We go here fairly often---about once every two weeks. I really enjoy their Japanese mackerel and usually get the shrimp curry. :) Their ramen is pretty eh so I do not recommend it---but the service is always quick and friendly. I don't know where the bad review people ate, but we weren't at the same sushi joint. Although, I suspect that these people prefer flashy, hipster sushi which this is not. Buko is hands down one of the top three sushi joints in LA, probably one of the top five in the US and ranks up with best in Vancouver and San Francisco. Highly highly highly recommend. Buko is a small, family owned Japanese restaurant in a corner mall at Verdugo and Chevy Chase in Glendale. It reminds me of so many of the little restaurants I enjoyed in Japan. The people are friendly, the food is delicious. I've eaten here at least 50 times, and I've never had a bad meal. It's always good. They have terrific lunch specials for around $10. You can choose from a list of items and it comes with soup, salad, rice and a scoop of potato salad. The sushi is made to order, fresh and yummy. Their tempura is great, salmon teriyaki is perfect, and you've got to try the popcorn lobster roll. Oh, man. That is so good. Chunks of tempura fried lobster over a California roll. Mmmm. All their food is tasty and fresh. I have taken so many friends to Buko, and they always want to return. It's such a friendly, cozy place. Dinner is a little more expensive than lunch, but you get larger portions and dessert. Plenty of free parking in the lot and on the street. I consider Buko one of the perks of living in Glendale. read more

Okay so the sign outside of the restaurant says Sushi Tempura not Buko and they have weird hours (i think it's 12-130 lunch, 5-830 dinner) so I have no idea how they remain in business but other than those anomalies this place is pretty darn phenomenal. A coworker and I decided on Japanese after work and he suggested this place near my house. We got there around 445 and had to wait 15 min for them to open so in the mean time i bought some snacks at a Persian supermarket just right next door haha. Once we got in we both ordered the teriyaki sashimi combo plate that was roughly around $12. They start you off with Miso soup and some pickled cabbage looking things that were both on point. The teriyaki meat was delicious, the sashimi tasted fresh and their salad and potato salad was good. They also give you the option of white or brown rice. In addition, the rice is UNLIMITED. daaaaaaaaaaaaamn Gina! I fell in love right then and there. After your meal they give you a scoop of the most delicious green tea ice cream i have ever tasted. First visit, got take-out. Note they don't do sushi take out except for California Rolls. So I got tempura, noodles, California Roll. The tempura was pretty bland, and the noodles came in broth only, no veggies, mushrooms, eggs, anything. But the broth was tasty and the udon big and thick and chewy. The roll was really tasty - I don't know how they got that much flavor into a california roll! From the looks of the takeout menu, more variation in lunchtime dishes. I lived in Japan for one year and this place is one of the few Japanese restaurants around here that really gives me an authentic experience, as if I'm back in my little town of Kumenan. The people here are so friendly and polite; the customer service is topnotch, very typically Japanese! We had dinner sets and they were both very good--I tried the tempura, sashimi, mackerel, and our meals came with hot tea and a satisfying dessert of cold green tea ice cream. The place is clean, pleasant, and my only complaint is the early closing time--8:30pm on the night I went! I'll be back here again and again, I'm sure of it. read more

I didn't know this place existed! Glad the boyfriend and I discovered this little gem of a sushi spot around Eagle Rock. The service is amazing-- attentive and nice people! This is my favorite neighborhood Japanese restaurant. The atmosphere is low key, intimate, and very casual. The waitresses and waiters are excellent and very attentive. Every item I've tried here is excellent! The teriyaki plates are pretty close to perfect. The chicken and beef are tender and succulent. The salmon teriyaki is to die for. The portions are large too. The plates come with rice, salad, scoop of potato salad, miso soup, delicious oranges, and green tea ice cream. My wife has ordered the tempura plate and it's amazing as well. There prices are affordable, there guest service is respectful and timely, and the ambiance is casual and inviting. I love ordering the Japanese burrito although one alone is not filling. The Japanese burrito is basically a sushi roll with rice paper, shrimp tempura, imitation crab, spicy tuna, and avocado. It does not contain rice or seaweed. The sashimi is affordable and delicious. I personally love yellowtail and it's $12.50 here. Unlike kabuki or Katsuya, you won't break your wallet here. It's in a "secret" location on an unassuming plaza surrounded by middle-eastern establishments but don't let this small spot fool you into thinking they're just your typical Japanese Sushi spot - no, this is one secret spot I'd like to keep secret yet share with my friends and family because they serve some of the freshest sushi in town. My measure of a Japanese restaurant is ordering an 'off menu' item that I acquired a taste for after a few years living in Japan: a shiso leaf and umeboshi hand roll. If they can do it - particularly without having to check w the kitchen first - then I know it's an authentic, traditional spot. This is such a place. It has the standard menu that you'd expect from an izakaya (gastropub) - but the quality makes up for originality. Everything is fresh and has distinct, subtle flavours. The sushi specials menu varies often, and they accommodate amends readily. I keep one star back just because the place could do with a little update. It's perfectly comfortable but I don't find it cozy or inviting. Love that this place is our neighbourhood spot. read more
