Very awesome cafe- reminds of DC Ethiopian cafes. We only had coffee and an appetizer but look forward to coming back for more lunch options in the future. The menu is short but vegetarian friendly. Seems very fresh and has a home made taste. The service is slow but that ok. It's really friendly and I enjoyed speaking with the barista.

Ethiopian is more of a DC thing, but I was happy to find this cafe open in Richmond. They did not have any pastries, perhaps because it was a holiday. However, I came for foul, and received a robust fava bean breakfast. Ordering a tea got me a cinnamon spiced base with a Lipton tea bag. The space was quite open and had some art going on, particularly towards the back. The crowd was a minus on a lot of levels, but it's not the restaurant's fault and these things vary. The opportunity to get a high protein vegetarian breakfast which is also tasty was worthwhile nonetheless.

Great ambience, small space with a sweet, Auntie's house kind of vibe. I love that RVA has another Ethiopian spot finally and the fact that they serve breakfast all day is a WIN! The sambusas and the egg combos are really good. I'm a BIG fan of the chai and homemade drinks - she literally blends the honey and chai spices right there on site as she preps your drink. Service is great and staff is always kind and ready to answer any questions or make recommendations. Everything is served fresh, prepped well, and gives the depth and flavor you need to experience what Ethiopian cuisine is all about!

BEST SERVICE. Delicious food. Kindest staff. A gem in Richmond. The coffee is so lovely. An idea brunch place. My issue is just the lack of seating, which is so not enough to keep me away.

Buna Kurs is an Ethiopian café located in the Jackson Ward area in Richmond. After reading reviews and seeing them on social media, I was very excited to check them out. I'm not sure exactly when they opened, but it's my understanding that this business is fairly new. I visited on a Sunday in February (President's Day weekend) around noon. The place was packed! I ended up ordering the lime thyme limeade and the awaze tibs. The staff were very nice. However, the wait for my food was ridiculously long. I waited over an hour to receive my food. I was not the only one who had to wait a while to receive food. The food was delicious. I could've done without the limeade. I think it would've been better if fresh lime juice was used. Also, the drink was not shaken or stirred, so I didn't taste the flavor of the thyme syrup until I got to the end of the drink. I have mixed feelings about Buna Kurs. I loved the decor and the food. However, I am hoping that improvements have been made in order to be a little more efficient with getting food to patrons, especially during busy times.

Beautiful establishment, amazing service, food was incredible! Suggested from a friend that owns the Nile (another amazing Ethiopian spot), and I was nothing less than blown away. Also met the owner, who was sweet as she could be. Currently, Her father has a few paintings in the gallery located in the rear of the restaurant, that are beautifully done. I forget the name of the drink, it's a tea, with orange juice, ginger, and honey, make sure you try that, so good. Will be back, definitely!

This review is being written inside Buna Kurs right now. I love it here! I'm so grateful my friend and I started our morning here. My first note is that Lily Fasil is incredible. She's created a beautiful shop with delicious food and drinks. As you can read in interviews, she supports local creatives and wants to have a rental space in Buna Kurs for them to make things like podcasts or have photoshoots. We came in at 10am on a Wednesday. It was a little busy, but the line went quick and the stuff we ordered came out quick. My friend ordered the cappucino and the breakfast combo. When I asked Lily for recs she told me the breakfast combo was good for two, but if I wanted to add anything, to try to fu'ul. I ordered that and the chai. Here were our thoughts: Breakfast Combo: You get so much food for just $9.50! It's such a great value! So grateful Lily mentioned it'd be a good idea to share this. Not only did we get to try more food, but we enjoyed it so much. We ran out of injera pretty quickly, but Lily kindly gave us more. Our favorite in the combo was the egg silsi. The eggs were simple, light, and had a great flavor. We enjoyed the kinche and firfir too. The kinche mixed really well with the eggs. The firfir had a nice kick. Fu'ul: I'm used to the Egyptian style fu'ul. When I tried the Ethiopian style, I was in love. The spices in this dish make for a beautiful explosion of flavor in your mouth. So glad Lily recommended this one! Chai: So happy I tried this famous chai! I adored the flavor. I believe they use chai concentrate here so the flavors are a lot more compact and stronger. It had a lovely lingering flavor after each sip. Cappuccino: My friend ordered this and enjoyed it. I assume they use Ethiopian beans? Our overall experience was great here. We loved sharing our food. The atmosphere was fantastic too. I loved all the natural lighting and wicker touches. This is an amazing spot to have a meeting, meet a friend, go on a date, or start your morning. If you're looking for a bang for your buck, come here. Loving this new spot in Jackson Ward!!

This Ethiopian cafe is definitely a hidden gem in Richmond. The staff were so friendly. I tried the sambusa which was filled with lentils and had great combination of spices. I really enjoyed the breakfast combo, and I could try a bunch of different Ethiopian dishes with injera (Ethiopian bread). The flavors are amazing!! I hope to come back and try their specialty lattes and more from their food menu!

Breakfast combo and mango smoothie

First time having Ethiopian food and could not recommend enough! I ordered the breakfast platter and a mango smoothie. All three items were delicious as was the smoothie. Kind and quick.

