fries, I had the Outlaw Beef & my husband had the Buffalo Bill. No one had anything negative to say about the food & it was all cooked just fine. The ambiance is weird - they had us wait in a closed seating section for a table, there's no music so it was eerily silent aside from the sounds of silverware clinking. We finished our salads before they brought our drinks from the bar. We had to ask the host to find our server. Upon walking in, it kind-of gives like, retirement home vibes, but it's definitely worth the visit! Best chicken fried steak I've ever had. It was thinner than most chicken fried steaks, which gave it the perfect amount of crispiness. Simple and classic, but definitively delicious. My partner had the mother lode quesadillas as a meal and finished the plate. Most of all, the service was excellent. JJ was the best server ever! The place would probably crumble without him. First day I came here was told that the restaurant was open for breakfast. I arrived at 10:40am and was informed that the restaurant is closed from 10:30-11. However, the employees didn't tell me this. The second time I went - the host stayed a 20 minute wait. So I went downstairs. Came back up 20 minutes later and waited while they cleaned off a table. Was seated and given water and a menu. Waited 10 minutes for a waitress - and finally went to the front counter and ordered. The waitress passed my table 3 times and never stopped. The front counter lady said they only have one waitress. But they have 2 girls pouring water and coffee. But then I would see the waitress do that? Better organization would help this place run smoother. The food arrive 17 minutes later. Nothing to brag about. I know the hash browns are packaged as I rode the elevator up with the guy delivering cases of frozen hash browns. The gravy was probably canned. Not good. Cheese wasn't melted in the omelette. The waitress FINALLY came to my table and stated that she wouldn't charge me for the Bloody Mary? Huh? I purchased it downstairs.... And she would have had to deliver it if she had ever come to take my order. She never apologized for the wait. All I got were excuses. The lady from the front counter came over and asked me how was everything. I just replied "fine". For such a beautiful history's building this is a very sad state of affairs. I didn't (couldn't) finish my breakfast. Floors were sticky. Never got a bill so here I am waiting at the front counter again..... Waited another 10 minutes at the front counter to pay.... It's not even worth it to actually go into the details but just keep in mind that if you want to enjoy your meal....this isn't the establishment you're looking for. Do you want to gamble at the casino? Go for it! The kitchen staff should be replaced or at least retrained. We both ordered the ribeye sandwiches along with the pulled chicken appetizer. The pulled chicken was over cooked poorly executed buffalo chicken wings which took an ungodly amount of time to be prepared. The sandwich was well done as opposed to rare and was topped with raw mushrooms and onions. I asked the mortified waitress for properly sauteed mushrooms and the kitchen staff slightly microwaved a few more which certainly wasn't consumed. A couple of things to know about Deadwood - the food is all upstairs above the casinos. After we figured out where to look, we had to decide which establishment to patronize. The Gem Steakhouse looked good, so up we went. We are "pre-season" so the place was mostly empty at 12:30. We were seated promptly and the specials were explained along with information on a local specialty -Chislic. We didn't have this so I can't speak to the food, but it sounded interesting. We decided to split a Buffalo Burger and fries. It was just enough food. I saw a salad go to another table and it was huge. The server was pleasant and attentive. Three in our party ordered steak and 2 were rancid and the 3rd tasted "off". all three meals wasted, not able to eat them. the waitress agreed the meat smelled bad and took it back to the kitchen. She offered to have it remade but we were afraid it was a meat quality issue and not a preparation issue. She never returned to the table after we sent the meat back, and we were charged full price for all meals. No offer to comp or discount even though she agreed the meat was rancid smelling. Unfortunately the salad under one steak was also ruined by the meat juice, and it was clear the meat hadn't rested due to all the blood on the plate. Two hours later, I was talking to another business owner a few doors down and he admitted he never recommends Gem and often sees the employees out back of the restaurant smoking weed. So all in all we left hungry, worried about food illness, and pretty sad overall. Waitstaff were nice- but the ambiance and food are a zero star rating. Don't recommend for any reason. It was a long drive to Deadwood and we were both starving. I looked up reviews and menus and Gem was nearby our hotel. We were there end of Oct and the town was pretty dead tourist wise. We walked over for an early dinner. I wish we had left. None of the staff wore masks. I guess I was in shock and we were tried after traveling all day. We were the only people dining till we were almost done with our food. I was excited about the Walleye, but it was a little fishy. It was a very large portion. I had read the baked potato wasn't great and that was accurate. It tasted old and boiled. And the veggies were tasteless and just soft. It was weird. I didn't see great reviews at any of the places and this seemed the best. I went because they were cheaper on my Walleye, but the menu online had the wrong price. Maybe because it's a tourist trap town. But I excepted better food. We chose to not eat in town after the first meal even though we stayed here a week. read more

When we saw the menu for Gem Steakhouse & Saloon, one of my friends and I pretty much decided that steaks were on the menu for lunch! So, when we went back after our tour of the town, we made a beeline for the 2nd-floor restaurant. It isn't much, compared to the glitz of the casino downstairs; but, it's a comfortable setting nonetheless. We ordered two Delmonico steaks with Blue Cheese toppings, Baked Potatoes all-the-way; and, salads. Our third dining companion went for the buffalo burger, with a side of chili. The food was good; but, the potatoes weren't cooked completely through; there wasn't enough butter to make them moist; and, paying extra for bacon bits seems to have gone out of fashion everywhere but here. The steaks were cooked perfectly; and, were very tasty. However, they were topped with way too much cheese; and, were tough to chew. Service was alright; but, not overly friendly or helpful. A true gem in Deadwood! A visit to The Gem is a given for anyone who loves Deadwood the town and/or the show. I expected a tourist trap but it was more an old school steakhouse. The staff was fantastic and friendly even in the midst of limited staffing and overbearing crowds. The food came hot and cooked excellently. The Buffalo chili and. His mix is a must try. For those who don't know Chislic is the official food of SD so if you aren't from here you have to try it somewhere so why not The Gem. Chislic is simply marinated steak tips that are deep fried. What I appreciate at The Gem is they give you the option of breaded or not breaded. Not all places give you that option. Staffing in general in this area as a whole is limited so no matter where you go be patient and kind to those who are working BUT if there is a wait at The Gem it's worth the wait and your patience for a true old school steakhouse experience in the heart of history! read more