The ambiance was clean and orderly. Upon entering, you grab a serving tray lined with parchment and some tongs. The items are in a glass enclosed display that you have to open and place your selections on your tray for purchase. I settled on the pistachio cream filled pecan pastry, the almond twist, and strawberry shortcake. The beverage menu was extensive: matcha, flavored teas, cocoa, espresso/coffee, and more. We were greeted by pleasant staff at checkout and our orders placed in a parchment type bag for take out. They also have seating inside. The pastries were just sweet enough without being overly sweet, which I like. The pistachio cream was a perfect compliment to the pecan encrusted pastry. The almond twist was both flaky and crunchy with the sliced almonds on top, and the strawberry shortcake had layers of real strawberries, whipped topping and yellow cake that was moist. All were fresh. All in all, a great place to stop by for a morning pastry treat and tea/coffee while in the area,

I loved the textures and layers of flavors. The drink was filling and lasted me a while, not watery but refreshing. The mango tasted fresh and avocado creamy. I haven't tried the pastries at this location, but have at their other Richmond cafe. Great cakes and buns made fresh in-house. Easy to find parking at the lot outside. Service is pretty quick.

It is fast casual - you order at the kiosk and grab a place to eat, listening for your number and/or text to alert you the food is ready. We arrived about 6pm on a Saturday night. It was busy and I grabbed one of the last two tables. It got very busy shortly after we placed our orders. The dining area is pretty big with plenty of bar seating around the windows. While we all ordered one after the other, our food didn't come out that way. Most of the food came out in about 25-30 minutes. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Juicy! Two people got tenders and three of us got sandwiches. The OG sandwich was very good, just messy! I ended up using a fork and knife bc it got too messy. The Mac and cheese was made with pimento cheese and was very good. My friend who got the fried green tomatoes said they were delicious and filling. Lots of goodies on top. Two friends enjoyed the collards. The only person who was underwhelmed was the person who got the Asian sandwich. Overall, if I wanted a good chicken sandwich and a Buttermilk and Honey was nearby, I'd place an order.

We walked in to find the staff bustling, cooking, and prepping orders, and the smell of some delicious fried chicken in the air. I saw the kiosks and was not too thrilled with the Wawa experience, but we gave it a shot anyway, since fried chicken is one of our favorites. The process was simple and allowed us to add or remove anything we could want, so that was nice. While walking to find a seat, we saw a person panhandling in the dining area, but the staff promptly removed him from the premises. I ordered us the Pimento Cheese Balls for an appetizer, and I chose the Fried Chicken and French Toast as my entree because I always try the "chicken and waffles" at every establishment that offers it. My partner ordered the OG Chicken Sandwich without tomato, and it came with crinkle-cut fries. It was about $40. The chef proclaimed our order was ready in quick succession, maybe three orders behind the guests before us. We waited about ten minutes, maybe fifteen at most. We picked up the orders from the counter, and there was a mix-up on the syrup, but the chef promptly rectified the situation. He was a no-nonsense kind of guy; straight to the point. He seemed firm, yet kind. It was clear the day had been a busy one; he even told us as much, which was great to hear (busy = fantastic food). The French toast squares looked like rye or pumpernickel, and they emitted a sweet aroma, a delightful hit of cinnamon and brown sugar. I drizzled the caramel syrup on my chicken and toast, sliced a piece, and paired a bite of chicken with the toast. I closed my eyes to savor the flavors: the toast was crunchy and almost gooey (yet, not overly so), the chicken was crunchy, the sweet cinnamon-y flavors from the toast, the caramel from the syrup, and the tender, moist chicken were a match made in culinary art. I cannot sufficiently describe the French toast in a way that would do it justice; it was crunchy and semi-gooey, and all scrumptious. I can only say it was the single best French toast that I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Next, I tried the fried pimento cheese balls. Oh my. If you like mozzarella sticks, try these. I adored them: elevated fried cheese, for real. My partner enjoyed her sandwich as well; she ate everything except some of her fries. I saved half of my chicken and toast for today because I am like a treasure golem when it comes to delicious leftovers. I am going to air-fry the chicken and skillet-heat the toast back to its original goodness. I told the cooks that that was the best French toast that I have ever had, and I mean it. Do yourself a favor and try it if you're into French toast. This one is the GOAT. Side note: I spoke with the head chef outside, and he is from another branch (possibly Henrico?) to whip this location back into shape. Two words: "Nailed it."

Instead, I was stopped and loudly reprimanded by a large, intimidating male employee in front of a line full of customers because I had apparently "used the wrong door" and "skipped the line." When I explained that I needed to use the restroom before ordering, I was told I should have used the other entrance -- despite the fact that the door I was directed toward had a clearly posted sign saying "Please Use Other Door." The entire interaction was humiliating and completely unnecessary. No customer, especially a mother carrying a baby, should be publicly shamed over something so minor and confusing. To make matters worse, the bathroom itself was filthy. Even if I had attempted to change my daughter on the floor due to the lack of a changing station, it would have felt unsanitary and unsafe. Businesses love to say they support women and families, but too often mothers are treated like an inconvenience the moment they actually need basic accommodation and decency.

The barista recommended that I try the oat milk and said if I didn't like the drink, they would make me something else. I asked for light oak milk and hoped for the best.
